The Beast Explained: What’s Really Inside the U.S. President’s Armored Cadillac

The Beast is not a production Cadillac but a custom-built, truck-derived armored state car. Here is what is confirmed about its design, protection and interior—and what remains rumor—plus the 2026 Camp Package SUV update.

The Beast is not a production Cadillac. It is the popular name for the U.S. president’s custom-built Cadillac-branded state car: a heavily modified, truck-derived protective vehicle built by General Motors for the U.S. Secret Service. Its public shape borrows cues from Cadillac sedans and SUVs, but its chassis, armor, communications equipment and countermeasures are not publicly specified.

The current sedan-style generation made its public debut on September 24, 2018. As of August 9, 2026, it remains the principal presidential limousine in public reporting, although the Secret Service has added Cadillac-branded Camp Package SUVs for difficult terrain and is developing a next-generation limousine with GM.

The quick answer: what is The Beast?

“The Beast” is a popular nickname for the U.S. presidential state car. Other names commonly used in reporting include “Cadillac One” and “First Car.” “Stagecoach” is also widely reported as a Secret Service code name, but it should be treated as an attributed report rather than a publicly documented official model designation.

The vehicle’s formal job is secure ground transportation for the president. It is operated by the U.S. Secret Service, whose protective mission extends beyond the president to include the vice president, their families, visiting foreign heads of state, former presidents and spouses, and designated national-security events.

There is not just one Beast. The Secret Service operates multiple visually similar presidential limousines. That provides a backup if the primary vehicle becomes unavailable and makes it harder for observers to identify the president’s exact position in a motorcade.

At a glance

  • Vehicle: Custom-built, Cadillac-branded presidential state car
  • Builder: General Motors
  • Current sedan generation: Publicly debuted September 24, 2018
  • Underlying architecture: Public reporting describes a heavily modified, truck-derived GM platform; the exact platform is not officially published
  • Weight: Frequently reported at roughly 15,000 to 20,000 pounds, but no current official figure has been released
  • Current status: Still the principal presidential limousine in public reporting as of August 9, 2026
  • 2026 addition: Cadillac-branded Camp Package SUVs for challenging terrain
  • Replacement timing: A next-generation limousine program is underway, but no public delivery date has been announced

Why does it look like a Cadillac if it is not a normal Cadillac?

The contradiction is intentional. General Motors designed and built the 2018 vehicle in Detroit, and said publicly that it resembles the Cadillac CT6. Its front end, grille, lights and body styling also echo Cadillac SUVs, particularly the Escalade family.

That resemblance is branding and design language, not a production-car specification. A standard Cadillac CT6, Escalade or other showroom model is not transformed into the presidential car by adding armor. The Beast is engineered around the protective mission first, then given a Cadillac exterior so it looks like a recognizable American luxury vehicle.

Public automotive reporting describes the vehicle as using a modified heavy-duty GM truck platform, with the previous generation often associated with the GMC TopKick or related truck architecture. That is a useful description of the vehicle’s apparent engineering direction, but not a complete official specification. The Secret Service and GM have not published the exact chassis, engine, transmission, armor layout, ballistic rating or performance figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction matters because many internet summaries turn a reported platform identification into a definitive claim. The most defensible wording is:

GM builds The Beast, and it wears Cadillac styling. Public reporting indicates a truck-derived foundation, but the complete engineering specification remains undisclosed.

What has actually been confirmed about the 2018 Beast?

The strongest publicly available information comes from Secret Service personnel who discussed the vehicle during a 2024 appearance on Jay Leno’s Garage. The crew was not allowed to film a complete view of the cabin, but the agents described or demonstrated several features. The full Jay Leno’s Garage segment is the primary public source for these details, with additional analysis from The War Zone.

Run-flat mobility equipment

Secret Service personnel said there is a run-flat device in each wheel. The point is not to make the car immune to damage. It is to give the vehicle a chance to keep moving after certain tire or wheel failures instead of becoming an immediate stationary target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run-flat technology is especially important in a vehicle carrying a large amount of armor and equipment. A conventional tire failure on a very heavy limousine would be more serious than on an ordinary sedan, and changing a wheel in an emergency is not a realistic protective plan.

A redundant fuel-delivery system

The agents also described a redundant auxiliary fuel pump. This is another example of resilience rather than invulnerability: if part of the fuel-delivery system is damaged or fails, a backup can help preserve mobility.

