Smart says its forthcoming all-electric smart #2 will use a new Tridion Cell Evo safety cell and a structurally refined platform. Those are preliminary manufacturer claims, not proof that the car is safer than rivals: EU homologation is still underway, and no independent crash-test rating or comparative result has been published in the cited sources.
What smart says about the #2’s structure
In a safety announcement dated September 28, 2026, smart described the Tridion Cell Evo as the next generation of its safety cell. The company says it has also refined chassis rigidity and structural stress points, aiming to combine the #2’s compact exterior dimensions with a robust structure. These descriptions come from the manufacturer; the announcement provides no measurements, test methods or independent validation.

Smart also says the refinements are intended to support steering precision, manoeuvrability, rear grip and stability. Those are claims about the vehicle’s intended setup, not published results from a standardized safety assessment.

Smart describes the #2 as an ultra-compact, all-electric two-seater based on its Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). A December 15, 2025 development update said the car retains a two-door, two-seat layout and rear-wheel-drive dynamics. The same update reported that development locations were validating crash-safety performance alongside suspension durability, battery performance, software and climate-control systems. It establishes that safety validation was underway at that time; it does not establish a completed independent crash test or a score.

Tilo Schweers, smart Europe’s Vice President of Research & Development, described the effort this way: “With the smart #2, our R&D team has focused on validating the Tridion Cell Evo and the ECA platform under real-world conditions, from city driving to extended testing on European roads and highways.This work ensures the vehicle’s structure and setup for safety and agility are tuned specifically to European standards and driving conditions ahead of its market launch.” This is an executive’s account of the development program, not an independent assessment of crash performance.
Why “unmatched safety” is not established
The cited official announcements contain no independent smart #2 crash-test rating, safety statistic or head-to-head comparison with other city cars. A manufacturer’s description of a structure cannot be treated as equivalent to a rating earned under a published test protocol, so the word “unmatched” remains an aspiration rather than a verified ranking.

A meaningful comparison would require results for the smart #2 and competing models tested under the same protocol and for comparable model years. It should examine adult-occupant protection, child-occupant protection, vulnerable-road-user protection and safety-assist systems separately. No such comparable set of results is supplied in the cited material.
What is still preliminary, and what comes next
Smart said on September 28, 2026, that the #2 was undergoing EU homologation. The company cautioned that the announced details were preliminary and could change, with official figures to follow completion of homologation. They should not be read as final production specifications.

That release scheduled the world premiere for October 12, 2026, at the Paris Motor Show. The premiere date is a plan announced by smart, not evidence that homologation or independent safety testing has been completed.

What prospective buyers can conclude now
- There is a concrete design claim: smart says the #2 will use Tridion Cell Evo and that structural areas have been refined.
- Development validation was reported: smart said crash-safety performance was being validated in its December 2025 update.
- There is not yet a published independent verdict in these sources: no score or like-for-like competitor result supports a claim of unmatched safety.
