Matthew Alan Livelsberger was a 37-year-old active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces master sergeant from Colorado Springs who was on approved leave when he drove a rented Tesla Cybertruck to the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on January 1, 2025. The truck exploded in the hotel’s porte cochère seconds after he arrived. Investigators said Livelsberger died from an intraoral, self-inflicted gunshot wound immediately before the explosion.

The public evidence supports a planned, apparently lone-actor attack shaped by personal distress, combat-related trauma, political and military grievances, and a desire to create a highly visible spectacle. It does not establish one definitive motive, a connection to international terrorism, or a final public federal determination that the incident legally constituted domestic terrorism.

Content note: This article discusses suicide and mass violence.

What happened at the Las Vegas hotel?

Livelsberger rented a Tesla Cybertruck through the peer-to-peer platform Turo. The later LVMPD account says the reservation was initially scheduled to begin on December 30, but he obtained the truck on December 28. Investigators traced at least portions of his journey from Colorado toward Las Vegas using license-plate readers, cell records, financial records, surveillance footage, Tesla charging-station video, and digital evidence.

On the morning of January 1, he drove into the porte cochère—the covered entrance and valet area—of the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas at 2000 Fashion Show Drive. The explosion occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m. Pacific time, within seconds of his arrival. The hotel was evacuated, but the building sustained little apparent structural damage.

Investigators concluded that the Cybertruck itself was not the source of the blast. The vehicle was carrying fireworks, fuel canisters, firearms, ammunition, and other materials. The 78-page LVMPD after-action report describes the event as a premeditated attack involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. It does not attribute the explosion to a battery failure, charging problem, or other Cybertruck malfunction.

Seven bystanders were initially reported injured, with the injuries described as minor. The later after-action report, however, referred to six other people being injured. That discrepancy remains in the public record and should not be silently treated as settled. Livelsberger was the only person who died.

Did Matthew Livelsberger die in the explosion?

Not according to the official account. Investigators and the coroner said he shot himself inside the Cybertruck immediately before the explosion. The coroner listed an intraoral gunshot wound as the cause of death. Saying that he was simply “killed by the blast” is therefore inaccurate shorthand.

How was he identified?

The body was badly damaged by the fire and explosion, creating early uncertainty about the driver’s identity. Investigators nevertheless recovered several independent identification clues, including:

  • A military identification card
  • A driver’s license and passport
  • Credit cards and other personal documents
  • Firearms and purchases linked to Livelsberger
  • Vehicle, rental, travel, and digital records
  • Tattoos that could be compared with photographs taken before his death
  • Coroner and forensic examination

The later police report says investigators used a full-spectrum Crime-lite camera to visualize tattoo patterns beneath severely damaged skin. It also says a military ID and driver’s license belonging to Livelsberger were found in the Cybertruck. The formal identification by the Clark County coroner followed on January 2.

In other words, the identification did not depend on one document or an unverified social-media profile. It came from the convergence of physical evidence, forensic work, financial and travel records, and the vehicle investigation.

What was Livelsberger’s Army background?

Livelsberger was a Green Beret, meaning he served in the U.S. Army’s Special Forces—not merely in a broadly defined elite military unit. He was associated with the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), a formation based at Fort Carson. The Army’s official Fort Carson description of the 10th Special Forces Group identifies it as a Special Forces organization responsible for complex missions and crisis response.

Public accounts describe nearly two decades of Army service. According to ABC News’ account, which cited an Army spokesperson, his service included periods of active duty, National Guard duty, Army Reserve service, and a later return to active duty in a Special Operations role. He worked in communications, intelligence, and operations-related positions, and had been stationed at Fort Carson and in Germany.

He was on approved leave from an overseas assignment when he died. That distinction matters because some early coverage called him a veteran. “Veteran” can be used broadly to describe someone with combat service, but Livelsberger was reportedly still serving on active duty at the time of the Las Vegas incident.

He was also highly decorated. Army-attributed reporting described him as having received five Bronze Stars, including one with a valor device, as well as a Combat Infantryman Badge and an Army Commendation Medal with a valor device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do reports give different deployment counts?