Non-opening windows designed for parades

The windows do not open. Their extended design is intended to make the president visible during ceremonies, parades and motorcades while keeping the cabin physically separated from the public. Secret Service personnel referred to the vehicle as a parade limousine.

This creates one of the car’s defining compromises. An opaque armored capsule might reduce visibility, but the president is also a ceremonial and political figure who must sometimes be seen by crowds. The Beast therefore uses fixed, reinforced windows to provide visibility without allowing the president to open a window or reach directly into the surrounding environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Presidential-level comfort

The security mission does not eliminate ordinary comfort. The seats have been described as offering heating, cooling and massage functions. Those features are confirmed for the vehicle discussed by the Secret Service personnel, although they tell us little about the classified systems elsewhere in the car.

Cadillac and GM parts where practical

Small parts do not all need to be unique. The 2024 discussion showed or described dashboard components resembling those used in Cadillac SUVs. Headlights and mirrors were also described as replaceable components drawn from existing GM products.

Using familiar parts can make replacement and maintenance easier. It does not mean the vehicle is mechanically standard. The supply chain for the Beast is tightly controlled, according to the Secret Service personnel, because even apparently ordinary components can reveal information about the vehicle or its support system.

Presidential seals and illuminated flags

The interior contains three presidential seals. Earlier versions used hand-stitched seals, while the current vehicle’s seals were described as laser-etched titanium. The two flags mounted at the front are illuminated by LED arrays, an unmistakable ceremonial detail that has little to do with armor but much to do with the vehicle’s role as a mobile symbol of the presidency.

What is reported about The Beast—but not officially specified?

Presidential limousines are deliberately opaque subjects. The Secret Service has a security reason not to publish a complete engineering sheet, and GM has declined to discuss protected portions of the project. As a result, many commonly repeated specifications come from media reports, earlier generations, observations of the vehicles or unnamed sources.

These reports may be plausible, but they should not be presented as a current official specification for every 2018-generation Beast.

Feature or figure Evidence level How it should be described
Approximately 15,000–20,000 pounds Reported estimate Automotive and NBC-derived coverage has reported figures in this range; no current official weight has been published
Seven seats Reported Attribute to media reporting rather than presenting it as a Secret Service specification
Very thick ballistic glass Reported, generation-dependent Five-inch glass is often repeated, but the current glass composition and tested rating are not public
Extremely thick armored doors or body sections Reported Armor is clearly part of the vehicle’s purpose, but exact thickness and materials are undisclosed
Independent air supply Widely reported Presidential limousines have long been reported to provide environmental isolation; the current system’s design and performance are not public
Medical equipment and blood matching the president’s blood type Widely reported Describe as a long-standing media report, not a publicly confirmed current-model feature
Secure government or satellite communications Strongly plausible and publicly discussed in general terms The car must support secure presidential communications, but the hardware and capabilities are undisclosed
Night vision, fuel-tank protection and countermeasures Reported or inferred Do not assign a specific current system without an official confirmation

For example, reports have described a seven-seat layout, roughly 20,000-pound weight, thick armor, multilayer windows, medical supplies and an independent air supply. Those claims are associated with reputable coverage, including Car and Driver and NBC-derived reporting, but they are not a comprehensive public specification from GM or the Secret Service.

How does the armor work?

The exact protection package is not public, so the useful explanation is conceptual rather than a list of secret measurements. The Beast combines structural strength, transparent armor, protected passenger space and redundancy designed to preserve movement.

1. A structure capable of carrying extreme weight

Armor, reinforced glass, specialized communications equipment and protective hardware add enormous mass compared with a civilian Cadillac. A heavy-duty frame, suspension, wheels, brakes and drivetrain are therefore necessary. This is one reason a truck-derived architecture is repeatedly reported: a normal luxury-sedan platform would not be an obvious foundation for such a load.

2. Transparent armor

The windows are fixed and heavily reinforced. Reports of glass approximately five inches thick refer to frequently repeated media descriptions and may relate to earlier vehicles or generalized presidential-limousine reporting. The current 2018 vehicle’s glass composition, construction and ballistic test rating have not been released.

“Bulletproof” is too absolute a word. A more accurate description is ballistically protected. Protection is tested against specified threats and conditions; it does not mean that a vehicle can withstand every projectile, explosive device or attack.

