Toyota Hilux Champ: The $12K Thai Truck Behind the Enticing Mini-RV

Toyota’s Hilux Champ really is an inexpensive modular truck, but the $12,000 price does not include the Carryboy motorhome. Here is what the truck, camper conversion, payload, and U.S. import process actually involve.

Toyota really does sell an unusually inexpensive, highly configurable truck—but the roughly $12,000 figure applies to the Thai-market Hilux Champ as a bare commercial vehicle, not to the attractive five-sleeper motorhome shown in photos. That camper is a separate chassis-mounted conversion built by Thai body manufacturer Carryboy. Toyota Thailand currently lists the Hilux Champ from ฿519,000 to ฿615,000, while public figures for a finished Carryboy motorhome are around ฿2 million, with Toyota’s conversion portal estimating motorhome conversions at roughly ฿850,000–฿2,000,000 depending on the builder and specification.

In other words, the Hilux Champ is a real bargain as a simple, rear-wheel-drive conversion platform in Thailand. It is not a $12,000 mini-RV, not a new American-market Toyota Stout, and not an easy low-cost import for U.S. buyers.

What Toyota’s $12,000 truck actually is

The vehicle behind the headline is the Toyota Hilux Champ, the production version of Toyota’s IMV 0 concept. Toyota launched it in Thailand on November 27, 2023, positioning it as a deliberately simple commercial truck that could accept different bodies and business-specific conversions.

Toyota’s launch release described eight grades, short- and long-wheelbase versions, three engine choices, rear-wheel drive, and a network of more than 100 potential accessory manufacturers. The basic idea is less passenger pickup and more affordable rolling chassis: buy the truck, then add a dropside bed, cargo box, food-truck body, mobile office, emergency-service body, or camper.

The same basic IMV 0 family is sold under different names in some regional markets:

  • Hilux Champ in Thailand;
  • Hilux Rangga in Indonesia;
  • Tamaraw in the Philippines;
  • Hilux Stout in some Peruvian coverage, although local specifications and availability should be verified before treating it as identical in every respect.

Toyota’s official Thai announcement confirms the connection between the IMV 0 concept and the production Hilux Champ. The Philippine Tamaraw announcement likewise identifies that vehicle as being based on the IMV 0 platform. See Toyota’s Hilux Champ launch release and Toyota Philippines’ Tamaraw announcement.

It is important not to confuse the Champ with several other Toyotas. It is not a U.S. revival of the old Toyota Stout, not a kei truck, and not the same vehicle as the conventional Hilux Revo. Toyota positions it below the Hilux and relates it to the same general platform and engine family, but the Champ is a simpler cab-and-chassis commercial product.

It is also not established as an electric vehicle. Some concept coverage, including Car and Driver, described the IMV 0 as electric, but Toyota’s official Japan Mobility Show material did not publish a powertrain for the concept. The production Thai truck launched with gasoline and diesel engines. Calling the production Hilux Champ an electric truck is therefore incorrect.

The $12,000 price was for the base truck

The original headline price came from Toyota’s Thai launch price of ฿459,000. In 2024 coverage, that was converted to approximately $12,000–$12,550, depending on the exchange rate used. It described the inexpensive base truck, not a completed camper with a bathroom, appliances, water system, batteries, and furniture.

Toyota Thailand’s current online Hilux Champ listing shows prices beginning at ฿519,000, with listed variants reaching ฿615,000. Thai vehicle prices and model availability can change, so the current Toyota Thailand model page and its specification page are the appropriate references for a current purchase.

That price difference matters, but it is not the biggest financial misunderstanding. The much larger mistake is assuming the Carryboy motorhome is simply what Toyota delivers for the entry-level truck price.

Thailand-market Hilux Champ specifications

The following figures apply to the documented Thai-market truck and should not automatically be applied to every Hilux Rangga, Tamaraw, or other regional derivative.

The detailed dimensions and equipment are drawn from Toyota’s launch material and Thai catalogs, including the 2025 Hilux Champ catalog and 2026 catalog.