Public accounts do not describe his overseas record identically. An FBI official later referred to five combat tours. The Associated Press reported two deployments to Afghanistan along with assignments in Ukraine, Tajikistan, Georgia, and Congo. ABC News, citing an Army spokesperson, reported three Afghanistan deployments.

Those figures may reflect different definitions of deployments, combat tours, assignments, or service records. The safest conclusion is that Livelsberger served for nearly two decades and had multiple overseas and combat deployments, including Afghanistan and several other countries. A single unqualified number would overstate what the public record consistently establishes.

What did investigators say about his motive?

There is no single publicly established explanation for why Livelsberger carried out the attack. The evidence points to several overlapping factors, but it does not show that one diagnosis, one relationship problem, or one political grievance alone caused it.

Political and military grievances

Two letters recovered from a phone in the Cybertruck and later released by LVMPD expressed anger about federal and military leadership, political corruption, inequality, homelessness, diversity, equity and inclusion policies, the war in Ukraine and other conflicts, and what Livelsberger viewed as weak national leadership.

One of the documents framed the act as a kind of public “wake-up” message rather than a terrorist attack. The writings reportedly expressed support for Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. That is important context: the choice of a Trump-associated hotel and a Tesla vehicle created an obvious political symbolism, but the released writings did not portray Trump or Musk as enemies. The location alone does not establish whom Livelsberger intended to target or what he wanted the symbolism to mean.

LVMPD released images of the two letters, including the document titled “Time to Wake Up” and a second letter. The department’s broader January 3 release described them as part of the ongoing investigation.

Reported combat trauma and mental-health struggles

People who knew Livelsberger and officials familiar with the investigation described symptoms associated with PTSD, depression treatment or mental-health assistance, headaches, exhaustion, sleep problems, and possible traumatic brain injury. Reporting also described recurring memories of violence in Afghanistan and guilt connected to the deaths of fellow soldiers and people he had killed during combat.

The Associated Press reported on evidence from a former girlfriend and text messages describing those struggles. ABC News also reported on what it characterized as a broader mental-health crisis. These accounts support describing a serious personal crisis; they do not prove that PTSD caused the attack, and they should not be generalized to veterans or Special Forces soldiers. Most people with PTSD are not violent, and the available evidence here describes one individual’s complicated circumstances rather than a universal pattern.

Personal and family crisis

Investigators interviewed Livelsberger’s wife and reported marital strain, an alleged affair, and his departure from the couple’s Colorado Springs home around Christmas. According to the LVMPD after-action report’s account of that interview, he told his wife he was renting a vehicle for a trip related to drone parts, then cut off access to shared accounts and communication channels.

Those details help establish the surrounding personal crisis, but they should not be presented as a complete or independently proven motive. The public record also includes military guilt, political anger, mental-health concerns, and a desire to create a spectacle.

What were the letters, manifesto, and email?

These documents are often blurred together in online summaries, but they were not all the same thing.

The two released letters

LVMPD released photographs of two letters found on a phone in the Cybertruck. They contained political, cultural, social, military, and personal grievances, including the “wake-up” framing and a rejection of the terrorist label. They are publicly available in image form through the department’s releases, but they should not be treated as a complete manifesto.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The separate manifesto

On January 7, 2025, LVMPD said investigators had found a possible manifesto in addition to the two released letters and an email sent to a podcast host. The later after-action report says a manifesto was recovered from Livelsberger’s phone, that the Department of Defense declared it classified on January 9, and that the investigation was then turned over to the federal government.

The alleged six-page manifesto has not been publicly released in full. That means online claims about its contents—including claims involving classified programs, war crimes, drones, or intelligence agencies—should not be repeated as established fact unless they have been authenticated by authorities or supported by reliable evidence.

The email to a podcast host

LVMPD also referred to an email Livelsberger sent to a podcast host. Because controversial claims attributed to that email have circulated widely, the responsible distinction is between what law enforcement publicly authenticated or described and what has merely appeared in online discussion. The public record does not provide a complete, verified basis for treating every claim associated with the email as factual.

