Can I Put E85 in My Car? What That Yellow Cap Does—and Doesn’t—Tell You

A yellow cap is only a clue, not proof your car can use E85. Confirm the vehicle is flex-fuel, then weigh local prices against E85’s lower energy per gallon.

A yellow fuel cap may prompt the right question, but it is not enough by itself to establish that a car can use E85. Check whether the exact vehicle is a flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) in its owner’s manual or an official vehicle-identification resource. If it is, compare E85 and gasoline by likely cost per mile—not just by the price per gallon.

Does a yellow cap mean your car can use E85?

No universal compatibility conclusion follows from cap color alone. The reviewed federal sources do not establish yellow as a definitive E85 indicator. Look instead for an E85, Flex Fuel, or FFV badge or plaque, then confirm the vehicle’s capability in its owner’s manual or with the AFDC vehicle identification resource.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says E85 is for flex-fuel vehicles specifically designed to use it, as well as gasoline or ethanol blends from E0 through E85. A non-FFV should not be treated as E85-compatible because a cap is yellow or because the fuel fits the filler neck. See the EPA’s E85 Fuel guidance and the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s explanation of ethanol use.

How to check your specific vehicle

  1. Find the vehicle’s exact make, model, and model year.
  2. Check the owner’s manual for E85 or flex-fuel approval.
  3. Use the AFDC vehicle lookup to verify whether that configuration is listed as an FFV.
  4. If the documentation and lookup do not clearly confirm E85 capability, use the fuel specified for the vehicle and ask the manufacturer or dealer before filling with E85.

Why a lower E85 price per gallon may not save money

E85 has less energy per gallon than regular gasoline, so an FFV generally travels fewer miles on a gallon of E85 than on a gallon of gasoline. The size of the fuel-economy difference depends on the vehicle and the blend. For a fair comparison, use cost per mile or adjust the pump prices for the fuel’s energy content.

REV X E85 Super Tester - Reusable Gasoline Ethanol Testing Kit
  • Test your fuel for proper ethanol levels to ensure it does not damage your engine. Test kit also tests for e85.
  • Simple test to discover the percentage of ethanol alcohol in gasoline. With readings of e10, e15, e20, e25, e80, e85 and e90
  • High levels of ethanol could damage your fuel system and lower your fuel mileage.
  • Ethanol can damage motors not equipped or designed to use it, test your gasoline first.
  • Easy to read label and instructions that is laminated to prevent fading or the ink rubbing off. Testing bottle can be reused over and over.

In a March 2026 analysis, the EPA estimated that an average E85 blend containing 74% ethanol has about 21% less volumetric energy than E10. Under that assumption, E85 would need to cost about 21% less per gallon than E10 to reach energy-equivalent pricing. This is an average-model comparison, not a prediction of a particular car’s fuel economy or savings; the purchaser may not know E85’s exact ethanol percentage. The assumptions and limitations are in the EPA’s March 2026 regulatory impact analysis.

A quick local comparison

As a rough energy-equivalent check, multiply the local E10 price by 0.79. If E85 is at or below that result, its price is roughly competitive on energy content under the EPA’s 74%-ethanol average assumption. For a vehicle-specific estimate, compare the expected miles per gallon on each fuel, if available, and calculate:

  • Reusable Over and Over: This fuel test bottle allows you to measure ethanol or E85 levels in your gasoline hundreds of times, with a screen-printed label made to last
  • Quick and Clear Results: Test your gasoline levels in 5 minutes and three simple steps. Add water to the Water Fill Line. Then add gas to the Gasoline Fill Line. Shake well and wait five minutes. Gasoline and water will separate to provide clear results
  • Easy to Read Label: With bright Water and Gasoline Fill lines and clear percentage levels, measuring gasohol, ethanol or E85 levels in your fuel has never been easier
  • Protect Your Engine in Minutes: Ensure correct ethanol levels to protect and maintain your engine with our quick 5 minute test. Whether you are looking for an ethanol test kit or an E85 test kit, this bottle will correctly measure alcohol levels in both types of gasoline

Estimated fuel cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ miles per gallon.

For example, an E85 price that is 15% below E10 does not meet the EPA analysis’s roughly 21% energy-price discount benchmark. That does not prove every driver will spend more, because actual ethanol share and vehicle performance vary; it does show why the posted gallon price alone can mislead.

What current official price figures can—and cannot—tell you

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) lists a national retail snapshot of $3.31 per gallon for E85 and $4.09 per gallon for gasoline for April 1–15, 2026. These dated national averages are not the price at a particular station or a live quote; fuel prices vary by location and time. Check the local pump price before deciding. The figures and the AFDC’s qualification are on its Fuel Prices page.

What E85 actually contains

Despite its name, E85 does not always contain exactly 85% ethanol. AFDC defines U.S. E85 as a blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol, with the proportion varying by geography and season. That variation affects energy content, and the blend at a pump may not be obvious to the buyer.

Before you choose a pump

  • Verify eligibility: Confirm the exact vehicle is an FFV in its manual or an official lookup; do not rely on cap color alone.
  • Compare the right cost: Account for E85’s lower energy per gallon using local prices and, when possible, the vehicle’s expected fuel economy.
  • Check local conditions: E85’s ethanol share and retail prices vary. Use a station locator and current local prices rather than assuming a national snapshot applies.
