Mercedes-Benz has a much broader SUV range than its familiar GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS naming might suggest. The lineup includes compact crossovers, three-row family SUVs, coupe-style models, battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, the dedicated off-road G-Class, and two Maybach luxury SUVs.

This comparison uses the Mercedes-Benz USA lineup shown on August 9, 2026. Prices are starting U.S. MSRPs and can change; they exclude dealer charges, taxes, registration, and options.

Mercedes SUV size hierarchy

For the conventional gasoline SUV range, the order is straightforward:

  1. GLA: smallest crossover.
  2. GLB: compact, upright SUV with an available third row.
  3. GLC: midsize two-row SUV.
  4. GLE: larger midsize SUV with available seven-passenger seating.
  5. GLS: full-size SUV with three rows as standard.

The electric EQB, EQE SUV, and EQS SUV broadly occupy compact, midsize, and large-luxury positions, but they do not duplicate their gasoline counterparts exactly in dimensions or interior packaging. The G-Class is best viewed as its own off-road model, not simply as a larger GLS.

GLA vs. GLB: the compact Mercedes SUVs

GLA

The GLA is the least expensive way into a new Mercedes-Benz SUV at $41,500. The GLA 250 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with mild-hybrid assistance and produces 221 horsepower. The AMG GLA 35 raises output to 302 horsepower.

Its five-seat cabin and maximum cargo volume of 50.5 cubic feet make it suitable for a small family or couple, but it is less useful than the GLB for carrying people in three rows. Choose the GLA when exterior size, price, and maneuverability matter more than maximum passenger space.

GLB

The GLB starts only $2,300 above the GLA, but its square body provides a more useful interior. Five seats are standard and a third row is optional, making the GLB the most affordable Mercedes SUV available with seven-passenger seating. However, the rearmost row is not spacious: published third-row legroom is just 29.1 inches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The GLB 250 also makes 221 horsepower, while the AMG GLB 35 produces 302 horsepower. Its maximum listed cargo capacity reaches 62.0 cubic feet. For buyers who need occasional extra seats or a more practical cargo area, the GLB is the stronger compact choice.

GLC vs. GLE: the two midsize choices

GLC SUV

The GLC is a five-seat midsize SUV with a $49,550 starting price. The regular lineup ranges from the 255-hp GLC 300 to the 671-hp AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE. In between are the plug-in-hybrid GLC 350e and AMG GLC 43.

The GLC 300 provides 21.9 to 56.3 cubic feet of cargo space. It is the better fit than a GLE for buyers who want a premium two-row SUV without moving into the larger model’s price and footprint.

The GLC 350e is a plug-in hybrid, not a fully electric vehicle. Mercedes-Benz USA says it can travel up to 54 miles on battery power alone. That makes it relevant for owners who can charge at home but still want gasoline range for longer trips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GLE SUV

The GLE is the larger and more versatile midsize option. It seats five by default, with seven-passenger seating available; it is not automatically a three-row SUV. The GLE 350 4MATIC offers 33.3 to 74.9 cubic feet of cargo space and a maximum listed towing capacity of 7,700 pounds.

Powertrains include gasoline mild-hybrid models, the plug-in-hybrid GLE 450e, an inline-six GLE 450, the V8-powered GLE 580, and AMG versions. Output ranges from 255 horsepower to 603 horsepower. Choose it over the GLC when cargo room, towing, available third-row seating, or stronger powertrains justify the added size.

GLC Coupe vs. GLE Coupe

The GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe are separate Mercedes-Benz model families, not simple trim levels of the regular SUVs. Both trade some rear-roof practicality for a more aggressively sloped profile.

Model Starting MSRP Power range Best suited to
GLC Coupe $59,650 255–671 hp Buyers wanting GLC dimensions with a sportier roofline
GLE Coupe $77,250 375–603 hp Buyers prioritizing performance and styling over maximum utility

The AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE Coupe is listed at 3.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. The AMG GLE 63 S Coupe is listed at 3.7 seconds. Neither coupe is the practical choice if rear headroom and cargo flexibility are top priorities; the standard GLC and GLE are better suited to those jobs.

Which Mercedes electric SUV is the right size?

EQB

The EQB is Mercedes-Benz’s compact electric SUV and the only current compact Mercedes EV explicitly offered with seating for up to seven. The EQB 250+ starts at $53,050 and uses a 70.5-kWh battery, front-wheel drive, and an EPA-estimated 250-mile range. EQB 300 4MATIC and EQB 350 4MATIC models add all-wheel drive.

With up to 61.8 cubic feet of cargo space, the EQB is the electric alternative for buyers who value a relatively small footprint and available extra seating.

EQE SUV

The EQE SUV is a five-seat midsize electric model starting at $64,950. The rear-wheel-drive EQE 320+ has a 96.0-kWh battery and an EPA-estimated 302-mile range. The EQE 320 4MATIC has a 90.5-kWh battery and a 253-mile EPA-estimated range.

The AMG EQE SUV produces 617 horsepower and has a 230-mile EPA-estimated range. Its cargo capacity is listed at 14 to 55 cubic feet, so it emphasizes electric luxury and performance more than maximum load volume.

