The rise and fall of Rad Power Bikes is a story of a direct-to-consumer ebike brand that grew rapidly through pandemic-era demand, heavy investment, and a large retail-and-service footprint, then hit normalized demand, high operating costs, safety exposure, and financing strain. Rad Power Bikes Inc. entered Chapter 11 in December 2025, but Life EV acquired the brand’s assets in March 2026.
That answer needs an important qualification: the original corporate structure and the consumer brand are no longer the same thing. Rad Power Bikes Inc. is the pre-bankruptcy company identified in the Chapter 11 court record; Rad Life Mobility is the post-acquisition entity named on the current warranty terms; and Life EV is the company that says it acquired Rad Power Bikes assets.

The result is neither a clean disappearance nor a business-as-usual continuation. Rad remains a recognizable ebike brand with current product and service pages, while owners of older bikes must separately check battery safety, warranty eligibility, parts, and support.

- Rad Power Bikes grew from a direct-to-consumer utility-ebike company into a heavily funded brand with online sales, retail locations, service operations, and more than 700 employees expected by the end of 2021.
- Rad announced more than $329 million in cumulative financing transactions by October 2021, but funding and expansion did not remove the inventory, logistics, warranty, service, and safety costs of a physical-product business.
- The 2022 RadWagon 4 recall involved approximately 29,300 bikes, 137 incident reports, and eight injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
- On November 24, 2025, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using specified Rad lithium-ion batteries after reporting 31 fires and approximately $734,500 in property damage.
- Rad Power Bikes Inc. entered Chapter 11 in December 2025 after an employee warning that operations could end without new funding or an acquisition.
- The Rad brand survived when Life EV acquired Rad Power Bikes assets on March 5, 2026, but Rad Life Mobility’s current warranty terms distinguish post-acquisition purchases from many earlier products.
How did Rad Power Bikes become a breakout ebike brand?
Rad Power Bikes began as a practical transportation project rather than as a conventional bicycle retailer adding electric models. The company’s official history says Mike Radenbaugh built his first ebike as a teenager, converted conventional bikes for years, and joined Ty Collins in 2015 to relaunch the business as a direct-to-consumer company. The first manufactured Rad model was the RadRover. Rad’s official company history describes the early origin and the 2015 relaunch.

“Mike Radenbaugh built his first ebike in 2007 as a way to get to high school and back.”
That origin shaped Rad’s identity. Rad sold ebikes as useful transportation for commuting, carrying children, hauling cargo, making deliveries, and replacing some short car trips—not only as recreational equipment for cycling enthusiasts. Direct-to-consumer sales gave Rad control over its customer relationship, product design, online merchandising, and brand message.
The same model also created a demanding obligation: Rad had to support a large number of relatively heavy, electrically complex products after the sale. A company selling utility ebikes needs parts, mechanics, batteries, warranty administration, technical support, fulfillment, and a way for customers to obtain service when shipping a cargo bike is impractical.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why did Rad Power Bikes need so much capital?
Rad needed capital because its growth strategy required physical infrastructure, inventory, and human support rather than only software or digital advertising. Rad’s October 28, 2021 financing announcement said the company had raised $154 million from existing investors, following a $150 million investment announced in February 2021, and that cumulative financing transactions since inception exceeded $329 million.
Rad Power Bikes’ October 2021 financing announcement identifies the investors, the $154 million round, and the stated cumulative total of more than $329 million in financing transactions.
According to Rad Power Bikes’ December 2021 company statement, Rad expected to finish 2021 with more than 700 employees. The same expansion plan called for more Rad Mobile Service operations, more Rad Retail Stores, a tripling of physical locations by the end of 2022, additional distribution centers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe, and greater fulfillment capacity. Rad’s December 2021 company statement documents the employee projection and expansion plans.
| Growth investment | What Rad was building | Why the investment mattered later |
|---|---|---|
| More than $329 million in stated cumulative financing transactions by October 2021 | Inventory, product development, distribution, retail, mobile service, and customer support | The company had a substantial physical cost base to carry when ebike demand normalized |
| More than 700 expected employees at the end of 2021 | Staff for sales, operations, fulfillment, support, retail, and service | Reducing capacity could lower costs but could also make warranty and repair support harder for owners |
| Planned expansion across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe | A broader geographic sales and support footprint | International distribution and service increased operational complexity alongside growth |
Investment is not the same as profitability. Rad’s financing demonstrated investor confidence and gave the company resources to expand, but the financing did not eliminate the basic economics of ebikes: products must be manufactured and stored before sale, transported to customers, maintained after sale, and repaired or replaced when something goes wrong.

