Kia Warranty Explained: What the U.S. Warranty Covers—and What It Doesn’t

Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile warranty mainly covers specified powertrain components for eligible owners—not the entire vehicle. Here’s what the U.S. basic, powertrain, EV, corrosion, roadside, and maintenance provisions cover, plus common exclusions and claim tips.

No—Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile warranty does not cover the entire vehicle for ten years. In the U.S., that headline figure primarily applies to specified powertrain components for eligible original purchasers and Kia Certified Pre-Owned buyers. Kia’s broader New Vehicle Limited Warranty generally lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles, while EV, corrosion, roadside-assistance, and trip-interruption benefits have separate rules.

Use this as a guide to Kia’s current U.S. warranty structure, but check the warranty manual for the exact model year and confirm coverage by VIN, date of first service, mileage, and owner status.

The six separate parts of Kia’s U.S. warranty

Kia’s warranty is a collection of limited warranties, not one blanket promise. The familiar 10-year/100,000-mile figure applies mainly to specified powertrain components for eligible owners. It does not mean that every part of the vehicle is covered for ten years.

All time and mileage limits below generally run from the vehicle’s date of first service, and whichever limit comes first controls. The exact terms can vary by model year, vehicle type, and owner status, so the vehicle-specific Warranty and Consumer Information Manual is the controlling document.

Coverage Headline term What it generally covers
New Vehicle Limited Warranty 5 years or 60,000 miles Most vehicle components that fail because of defects in materials or workmanship, subject to exclusions.
Powertrain Limited Warranty Up to 10 years or 100,000 miles Specified engine, transmission or transaxle, axle, differential, and propeller-shaft components for eligible owners.
Anti-perforation warranty 5 years or 100,000 miles Qualifying body corrosion that perforates the metal from the inside out because of a manufacturing defect.
Roadside assistance 5 years or 60,000 miles Limited roadside services for eligible new vehicles, subject to the program’s conditions.
Trip interruption Limited benefit Potential reimbursement after a qualifying warranty-related disablement far from home when repairs exceed the required time threshold.
EV System Warranty 10 years or 100,000 miles Specified EV components, including the electric motor, high-voltage battery, electric power control unit, and onboard charger, on applicable vehicles.

1. New Vehicle Limited Warranty: the broadest coverage

Kia describes its basic or New Vehicle Limited Warranty as covering most vehicle components and systems for 60 months or 60,000 miles from the date of first service, whichever comes first. The covered failure generally must result from a defect in workmanship or materials.

This is the coverage that most closely resembles what people informally call a bumper-to-bumper warranty. That phrase can be misleading, however. Kia’s warranty is still limited. It does not cover scheduled maintenance, every consumable item, ordinary wear, or damage caused by an outside event. Components and situations excluded by the applicable model-year manual remain outside the warranty even if the vehicle is within five years and 60,000 miles.

For example, a defective electrical module or a mechanical component that fails because of a manufacturing defect may fall under the basic warranty. A set of worn brake pads, an overdue oil change, or collision damage generally will not.

2. Powertrain Limited Warranty: longer, but narrower

The powertrain warranty is the source of Kia’s widely advertised 10-year/100,000-mile figure. It applies to specified powertrain components, not to every part involved in making the vehicle move.

Kia identifies essential components such as the engine, transmission or transaxle, axle, differential, and propeller shaft. Depending on the vehicle and the component, coverage can include certain internal parts, seals, gaskets, and assemblies. The manual’s component list matters: a failure must involve a covered part and a covered cause.

Who receives the full long-term powertrain term?

Kia’s current U.S. warranty information identifies the extended powertrain coverage as applying to the original purchaser and to the purchaser of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, subject to the program terms. A buyer of an ordinary used Kia should not assume that the full 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain term automatically transfers.

That owner-status distinction is one of the most important details in the entire warranty. A vehicle may still be within the advertised age and mileage limits while the current owner is not eligible for the same long-term coverage. Confirm the VIN, first-service date, mileage, and ownership or CPO status with a Kia dealer before relying on the 10-year figure.

The practical way to explain the difference is this: the basic warranty is broader but expires sooner, while the long powertrain warranty lasts longer but covers fewer components and is sensitive to owner status.

3. Anti-perforation warranty: what it protects against

Kia lists a 5-year/100,000-mile limited anti-perforation warranty. It is intended for qualifying rust or corrosion that perforates the body metal from the inside out because of a factory defect.