Engine availability has changed

Toyota’s 2023 launch lineup included 2.0-liter and 2.7-liter gasoline engines alongside the 2.4-liter diesel. The current Thai model page supplied for this article lists a diesel-focused range, so the original three-engine lineup should be treated as a launch specification rather than a guarantee of current availability.

The 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV turbo-diesel is listed at about 150 hp at 3,400 rpm. Toyota’s catalog gives approximately 343 Nm for the manual-transmission configuration and 400 Nm for the automatic. Those are useful commercial-truck figures, but they do not turn the Champ into a high-performance pickup.

How the modularity works

The Hilux Champ’s modularity is genuine, although it is not a consumer accessory ecosystem in which every body simply snaps on like a Lego block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The truck is available in forms that make body installation easier, including chassis-cab and deck versions. Toyota designed the deck with multiple pre-drilled mounting points and designated drilling areas in the body structure. The front bumper can also be removed and replaced in sections. Those details reduce the amount of custom fabrication needed for common commercial bodies.

Toyota also said it could provide customers with information about more than 100 accessory manufacturers. Its conversion program has shown or listed applications such as:

  • Food trucks and mobile kitchens;
  • Dry-cargo and delivery boxes;
  • Mobile offices;
  • Emergency and service vehicles;
  • Outdoor and recreational bodies;
  • Motorhomes and camper bodies.

The practical interpretation is that the Hilux Champ is a conversion-friendly commercial chassis. A substantial body still requires a specialist builder to handle structural attachment, wiring, plumbing, weight distribution, lighting, certification, and registration. Toyota’s model material and conversion portal show the ecosystem more accurately than the phrase crazy modularity alone.

The Carryboy mini-RV is a separate conversion

The photogenic camper associated with the headline is a Carryboy Hilux Champ motorhome. Carryboy builds the camper body; Toyota supplies the underlying Hilux Champ platform and promotes a broader conversion ecosystem. The finished vehicle should therefore be understood as a Toyota-based aftermarket or bodybuilder conversion, not as a $12,000 factory-built American-style RV.

The Carryboy design is a chassis-mounted alcove camper. Its layout, as described by New Atlas and presented in Carryboy’s motorhome materials, includes:

  • A raised sleeping alcove above the cab;
  • A dinette that converts into a bed;
  • A side-facing sofa that can combine with the dinette sleeping area;
  • A wet bathroom with a toilet and shower;
  • A sink outside the bathroom;
  • An approximately 80-liter refrigerator;
  • An optional microwave;
  • An optional slide-out exterior kitchen;
  • A water heater;
  • A generator, described in some public material as a 3-kW unit;
  • A 100-liter water tank;
  • Roof access and an exterior cargo box;
  • Electric entry steps;
  • Equipment that may include or be offered as options such as air conditioning, solar charging, a lithium leisure battery, and smart RV controls.

Carryboy and New Atlas describe the layout as sleeping up to five people. That is a sleeping-capacity claim, not a statement that five people can legally travel in the cab or camper. The base Hilux Champ is a two-person truck, and the conversion materials located for this article do not establish five belted travel seats.

The missing indoor kitchen is intentional

Rather than install a permanent kitchen block inside, the layout preserves floor space for the dinette and sofa. The refrigerator and optional microwave remain inside, while cooking is handled by the optional slide-out outdoor kitchen.

That is a sensible use of a very small camper, but it creates a clear trade-off. The interior feels more open as a lounge and sleeping area, yet cooking becomes less convenient in rain, cold weather, or at a crowded campsite. It is less self-contained than a conventional motorhome with an indoor galley.