3. Armored doors and body sections

The doors and passenger compartment are widely reported to contain substantial armor. Exact materials, thicknesses, joints and overlaps are among the details that would reveal how the protection works and therefore are not publicly available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Mobility after damage

The run-flat devices and redundant fuel pump publicly described by Secret Service personnel show the central design goal: keep the vehicle moving after certain kinds of damage. The Beast is not meant to sit in place and absorb an unlimited attack. It is one part of an evacuation and response system in which continued movement can be more valuable than simply adding more armor.

5. Environmental isolation

Independent air supply and protection against chemical or biological threats have been widely reported as features of presidential limousines. It is reasonable to say the vehicle is designed around environmental isolation, but the current filtration, air-source and testing arrangements are not publicly documented.

6. Communications

The president needs secure communications while traveling. Former President Barack Obama famously described his limousine as a Cadillac “on a tank frame” and said he could call a nuclear submarine from it. That illustrates the vehicle’s communications role; it does not prove that the car has a particular nuclear-command interface or a literal “nuclear launch button.” The actual communications equipment and authority controls are not public.

What can the public really see inside?

Not much—and that limitation is part of the answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2024 Jay Leno’s Garage visit did not provide a full interior tour. The camera crew was not permitted to film the cabin, so there is no publicly available blueprint showing every screen, compartment, communications unit or protective system in the current car.

What can be responsibly said is that the cabin is designed for several jobs at once:

  • Carry the president and accompanying occupants in a protected compartment.
  • Maintain secure communications while moving.
  • Support medical contingencies.
  • Keep occupants isolated from the outside environment.
  • Allow the president to remain visible during public appearances without opening the windows.
  • Provide enough comfort for long journeys and demanding schedules.

Publicly described interior details include heated, cooled and massage-equipped seats, three presidential seals and dashboard elements related to Cadillac SUVs. A fold-out desk has been reported for the preceding 2009 vehicle, but it should not automatically be attributed to the 2018 Beast.

This is where many “inside The Beast” articles become misleading. They combine photographs of older limousines, reported features from earlier generations and general assumptions about government vehicles, then present the mixture as a confirmed interior tour of the current model.

The Beast is only one part of the presidential motorcade

The limousine is the most recognizable vehicle in the formation, but it is not a self-contained mobile fortress and does not operate alone. A presidential motorcade is a coordinated security system involving vehicles, personnel, advance planning, communications and local authorities.

Depending on the trip and threat environment, the formation may include:

  • Lead and route-clearing vehicles
  • Local police motorcycles and patrol cars
  • Secret Service SUVs
  • Counter-assault personnel and equipment
  • Communications and technical-security vehicles
  • Medical support and ambulance capability
  • Press vehicles
  • Additional armored limousines
  • Decoy or backup vehicles
  • Vehicles carrying staff, protective equipment and specialized personnel

The broader history of the presidential state car and motorcade shows why the limousine should be viewed as one layer rather than the entire defense plan. Advance teams inspect venues and routes, local law enforcement controls traffic, protective personnel watch the surrounding environment, and communications and medical teams prepare for contingencies.

The Beast protects the president at the point of contact. The motorcade protects the route, manages the surrounding space, supplies support and provides alternatives if the primary vehicle cannot continue.

Why use multiple identical limousines?

Similar-looking vehicles provide redundancy and uncertainty. A backup can replace the primary car. Vehicles can be positioned in advance, and observers cannot easily determine which limousine contains the president. The existence of a visually similar spare traveling with the 2018 vehicle was reported when that generation first appeared.

The Secret Service does not publish a complete operational fleet list, so claims about an exact number of Beasts should be treated cautiously. Public reports have offered different totals over the years.

How does the car travel overseas?

The presidential motorcade is often transported with the president’s overseas travel rather than assembled entirely from ordinary local vehicles. Automotive reporting has described multiple Beasts being moved by military cargo aircraft.

The exact aircraft, quantities, loading procedures and support arrangements vary by trip and are not all public. Some vehicles or support services may be provided locally through advance planning, but that does not mean the primary secure limousine is simply borrowed from the host country.

Why the Beast cannot be the perfect vehicle for every route

Extreme protection creates practical disadvantages. Armor adds mass, and mass affects acceleration, braking, tire loads, fuel consumption, maneuverability and maintenance. A long, heavy limousine can also be awkward on narrow streets, steep roads, rough ground or routes with limited turning space.