What did Rad’s product and retail strategy look like before the crisis?
Rad continued to launch products and add sales channels even as the business moved into a more difficult period. In March 2024, Rad announced four new ebikes and a Safe Shield Battery with thermal-resistant technology. In August 2024, Rad launched the lighter, lower-priced RadKick with either a chain drive or Rad’s first belt-drive configuration. Rad also expanded omnichannel distribution through Best Buy during 2024. Rad’s March 2024 product announcement and its RadKick announcement document that product expansion.
On April 30, 2025, Rad announced a new RadRunner family consisting of the RadRunner, RadRunner Plus, and RadRunner Max, together with a RadRunner Range Extender. Rad described the models as all-purpose cargo ebikes with longer range, more hauling power, and safety upgrades. The 2025 RadRunner announcement shows that product development and brand activity continued close to the company’s eventual Chapter 11 filing.
Those launches create an important distinction. Rad did not stop innovating before its financial distress became public. Product momentum, a broader lineup, and more retail access could help sales, but they could not by themselves solve cash-flow pressure, warranty exposure, recall obligations, or the cost of maintaining a nationwide support network.
Were Rad Power Bikes’ safety problems part of the company’s decline?
Safety events became part of Rad’s business problem because recalls and battery warnings can create direct replacement costs, customer-service demands, reputational damage, and potential legal exposure. The available record identifies specific products and incidents; it does not support a claim that every Rad ebike or every Rad battery was defective.

What happened with the RadWagon 4 recall?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s November 3, 2022 recall notice covered approximately 29,300 RadWagon 4 electric cargo bikes. The CPSC said a misaligned rim strip could cause an inner tube to pop and damage the tire, while ribbed-sidewall tires could unexpectedly go flat. Either condition could cause a loss of control or crash. The agency reported 137 incident reports and eight injuries. The CPSC RadWagon 4 recall notice contains the affected-product and incident figures.
The RadWagon 4 episode was not a judgment on the entire Rad range. It was, however, an example of how a hardware defect can affect a fast-growing direct-to-consumer company at scale: identifying affected units, communicating with owners, supplying corrective parts or repairs, and rebuilding confidence all require money and operational capacity.
Which Rad batteries did the CPSC warn about?
On November 24, 2025, the CPSC warned consumers to immediately stop using specified Rad lithium-ion batteries with model numbers RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. The agency said the batteries could unexpectedly ignite and explode, particularly after the battery or harness had been exposed to water and debris. The CPSC reported 31 fires and approximately $734,500 in property damage. The CPSC battery safety warning identifies the models, reported fires, and property damage.

The CPSC instructed consumers to remove the affected battery from the ebike and dispose of it through local hazardous-waste procedures. The agency also said:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Do not sell or give away these hazardous batteries.”
The CPSC further stated that Rad had not agreed to an acceptable recall and, given Rad’s financial situation, indicated that it could not provide replacement batteries or refunds to all consumers. Rad’s newsroom archive records a response disputing the CPSC’s characterization of certain batteries. The regulator’s warning and Rad’s disagreement are separate positions; neither supports the broader claim that all Rad batteries are affected.
If a Rad owner sees one of the named model numbers, the appropriate first step is not to test the battery, sell it, give it away, or substitute an unverified aftermarket battery. Follow the CPSC’s removal and hazardous-waste instructions. A battery that physically fits a bike is not automatically electrically or thermally safe.
When did the shutdown risk become public?
The possibility of a shutdown became public on November 10, 2025, when TechCrunch reported that Rad employees had received an internal message warning that the company could shut down in January without new funding or an acquirer. The report said leadership was still pursuing ways to continue and that a promising deal had not closed. TechCrunch’s November 10, 2025 report describes the employee communication and its conditional language.

