Tesla Takedown is a distributed protest campaign aimed at Elon Musk, Tesla, and Musk’s role in federal government. It presents itself as peaceful and uses protests, boycotts, divestment, and Tesla’s consumer brand to apply pressure. A separate wave of vandalism, arson, threats, and other property crimes unfolded during the same period. Those incidents are part of the wider news story, but they should not automatically be attributed to Tesla Takedown.
The campaign surged in February and March 2025, including a major international day of action on March 29. Tesla’s sales were weak during 2025, and academic research suggests Musk’s partisan activity reduced demand. But the protests were not the only possible cause, and Tesla’s reported second-quarter 2026 deliveries later rebounded to 480,126 vehicles.

The short version
Tesla Takedown is an organized, distributed protest campaign aimed at Elon Musk, Tesla, and Musk’s role in federal government. Its public materials describe it as a peaceful movement built around protests, boycotts, divestment, and pressure on Tesla’s brand. A separate set of incidents involving vandalism, arson, threats, and other property damage occurred during the same period. Those crimes have often been covered alongside the protests, but the available evidence does not justify treating every attack—or every person arrested—as part of Tesla Takedown.

Organizers promoted March 29 as a major international day of action. Their strategy was straightforward: Tesla is one of the most visible consumer brands associated with Musk, so a showroom, vehicle, charging site, stock holding, or Tesla logo could become a physical pressure point in a much broader political conflict.

The commercial question is more complicated than whether a protest caused a particular sales decline. Tesla delivered 384,122 vehicles in the second quarter of 2025, down 13% from a year earlier. A 2025 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper estimated that Musk’s partisan activity had a substantial negative effect on U.S. Tesla demand, but it did not measure losses caused by Tesla Takedown protests alone. Tesla’s reported second-quarter 2026 deliveries later rose to 480,126, showing that the downturn did not continue in a straight line. That rebound does not settle the separate questions about Tesla’s brand, product strategy, governance, or Musk’s political involvement.
Why protesters chose Tesla
Tesla Takedown emerged after Musk became a prominent political figure as well as Tesla’s best-known executive and public representative. Protesters objected to Musk’s support for Donald Trump and conservative political causes, his role associated with the Department of Government Efficiency, federal workforce reductions, and concerns about access to government data and decision-making. Those are the campaign’s stated grievances and participant motivations, not neutral findings that every Tesla customer shares.
The campaign’s central argument is that buying a Tesla can help financially empower Musk. That makes the automaker a more tangible target than a general protest directed at a government policy or political official. Demonstrators can stand outside a showroom, speak to potential buyers, display signs beside a recognizable vehicle, encourage owners to sell their cars, or urge investors to sell Tesla stock.

Tesla’s unusually close identification with Musk is important here. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K tells investors that the company depends heavily on Musk’s services. It also notes that he holds management positions or significant roles at other companies and does not devote all of his time and attention to Tesla. The filing identifies political, regulatory, international, reputational, and operational risks that can affect the company. It does not say that Tesla Takedown caused a specific amount of lost revenue, but it provides primary-source context for why Musk’s public conduct can become a Tesla business issue.
What Tesla Takedown says it is
The movement’s website calls Tesla Takedown a Peaceful Protest Movement. Its public-facing materials direct people to protest locations and invite supporters to share stories about selling Tesla vehicles or Tesla stock. The campaign’s objectives have included:
- organizing demonstrations outside Tesla showrooms and dealerships;
- encouraging boycotts of Tesla products and services;
- encouraging Tesla shareholders or potential investors to divest;
- making Musk’s political activity visible to Tesla customers and the public; and
- using Tesla’s brand and consumer footprint to pressure Musk.
It is best understood as a distributed campaign rather than a conventional organization with a clearly documented membership total. The official website remains active and continues to direct readers toward protests, but the sources available for this article do not establish how many people currently participate or whether the campaign has maintained the same level of central coordination and activity since the major 2025 actions.
Tesla Takedown timeline: early 2025 through the later business fallout
Early 2025: Tesla becomes a political symbol
As Musk became deeply involved in the Trump administration, Tesla properties increasingly became locations for political demonstrations. Tesla vehicles and facilities offered a highly visible symbol of the conflict surrounding Musk. The protests ranged from conventional rallies and signs to theatrical actions intended to attract media and public attention.
February and March 2025: protests spread
Demonstrations expanded substantially during March. Local groups organized protests outside showrooms in cities across the United States and in Europe. The movement’s organizers promoted March 29 as a global day of action, and NPR described that weekend as a major worldwide protest against Musk’s influential role in the Trump administration.
The choice of Tesla locations gave the campaign a concrete presence in communities. Instead of protesting only at a government building, demonstrators could gather near a dealership where people were shopping for cars. That visibility also made it easier for news coverage to connect the protests to Tesla’s sales, brand image, and stock price—even though visibility itself is not proof of a measurable financial effect.