Anti-perforation coverage is not a general promise to repair any rust or paint problem. Surface rust, stone chips, scratches, environmental corrosion, damage connected to an accident, and problems with an improper or unrepaired body repair may be treated differently. The precise definition of covered panels and the applicable exclusions are in the vehicle’s warranty manual.

If corrosion is the issue, photograph the affected area before repair, document when it appeared, and have a Kia dealer inspect it. Do not assume that a visible rust spot automatically meets the meaning of perforation.

4. Roadside assistance and trip interruption

Roadside assistance

Kia lists roadside assistance for eligible new vehicles for 5 years or 60,000 miles. The services described by Kia include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • towing for a warranty-related disablement;
  • out-of-fuel assistance;
  • flat-tire assistance;
  • battery jump-starts; and
  • lockout assistance.

This is a limited warranty-related benefit, not unlimited towing and not a substitute for roadside insurance. Conditions, service limits, eligible situations, and authorization requirements apply. Before arranging an expensive tow, ask whether the event qualifies and whether Kia’s assistance provider must be contacted first. If the vehicle is unsafe to drive, prioritize safety and preserve the tow and repair documentation.

Trip interruption

Kia also describes a trip-interruption benefit for certain warranty-related disablements. Under the terms described on its current U.S. warranty page, the disablement must occur more than 150 miles from home, and repairs must require more than 24 hours. If the claim qualifies, reasonable reimbursement may be available for meals, lodging, or a rental vehicle.

The referenced new-vehicle coverage lists a limit of $100 per day for up to three days, subject to restrictions and per-incident requirements. Keep receipts and ask the dealer or assistance provider what must be approved before spending money. The existence of the benefit does not mean every travel expense will be reimbursed.

5. EV system and high-voltage battery coverage

For applicable Kia electric vehicles, the current U.S. warranty overview separately describes an EV System Warranty lasting 10 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first service, whichever comes first. The listed EV components include:

  • the electric motor;
  • the high-voltage battery;
  • the electric power control unit; and
  • the onboard charger.

Kia also states that high-voltage battery capacity coverage applies when the battery falls below 70% of its original capacity during the 10-year/100,000-mile period. Where the claim qualifies, the repair or replacement is intended to restore the battery to at least 70% capacity.

That is not a promise that every amount of battery degradation triggers a replacement. It is also different from a claim that an EV component failed because of a defect. The measured capacity, testing process, vehicle age, mileage, and model-year terms all matter.

Do not automatically apply the EV wording to every hybrid or plug-in hybrid Kia. EV-system, battery-capacity, hybrid-system, and conventional powertrain provisions can differ. Check the exact manual for the vehicle’s model year and powertrain.

What Kia’s warranty generally does not cover

Routine maintenance and normal wear

The basic and powertrain warranties generally exclude maintenance and wear items. Common examples include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • oil and filter changes;
  • tire rotation and other scheduled service;
  • brake-pad wear;
  • wiper blades; and
  • other consumable or adjustment items identified by the maintenance schedule or warranty manual.

The list is not universal for every model year. Use the vehicle’s maintenance schedule for service intervals and the warranty manual for exclusions. A part can fail prematurely and still require a causation analysis; being within the time and mileage limits alone does not turn ordinary wear into a warranty defect.

Accidents, misuse, neglect, and outside damage

A factory-defect warranty is not collision insurance. Damage caused by an accident, abuse, misuse, neglect, improper repair, environmental event, or unauthorized modification may be excluded, depending on the facts and the manual’s wording.

Examples can include damage from a crash, flood, fire, racing, overloading, contaminated fluids, failure to follow required maintenance, or a modification that causes a related failure. Whether a particular modification or repair caused the problem is a fact-specific question, not something that can be determined from the vehicle’s mileage alone.

Maintenance without documentation

Having maintenance performed outside a Kia dealership does not automatically cancel the warranty. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says a manufacturer generally cannot deny coverage solely because routine maintenance or repairs were performed somewhere else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documentation still matters. A warranty administrator may ask for evidence that required maintenance was performed. Keep invoices, repair orders, parts receipts, inspection records, and towing documents. Records should show the vehicle, date, mileage, work performed, and parts or fluids used when possible.

Keep a vehicle maintenance log book. It will not create warranty coverage, but it can help organize oil-change records, tire rotations, inspections, repairs, and receipt references in one place. Keep the original invoices and repair orders too.