The wording matters. Rad had not yet announced a completed liquidation on November 10. The message described a survival risk dependent on a financing event or acquisition. That warning came after the company had built a substantial product, retail, fulfillment, and service operation and while the battery-safety dispute was becoming public.
Did Rad Power Bikes file for bankruptcy?
Yes. Rad Power Bikes Inc. entered Chapter 11 in December 2025. A December 16, 2025 order from the United States Bankruptcy Court identified Rad Power Bikes Inc. as a Chapter 11 debtor and provided for joint administration with Summit Collective, Inc. The December 16, 2025 bankruptcy-court order is the primary source for the court proceeding.
Chapter 11 is a court-supervised restructuring or sale process. Chapter 11 does not mean that every Rad-branded bike instantly disappears, that every service channel closes on the filing date, or that all customer warranties receive the same treatment. The legal process creates a framework for reorganizing the business or selling assets while the debtor’s obligations are addressed through the court.
The distinction between legal entity and consumer brand is essential:
| Name | Role in the timeline | What readers should infer |
|---|---|---|
| Rad Power Bikes | The consumer-facing ebike brand | Rad-branded products, service pages, and product announcements can continue even after a corporate ownership change |
| Rad Power Bikes Inc. | The pre-bankruptcy company identified as a Chapter 11 debtor in December 2025 | Older contracts, claims, and warranties cannot be assumed to transfer unchanged |
| Rad Life Mobility | The post-acquisition operating entity issuing the current limited warranty | Warranty rights depend on the purchase date, product, and applicable current or prior-ownership terms |
| Life EV | The buyer whose materials say it completed the acquisition of Rad Power Bikes assets | The transaction was an asset acquisition, not proof that the original legal entity remained unchanged |
Who bought Rad Power Bikes?
Life Electric Vehicles Holdings, commonly referred to as Life EV, says it completed the acquisition of Rad Power Bikes assets on March 5, 2026. Life EV’s March 5, 2026 media-room announcement is the source for the reported completion date.
The most accurate description is therefore that Life EV acquired Rad Power Bikes’ assets and the Rad brand continued under a new ownership structure. Saying simply that “Rad Power Bikes went out of business” loses the distinction between the original corporation and the brand that survived through an asset sale. Saying that nothing changed for customers is equally inaccurate.
What changed for Rad warranties after the acquisition?
Warranty treatment depends on the purchase date, the product, the applicable terms, and the ownership history. Rad Life Mobility’s current limited-warranty page says the warranty is issued by Rad Life Mobility, a Florida corporation, for qualifying products purchased in the United States or Canada after May 15, 2026. The same page says products purchased before December 15, 2025 may have warranties affected by the change in ownership and directs owners to a separate Prior Ownership Warranties section. Rad Life Mobility’s current warranty terms provide the relevant dates and ownership qualification.
The evidence does not support either extreme: “all old warranties are void” or “every old warranty is automatically honored.” Owners with pre-acquisition bikes should obtain a case-specific answer from the current support channel and keep their purchase receipt, serial number, model number, prior support emails, repair records, and any recall correspondence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Rad Power Bikes still supported?
Rad’s current support materials list Rad Service Centers and retail service partners, including neighborhood bike shops, mobile service providers, tune-up services, flat-tire repair, and mechanic support. Rad’s current locations page advertises more than 1,200 service partners nationwide. Owners should confirm that a listed provider services their specific model and can handle its electrical system before scheduling work. Rad’s service-center page and Rad’s locations page describe the current support network.
That network is especially important for cargo and utility ebikes. A customer may be able to replace a tube or adjust a mechanical component locally, but battery faults, wiring problems, display errors, and controller issues may require model-specific diagnosis. An electric bike repair shop can be a practical option when an official center is unavailable, but owners should verify qualifications and parts compatibility rather than assume that any bicycle shop can safely repair a high-voltage ebike system.
What should current Rad owners do now?
- Identify the bike and battery. Record the model, frame serial number, battery model number, charger model, and purchase date. The CPSC warning applies to specified battery models, not automatically to every Rad battery.
- Check the three named battery models. Compare the battery label with RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. If the battery matches a model named in the CPSC warning, stop using it and remove it from the ebike as instructed by the CPSC.
- Use hazardous-waste guidance. Do not put an affected lithium-ion battery in household trash, sell it, give it away, or send it through an ordinary shipping channel. Contact the local hazardous-waste or battery recycling service identified by your municipality and follow its acceptance and transport instructions.
- Preserve evidence. Save receipts, order confirmations, serial-number photographs, warranty claims, repair invoices, and communications with Rad. Those records are useful when the ownership change makes warranty eligibility less obvious.
- Confirm service before transporting the bike. Use Rad’s current service locator first, then ask a qualified repair shop whether it supports the exact model and electrical system. A provider’s ability to repair tires or brakes does not necessarily mean it can diagnose a battery or controller.
- Ask for written warranty clarification. Give the current operator the model, serial number, purchase date, seller, and prior claim history. Ask which warranty terms apply instead of relying on a general statement about the acquisition.
Is a Rad Power Bikes electric bike still worth buying?
A Rad Power Bikes electric bike may still be a reasonable purchase for a buyer who can verify the seller, product identity, battery status, service access, and applicable warranty. The post-acquisition history means the decision should be based on the particular bike and transaction—not solely on Rad’s former reputation or on the fact that the brand remains visible online.
Readers comparing a Rad Power Bikes electric bike should verify the current seller, purchase date, warranty entity, return terms, battery model, recall status, replacement-part availability, and nearby service coverage before paying. Marketplace inventory, seller identity, pricing, and affiliate eligibility can change, so a listing alone is not evidence of warranty or safety coverage.
| Buying situation | Practical decision | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| New Rad-branded bike from a current seller | Consider only after confirming the post-acquisition warranty and service path | Seller identity, purchase date, Rad Life Mobility terms, battery model, returns, and local service |
| Used Rad bike with an unknown battery history | Pause until the battery model and recall status are documented | Battery label, frame serial number, charger, proof of purchase, and any safety notices |
| Bike fitted with RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, or HL-RP-S1304 | Do not use, sell, or give away the affected battery | CPSC removal instructions and the local hazardous-waste disposal process |
| Older bike with an unresolved warranty claim | Request a case-specific determination from the current operator | Receipt, serial number, original claim, repair history, and the applicable Prior Ownership Warranties terms |
| Bike needing electrical repair | Use a Rad service location or qualified ebike specialist | Whether the provider supports the exact model, battery, controller, and replacement parts |
What does Rad Power Bikes’ rise and fall reveal about ebike businesses?
Rad’s collapse risk was a business-model stress test rather than a simple story about one bad product or one failed executive decision. The company found product-market appeal, raised substantial financing, expanded its lineup, and built a recognizable utility-ebike brand. The difficulty was converting that momentum into a durable business after demand cooled and the cost of supporting a large physical network remained.
Six factors explain why the model became vulnerable:

