Uber’s partnership with Avride is now more than a future plan. Announced in October 2024, the multiyear agreement covers Avride sidewalk delivery robots on Uber Eats and Avride autonomous cars booked through the Uber app. Delivery operations expanded across Austin, Dallas, and Jersey City, while Avride robotaxi rides launched in Dallas on December 3, 2025.

Avride grew out of the Yandex autonomous-driving effort and retains substantial technical continuity with that team, but it now operates as a U.S.-based autonomous-mobility company headquartered in Austin, Texas. This is not Yandex operating Uber robotaxis, Uber buying Avride, or every Uber ride becoming autonomous.

What Uber and Avride agreed to

The agreement combines two related but distinct businesses:

  • Autonomous delivery: Avride robots can fulfill eligible Uber Eats orders in supported areas.
  • Robotaxis: Avride autonomous vehicles can be matched with eligible riders through Uber.

Uber supplies the consumer marketplace, ordering and trip-request experience, matching, and access to demand. Avride supplies the autonomous-driving technology, vehicles, delivery robots, fleet operations, and remote support. The arrangement lets Uber add autonomous capacity without developing every vehicle and autonomy system itself.

The original announcement planned delivery deployment in Austin, followed by Dallas and Jersey City. It said robotaxi service would follow the delivery rollout. Avride later disclosed that its delivery robots were serving hundreds of restaurants across those three cities, although that figure should not be treated as a current fleet count.

Uber’s 2024 partnership announcement describes the original scope and rollout sequence.

Who is Avride?

Avride is an Austin-based company developing autonomous cars and delivery robots. The company says its autonomous-driving work began in 2017 and that many members of its team previously worked on autonomous-driving technology at Yandex.

That makes “ex-Yandex self-driving group” a useful description of Avride’s technical roots, but not a complete corporate description. Avride is not simply the current Yandex ride-hailing operation under another name, and the Dallas service should not be described as Yandex operating robotaxis in the United States. Contemporary corporate materials place Avride within the broader post-Yandex structure associated with Nebius, while Avride presents itself as a U.S.-based autonomous-mobility company.

Avride’s own company history and about page explains the relationship in terms of personnel and technical experience rather than suggesting that Uber owns the company.

How Avride’s delivery robots work

Avride’s delivery vehicle is a four-wheeled autonomous robot designed for sidewalks, pedestrian areas, and crosswalks. The company lists these specifications:

Specification Avride’s stated figure
Maximum speed Approximately 8 km/h, or 5 mph
Range Up to 50 km, or 31 miles, per charge
Maximum cargo weight Up to 25 kg, or 55 lb
Cargo dimensions Approximately 520 × 464 × 300 mm
Sensors Lidar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors

The cargo compartment remains locked during the trip. The intended recipient receives an arrival notification and uses an Unlock control in the app to open it. After removing the order, the customer closes the compartment.

Avride says the robot can identify traffic lights, pedestrians, vehicles, and animals, cross marked roads autonomously, and receive assistance from remote operators when it encounters an unusual situation. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities and specifications, not independent safety testing or a guarantee of equal performance in every neighborhood and weather condition. More detail is available on Avride’s robot product page.

The Uber Eats customer experience

  1. Place an eligible order through Uber Eats.
  2. If a robot is available for the restaurant, route, time, and destination, Uber may present autonomous delivery as an option.
  3. The robot collects the order and travels to the delivery location.
  4. Uber or Avride sends an arrival notification.
  5. Use the app’s Unlock control to open the compartment.
  6. Remove the order and close the compartment.

Robot delivery is conditional. Availability can depend on the delivery area, participating restaurant, route, operating hours, weather, and fleet capacity. A robot may also be unsuitable for a large order or a destination it cannot physically access.

