Finding a fresh scratch on your car is frustrating, but the next step is not automatically filing an insurance claim or reaching for a scratch pen. First, document the damage and preserve any evidence. Then determine whether it looks like vandalism, a parking-lot collision, or an older surface defect. Your coverage, deductible, and the depth of the scratch will determine whether the best next move is a police report, an insurance claim, a small DIY repair, or a body-shop estimate.

1. Stay safe and do not confront anyone
If the person who scratched your car is still nearby, do not confront them or block their vehicle. Move to a safe location, especially if you are in moving traffic, a poorly lit parking lot, or a situation that feels threatening.
Call 911 if there is an immediate danger, an injury, a threat, or another emergency. For non-emergency property damage, contact the local law-enforcement agency that serves the location where the damage occurred. Many agencies have a non-emergency telephone line or online reporting system. The correct reporting process—and whether an officer will come to the scene—varies by jurisdiction.

2. Photograph the car and scene before cleaning it
Do not wash, polish, sand, touch up, or otherwise alter the scratch until you have documented it. Evidence can disappear when paint transfer is cleaned away or damaged parts are moved.
Take photographs in good light, including:
- Close-ups of every scratch, scuff, dent, chip, or broken part.
- Several wider photographs showing the entire panel and the vehicle’s position.
- Paint transfer, debris, broken plastic, or fragments on the ground.
- Nearby vehicles that may have matching damage or paint transfer.
- Parking-space lines, signs, curbs, barriers, driveways, and the surrounding area.
- Any note left on the windshield or attached to the vehicle.
Record when and where you discovered the damage. If you do not know when it happened, note the last time you saw the car undamaged and the place or places where it was parked.
Check for cameras and witnesses
If the car was parked at an apartment complex, business, garage, event venue, or shopping center, ask the property manager, security desk, or business staff whether cameras may have captured the incident. Note the camera’s location, the name of the person you spoke with, and any procedure for requesting or preserving footage. Security footage may be overwritten quickly, so ask whether it can be preserved while a report or insurance claim is considered.
Ask witnesses for their names and contact information. Do not pressure anyone to guess what happened; simply record what they actually saw. Keep original photographs and videos in more than one location, and avoid editing the originals.
3. Decide whether the damage looks deliberate, collision-related, or old
The likely cause affects both the report you make and the insurance coverage that may apply. A scratch alone does not establish how it happened, so describe the physical evidence rather than asserting a cause you cannot prove.
| What may have happened | Typical examples | Coverage category that may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Vandalism | A deliberate key mark, slash, or other intentional paint damage | Usually comprehensive, subject to the policy and deductible |
| Collision or parked-car impact | A door ding, bumper scrape, dent, or paint transfer caused by another vehicle | Collision coverage, the other driver’s property-damage liability coverage, or sometimes uninsured-motorist property-damage coverage |
| Ordinary wear or pre-existing damage | Fading, oxidation, wash marks, old scratches, or unrelated defects | Often not an insured sudden loss |
Comprehensive insurance generally covers non-collision events such as vandalism. Collision insurance generally covers damage from hitting another vehicle or object, including many parked-car impacts. The exact result depends on your policy, exclusions, the facts, and state law.
4. If another driver is present, exchange information
If the suspected driver is still there and the situation is safe, collect:
- The driver’s name and contact information.
- Insurance company and policy information.
- Driver’s-license details where lawful and appropriate.
- License-plate number, vehicle make, model, color, and visible damage.
- Photographs of both vehicles, the damage, and the location.
Do not sign a statement admitting fault, agree that the damage is minor, or accept a cash payment before the damage is properly assessed. A scratch can conceal a dent, damaged clips, a misaligned panel, or paint-system damage that is more expensive than it first appears. Keep the conversation factual and let the insurers or authorities handle disputed responsibility.
If the driver left
Treat the incident as a possible hit-and-run. Photograph the scene, preserve paint transfer and debris, ask about cameras and witnesses, and report the incident to the appropriate local law-enforcement agency. Request the report or incident number and keep it with your insurance records.

