What to Inspect on a Used Electric SUV Before Buying

A practical pre-purchase checklist for used electric SUVs, from VIN and battery records to charging tests, tires, flood clues and EV-qualified inspections.

What to Inspect on a Used Electric SUV Before Buying

Before buying a used electric SUV, verify its history and recalls, ask for documented battery-health information, confirm charging compatibility, and inspect tires, brakes, bodywork and cabin systems. Arrange an independent inspection by a technician qualified to work on EVs if battery, charging or high-voltage concerns remain. A dashboard range estimate or a brief charging test cannot certify battery health.

Before you meet the seller: check the VIN, warranty and charging fit

  1. Get the vehicle details. Ask for the VIN, model year, make, model, trim, mileage, title status, and any battery, maintenance, collision and recall-repair records.
  2. Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to look for unrepaired recalls. Ask the seller for repair proof, and check relevant investigations or manufacturer communications for the exact year, make and model.
  3. Verify battery coverage for this vehicle. Ask the manufacturer or dealer to confirm the original in-service date and remaining capacity-warranty terms for the VIN. Check the mileage limit, capacity threshold, transfer rules, exclusions and claim process; do not assume terms transfer unchanged to a second owner.
  4. Make sure the charging setup suits your use. Confirm the connector and the vehicle’s AC and DC charging capabilities against your home equipment and likely public charging routes. Charging rates and plugs vary by vehicle; consult the owner’s manual and manufacturer information for the exact year and trim. Ask which portable charging equipment is included.
  5. Request the paperwork. Ask for maintenance, collision, battery, charging, tire and recall-repair records. If the seller advertises a warranty, request the complete written terms and check the FTC Used Car Rule Buyers Guide.

At the vehicle: inspect history, bodywork and flood clues

Match the VIN on the vehicle to the paperwork. Look for inconsistent panel gaps, paint or glass that may suggest repairs, and ask about any damage. NHTSA frames the flood-history question directly: “How do I make sure a vehicle I’m buying wasn’t previously damaged in a flood?” Its flood-damaged vehicle guidance cautions that a clean appearance does not rule out flood damage.

Check the trunk, glove box and areas beneath the dashboard for mud, waterlines or a musty smell. Unusual fragrance can be an attempt to mask odors. Look underneath for corrosion inconsistent with the vehicle’s age or location. Review title history and consider an NMVTIS title-history check; no single clean-looking area proves a vehicle was never flooded.

Inspect the tires, wheels and brakes

  • Check every tire for cuts, bulges, cracks, uneven wear and adequate remaining tread. Compare wear across the tires; uneven patterns can be a reason to ask about alignment, suspension or maintenance.
  • Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, using the pressure on the door placard or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.
  • Confirm replacement tires meet the vehicle’s specification. NHTSA notes that EVs are often heavier and may need EV-specific tires.
  • Look over wheels for damage and ask about tire age and replacement history. A tread-depth gauge can help measure tread, but it does not replace checking for damage and uneven wear.
  • Check brake operation and listen for abnormal noises. Regenerative braking does not eliminate conventional brakes: NHTSA notes that conventional brakes still operate in some conditions.

Test cabin equipment, warnings and charging

With the seller’s permission, test the HVAC, windows, locks, cameras, lights, wipers, seat belts, infotainment and any driver-assistance features fitted to that trim. Read every warning message rather than treating it as a minor display issue. Check that both keys and the charging items promised in the sale are present.

Inspect the charging connector and cable for visible damage. If the seller permits and you have access to a compatible charger, connect it and confirm charging starts without warnings. A short test only shows that charging began under those conditions; it does not establish full battery health. Follow the owner’s manual and manufacturer charging instructions.

Take a safe test drive

On a safe route, check acceleration, steering, suspension noises, alignment, warning alerts, regenerative-braking behavior and conventional braking. Test the regenerative-braking settings if available, but assess the brakes as well. Note any vibration, pulling, unexpected noises or alerts and have unresolved concerns checked before purchase.

Assess battery health and remaining coverage

Ask for a written battery-health report from the manufacturer or a qualified EV shop where one is available. Find out how the report was produced and what it does—and does not—measure. State of health is an estimate or reporting concept; the available guidance does not establish a universal cross-brand test method or pass/fail threshold.

Do not treat displayed range alone as a battery-capacity test. Range changes with factors including temperature, recent driving, HVAC use, terrain and charge level; NHTSA also notes that temperature affects battery performance and lifespan. A vehicle-specific diagnostic report provides more useful evidence than a single range reading, but its method and limitations still matter.

Battery-warranty thresholds are manufacturer- and vehicle-specific, not a universal standard. BMW, for example, describes a 75% state-of-health threshold for specified eligible models and terms; that example should not be applied to other makes or BMW vehicles outside those terms. Check the actual warranty documents and VIN-specific eligibility rather than relying on a badge or a general statement about warranty length.

Get a qualified EV inspection before signing

If battery, charging, underbody or diagnostic concerns remain, have an independent technician qualified in EV high-voltage systems inspect the vehicle. NHTSA says, “It is important that a qualified technician with specialized EV-specific high-voltage training service your EV or HEV.” Do not open or attempt to service the traction battery yourself; high-voltage work requires specialized training and equipment, and unqualified work can cause severe injury or death.