The final few yards can be the hardest part. Apartment buildings, gates, stairs, office lobbies, hotels, campuses, and secured entrances may require the customer to meet the robot outside. Sidewalks, curbs, blocked crossings, pedestrian congestion, and construction can also make a robot’s route slower or prevent it from reaching the exact requested location. A robot is not necessarily faster than a human courier.

During the Austin rollout, customers were reported to have the option to decline a robot and request conventional courier delivery. The exact current interface can vary, so customers should rely on the choices shown in the Uber Eats app rather than assume that option is always available.

How the Dallas Avride robotaxi service works

Uber and Avride announced robotaxi rides in Dallas on December 3, 2025. The initial vehicles are fully electric Hyundai Ioniq 5s equipped with Avride’s autonomous-driving system.

Riders request a trip through Uber and may be matched with an Avride vehicle when one is available for the requested route and service area. Uber’s Dallas page tells riders to verify that the vehicle’s license plate and make and model match the information shown in the app before entering.

This is more precise than calling it “Uber’s robotaxi.” The vehicle and autonomy system come from Avride; the booking and customer-facing marketplace come from Uber. It is also not a universal Dallas transportation service. Avride’s terms say availability can be limited by geography, operating hours, capacity, and technical or economic considerations.

“Autonomous” also does not automatically mean that every trip is completely unattended. Avride’s terms preserve the possibility that a safety driver may be present for certain services. Uber describes Avride vehicles as designed to operate as fully autonomous robotaxis, but the actual configuration can depend on the service and operating conditions.

Riders should expect limitations involving pickup points, mapped roads, accessibility requirements, luggage, unusual weather, road construction, emergency scenes, blocked lanes, and trips outside the approved operating area. Avride’s terms of service contain additional restrictions and passenger requirements.

Why Uber is working with autonomous-vehicle companies

Uber’s role is increasingly that of an autonomous-mobility marketplace rather than a company that must build every autonomous vehicle itself. The benefits include:

  • Adding autonomous capacity without manufacturing the vehicles or developing the entire autonomy stack.
  • Keeping autonomous trips inside the Uber app and its existing customer network.
  • Potentially reducing variable labor costs if autonomous fleets become reliable and economical at scale.
  • Adding delivery capacity in dense areas or during courier shortages.
  • Learning how to dispatch, support, and utilize autonomous fleets.
  • Working with multiple technology providers instead of depending on one supplier.

Uber’s separate Waymo agreement illustrates this broader strategy. Waymo autonomous rides launched through Uber in Austin in March 2025. Uber can therefore act as the demand, dispatch, and customer-service layer while different autonomy companies provide vehicles and systems in different markets.

His reactions aren’t pre-set; they adapt to what’s happening around him. And because his behaviors update through the app, LOOI keeps learning new tricks, new expressions, and new ways to interact. You’re not buying a finished product—you’re bringing home a character that keeps evolving.
  • 5. A Mind of His Own: Personality & Autonomy ✨ LOOI isn’t designed to obey every command—he’s designed to understand and respond. With TangibleFuture’s autonomous behavior system, LOOI combines environmental understanding with large-model reasoning to make spontaneous decisions and express them through animation and movement. His behavior isn’t fully predictable. He has his own ideas, which makes him feel truly alive.

The strategy has trade-offs. Uber may gain access to autonomous capacity, but the autonomy provider controls important technology, operating constraints, and fleet economics. Uber must also manage customer expectations when an autonomous trip is unavailable, cancelled, delayed, or routed differently from a conventional ride.

Why delivery robots and robotaxis belong in the same partnership

The two products operate in very different environments, but they share technical foundations:

  • Data collection and software updates

Avride says its cars and delivery robots share underlying solutions adapted to each platform, allowing the systems to learn from one another. That does not mean success with a sidewalk robot proves that road-going autonomy is solved.

A delivery robot moves at roughly walking speed and operates mainly around pedestrians, sidewalks, crossings, curbs, and building entrances. A robotaxi must operate at higher speeds while handling lane positioning, complex intersections, emergency vehicles, unpredictable drivers, passenger safety, and much more severe consequences when something goes wrong. The shared technology is strategically useful, but the safety and regulatory challenge is not equivalent.