A hit-and-run may be handled under collision coverage or, in some states and policies, uninsured-motorist property-damage coverage. Neither coverage is universal. Uninsured-motorist property-damage rules, deductibles, documentation requirements, and whether coverage applies to an unidentified driver vary substantially by state and policy.
5. Contact your insurer before repairing the damage
If you may use insurance, notify your insurer before washing, repairing, or repainting the affected area. Ask what evidence it needs, whether an inspection is required, where an estimate can be obtained, and whether your policy has a reporting deadline. A prompt notice is sensible even when you are still deciding whether to file a formal claim, but ask how the insurer will record the inquiry.

- Comprehensive coverage: commonly relevant to deliberate vandalism and other non-collision losses.
- Collision coverage: commonly relevant to an impact with another vehicle or object, including many parked-car incidents.
- Uninsured-motorist property-damage coverage: potentially relevant to an uninsured or unidentified driver in some states.
- Deductibles: the amount you generally pay before covered benefits contribute.
- Policy conditions: notice requirements, appraisal procedures, exclusions, and any lender or lease requirements.
Your own property-damage liability coverage generally pays for damage you cause to someone else’s property; it usually does not repair your own vehicle. If the responsible driver is identified, that driver’s property-damage liability insurance may be the appropriate source of payment, subject to fault, limits, cooperation, and local law.
6. Compare the estimate with your deductible
Obtain a realistic repair estimate before deciding whether to make a claim for a small scratch. If the repair cost is below your applicable deductible, your policy will generally not provide a payment. If the estimate is only slightly above the deductible, the claim’s financial benefit may be small.
Also consider:
- Whether the scratch catches a fingernail or exposes primer or metal.
- Whether there is hidden denting, a cracked bumper, broken mounting hardware, or panel misalignment.
- Whether exposed metal could begin to corrode.
- The age, condition, and value of the vehicle.
- Whether the car is financed or leased and must meet physical-damage requirements.
- Whether the other driver can be identified and held responsible.
- How your insurer and state treat reported claims and not-at-fault losses.
Do not assume that a not-at-fault claim can never affect future premiums. Rate treatment differs by insurer, state, claim history, and the type of loss. Ask the insurer what opening a claim or reporting an incident may mean before authorizing repairs.
7. Decide whether a DIY repair is appropriate
A DIY product is reasonable only when the defect is a minor surface-level mark. Start by cleaning the area gently according to the product’s instructions and inspecting it in strong light. Do not use a product simply because the damage is called a “scratch.” Depth and paint finish matter more than the label.

When a scratch-removal kit may help
If the mark is a light scuff or paint transfer that does not catch your fingernail and appears limited to the clear coat, a reputable car scratch repair kit or clear-coat scratch-removal compound may reduce its appearance. Follow the label exactly, use only compatible materials, and test in an inconspicuous area if the instructions permit.
Products such as 3M’s Scratch Removal System are intended for minor scratches and scuffs in the clear coat; damage deeper than the clear coat may require repainting. Meguiar’s ScratchX is described for light scratches, scuffs, and paint transfer on glossy finishes. A product made for a glossy finish should not be assumed safe for a matte or satin finish.
A clean microfiber detailing cloth may be useful for the preparation and wipe-off steps when the product instructions call for one. Use a clean cloth appropriate for automotive paint and avoid pressing grit into the panel.
When not to use a scratch pen or polish
Do not expect a polish or clear filler to repair a scratch that:

- Extends across multiple panels or has uncertain boundaries.
- Appears on a matte or satin finish without confirmed product compatibility.
Scratch-repair pens are especially limited when the damage goes below the clear coat. Overapplication can leave a visible ridge or residue and make the repair more noticeable. If bare metal is exposed, delaying an appropriate repair can increase the risk of corrosion.