Did ChatGPT help plan the attack?

Police said Livelsberger used generative artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT, while researching aspects of explosives and ignition. Investigators recovered ChatGPT history during their digital forensic examination. LVMPD said the searches included questions about explosive targets, ammunition velocity, and whether fireworks were legal in Arizona.

The supported claim is therefore narrow: Livelsberger used an AI chatbot as one research tool while preparing the attack. The public evidence does not establish that ChatGPT independently planned the event, supplied a complete bomb design, or was the decisive cause of the attack.

The Associated Press reported that OpenAI said ChatGPT provided publicly available information and warnings against harmful or illegal activity. Neither the police statements nor the later after-action report supports the headline-level claim that “ChatGPT planned the bombing.” Specific search prompts, construction instructions, quantities, and triggering details are not necessary to understand the case and should not be reproduced.

LVMPD’s January 7 investigative update and the Associated Press report on the AI evidence provide the public basis for this distinction.

Was the Las Vegas incident terrorism?

Authorities established that the explosion was intentional and premeditated. The later LVMPD report characterized it as a vehicle-borne improvised explosive-device attack. Investigators also found no public evidence that Livelsberger was directed by ISIS or another international terrorist organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The legal and investigative classification is less settled. In January 2025, the FBI said the domestic-terrorism question depended in part on whether the act was intended to advance a political objective. The FBI said that question remained undetermined. Livelsberger’s own letter calling the event something other than terrorism could not settle the issue; investigators explicitly cautioned that they could not simply accept the perpetrator’s characterization.

Question What the public record supports
Was the explosion deliberate? Yes. Investigators described it as intentional and premeditated.
Did he apparently act alone? Yes, based on the public investigative account.
Was it linked to ISIS or international terrorism? No evidence of such a connection was publicly established.
Was it legally domestic terrorism? The FBI said that question remained undetermined in January 2025; no later public final determination was located in the record summarized here.

The most accurate description is therefore a premeditated, vehicle-borne explosive attack apparently carried out by a lone actor, while avoiding the unqualified legal label “terrorist.”

Was it connected to the New Orleans attack?

The Las Vegas and New Orleans incidents occurred on the same day and initially appeared to share several features: both involved rented vehicles, both suspects had military backgrounds, and both incidents happened on New Year’s Day. Those similarities prompted early concern about a coordinated attack.

The FBI said on January 2 that there was no known definitive link. In a later interview, an FBI Las Vegas official said investigators found no phone, email, or electronic communication connecting Livelsberger to the New Orleans attacker and no indication that the two men knew each other. The FBI’s New Orleans investigative update is the primary public source for the initial statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accordingly, the two incidents should not be described as coordinated. The careful conclusion is that investigators found no public evidence establishing that Livelsberger and the New Orleans attacker knew each other or worked together.

What did the later LVMPD report reveal?

Early coverage was based largely on the first week of the investigation. LVMPD’s 78-page after-action report, released on November 3, 2025, added substantial detail about how investigators reconstructed the case. It is the most important later public record identified for this account.

More extensive digital and physical investigation

  • Investigators obtained 62 search warrants over approximately 10 days.
  • Two iPhones recovered from the Cybertruck remained sufficiently viable for forensic extraction.
  • The Digital Forensics Lab recovered ChatGPT history, internet searches, encrypted notes, email information, social-media activity, and the manifesto.
  • License-plate readers, cell records, financial records, surveillance footage, and charging-station video helped reconstruct Livelsberger’s movements.
  • Tesla representatives helped investigators access vehicle data and identify relevant charging-station footage.
  • The Cybertruck’s internal recording function had been turned off, but external cameras at Tesla charging stations supplied useful evidence.

More detail about the vehicle and evidence

The report says surveillance showed Livelsberger stopping before reaching the hotel and pouring what appeared to be fuel into the truck bed. Liquid was later seen leaking from the vehicle. Those observations helped investigators conclude that the explosive materials were being carried in the truck rather than generated by the Cybertruck’s electric powertrain.