March 2025: criminal attacks become a parallel story
During the same period, news reports documented Tesla vehicles, dealerships, charging locations, and other property being defaced, damaged, or attacked. Reported incidents included graffiti, broken windows, arson, and other property crimes. Police and prosecutors handled individual incidents separately, and each case requires its own law-enforcement statements, charging documents, or court records.
The overlap in timing created an understandable but potentially misleading narrative. A peaceful protest outside a showroom and an overnight arson attack at a Tesla facility may both appear in a story about hostility toward Tesla, but that does not establish that they involved the same people, organizers, or motives.
2025–2026: the argument shifts toward business and governance
As the immediate protest wave became part of a broader backlash against Musk, the discussion moved beyond demonstrations. Investors and customers also faced questions about the risks of founder concentration, Musk’s time divided among several companies, Tesla’s product lineup, competitive pressure, and the consequences of making a consumer brand so closely dependent on one politically polarizing figure.
Peaceful demonstrations and criminal attacks are not the same story
This distinction is the most important fact-checking point in coverage of Tesla Takedown.
| What can reasonably be said | What should not be assumed |
|---|---|
| Tesla Takedown publicly presents itself as peaceful and promotes protests, boycotts, and divestment. | That every act committed by someone who opposed Musk was organized or approved by Tesla Takedown. |
| Tesla property was vandalized and attacked in several reported incidents during the 2025 protest period. | That the existence of a protest at a Tesla location proves protesters committed a nearby crime. |
| Authorities investigated individual cases involving damage, arson, threats, and other conduct. | That a broad political label such as domestic terrorism is a settled legal classification in every case. |
| Musk and Donald Trump publicly condemned attacks on Tesla property. | That political condemnations establish who organized a particular incident or what the final legal outcome will be. |
Calls for severe criminal penalties and descriptions of some attacks as domestic terrorism were part of the political response. Those descriptions should be attributed to the people who made them. They should not replace the more precise language of police investigations, criminal charges, convictions, or court findings.
The distinction also matters strategically. Criminal attacks can damage vehicles owned by people who are not politically involved, increase security and insurance costs, frighten employees and customers, and shift public attention away from the campaign’s original objections. They can also give Musk and his political allies an opportunity to frame the entire backlash as a public-safety issue rather than a debate about political influence, corporate governance, or consumer choice.

There is no clean public accounting that attributes a specific number of lost Tesla sales to the protests. The most defensible explanation is multi-causal: Musk’s politics may have damaged Tesla’s appeal among some customers, while competition, aging models, pricing, incentives, interest rates, regional economic conditions, production changes, and broader EV demand also affected results.
The 2025 delivery decline
Tesla reported 384,122 vehicle deliveries in the second quarter of 2025, a 13% year-over-year decline. The total included:
- 373,728 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles; and
- 10,394 vehicles in other Tesla model lines.
Those figures show a weak quarter, but deliveries alone do not reveal why each customer did—or did not—buy. They cannot separate a customer who rejected Tesla because of Musk’s politics from one who preferred a competing vehicle, waited for a new model, faced financing costs, or encountered a different local incentive.

