The best car rental company depends on what you value: fast airport pickup, low total cost, broad local coverage, a family-friendly process, or access to newer and more distinctive vehicles. No single brand wins every trip.
For most frequent airport renters, National is the strongest overall choice. Enterprise is the safest all-purpose recommendation, Alamo works especially well for family vacations, Budget is often worth checking for a low starting price, and Sixt stands out when the vehicle itself matters.

| Overall availability and service | Enterprise | Large neighborhood and airport network, with the highest score in the 2025 J.D. Power airport study. | Counter-bypass options vary by location. |
| Family and leisure trips | Alamo | Designed around vacation destinations and a relatively simple rental process. | Coverage is less extensive outside major leisure markets. |
| Low advertised rates | Budget | Often among the cheapest brands in comparable price comparisons. | Fees and add-ons can erase the initial saving. |

Best overall for frequent renters: National
National is the best pick when airport efficiency and vehicle choice matter more than getting the lowest possible quote. Its main advantage is Emerald Aisle, available at participating U.S. and Canadian locations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Reserve a Midsize car.
- Go to the Emerald Aisle or, if eligible, the Executive Area.
- Choose an available vehicle from the aisle.
- Pay the reserved Midsize rate rather than a separate upgrade fee for cars included in the aisle.
Executive members receive additional benefits, including access to the Executive Area and program-specific upgrade terms. National says Executive status generally requires 12 paid rentals or 40 paid rental days in a calendar year, unless it comes from an eligible corporate or credit-card benefit.

National ranked first in Travel + Leisure’s 2026 reader survey, which considered vehicle selection, availability, location, service, and value.
Choose National if: you rent regularly, use major airports, or prefer selecting a car from available inventory.
Look elsewhere if: the local National quote is much higher, the destination has limited National inventory, or you need a particular make and model guaranteed.
Best all-purpose choice: Enterprise
Enterprise is the easiest default recommendation for many drivers. It has a very large network, including neighborhood branches that can be more convenient than airport facilities. Enterprise Holdings reported more than 10,000 locations across more than 90 countries for its Enterprise, National, and Alamo brands; Enterprise alone has more than 9,500 locations according to comparative industry data.
Enterprise ranked first in the 2025 J.D. Power North America Rental Car Satisfaction Study, scoring 734 out of 1,000. The study surveyed 8,263 business and leisure travelers who rented at airport locations and evaluated pickup, drop-off, staff, vehicle quality, value, trust, and digital tools. National scored 721.
Enterprise Plus awards one point per dollar on qualifying base rental charges. Free rental days start at 600 points, and points can expire after more than 36 months without qualifying activity.
Choose Enterprise if: you need a nearby branch, want a conventional mainstream rental experience, or prioritize service over the absolute lowest rate.

Best for families and vacations: Alamo
Alamo is particularly well suited to leisure travel, including family trips, resort stays, and rentals from popular vacation airports. It shares Enterprise Holdings’ corporate infrastructure and may share fleet resources with Enterprise and National, but the brands are not interchangeable. An Alamo reservation does not give you Enterprise Plus benefits, National’s Emerald Aisle access, or access to another brand’s exact inventory.
Alamo scored 79 in the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index car-rental results, tying Avis for the highest score among the individually listed brands in that table. Enterprise and National each scored 76.
Before booking, check that the location has enough vehicles in the class you need. Availability can tighten quickly during school holidays and peak vacation periods, particularly for SUVs, minivans, and larger family vehicles.
Choose Alamo if: you are taking a leisure trip and want a straightforward airport or resort rental process.

Budget is usually one of the first companies worth comparing when price is the priority. A NerdWallet analysis of comparable seven-night rentals found Budget among the least expensive brands, with an average of $333 during its research period. National averaged $679 in the same analysis. Those figures are historical comparison averages, not quotes for every destination.
Budget’s headline rate can be misleading if you compare only the daily base price. Request or calculate the full total, including:
- Airport concession-recovery and facility fees
- Taxes and government surcharges
- Young-renter charges
- Additional-driver fees
- Fuel costs or prepaid fuel
- One-way charges
- Optional damage, liability, roadside, and personal-accident products
- Deposit or card-authorization holds
- Any mileage limit
Choose Budget if: the final checkout total is genuinely lower and you are comfortable with a more basic rental experience. Do not assume it will be cheapest for every route or date.

