Classic pony cars besides the Ford Mustang include the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Plymouth Barracuda, Mercury Cougar, AMC Javelin and Dodge Challenger. This is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking: museums identify a wider field, and the exact boundary of “pony car” is not fixed. The AACA Museum describes 1964–1975 as the classic pony-car era, while the Wisconsin Historical Museum connects the category with Trans-Am’s early years.
What makes a car a pony car?
The term describes a class that took shape around the Mustang’s 1964 arrival, but it does not have one universally agreed boundary. Ford dates the Mustang’s introduction to April 17, 1964, and reports that its median purchaser age was 31, with more than 28% of buyers younger than 25. Those are Ford-published figures about Mustang customers, not statistics for all pony-car buyers or the rival models.

The AACA Museum uses 1964–1975 as the classic era and includes all six cars below in its examples. A separate historical lens comes from Trans-Am: the Wisconsin Historical Museum places the series’ 1966 origins in a field that included the Mustang, Barracuda, Camaro, Firebird and Javelin. That context links several of these names to the period’s competition culture, but it does not mean each car had the same racing record.

Chevrolet Camaro
General Motors describes the 1967 Camaro as Chevrolet’s entry into the pony-car mix. GM’s heritage account of its 1967 Camaro pace car notes that an L78 big-block engine rated at 375 hp was available. That figure belongs to the pace-car description; it should not be read as the output of every Camaro or as a comparison with the other cars here.

Pontiac Firebird
The Firebird shares the Camaro’s place in the category’s late-1960s field. Both the Wisconsin Historical Museum and the AACA Museum include it among the era’s pony cars, making it a natural companion in a survey of alternatives to the Mustang.
Plymouth Barracuda
The Barracuda appears in both the Wisconsin Historical Museum’s account of Trans-Am’s early context and the AACA Museum’s classic-era examples. Its inclusion shows that the field was not limited to Ford and General Motors entries.

Mercury Cougar
The AACA Museum includes the Cougar among classic pony cars. That makes it a useful addition to the list beyond the most commonly cited Camaro and Chrysler examples; the available evidence here does not establish a more specific positioning or a model-by-model comparison.
AMC Javelin
The Javelin is another name shared by the Wisconsin Historical Museum’s early Trans-Am-era grouping and the AACA Museum’s classic-period list. Its presence is a reminder that the pony-car conversation extended beyond the largest domestic automakers.

The sources establish a useful category-level picture rather than a complete specification guide. They identify the period and examples, provide one attributed Camaro power figure, and connect a subset of the cars to Trans-Am’s early context. They do not establish a consistent comparison of launch dates, engine choices, production totals, prices or competition results across all six. So this list is best read as a map of notable alternatives, not a ranking by speed, rarity, value or sales.