The NBER estimate of a Musk partisan effect
A 2025 working paper by Kenneth Gillingham, Matthew Kotchen, James Levinsohn, and Barry Nalebuff provides the strongest quantitative estimate identified in this research. Using county-level monthly vehicle-registration data and differences in partisan composition, the authors estimated that U.S. Tesla sales from October 2022 through April 2025 would have been 67% to 83% higher without the estimated effect of Musk’s partisan activity. In their counterfactual, that represented approximately 1 million to 1.26 million additional vehicles. The paper also estimated substitution toward other electric and hybrid vehicles.
That is a striking result, but it needs to be described accurately. It is the authors’ estimate in an academic working paper—not an audited Tesla loss, a company admission, or a consensus measurement of the effect of Tesla Takedown itself. The study addresses the estimated effect of Musk’s partisan activity over a period that includes the broader political backlash. It does not convert every protest, boycott call, or criminal incident into a separately measured number of lost sales.
The other explanations Tesla itself identifies
Tesla’s own filings caution that demand and financial performance can be affected by a wide range of conditions, including:
- competition from legacy automakers and Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers;
- the timing and competitiveness of Tesla’s model lineup and product cycle;
- pricing, discounts, and government incentives;
- interest rates and regional economic conditions;
- production and supply-chain changes;
- tariffs and other regulatory developments; and
- international political and economic conditions.
That makes a statement such as “the protests caused Tesla’s sales collapse” too broad. A more supportable description is: the protests became a highly visible expression of a broader backlash that coincided with Tesla’s sales weakness, while research suggests Musk’s partisan activity independently depressed demand.
Tesla’s reported 2026 delivery rebound
The latest commercial figures covered in this review complicate the idea of a continuing, uninterrupted Tesla decline. Tesla reported 480,126 deliveries in the second quarter of 2026, including:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- 467,762 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles; and
- 12,364 vehicles in other models.
Tesla also reported 451,758 vehicles produced and 13.5 gigawatt-hours of energy-storage deployments in the quarter. Compared with the second quarter of 2025, reported deliveries were about 25% higher.
That rebound is important context. It indicates that the sharpest part of the 2025 sales downturn did not simply continue in a straight line. It does not prove that the controversy disappeared, that former customers returned because of a change in political sentiment, or that Tesla Takedown had no lasting effect. Nor does it establish that Tesla’s financial performance improved by the same percentage as deliveries.
Tesla specifically cautions that quarterly deliveries and energy-storage deployments are not sufficient indicators of financial performance. Revenue and profitability also depend on selling prices, product mix, costs, foreign exchange, and other factors. A serious assessment of the rebound therefore needs full quarterly financial results, regional sales data, margins, incentives, and product mix—not deliveries alone.

Founder-personality concentration creates brand risk
Tesla is an unusually personal brand. Musk’s public profile creates attention that benefits Tesla when the attention is favorable, but it can also transmit political controversy directly to the automaker. Tesla’s own disclosure about its dependence on Musk makes that connection more than a campaign slogan: it is a governance and investor-risk issue the company has acknowledged in its filings.

