Costco’s reported limit is two boxes of Kirkland Signature motor oil per member per week, as the price of a two-pack of five-quart bottles rose to about $58 from about $30 the previous year, according to the Associated Press on September 14, 2026. A Group III base-oil supply squeeze is one proposed explanation for broader market pressure, but the available reporting does not establish that it alone caused Costco’s price increase or purchase limit.
What Costco’s reported price and purchase limits are
The Associated Press reported on September 14, 2026, that Kirkland Signature full synthetic motor oil cost about $58 for a two-pack of five-quart bottles, compared with about $30 the prior year. AP also reported a limit of two Kirkland boxes per week and a five-pack cap for Mobil 1’s one-quart six-pack. Costco did not immediately respond to AP’s request for comment. These are terms reported at that time, not confirmation of a permanent or universally applied rule.

Costco’s product pages list Kirkland full synthetic oil in multiple grades, including a 5W-30 two-pack. An indexed Costco comparison page showed a price of $57.99 when accessed October 9, 2026, and cautioned that local prices and warehouse availability may vary. Check your local listing or warehouse for current price, stock, and any purchase limit.
What a Group III shortage means—and what it does not prove
Group III is a category of base oil used in blending engine oils under the American Petroleum Institute’s engine-oil licensing framework. It is an upstream ingredient, not a viscosity grade such as 5W-30. A finished oil combines base stocks with an additive package, and the phrase “full synthetic” does not guarantee one specific base-stock recipe.

A constrained supply of a base-oil category can raise costs for lubricant blenders and affect product availability. A May 2026 analysis published by ReGen III, a company involved in Group III re-refining, describes disruption to Gulf-region production and shipping and argues that North America is exposed because of its reliance on imported Group III oil. That is an industry analysis, not an independent government finding.
- ReGen III estimated that North America imports 70–80% of its Group III base oil.
- The company’s analysis said roughly 40,500 barrels per day of Gulf-region Group III capacity had been removed from supply.
- It also attributed estimates and expectations to ICIS, Argus, and Kline. Those underlying market datasets are not separately available here, so their figures and forecasts should be understood as secondhand claims in ReGen III’s report, not independently confirmed current conditions.
AP’s reporting establishes the consumer-facing Costco price and purchase-limit claims. It does not establish that a Group III shortage alone caused Costco’s decision. The specific connection between that event and upstream supply pressure remains an attributed explanation, not a confirmed statement of Costco’s rationale. The available sources also do not establish when supply conditions will normalize.

How to choose oil if Costco’s product is unavailable
Start with the vehicle, not the price or the label on a substitute. The American Petroleum Institute’s Motor Oil Guide says: “Vehicle owners should refer to their owner’s manuals before consulting these charts.” Use the manual to identify the required SAE viscosity and the applicable API performance category and any specified original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) approval.
- Check the owner’s manual. Find the required viscosity and performance specifications for your vehicle and engine.
- Compare the exact requirements. Confirm that an alternative oil’s label lists the required API category and any required OEM approval. Do not assume another viscosity is suitable because it is also sold as full synthetic.
- Check the quantity and total cost. Compare package size with the capacity your vehicle needs, then calculate the current price per quart.
- Check local stock and limits. Prices, availability, and purchase rules can vary by location and over time.
Costco’s multiple grades are not interchangeable for every vehicle. There is no sourced head-to-head performance test here that supports ranking Kirkland against Mobil 1 or another brand for engine protection; choose by the vehicle’s stated requirements.

Should you stock up or delay an oil change?
A reported purchase cap is not a reason to buy more oil than you need or to delay maintenance. Follow the oil-change interval and oil specification in your owner’s manual, and choose an available product that meets those requirements. If you cannot confirm a substitute’s fit, check the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance or ask a qualified service professional before using it.