Use a reputable local body shop or automotive paint-repair professional when the scratch penetrates the clear coat, exposes the substrate, includes a dent, or requires color matching. Ask for a written estimate that identifies preparation, paint blending, panel repair, parts, and any likely hidden damage.

Compare the estimate with your deductible and the vehicle’s value, but do not choose a repair solely because it is the cheapest quote. Ask whether the shop expects to polish, touch up, refinish the panel, blend adjacent panels, or replace damaged components.
Paintless dent repair can be appropriate for some dents when the paint is intact and the panel can be accessed. It is not a universal solution for scratches, gouges, peeling paint, or exposed metal. For deeper damage, compare repair estimates from reputable local body shops before authorizing work.

What to do today: a practical checklist
- Move away from traffic or anyone acting aggressively.
- Photograph the car, scratch, paint transfer, debris, nearby vehicles, and scene.
- Record the location, discovery time, witnesses, cameras, and any note left behind.
- Do not wash, polish, sand, or repair the area yet.
- Determine whether the evidence suggests vandalism, a collision, a hit-and-run, or old wear.
- Exchange information if the other driver is present and it is safe.
- Report a suspected hit-and-run or deliberate damage through the appropriate local process.
- Review comprehensive, collision, uninsured-motorist property-damage coverage, and deductibles.
- Notify the insurer before repairs if a claim may be involved.
- Get an estimate and choose between a claim, out-of-pocket repair, a suitable clear-coat product, or professional repair.
Bottom line
Preserve evidence before attempting a fix. A deliberate mark is generally a comprehensive-coverage question, while a parking-lot impact is generally a collision or at-fault-driver question; a hit-and-run may involve collision or state-dependent uninsured-motorist property-damage coverage. Once you know the likely cause, compare a proper repair estimate with your deductible. Only consider a DIY kit for a shallow clear-coat scuff, and use a professional repairer for deep scratches, exposed metal, dents, damaged bumpers, or uncertain damage.
This is general U.S. consumer information, not legal, insurance-adjuster, or repair advice. Police-report procedures, coverage, deductibles, deadlines, and premium treatment vary by state, insurer, and policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do immediately after someone scratches my car?
Photograph the scratch and the surrounding scene before cleaning or repairing the vehicle. Look for paint transfer, debris, nearby cameras, witnesses, and notes. If the driver is present and it is safe, exchange information. If the driver left, report a possible hit-and-run to the appropriate local agency and contact your insurer if coverage may apply.
Is a scratched car covered by comprehensive or collision insurance?
Deliberate keying or intentional paint damage is generally treated as vandalism and may fall under comprehensive coverage. A door ding, scrape, or paint transfer caused by another vehicle is generally collision-related. The actual classification and coverage depend on the evidence, policy, and state law.
Should I use a car scratch repair kit?
Only consider one for a shallow clear-coat scuff or paint transfer that does not catch your fingernail. A scratch showing primer, bare metal, or another paint layer—or one accompanied by a dent—usually needs more than polish or a pen.
Should I file an insurance claim for a small scratch?
Compare a realistic repair estimate with the applicable deductible. If the estimate is below the deductible, the policy generally will not pay a benefit. If it is only slightly higher, the financial advantage may be small. Also ask your insurer how reporting or filing a claim may affect your situation.
When should a scratched car go to a body shop?
Yes. A professional body shop or automotive paint-repair specialist is the safer choice for scratches that catch a fingernail, expose primer or metal, include dents or cracked parts, affect multiple panels, or involve a matte or satin finish without confirmed product compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Document first, avoid confrontation, identify whether the damage is vandalism or a collision, and contact your insurer before repairs if a claim is possible. Use a DIY scratch remover only for a shallow clear-coat mark that does not catch a fingernail. Deep scratches, exposed metal, dents, cracked bumpers, and uncertain damage deserve a professional estimate.