What the camper really costs

Public pricing is difficult to compare because Thai sources do not always use the word conversion in the same way. The following figures should be kept separate:

Published figure What it appears to describe Why caution is needed
฿519,000–฿615,000 Current listed Thai Hilux Champ truck prices This is the base vehicle, not the completed camper
฿459,000 Original 2023 launch price Historical launch pricing, not the current listing
฿850,000–฿2,000,000 Toyota conversion-portal estimate for motorhome conversions The portal may be describing conversion work or packages in addition to the vehicle
Approximately ฿1,997,000 Public Carryboy launch material for a 2.4-liter diesel automatic LWB motorhome Confirm whether this is a complete vehicle, which options are included, and whether registration is included
Approximately ฿2 million Publicly reported price for the Carryboy Hilux Champ motorhome May refer to a particular complete vehicle or specification rather than every conversion

Toyota’s conversion portal lists an estimated range of ฿850,000–฿2,000,000. Carryboy’s public brochure and launch material, including its launch-price video, provide the higher approximately ฿2 million figure for a particular motorhome specification. Toyota leasing information also discusses conversion budgets in the same broad range; see Toyota Leasing’s conversion information.

Do not automatically add ฿2 million to the ฿519,000 truck price. First determine whether the quote is for:

  1. The conversion body only;
  2. The complete truck plus conversion;
  3. A basic body without appliances or optional equipment;
  4. A finished and registered motorhome;
  5. A show vehicle containing options that are not standard.

The reliable conclusion is not a single exact all-in price. It is that the camper costs several times more than the entry-level truck. The headline bargain applies to the platform; the motorhome is a separate million-baht project or finished vehicle.

The one-tonne payload claim does not belong to the finished RV

Toyota’s launch release states a maximum load of 1 tonne for the specified Thai-market 2.4-liter long-wheelbase deck truck. That is a figure for the base-truck configuration. It should not be presented as the payload remaining after Carryboy installs a camper body.

The motorhome adds weight from:

  • Fiberglass or composite bodywork;
  • Furniture, bed structures, and mattresses;
  • Refrigerator, microwave, water heater, and generator;
  • Leisure batteries, inverter, solar equipment, and wiring;
  • A 100-liter fresh-water tank and plumbing;
  • Waste-water equipment;
  • Air conditioning, awning, steps, ladder, and exterior storage;
  • Passengers, fuel, food, clothing, and camping equipment.

A full 100-liter water tank adds approximately 100 kilograms, or about 220 pounds, before the tank, plumbing, and waste-water hardware are counted. Five occupants and their luggage can consume the remaining margin quickly. The accessible Carryboy materials do not provide a clearly verifiable current dry weight, gross vehicle weight, axle limits, or remaining payload for the completed camper.

Before buying, a customer should obtain a builder-supplied weight certificate and verify:

  • Completed dry weight;
  • Gross vehicle weight rating;
  • Front and rear axle limits;
  • Actual tire load ratings and recommended pressures;
  • Remaining payload with full water and fuel;
  • Legal payload with the intended number of occupants;
  • Whether the generator, batteries, air conditioning, and outdoor kitchen are included in the quoted weight.

Suspension is an engineering question, not an accessory afterthought

A permanent camper body places a different load on the rear suspension than a lightly loaded cargo deck. Carryboy’s current site advertises suspension packages, including options customized by AC Power and Ironman. That does not prove a particular package is required on every conversion, but it does show that ride height, spring capacity, and load management are significant considerations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether the chosen build includes or requires heavier rear springs, auxiliary air springs, revised dampers, higher-rated tires, chassis reinforcement, or a suspension package approved by the builder. The answer should be based on measured axle loads, not the truck’s original one-tonne marketing claim.

Safety, road behavior, and off-road limits

Safety equipment varies by trim

Toyota’s Thai catalog lists equipment such as ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, GOA body construction, and SRS airbags. Forward-collision warning and related warning systems appear on specified trims rather than necessarily across the entire range. A buyer must check the exact grade instead of assuming that the cheapest truck has the same safety equipment as a higher trim.

No directly applicable independent crash-test result for the short-cab Hilux Champ was located in the supplied research. Do not take a conventional Hilux result from Euro NCAP or ANCAP and apply it automatically to the Champ. Those ratings concern other Hilux variants and markets.

