Waymo Expands Across the Bay Area: Where You Can Ride in 2026

Waymo’s Bay Area network now reaches more San Jose and Campbell destinations, but a city listing does not guarantee every address is serviceable. Check both trip endpoints and the live app map.

Yes. Waymo has expanded its Bay Area service farther into San Jose and Campbell, building on coverage across San Francisco, the Peninsula and Silicon Valley. But this is a staged regional expansion, not a promise of service at every address in every listed city. For a specific trip, the Waymo app’s live pickup and destination check is the practical test.

What changed in Waymo’s Bay Area service?

On May 20, 2026, Waymo announced more destinations in San Jose and Campbell. The update extends its existing Bay Area network rather than establishing that either city is covered end to end. Waymo’s announcement is at Waymo’s Bay Area expansion update.

It helps to separate four milestones that can happen at different times: regulatory permission to operate, vehicle testing or deployment, an announced service area, and access for ordinary riders. A city name in a regulation or announcement does not by itself mean you can book a ride there.

Where Waymo’s Bay Area coverage has been announced

San Francisco and the northern Peninsula

Earlier expansions extended service beyond San Francisco into communities including Daly City, Broadmoor, Colma, Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae and Burlingame. The precise rider boundary can change, so use the app rather than treating this list as a street-by-street coverage map. Waymo described earlier destination expansion in its August 2024 announcement and Peninsula coverage update.

Silicon Valley and the central Peninsula

Waymo’s announced Silicon Valley service area includes Mountain View, Los Altos, Palo Alto and parts of Sunnyvale. Expanded Peninsula coverage has also included Menlo Park. Access in newly opened areas has been added gradually, so a city’s inclusion does not guarantee immediate access for every rider or address. See Waymo’s Silicon Valley service information and its Peninsula update.

San Jose and Campbell

The May 2026 update confirms more destinations in both San Jose and Campbell, but it does not establish that every neighborhood or address is eligible. San José Mineta International Airport described the initial service area as focused primarily on central San Jose, with downtown and additional parts of the city intended to follow over time. Its announcement names destinations including Santana Row, Westfield Valley Fair, Rosemary Gardens, Newhall, College Park and Cory. Check the exact endpoints in the app; neighborhood and landmark names are not a guarantee that a particular curb is served. See the airport’s Waymo service announcement.

East Bay: approved territory is not the same as rider service

California’s DMV approved-area documentation lists a much broader set of Bay Area cities, including Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Albany, Emeryville, Piedmont, Hayward, Fremont, Newark, Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore. That is regulatory operating territory for driverless testing and deployment; it is not evidence that public riders can currently book trips throughout those cities. Use the DMV’s Waymo approved-area page for the regulatory distinction, and Waymo’s app for ride eligibility.

How to check whether your trip is bookable

  1. Open or install the official Waymo rider service and sign in as requested.

  2. Enter the exact pickup point and destination. A trip generally needs both ends inside the active rider area.

  3. Review whether the app offers a ride, along with its pickup point, estimated arrival, route and quoted fare. If access is being rolled out gradually, follow any notification or waitlist option the app presents.

  4. Confirm only after checking the proposed pickup location and price. Follow the in-app directions to meet the vehicle, then verify the vehicle and follow its instructions.

  5. If the pickup is inaccessible, the vehicle cannot reach the destination, or the trip encounters a problem, contact Rider Support through the app.

Waymo says riders see the trip cost before booking; adding a stop or changing the destination can produce a new price. See Waymo’s fare information. Eligibility, route and pickup instructions may be affected by road restrictions, construction, events, or restricted-access locations.

Airport trips need a separate check

Airport authorization and airport pickup procedures are distinct from ordinary street service. The CPUC says autonomous passenger service at airports requires express authorization from the airport authority. Its current authorization list includes San Francisco International Airport, San José Mineta International Airport, Palo Alto Airport, San Carlos Airport and Santa Monica Airport. That list does not specify the pickup point for an individual ride. Check Waymo’s current app instructions before traveling to an airport; a ride may use a designated zone rather than any terminal curb. See the CPUC airport authorization information. For SFO, the CPUC also published a notice concerning Waymo operations and an airport ground-transportation permit; use the app for live passenger pickup directions.

Can you ride from San Francisco to San Jose?

Waymo has described a connected Bay Area service area extending down to San Jose, and it has been expanding freeway access. The company’s 2025 year-in-review said Bay Area riders could already experience freeway travel and that additional freeway access would be expanded. This does not establish that every San Francisco–San Jose trip is bookable. The exact origin and destination must be eligible, and availability depends on the live service map, route conditions and vehicle availability. Check the requested trip in the app rather than inferring availability from a regional map.

Compare the actual trip, not a general price claim

There is no dependable blanket answer to whether Waymo costs less than Uber or Lyft. Fares and availability can vary with route, timing, demand and fees. For a fair comparison, request quotes for the same endpoints and departure time, and account for airport charges, tolls, pickup distance, wait time, luggage and cancellation terms. Also compare transit options through 511.org if a longer trip does not need to be door to door.

  • Waymo: check the live service boundary, quoted fare and pickup instructions in the Waymo app or rider service.

  • Uber: compare a same-time quote on its rider page.

  • Lyft: compare a same-time quote on its rider page.

  • Transit: check route, transfers and schedules through 511.