The report also documents the forensic identification process, including the use of tattoo-imaging technology beneath severely damaged skin, and explains that the classified manifesto led to a federal handoff. It does not make the full manifesto public or resolve every question about Livelsberger’s motivation.

Lessons for emergency response

Because this is a car-related site, the report’s vehicle-response findings are notable. LVMPD identified operational gaps involving electric-vehicle fire hazards, protective equipment, command-post placement, resource tracking, and awareness of available forensic technology. Those are emergency-response lessons—not evidence that the Cybertruck caused the explosion or that its battery malfunctioned.

LVMPD announced the report through its November 3, 2025 release.

What remains unknown?

Even after the later police report, several important questions remain unresolved in the public record:

  • The full manifesto: Its reported existence and classification are documented, but the public has not seen the complete text or a public explanation of every reason for the classification.
  • The final terrorism classification: The FBI said the domestic-terrorism question was undetermined in January 2025. As of the latest public record summarized here, no later public FBI, Justice Department, or Defense Department report was located that definitively resolved it.
  • The precise weighting of motives: Political grievances, combat trauma, mental-health struggles, relationship problems, and a desire for spectacle all appear in the evidence. The record does not show which factor was most important.
  • Why that location and vehicle were chosen: The Trump hotel and Tesla branding created obvious symbolism, but the released writings do not provide a simple, definitive explanation.
  • The exact injury count: Initial reports said seven bystanders were injured; the later after-action report referred to six.
  • The complete technical sequence: Authorities established that materials were carried in the vehicle and that the blast was intentional, but a detailed public account of every mechanical step has not been released—and is not necessary to establish what happened.

The bottom line on Matthew Livelsberger

Matthew Livelsberger was a decorated, active-duty Army Special Forces master sergeant—not an unidentified bomber and not merely a former soldier—who used a rented Cybertruck to stage a premeditated explosion outside the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on January 1, 2025. He died by suicide immediately before the blast, and seven bystanders were initially reported injured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The evidence points to an apparently lone actor experiencing a complex personal and mental-health crisis while also expressing political, military, and social grievances and seeking a public “wake-up” moment. The case is best understood through all of those elements together. It should not be reduced to PTSD, a marital dispute, a political label, or the claim that an AI chatbot planned the attack. The public record establishes intentional violence, but it leaves the precise motive and final domestic-terrorism classification unresolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Matthew Livelsberger active duty or a veteran?

He was reported to be an active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces master sergeant on approved leave from an overseas assignment when he died. “Veteran” appeared in some coverage as a broad reference to his combat service, but he was not simply a former soldier at the time of the incident.

Was the Las Vegas Cybertruck explosion caused by a vehicle malfunction?

No public investigative account supports that explanation. LVMPD concluded that the Cybertruck was carrying the explosive materials and described the incident as a premeditated vehicle-borne attack.

Did ChatGPT plan the Las Vegas attack?

Police said Livelsberger used ChatGPT and other generative-AI tools while researching aspects of his plan. The public evidence does not establish that ChatGPT independently planned the attack or supplied a complete weapon design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was the Cybertruck explosion linked to the New Orleans attack?

Investigators found no public evidence that the two attackers knew each other or coordinated. The FBI said there was no known definitive link between the incidents.

Was Matthew Livelsberger legally determined to be a terrorist?

The FBI said in January 2025 that the domestic-terrorism question remained undetermined. The public record supports calling the incident intentional and premeditated, but it does not provide a final public federal terrorism determination.

The Bottom Line

In short: Livelsberger was an active-duty Army Green Beret on leave who died by suicide immediately before detonating a device carried in a rented Cybertruck outside a Las Vegas hotel. Investigators found evidence of extensive planning and multiple overlapping grievances, but no public final account establishes one definitive motive, an ISIS connection, coordination with the New Orleans attack, or a conclusive domestic-terrorism classification.