That produces several unavoidable trade-offs:

Requirement Design response Cost or limitation
Ballistic protection Armor, reinforced structure and fixed protective glass More weight, complexity and reduced agility
Continued movement after damage Run-flat devices and redundant systems Specialized components and maintenance
Public visibility Extended, non-opening parade windows Visibility must be balanced against isolation
Secure communications Dedicated protected systems Extra equipment, power and secrecy requirements
International travel Transport the presidential vehicles and support package Significant logistics and advance planning
Off-road or difficult terrain Use specialized armored SUVs No single vehicle can be optimal for both ceremony and rough ground

The Beast’s blind spots were also said by Secret Service personnel to have been improved over earlier generations. That is a reminder that a presidential vehicle is designed around practical driving and evacuation problems, not just armor thickness.

The 2026 update: Camp Package SUVs

In January 2026, Cadillac-branded armored SUVs appeared during President Donald Trump’s visit to Davos, Switzerland. In March, the Secret Service publicly described the vehicles as the Camp Package, intended for Camp David and other locations with challenging terrain. The agency’s public announcement described them as an addition to the protective fleet, not as a replacement for the sedan-style Beast.

The vehicles are full-size SUVs with Cadillac branding. Photographs show unusual proportions, reinforced window areas, heavy-duty wheels and specialized equipment. Those visual clues do not establish armor thickness, ballistic rating, engine specification or the exact GM platform underneath.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Public reporting indicates that the Camp Package is meant to solve a different problem from the parade limousine. A high, rugged SUV is more practical than a low, very heavy sedan on uneven roads, at Camp David or in locations where access routes are steep, muddy or otherwise difficult. In other words, the Secret Service is adding capability rather than choosing a single winner:

  • The Beast limousine: Formal appearances, urban travel and the traditional presidential-state-car role
  • Camp Package SUVs: Difficult terrain and locations where the limousine’s size, weight and ground clearance are disadvantages
  • Other armored SUVs and support vehicles: Motorcade security, personnel, communications, medical support and route-specific needs

The Camp Package should not be called “the new Beast” unless the Secret Service or GM explicitly confirms that it is the replacement presidential limousine. Current public descriptions support the opposite conclusion: it complements the Beast.

The next-generation presidential limousine

The next replacement limousine is also in development. The Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service awarded General Motors a contract reported at $14.8 million for development of a next-generation presidential limousine, with potential value of approximately $40.8 million through 2029. In March 2025, the Secret Service said it was too early to provide a specific delivery date or final vehicle cost. The contract figures were reported by Reuters.

The DHS FY2026 Congressional Budget Justification separately identifies funding for development of a next-generation presidential limousine, new or upgraded fully armored vehicles, Camp David limousine base vehicles, communications, countermeasures and other protective systems.

How presidential cars evolved from open automobiles to The Beast

The modern presidential state car was not born fully armored. It evolved as presidents’ mobility needs, public visibility and security threats changed.

Early presidential automobiles

Early presidents generally used ordinary automobiles or lightly modified vehicles. As the Secret Service’s protective responsibilities expanded and threats changed, the presidential car became a purpose-built security tool rather than simply a prestigious limousine.

1939: Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Sunshine Special

The 1939 Lincoln Sunshine Special was the first car built expressly for presidential use. It was designed around President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s mobility needs and his preference for riding with the top down. The vehicle’s open configuration also made it suitable for public appearances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the car was modified with armor plate, bullet-resistant glass and early run-flat-style tires. The Sunshine Special preserved by The Henry Ford illustrates an important recurring pattern: the presidential vehicle changes when the threat environment changes.

1961: Kennedy’s SS-100-X

President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 Lincoln Continental was a convertible designated SS-100-X. It had a removable transparent roof that allowed the president to be seen. The Warren Commission record describes the rigid plastic bubble top used in Dallas as neither bulletproof nor bullet-resistant.

On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated while riding in the vehicle in Dallas. The event accelerated the move away from highly exposed presidential cars toward increasingly enclosed, armored and controlled designs. The Henry Ford’s research on the Kennedy limousine documents the car’s unusual design and historical significance.

2009: The previous major Beast generation

The preceding major presidential-limousine generation entered service for President Barack Obama’s inauguration in January 2009. It carried Cadillac branding but was custom-built rather than being a production Cadillac DTS with simple modifications. Public reporting described it as a truck-based armored limousine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Features reported for that generation should not automatically be assigned to the 2018 vehicle. This is one of the most common sources of confusion in articles about The Beast.