It is a 2WD camper

The documented Thai Hilux Champ range is rear-wheel drive only. The Carryboy motorhome uses the long-wheelbase diesel automatic configuration and is not a four-wheel-drive rig. Its upright body, high roof, and rugged styling should not be mistaken for serious off-road capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding the camper body will also tend to increase the center of gravity, side-area exposure to crosswinds, braking demand, and rear overhang. It can reduce departure angle and make rough trails more punishing. These are straightforward engineering consequences of the conversion format, but Carryboy’s public material does not provide a complete set of measured handling or off-road specifications.

For paved touring, campsites, and moderate unpaved roads, the layout could be practical. For remote overlanding, deep sand, mud, steep rocky trails, or conditions where recovery capability matters, the lack of four-wheel drive and the uncertain payload margin are major limitations.

Can Americans buy one?

There is no Toyota USA retail listing or U.S. launch announcement established in the supplied material. Toyota has launched related IMV 0 derivatives in Southeast Asia, but regional availability does not make the Hilux Champ legal for direct U.S. sale.

A new Thai-market Hilux Champ cannot simply be purchased overseas and shipped to America as a cheap alternative to a Tacoma or van. For a vehicle less than 25 years old, permanent U.S. import generally requires compliance with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. A nonconforming vehicle may require a Registered Importer, while emissions compliance is a separate Environmental Protection Agency issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The commonly discussed exemptions do not solve the new-truck problem:

  • NHTSA’s safety exemption generally applies once a vehicle is at least 25 years old;
  • EPA’s emissions exemption is generally based on 21 years and original, unmodified condition;
  • A newly built Hilux Champ does not qualify for either age route;
  • Custom camper modifications can create additional certification, inspection, insurance, and registration questions.

Before sending money to an overseas seller, consult the official NHTSA import guidance, the EPA vehicle-import requirements, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s entry-documentation guidance, and a Registered Importer. State registration rules, insurance availability, duties, and classification can vary and should be checked separately.

Carryboy says its motorhomes are legally registered in Thailand, but that does not establish that the same body is legal in another country or U.S. state. Nor does the Hilux platform’s relationship to the conventional Hilux guarantee identical parts, electronics, body panels, or service support in a market where the Champ was never sold.

Who should consider the Hilux Champ?

The truck makes the most sense for a buyer in Thailand or another supported market who wants a new, simple commercial chassis and already has a credible conversion plan. It is especially compelling for:

  • Small businesses that can justify a specialized body;
  • Buyers with access to local Thai body builders and parts support;
  • Owners who prefer a fixed, professionally mounted camper rather than a removable slide-in unit;
  • Travelers who value a compact footprint relative to a full-size motorhome;
  • Owners who primarily use paved roads, campsites, and moderate gravel roads;
  • People willing to verify weights, registration, warranty, and after-sales support before taking delivery.

It is a poor fit for someone who needs four-wheel drive, a large indoor kitchen, a fully verified high payload after conversion, advanced driver assistance on every trim, easy service outside the sales market, or a simple U.S.-legal import path.

The most important questions to ask a seller

The photos make the Carryboy camper look complete and straightforward. The purchase decision is not. Ask the builder or dealer for written answers to these questions:

  1. Does the price include the base Hilux Champ? Ask for separate truck, body, options, tax, registration, and delivery line items.
  2. What is the completed dry weight? Request a certificate, not an estimate.
  3. What are the front and rear axle loads at delivery? Compare them with the truck’s legal limits.
  4. What payload remains with full water, fuel, batteries, and passengers?
  5. How many belted travel seats are legally approved? Do not confuse sleeping capacity with passenger capacity.
  6. Is the 100-liter water tank included? Confirm the tank, plumbing, and waste-water capacity.
  7. Is the generator standard? Confirm its rating, fuel source, noise provisions, and whether it is included in the quoted weight.
  8. Which air conditioning, solar, lithium-battery, and smart-control equipment is standard or optional?
  9. Does the build require upgraded springs, dampers, tires, or chassis work?
  10. Who warranties the conversion components? Toyota’s conversion material indicates that parts affected by the modification are assembled and warranted by the conversion operator rather than necessarily by Toyota.
  11. How is the completed vehicle registered? Thai registration does not automatically transfer to another jurisdiction.
  12. Can the camper body be removed? A chassis-mounted motorhome is not necessarily as easy to remove as a slide-in camper.
  13. What parts and service are shared with the conventional Hilux? Platform or engine-family relationships do not guarantee global interchangeability.

