BMW stopped offering heated-seat access by subscription and returned the feature to factory-option treatment. The change applied to selected markets, not the United States, and did not mean BMW was ending every paid on-demand feature.
What changed with BMW heated-seat subscriptions?
In September 2023, BMW board member for sales and marketing Pieter Nota said the company would no longer offer seat heating through its Functions on Demand service. Customers would choose heated seats as factory equipment when ordering a car: the feature would either be fitted from the factory or not.

BMW had offered subscriptions to activate certain hardware features already installed in a vehicle. The arrangement meant a customer could pay later to enable equipment rather than include it in the original configuration. BMW’s decision reversed that approach for seat heating.
Why did BMW stop offering heated seats by subscription?
Nota attributed the reversal to low uptake and customers’ perception that they were paying twice for hardware already in the car. “People feel that they paid double—which was actually not true, but perception is reality, I always say. So that was the reason we stopped that,” he told Ars Technica in September 2023 (Ars Technica).

That is BMW’s explanation, not a finding from an independent customer survey. No independently reported subscription uptake rate or quantified measure of customer backlash is established in the cited coverage.
Where was the offer available?
Contemporary reporting identified the UK and South Korea among the selected markets where BMW offered Functions on Demand hardware activations. The heated-seat subscription was not available in the United States, according to reporting at the time. Availability, prices and terms varied by market, so the offer should not be treated as a universal BMW policy (CBS MoneyWatch).

In 2022, a BMW spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch that “Options like heated seats are ordered on over 90% of the BMW’s sold in the USA,” (CBS MoneyWatch). That was BMW’s claim about cars sold in the US, not an audited figure or a global statistic.

Did a BMW buyer have to subscribe for factory-ordered heated seats?
No. If heated seats were ordered as factory equipment with the vehicle, they did not require a later subscription. The on-demand offer concerned activating certain features that had not been selected at purchase, and its availability depended on the market. A reader question about a 2022 BMW with heated seats was cited by CBS MoneyWatch; the key distinction is whether the feature was included in the car’s original specification (CBS MoneyWatch).

Does BMW still offer subscription features?
Yes. Nota said BMW would continue to emphasize software- and service-related products, including driving assistance, parking assistance and some services that require data transmission. Those are digital functions or services, distinct from charging customers later to unlock seat-heating hardware already fitted to a car (Ars Technica).