The risk is not limited to whether a protest changes one shopper’s mind. A highly personal brand can affect employee recruitment, customer loyalty, dealership traffic, investor sentiment, regulatory attention, and the willingness of existing owners to remain publicly associated with the company. The available evidence does not quantify each of those effects, but it explains why the protests attracted attention beyond the number of people standing outside a showroom.
The campaign’s tactic is powerful because it is concrete
Many political protests are aimed at institutions that feel distant from daily life. Tesla Takedown instead focuses on objects and places people can see: a car in a driveway, a dealership on a busy street, a charging location, or a ticker symbol in an investment account. That makes the message easier to understand and photograph, and it gives participants several ways to act without belonging to a single formal organization.
It also creates a measurement problem. A protest can generate extensive coverage without producing a measurable change in sales. A boycott can influence a buyer who never announces the reason, while another customer may buy a Tesla despite the controversy because of price, range, charging access, or a preferred model. Public demonstrations are therefore evidence of political pressure—not a standalone sales report.
What remains unresolved
- How active is the campaign now? The official site remains active, but the sources reviewed do not provide a current participation count or an independently audited measure of activity after the major 2025 actions.
- How much did each factor affect Tesla? The NBER working paper offers a substantial estimate for Musk’s partisan effect, but it does not isolate Tesla Takedown protests, boycotts, product aging, competition, and macroeconomic factors into a definitive company-wide loss figure.
- What does the 2026 rebound mean? The delivery increase needs to be tested against margins, regional performance, incentives, pricing, product mix, and complete financial results. It is evidence against a simple story of uninterrupted decline, not proof that brand damage was temporary.
- What happened in individual criminal cases? General protest coverage cannot substitute for court records or law-enforcement releases. The legal status and facts of each alleged arson, vandalism, threat, or vehicle attack should be checked separately.
How to read the Tesla Takedown story accurately
- Use “Tesla Takedown organizers say” when describing the campaign’s goals or grievances.
- Use “according to the movement’s website” for its peaceful-protest description, protest listings, merchandise, and calls to sell vehicles or stock.
- Use “police investigated,” “prosecutors charged,” or “court records show” only when a specific official source supports that wording.
- Do not imply that Tesla Takedown organized vandalism unless reliable evidence connects the campaign to a particular incident.
- Describe the NBER figures as an academic estimate of Musk’s partisan effect, not as audited losses or proof that protests alone caused Tesla’s sales decline.
- Put the 2026 delivery rebound next to the 2025 decline so readers do not mistake a snapshot for the entire business trend.
Evidence note: This account draws on Tesla Takedown’s public materials; reporting from NPR, The Washington Post, and The Guardian; Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K and quarterly delivery releases; and the 2025 NBER working paper by Gillingham, Kotchen, Levinsohn, and Nalebuff. The commercial figures and academic estimates are presented with their stated limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tesla Takedown responsible for vandalism and arson at Tesla locations?
Tesla Takedown’s public campaign describes itself as peaceful and promotes protests, boycotts, and divestment. Vandalism, arson, threats, and other attacks were reported separately, and the available evidence does not show that the campaign organized every such incident.
Did Tesla Takedown cause Tesla’s sales decline?
There is no public accounting that assigns a specific number of lost sales to the protests. A 2025 NBER working paper estimated a substantial negative effect from Musk’s partisan activity, while Tesla’s results were also affected by competition, model timing, pricing, interest rates, incentives, supply, and broader EV demand.

Did Tesla sales recover after the protests?
Tesla reported 384,122 deliveries in the second quarter of 2025, down 13% year over year. It later reported 480,126 deliveries in the second quarter of 2026. The rebound complicates a simple continuing-decline narrative, but deliveries alone do not establish profitability or erase possible brand damage.
Is Tesla Takedown still active?
The campaign’s official website remains active and directs visitors to protest locations, personal stories, and merchandise. However, the available reporting does not establish a current participation count or independently audited activity level after the major 2025 protest actions.
The Bottom Line
Tesla Takedown is best understood as a peaceful political campaign using Tesla’s unusually visible brand to pressure Musk, not as a catch-all label for every attack on Tesla property. The protests coincided with Tesla’s 2025 sales weakness, and research suggests Musk’s partisan activity hurt demand, but no evidence isolates the protests as the sole cause. Tesla’s reported 2026 delivery rebound shows the business story is changing even as questions about Musk, governance, competition, and lasting brand damage remain open.