- Demand timing: Exceptional pandemic-era demand could pull purchases forward, leaving a company with excess capacity or inventory when demand normalized.
- Channel complexity: Direct online sales can be supplemented by retail partnerships and stores, but every added channel creates operational and support requirements.
- After-sales obligations: Warranty claims, mechanics, replacement parts, electrical troubleshooting, and customer support continue after the original sale.
- Safety execution: Recalls and battery warnings can create cash needs and reputational pressure precisely when a company is already financially constrained.
- Ownership continuity: An asset acquisition can preserve a brand while leaving customers to determine which legal entity handles older warranties and claims.
These same questions are useful when comparing Rad with other venture-backed ebike companies such as VanMoof. The relevant comparison is not merely which brand sold more bikes. It is whether each business could finance inventory, absorb demand normalization, maintain service, handle safety obligations, and preserve parts and warranty continuity when the original corporate structure came under pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Rad Power Bikes go out of business?
Rad Power Bikes did not disappear entirely. Rad Power Bikes Inc. entered Chapter 11 in December 2025, but Life EV said it acquired Rad Power Bikes assets on March 5, 2026, allowing the consumer brand and support operations to continue under a new ownership structure.
Who bought Rad Power Bikes?
Life Electric Vehicles Holdings, commonly known as Life EV, said it completed the acquisition of Rad Power Bikes assets on March 5, 2026. The transaction was an asset acquisition, so it should not be described as the original Rad Power Bikes Inc. remaining unchanged.
What happens to an older Rad Power Bikes warranty after the bankruptcy?
Older Rad warranties are not automatically answered by the current warranty page. Rad Life Mobility’s current terms apply to qualifying United States and Canada purchases after May 15, 2026, while products purchased before December 15, 2025 may be affected by the ownership change and are directed to prior-ownership warranty terms.
Which Rad Power Bikes batteries are affected by the CPSC warning?
The CPSC warning names battery models RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. Owners with one of those batteries should immediately stop using it, remove it from the ebike, and follow local hazardous-waste disposal procedures; owners should not sell or give away the battery.
Is it still worth buying a Rad Power Bike?
A Rad bike can be considered only after the buyer verifies the exact battery model, recall status, seller, purchase date, warranty entity, return terms, replacement parts, and nearby service. A used bike with an unknown battery history deserves particular caution, and a battery that physically fits is not automatically a safe replacement.
The Bottom Line
Rad Power Bikes did not simply disappear: Rad Power Bikes Inc. entered Chapter 11, while Life EV acquired the Rad assets and the brand continued under Rad Life Mobility. The company’s experience shows why an ebike purchase requires more than a product check—owners should verify the battery, recall status, warranty entity, parts, and local service.
