Use the free NHTSA recall lookup to check a U.S. vehicle for unrepaired safety recalls. Enter its 17-character VIN or, where the lookup offers it, its license plate. A result showing zero means no unrepaired recall is associated with that VIN within the lookup’s scope—not that the vehicle has never been recalled.
How to check a vehicle for recalls by VIN

Open the NHTSA recall lookup.

Enter the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, or use the license-plate search if it is available in the lookup.

Review the result for unrepaired safety recalls associated with that specific vehicle. NHTSA says a vehicle with no open recalls displays: “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN.”

If you have a specific concern but the lookup does not show a relevant result, check the vehicle manufacturer’s recall page as well. Manufacturer-provided information may not yet be posted on NHTSA’s site.

If an unrepaired recall appears, read the campaign details and contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to confirm the remedy and next steps. The appropriate action depends on the campaign.
Where to find your VIN
A VIN is a 17-character vehicle identification number. You can usually find it at the lower left of the windshield, and it is printed on the vehicle registration card. It may also appear on the insurance card. If you are unsure which number to enter, compare the number on the vehicle with the registration card.

What a VIN search does—and does not—show
The VIN lookup is for unrepaired safety recalls associated with a particular vehicle. NHTSA describes its VIN lookup as covering unrepaired recalls from the last 15 years. A result that says “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN” therefore does not establish that the vehicle has never had a recall; it means the lookup found no unrepaired recall associated with that VIN within its stated scope.

A search by year, make, and model serves a different purpose: it can show broader recall information, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. It is not the same as a VIN-specific result for open recalls. NHTSA’s wider vehicle and equipment recall information archive reaches back to 1966, but that broader archive should not be confused with the VIN lookup’s 15-year unrepaired-recall scope.

The lookup depends on information supplied by manufacturers. NHTSA notes that manufacturer information may not yet be posted on its site, so a result is not a guarantee that every newly filed campaign is already visible. If you are checking because of a specific concern, also consult the automaker.

Follow the directions for that campaign. Do not assume the remedy or urgency is the same for every recall; use the actual notice and the manufacturer’s guidance.

Which recall search should you use?

For a vehicle and equipment recall archive reaching back to 1966, see Recalls.gov’s motor vehicle recalls information. That archive has a wider historical scope than the NHTSA VIN lookup’s stated period for unrepaired recalls.