The business case for Avride

For Avride, Uber provides distribution. The company does not have to build a large, standalone ride-hailing marketplace to find passengers, and Uber Eats supplies restaurant demand for its delivery robots. Both products also generate operating experience in real-world environments.

For Uber, autonomous delivery may be an easier first commercial step than passenger robotaxis. A low-speed robot carrying food has a smaller operating envelope and does not carry a passenger. That does not eliminate safety, liability, accessibility, or reliability concerns, but it can allow the companies to develop fleet operations before attempting larger-scale passenger service.

The long-term economic argument depends on more than removing a driver from a vehicle. Autonomous fleets must be purchased, charged, cleaned, maintained, insured, remotely supervised, mapped, and supported. Vehicles must achieve high utilization, and customers must accept the service. In delivery, restaurants and customers must also tolerate the extra handoff steps and route limitations.

The central strategic question is whether Uber can aggregate enough autonomous fleets from several providers to keep demand inside its platform while maintaining safety, availability, and acceptable prices. The partnership is meaningful because it tests that platform model in both food delivery and passenger transportation—but it does not establish that the economics have already beaten conventional service.

Safety, privacy, and regulation

Delivery robots may be slow, but they still interact with pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, pets, curbs, crosswalks, and changing weather. Robotaxis operate in a higher-risk environment, where local rules, permits, insurance, accessibility requirements, and incident-reporting obligations can vary by city and state.

Remote support is not the same as remote driving every vehicle continuously. Avride says remote operators can assist when a robot encounters an unusual situation, while its terms acknowledge that a safety driver may be present in certain services. Neither “autonomous” nor “fully autonomous” should be read as a blanket claim that no human will ever be involved.

Privacy is another practical issue. Avride’s privacy policy says its services require precise location data and process information for navigation, coordination, safety, and incident response. Customers should review the relevant Avride privacy policy and Uber’s own privacy terms when using the services.

Claims that the systems are safer than human drivers, work in every weather condition, or can operate without intervention should be treated as company claims unless supported by independent comparative data or regulator findings.

What customers and restaurants should expect

For riders

  • An Avride vehicle may appear as a match, but riders cannot assume they can request one on demand.
  • Availability is limited by location, time, fleet capacity, route, and operating conditions.
  • Check the license plate and vehicle description in the app before entering.
  • Do not assume the vehicle supports oversized luggage, mobility equipment, or every accessibility need.
  • A safety driver may be present depending on the service.
  • Support and cancellation procedures may involve both Uber and Avride.

For Uber Eats customers

  • A robot may be offered only for eligible short-distance routes.
  • You may need to meet it at a curb or building entrance.
  • Locked cargo provides controlled access, but it does not solve stairs, gates, lobbies, or inaccessible drop-off points.
  • Human couriers remain necessary for unsuitable orders and locations.

For restaurants and merchants

Restaurants evaluating autonomous delivery should consider the pickup handoff, restaurant wait times, service radius, weather performance, multi-order capability, insurance, liability, incident response, and whether customers can reliably access the robot. Avride markets its robots as capable of integrating with existing operations without additional training or staff; that is a vendor claim, so merchants should confirm the details contractually.

Is this a nationwide autonomous Uber service?

No. It is a real commercial partnership with delivery operations in selected U.S. markets and a Dallas robotaxi launch, but availability remains geographically and operationally limited. Not every Uber rider in Dallas will be matched with an Avride vehicle, and not every Uber Eats customer in Austin, Dallas, or Jersey City will be offered a delivery robot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also no established universal robotaxi fare or guaranteed surcharge from the supplied official sources. Pricing can vary by market and trip, so readers should rely on the fare shown in the Uber app rather than assume an autonomous ride is cheaper than a conventional Uber.