EQS SUV

The EQS SUV is Mercedes-Benz’s full-size electric luxury SUV. It starts at $89,950, seats five, and is offered as the 355-hp EQS 400 4MATIC or 536-hp EQS 550 4MATIC. It is the electric counterpart to the GLS in luxury positioning, although the two models are not identical in seating configuration: the GLS has three rows as standard, while the EQS SUV is a five-seat model.

2027 GLC Electric SUV

Mercedes-Benz USA currently lists the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric SUV in its catalog, but the dedicated U.S. page identifies it as a 2027 model and shows “Price Coming Soon.” The page cites a dual-motor system producing 360 kW, but complete U.S. pricing and specification information is not yet published.

European WLTP range figures, European trim names, and overseas pricing should not be treated as confirmed U.S. details for this vehicle.

GLS vs. G-Class

GLS

The GLS is the mainstream full-size Mercedes-Benz SUV. It starts at $90,250 and offers three rows as standard, with either six-seat or seven-seat configurations. The second row can use a bench seat or individual captain’s chairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power ranges from 375 horsepower in the GLS 450 4MATIC to 603 horsepower in the AMG GLS 63. It is the logical Mercedes choice for buyers who need a large, comfortable SUV for passengers and long-distance travel.

G-Class

The G-Class starts at $153,900 and serves a different purpose. It is a five-seat luxury off-road SUV with a distinctive upright design and a far more specialized mission than the GLS. The U.S. range includes the gasoline G 550, the electric G 580 with EQ Technology, and the AMG G 63.

The electric G 580 produces 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of combined torque. The AMG G 63 produces 577 horsepower. The G 580 is not an EQS-style luxury crossover; it is the battery-electric version of the G-Class and retains that model’s off-road identity.

Mercedes-Maybach SUVs

The Maybach models sit at the top of the range, sharing basic SUV family names with the GLS and EQS but adding a much higher level of luxury and exclusivity.

  • Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600: starts at $180,000 and uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mild-hybrid powertrain producing 550 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-Benz estimates 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
  • Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680: also starts at $180,000. Its dual-motor electric powertrain produces 649 horsepower and 700 lb-ft, using a 118-kWh battery. Mercedes-Benz estimates 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Five seats are standard, with an optional four-seat configuration.

The Maybach GLS is the gasoline luxury flagship; the Maybach EQS 680 provides the same ultra-luxury positioning with an electric powertrain.

Mercedes SUV powertrains explained

Powertrain type Examples What it means
Gasoline mild hybrid GLA 250, GLC 300, GLE 350 A gasoline engine receives 48-volt electric assistance. These are not plug-in hybrids and cannot operate as full battery-electric vehicles.
Plug-in hybrid GLC 350e, GLE 450e, AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE A larger battery can be charged externally and provides electric driving for a limited distance before the gasoline system becomes more important.
Battery electric EQB, EQE SUV, EQS SUV, G 580, Maybach EQS 680 These vehicles are powered by electric motors and do not use a gasoline engine for propulsion.
AMG performance AMG GLA 35, AMG GLE 63 S, AMG GLS 63 AMG versions prioritize acceleration, handling, and power. Published horsepower numbers should be compared carefully because Mercedes may quote engine output or combined system output depending on the vehicle.

Which Mercedes-Benz SUV should you buy?

  1. Choose the GLA if you want the lowest starting price and the smallest SUV footprint.
  2. Choose the GLB if you need more usable cargo space or an optional third row, accepting limited rearmost legroom.
  3. Choose the GLC for a balanced five-seat midsize SUV, with gasoline, plug-in-hybrid, and AMG choices.
  4. Choose the EQB for a compact electric SUV with an available seven-seat configuration.
  5. Choose the GLE if you need more room, available seven-passenger seating, or up to 7,700 pounds of listed towing capacity.
  6. Choose the EQE SUV for a five-seat electric luxury SUV with a maximum listed range of 302 miles in rear-wheel-drive EQE 320+ form.
  7. Choose the GLS when three-row seating is essential and a full-size luxury SUV is appropriate.
  8. Choose the EQS SUV for a large, five-seat electric luxury SUV.
  9. Choose the G-Class for its off-road character and iconic design rather than maximum interior efficiency.
  10. Choose a Maybach when top-tier luxury, presentation, and exclusivity matter more than value.

Models not currently listed in the U.S. lineup

EQC and EQA should not be included as current Mercedes-Benz USA SUV choices in this comparison. They do not appear in the current U.S. SUV catalog. The current electric SUV lineup consists of the EQB, EQE SUV, EQS SUV, Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, G 580 with EQ Technology, and the incoming electric GLC.

The GLB is the compact choice for occasional third-row use, the GLC is the balanced two-row midsize option, the GLE adds space and towing capability, and the GLS is the proper full-size three-row model. Electric shoppers can choose among the compact EQB, midsize EQE SUV, and large EQS SUV, while the G-Class remains a separate off-road icon rather than a conventional step in the size ladder.

Before comparing lease or purchase offers, verify the exact model year, drivetrain, options, destination charge, and dealer pricing. Mercedes-Benz trims and MSRPs can change during the model year.