Best for premium and newer-feeling vehicles: Sixt
Sixt is a good comparison when the car is part of the experience. It is frequently recognized for newer or more upscale sedans, SUVs, and distinctive vehicle categories. Travel + Leisure ranked Sixt third in its 2026 reader survey, behind National and Enterprise.
The trade-off is coverage. Sixt has a smaller U.S. network than the largest rental groups, so it may be an excellent choice at one airport and inconvenient or unavailable in a smaller market. Check branch hours and after-hours return instructions before paying a premium.
Choose Sixt if: you care about presentation, equipment, or premium vehicle availability more than having the largest possible network.
Best for international rentals: Avis and Hertz
International travelers may reasonably choose Avis or Hertz when branch coverage is more important than domestic satisfaction rankings. Comparative figures place Avis Budget Group at more than 10,000 locations in about 180 countries and territories, and Hertz at approximately 11,600 locations in about 160 countries. Enterprise Holdings reports more than 10,000 locations in over 90 countries, while Sixt has more than 2,200 locations in roughly 100 countries.
These are brand-group figures, not a promise that a branch exists at your destination. International locations may be operated by licensees, and local rules can differ substantially. Confirm accepted payment methods, required documents, insurance rules, cross-border permissions, mileage, and one-way restrictions for the actual country and branch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to choose the right rental company
- Start with the exact pickup location. Airport and neighborhood branches can have very different prices, hours, taxes, and inventories.
- Compare the same vehicle class. A compact car at one company is not necessarily equivalent to a midsize SUV at another. Compare seats, luggage capacity, fuel type, and drivetrain.
- Use the final price. Expand the quote and include mandatory fees, young-driver costs, additional drivers, fuel, and insurance products.
- Check the cancellation terms. A slightly higher refundable rate may be safer than a cheap prepaid reservation if your plans can change.
- Read the payment requirements. Some locations require a credit card, impose larger debit-card deposits, or place a substantial authorization hold.
- Verify operating hours. A low rate is less useful if the counter closes before your flight arrives or the branch has no practical after-hours return process.
- Photograph the vehicle. Take timestamped photos or video of every side, the wheels, windshield, interior, fuel gauge, and odometer before leaving.
Rental-car assumptions that cause expensive problems
The pictured model is not necessarily guaranteed
Most standard reservations cover a vehicle class rather than a specific make, model, or model year. A booking showing a Toyota RAV4 may mean “or similar,” not that a RAV4 is reserved for you. Hertz states that it generally reserves classes rather than exact models, with exceptions for certain premium or member programs.
Reserve for your practical needs: number of seats, luggage space, transmission, fuel type, and drivetrain. If a specific model is essential, ask whether the company offers a guaranteed-model category and get the terms in writing.

The airport daily rate is not the complete price
Airport rentals commonly include concession-recovery charges, facility fees, and other location-specific surcharges. A neighborhood branch may have a lower total, but taxi, rideshare, or public-transit costs can cancel the saving. Compare both locations from door to door.
Unlisted drivers may not be covered
Additional drivers generally must be added to the agreement and satisfy the company’s age and license requirements. Enterprise’s standard U.S. additional-driver charge is $15 per day, although spouses or domestic partners, New York rentals, corporate contracts, and other exceptions can change the amount.

Do not let a friend or partner drive simply because they have a valid license. An unlisted driver can breach the rental agreement and create serious coverage problems after a collision.
The minimum age is not always 25
Enterprise’s standard U.S. minimum age is 21, dropping to 18 in Michigan and New York. Renters aged 21 to 24 commonly pay a young-renter fee—Enterprise says it averages about $25 per day—and may face restrictions on vehicle classes. Other companies and locations use different rules, so check the actual branch rather than relying on a general age assumption.
The person paying cannot always be absent
At pickup, the primary renter normally needs to be present with the required license and payment card. Enterprise says the renter must sign the agreement and provide their own credit or debit card. If somebody else is paying, arrange an approved payment or renter structure in advance; do not assume the counter can fix it on arrival.

Satisfaction was also higher: 704 versus 662 out of 1,000. Still, 80% of airport renters used the counter.

FAQ
Which car rental company is best overall?
National is the strongest overall choice for frequent renters who value fast airport pickup and choosing from available cars. Enterprise is a better general-purpose option when local availability and conventional customer service matter more.
Is Budget always the cheapest car rental company?
No. Budget often has a low base rate, but airport fees, taxes, young-renter charges, additional-driver fees, fuel, insurance products, and one-way charges can change the final ranking. Compare the complete checkout total.
Are rental cars reserved by exact make and model?
Usually not. Standard reservations normally cover a vehicle class, such as midsize SUV or economy car. If a particular model is essential, look for a guaranteed-model category and confirm its conditions.
What should I check before picking up a rental car?
Confirm the renter’s age and payment requirements, add every driver to the agreement, verify branch hours and after-hours procedures, check the cancellation terms, and photograph the vehicle’s exterior, wheels, glass, interior, fuel level, and odometer before driving away.
The Bottom Line
For the quickest frequent-renter experience, start with National. Choose Enterprise for broad everyday availability and strong recent satisfaction results, Alamo for family vacations, Budget when its complete price is lowest, and Sixt when premium vehicle selection is worth paying for. For international travel, compare Avis and Hertz alongside the other brands.
The winning reservation is not the one with the lowest advertised daily rate. It is the one that provides the right vehicle class at a workable location, with acceptable fees, payment rules, hours, cancellation terms, and a realistic total price.