2018: The current sedan-style generation

The current sedan-like Beast appeared publicly in New York on September 24, 2018, during President Trump’s visit for the United Nations General Assembly. It retained Cadillac styling while adopting newer design cues associated with the CT6 and Escalade. GM confirmed its Cadillac resemblance and Detroit construction but did not disclose the protected engineering details.

2026: A broader protective fleet

The 2026 Camp Package SUVs and the next-generation limousine program show that presidential transportation is still evolving. The direction is not simply toward a more heavily armored sedan. It is toward a fleet in which different vehicles handle ceremony, urban travel, difficult terrain, communications and other mission requirements.

What happens when a Beast retires?

Older presidential cars are not automatically treated like ordinary collectible vehicles. A modern Beast contains classified or security-sensitive components, and even its construction methods may reveal information about current protection practices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older vehicles may be retained for training, testing or controlled evaluation, and some have been destroyed. Exact disposal arrangements for every vehicle are not public. Earlier historic cars can be preserved in museums because their technology and protective methods are no longer operationally sensitive. The Sunshine Special, for example, survives in the collection of The Henry Ford.

That is why readers should not expect every retired Beast to appear in a public museum. A presidential car can be historically important and still be unsuitable for ordinary public display.

Why the unknowns are important

The missing data is not an accidental gap in automotive journalism. Exact armor thickness, glass composition, tested threat ratings, communications architecture, filtration performance, countermeasures and emergency procedures could help an attacker understand the vehicle’s limits.

That does not mean every rumor is true simply because officials do not deny it. Secrecy creates uncertainty, not evidence. The responsible approach is to separate three categories:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirmed: Information directly disclosed or demonstrated by GM or Secret Service personnel, such as the Cadillac branding, fixed parade windows, run-flat devices, auxiliary fuel pump and seat functions.
  2. Reported: Details attributed to reputable media, such as estimated weight, seat count, thick glass, heavy armor, medical provisions and independent air.
  3. Unverified: Repeated claims about launchers, oil slicks, tear gas, electrified handles or specific nuclear controls.

This distinction also prevents features from one generation being silently carried into another. The 1939 Sunshine Special, 1961 SS-100-X, 2009 limousine and 2018 Beast are historically related but technically different vehicles.

Even The Beast can have ordinary mechanical problems

Specialized protection does not eliminate mundane engineering failures. In 2025, a reported incident involving President Trump’s vehicle left a rear compartment open before the problem was repaired. The episode was reported by The Daily Beast.

That incident does not establish a security breach, but it illustrates a useful point: a presidential limousine is still a machine with doors, latches, seals, electronics, tires and moving parts. Its systems are more specialized and more closely controlled than those of a civilian vehicle, yet they remain subject to maintenance problems, component failures and operational constraints.

The response to those risks is not reliance on one perfect car. It is redundancy: trained drivers, backup vehicles, advance planning, support teams, communications and procedures for moving the president if the primary vehicle cannot continue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Beast an actual Cadillac model?

No. General Motors builds it for the Secret Service as a custom protective vehicle. It uses Cadillac branding and styling, but it is not a production CT6, Escalade or other showroom Cadillac.

How much does The Beast weigh?

Reputable media reports commonly estimate roughly 15,000 to 20,000 pounds. The Secret Service and GM have not published an official current weight, so the figure should be treated as an estimate.

Can the public see inside the current Beast?

Only in limited glimpses and descriptions. During a 2024 Jay Leno’s Garage visit, Secret Service personnel discussed features including the seats, seals and windows, but the crew was not permitted to film a complete interior tour.

Did the 2026 Camp Package SUVs replace The Beast?

No, based on the Secret Service’s public description. The SUVs were introduced to complement the limousine, particularly at Camp David and other locations with challenging terrain. A separate next-generation limousine program is under development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The Beast is best understood as a purpose-built protective system on four wheels, not as a luxury Cadillac with armor added afterward. Its public features include run-flat mobility equipment, redundant fuel delivery, fixed parade windows, specialized comfort systems and Cadillac styling. Its exact armor, communications, environmental-protection and countermeasure specifications remain undisclosed.

The 2026 Camp Package SUVs reinforce the central lesson: there is no single perfect presidential vehicle. The limousine handles the visible state-car role, while SUVs, backups, motorcade teams, communications, medical support and advance security cover the situations the limousine cannot handle alone.