Aftermarket or recycled parts

The FTC’s consumer guidance says a manufacturer cannot deny warranty coverage solely because an owner used an aftermarket or recycled part. However, if Kia or a dealer can show that the part, its installation, or an improper repair caused the failure, coverage for the resulting damage may be denied.

Kia recommends Genuine Kia Parts and describes limited replacement-parts warranty treatment for qualifying parts sold by an authorized Kia dealer. That does not mean every Kia-branded part bought through an online marketplace, or every aftermarket part, automatically receives the same coverage. Keep the part invoice and installation record, and ask about the part’s own warranty before authorizing work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you have to use a Kia dealer for maintenance?

Generally, no. In the United States, routine maintenance can usually be performed by an independent shop or by the owner, provided the work is done correctly and according to the required schedule. Kia generally cannot deny a warranty claim simply because the maintenance location was not a Kia dealership.

There are important qualifications:

  • The owner remains responsible for following the maintenance schedule.
  • The owner should use the specified type and quantity of fluids, filters, and other service materials.
  • Records should establish what was done and when.
  • A dealer or manufacturer may dispute a claim if improper maintenance or an incorrect repair caused the failure.
  • When a manufacturer provides a maintenance or repair service free of charge, it may specify who performs that free service or which supplied parts are used.

This is general U.S. consumer guidance, not a decision about an individual claim. The warranty text, repair history, state law, and evidence of causation can all matter in a dispute.

What changes when you buy a used Kia?

The first question is not simply whether the Kia is under ten years old. It is whether the vehicle is still eligible for the specific warranty being claimed and whether that warranty transfers to the current owner.

Before buying or submitting a claim, verify:

  1. the VIN and exact model year;
  2. the date of first service or original in-service date;
  3. the current odometer reading;
  4. whether the vehicle was sold as Kia Certified Pre-Owned;
  5. whether the problem concerns basic, powertrain, EV, anti-perforation, roadside, or another limited warranty;
  6. whether a previous accident, modification, repair, or maintenance issue is relevant; and
  7. whether the requested work is maintenance or a wear-item replacement.

Kia’s CPO materials describe the CPO warranty program as beginning from the original in-service date. A certified vehicle may receive the remaining applicable factory warranty and roadside-assistance benefits, but the CPO program’s own terms apply. CPO status does not generally mean that all warranty clocks restart on the date of purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a non-CPO used Kia, treat the 10-year/100,000-mile statement as something to verify, not as an automatic entitlement. A dealer can check vehicle-specific information by VIN and explain which coverage remains.

How to prepare a Kia warranty claim

  1. Describe the symptom precisely. Write down when it started, whether it is intermittent, what warning lights appeared, the operating conditions, unusual noises, temperatures, and what makes the problem better or worse. Photos or video can help document an intermittent issue.
  2. Gather vehicle identity information. Have the VIN, model year, mileage, date of first service, purchase documents, and CPO paperwork if applicable.
  3. Collect maintenance and repair records. Include invoices, repair orders, inspection records, parts receipts, diagnostic reports, and towing paperwork. The FTC specifically recommends retaining maintenance records because they may be requested.
  4. Use an authorized Kia dealer for the warranty claim when practical. The dealer can apply Kia’s warranty procedures and access vehicle-specific information. That recommendation does not change the general rule that routine maintenance elsewhere does not automatically eliminate warranty rights.
  5. Clarify coverage before authorizing paid work. Ask whether diagnosis, teardown, towing, rental transportation, and replacement parts are covered. Ask whether preauthorization is required.
  6. Request a written explanation if coverage is denied. Ask for the relevant warranty provision, the component Kia says is excluded or outside the coverage term, and the technical reason the failure is not considered a covered defect.
  7. Preserve the paper trail. Keep copies of estimates, inspection findings, text messages, emails, repair orders, and names or dates associated with each conversation.
  8. Escalate with documentation. If the dealer cannot resolve the issue, contact Kia consumer assistance using the current contact information in the vehicle’s warranty materials. Provide a concise timeline and copies of the supporting records.

Do not authorize unnecessary paid repairs simply because a service adviser says a claim is probably excluded. First ask what diagnosis is needed, who pays if the claim is approved, and what happens if the claim is denied.