Is it really tiny?

The word tiny is relative. The long-wheelbase deck truck is approximately 5.3 meters, or 17.4 feet, long before a camper body’s rear structure, ladder, storage box, or overhang is considered. Its narrow width and short-nose design can make it feel compact compared with a full-size motorhome, but it is not a kei truck and should not be treated as a micro-camper in the strict sense.

Its appeal comes from a different combination: a relatively narrow commercial chassis, a small turning radius, an efficient use of interior volume, and an ecosystem designed around local conversion work.

Bottom line

The Hilux Champ is clever because Toyota separated the affordable truck from the expensive use case. In Thailand, the base vehicle offers a simple rear-wheel-drive platform with multiple lengths, commercial-grade diesel power, pre-drilled mounting points, and a genuine body-conversion ecosystem. That is what the roughly ฿459,000 launch price—and the current ฿519,000-plus range—actually buys.

The Carryboy motorhome is a different proposition. It adds a real wet bath, sleeping alcove, convertible lounge, refrigerator, water system, electrical equipment, and optional outdoor kitchen, but it also adds a substantial and incompletely published amount of weight and cost. Public pricing around ฿2 million is much closer to the finished-camper reality than the $12,000 headline.

For the right Thai-market buyer, it is an appealing compact commercial camper. For a North American shopper looking for an inexpensive Tacoma alternative or an importable mini-RV, the regulatory obstacles, lack of four-wheel drive, uncertain finished payload, and limited local support make the bargain far less enticing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Toyota Hilux Champ cost $12,000 with the camper body?

No. The roughly $12,000 figure came from the Thai launch price of ฿459,000 for the base Hilux Champ truck. Toyota Thailand’s current listing starts at ฿519,000, while the Carryboy motorhome conversion has been publicly described at around ฿2 million. Always confirm whether a quoted conversion price includes the truck, options, registration, and taxes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many people can the Carryboy Hilux Champ motorhome legally carry?

Carryboy and published coverage describe the layout as sleeping up to five people. That does not establish five legal travel seats. The base Hilux Champ is a two-person truck, and the completed vehicle’s approved belt-equipped seating must be confirmed with the builder and registration authority.

Does the Hilux Champ have four-wheel drive?

No four-wheel-drive Hilux Champ is documented in the Thai range covered here. The Thai truck and Carryboy camper are rear-wheel drive. The raised camper body also increases height, wind exposure, and off-road limitations.

Can I import a new Hilux Champ into the United States?

It is not a simple import. A vehicle less than 25 years old generally must meet U.S. safety requirements, while EPA emissions compliance is a separate issue. A nonconforming vehicle may require a Registered Importer, and the new truck cannot use the 25-year safety exemption. Check NHTSA, EPA, CBP, and state registration rules before purchasing.

Is the Hilux Champ an electric truck?

The production Thai Hilux Champ launched with gasoline and diesel engines. Some concept coverage called the IMV 0 electric, but Toyota’s official concept material did not establish a powertrain, so the production vehicle should not be described as electric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the finished motorhome retain Toyota’s full vehicle warranty?

Do not assume so. Toyota’s conversion information indicates that components affected by the conversion are assembled and warranted by the conversion operator. The exact division between Toyota’s truck warranty and the bodybuilder’s warranty must be obtained in writing.

The Bottom Line

The Toyota Hilux Champ is a real, affordable modular truck in its home market—but the $12,000 price is for the base chassis, not the Carryboy mini-RV. Once the camper body, systems, options, registration, and payload engineering are included, the practical price is closer to the million-to-two-million-baht conversion market. It is an intriguing Thai-market platform, but not an inexpensive, straightforward U.S. import.