Factory warranty, maintenance plan, and service contract: not the same thing

Kia Maintenance Plan

The Kia Maintenance Plan is an optional service-pricing product. It is designed to lock in pricing for eligible scheduled services during the plan period. It is not the included factory warranty and should not be treated as repair-defect coverage or an automatic extension of the warranty. Review its own eligibility, services, term, cancellation, and transfer provisions.

Extended warranty or vehicle service contract

An extended warranty is often a vehicle service contract purchased separately from the factory warranty. The contract may cover selected repairs, but its administrator, covered components, exclusions, deductible, claim procedure, authorization rules, and transfer terms can differ substantially from Kia’s original warranty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying one, compare it with the factory coverage that remains. Ask:

  • Who administers the contract?
  • Which specific parts are covered?
  • What exclusions and consequential-damage rules apply?
  • Is there a deductible per visit or per repair?
  • Must repairs be approved before diagnosis or teardown?
  • Can the contract be canceled or transferred?
  • Does it duplicate coverage the vehicle already has?

Unsolicited calls, letters, and text messages claiming that a Kia warranty is about to expire are sales solicitations unless independently verified. Do not provide payment or personal information merely because a sender uses Kia’s name. Request the complete contract, independently verify the company, and compare the offer with the vehicle’s actual warranty status.

Three quick examples

A worn brake pad at 30,000 miles: Mileage alone does not make it covered. Brake-pad replacement is generally a wear item and is normally the owner’s responsibility.

An engine defect at 85,000 miles: An original purchaser may potentially have powertrain coverage if the failed part is listed and the failure resulted from a covered defect. A non-CPO secondhand owner should not assume the same 10-year/100,000-mile protection applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An EV battery measuring 68% capacity at eight years and 90,000 miles: The claim may fit Kia’s stated battery-capacity threshold for an applicable EV, but the vehicle-specific warranty, required testing, and claim procedure still control. It is not an automatic promise of a brand-new battery in every case.

What to check before relying on Kia’s warranty

  • Confirm that you are looking at the manual for the correct model year and powertrain.
  • Use the date of first service, not simply the date you bought the vehicle, when calculating time coverage.
  • Apply the time-and-mileage limit that arrives first.
  • Separate basic, powertrain, EV, corrosion, roadside, and trip-interruption coverage.
  • Verify whether the current owner is the original purchaser, a CPO buyer, or another used-vehicle owner.
  • Keep maintenance records even when service is performed by an independent shop.
  • Ask for written reasons and the relevant provision when a claim is denied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile warranty cover?

Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile warranty mainly applies to specified powertrain components, such as eligible engine, transmission or transaxle, axle, differential, and propeller-shaft parts. It is not a 10-year warranty for every vehicle component, and the full long-term term is owner-status-sensitive.

Does Kia’s 10-year warranty transfer to a used-car buyer?

Do not assume it does. Kia identifies the extended powertrain term as applying to the original purchaser and the purchaser of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, subject to the applicable terms. A non-CPO used-car buyer should verify coverage by VIN and should not rely on the headline figure alone.

Do I have to service my Kia at a dealership to keep the warranty?

Generally, no. In the United States, routine maintenance performed by an independent shop does not automatically cancel factory warranty coverage. Keep detailed invoices and records, follow Kia’s maintenance schedule, and recognize that a claim can still be disputed if improper maintenance or repair caused the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Kia’s warranty cover brakes and routine maintenance?

Brake pads, oil changes, filters, tire rotations, wiper blades, and similar scheduled or consumable items are generally maintenance or wear items rather than warranty defects. The exact exclusions depend on the vehicle’s model-year warranty manual.

When does Kia’s EV battery capacity warranty apply?

For applicable Kia EVs, Kia states that high-voltage battery capacity coverage applies when capacity falls below 70% of its original capacity during the 10-year/100,000-mile period. Required testing and the vehicle-specific warranty terms still determine whether a claim qualifies.

The Bottom Line

Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile promise is not an all-vehicle warranty. It primarily covers specified powertrain components for eligible original purchasers and Kia Certified Pre-Owned buyers, while the broader basic warranty generally lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles. EV, corrosion, roadside, and trip-interruption benefits have separate terms.

For a real claim, the vehicle-specific warranty manual and VIN-based confirmation matter more than a general advertisement. Check the first-service date, mileage, owner status, maintenance records, failed component, and cause of failure before assuming a repair is covered.
