Tesla cut the U.S. price of its Full Self-Driving subscription from $199 to $99 per month on April 12, 2024. As of August 12, 2026, Tesla still lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month—but it is now a subscription-only driver-assistance service, not an outright software purchase. The driver must remain attentive and ready to take over.
The short version
Tesla cut the U.S. price of its Full Self-Driving subscription from $199 to $99 per month on April 12, 2024. The $99 price is still listed by Tesla as of August 12, 2026—but the more important update is that FSD (Supervised) is now presented as a subscription-only service in the United States. Tesla no longer lists an outright purchase option for the software.
At $99 per month, the subscription costs $1,188 per year before taxes and other charges. It adds advanced driver-assistance features such as navigation-related driving, lane changes, turns, parking, and maneuvering around vehicles and objects, depending on the Tesla’s configuration, software, region, model, trim, and model year.
It does not turn a Tesla into an autonomous vehicle. Tesla calls the product FSD (Supervised) for a reason: the driver must remain attentive, keep responsibility for the vehicle, and be ready to take over at all times.

What changed—and what did not
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| April 12, 2024 | Tesla reduced the U.S. monthly FSD subscription from $199 to $99. |
| January 14, 2026 | Reuters reported that Elon Musk said Tesla would stop selling FSD for a one-time payment after February 14, 2026. At the time, the reported alternatives were an $8,000 purchase or a $99 monthly subscription. |
| February 14, 2026 | The announced transition date passed. Tesla’s support documentation now says FSD (Supervised) is available only as a subscription, not for outright purchase. |
| March 31, 2026 | Tesla’s previous FSD transfer program ended. Qualifying customers had to take delivery of a new Tesla by that date; the program is no longer available. |
| August 12, 2026 | Tesla’s current offer information continues to list FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month for all Tesla models, with a 30-day trial for new vehicles subject to the offer’s terms. |
That timeline matters because headlines about a “$99 FSD price” can be misleading. Tesla did not first introduce the price in 2026. The reduction happened in 2024; the 2026 development was the end of the one-time purchase option and the end of the transfer program.
What the $99 Tesla FSD subscription includes
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as a collection of driving-assistance capabilities rather than a promise of autonomous transportation. Depending on the vehicle and local availability, the package can handle or assist with:
- Navigation-related driving on supported routes
- Lane changes
- Turns
- Parking
- Maneuvering around vehicles and objects
The exact feature set is not identical for every Tesla. Availability can depend on the vehicle’s hardware, model year, trim, software version, region, and regulatory approval. A vehicle may also need an over-the-air software update before the subscription can be activated or particular features can be used.
In practical terms, the subscription buys access to Tesla’s evolving software package. It does not guarantee that every advertised capability will be available immediately in every state or country, and Tesla can change both pricing and feature availability.

FSD (Supervised) is not autonomous driving
The word “Full” in Tesla’s product name should not be confused with fully automated driving. Tesla explicitly requires active driver supervision. The person in the driver’s seat must watch the road, remain able to intervene, and follow applicable traffic laws and Tesla’s instructions.
Do not treat the $99 subscription as permission to:
- Take your eyes off the road
- Use a phone or otherwise become distracted
- Sleep or leave the driver’s seat
- Assume the system will recognize and correctly handle every hazard
- Describe the vehicle as Level 4 or Level 5 autonomous transportation
NHTSA has investigated traffic-safety violations involving Tesla systems labeled FSD (Supervised) and FSD (Beta). In its investigation materials, NHTSA distinguishes Level 2 driver-support systems from fully automated driving: the driver remains responsible for supervising the system. That distinction is central to understanding what Tesla is selling.

How much does Tesla FSD cost over time?
The simple arithmetic is:
- Monthly: $99
- 12 months: $1,188 before taxes and other applicable charges
- 24 months: $2,376 before taxes and other applicable charges
- 36 months: $3,564 before taxes and other applicable charges
There is no annual FSD plan implied by those figures; $1,188 is merely the monthly price multiplied by 12.
For historical context, the former $8,000 outright price would have equaled about 80.8 months—or approximately 6.7 years—of $99 payments. That is only a break-even calculation. It does not account for taxes, financing, resale value, changes to the software, vehicle ownership, or the fact that Tesla no longer presents outright purchase as an available option.
The subscription is therefore potentially more attractive to someone who wants FSD for a limited period, such as a road trip or a short ownership period. A long-term owner might have preferred the former purchase model, but that comparison is now historical rather than a choice currently offered by Tesla in the United States.
How to subscribe
Tesla says owners can subscribe through either the Tesla mobile app or the vehicle’s touchscreen. For an in-app subscription, use the Tesla account that owns the vehicle.
- Open the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen.
- Find the software or upgrades section for the vehicle.
- Select the FSD (Supervised) subscription.
- Review the displayed price, terms, vehicle eligibility, and billing information.
- Complete the subscription and install any required over-the-air update.
The exact screen labels can change with Tesla app and vehicle software updates. If FSD does not appear, check that you are signed in to the owner account, that the vehicle is eligible, and that it has received the required software update.
Trials, cancellation, and refunds
Tesla’s current offer information says new Tesla vehicles receive a 30-day FSD (Supervised) trial, subject to terms and conditions. Offers can change or end, so buyers should verify the terms shown for their vehicle at the time of delivery.
Tesla says subscribers may cancel at any time, but access continues through the end of the current billing period. Tesla also says subscription refunds are unavailable. In other words, canceling immediately generally stops the next renewal; it does not create a prorated refund for the unused portion of the current month.

This suction phone cradle obtained CP65 / REACH / RoHS safety certifications
Before subscribing, check the renewal date and confirm whether taxes or other charges will be added. Because Tesla can change the subscription price and included features, do not assume that $99 is guaranteed permanently.
Can you transfer FSD to another Tesla?
Do not assume that a subscription—or the old purchased version of FSD—follows you to another vehicle or Tesla account. Tesla’s previous FSD transfer program ended on March 31, 2026. Customers who qualified under that program had to take delivery of a new Tesla by that date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTesla’s current documentation also ties a subscription to the vehicle owner’s Tesla account. If you sell the vehicle, change accounts, or buy another Tesla, check the current terms rather than assuming that your remaining subscription or prior purchase transfers automatically.
Could Tesla Insurance reduce the real cost?
Tesla Insurance offers an FSD-related premium or Safety Score benefit in certain states for customers who have purchased or subscribed to FSD (Supervised). Tesla’s listed states include:
Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
The benefit is not nationwide and is not automatically available to every Tesla owner in those states. Eligibility, timing, the calculation method, and the relevant coverage vary by state and policy. Tesla says some versions require at least five miles driven with FSD engaged during the applicable 30-day period, and says the FSD discount is capped at 10% on certain coverages.
That means the insurance benefit should not be treated as a guaranteed $99 offset. Compare the actual premium quote and policy terms before including a possible discount in your ownership budget.

One-month FSD gift cards
Tesla also documents a one-month FSD (Supervised) gift card. This can be relevant for an eligible Tesla owner who wants to test the software without immediately paying for a recurring month.
The recipient must own an eligible Tesla, use Tesla app version 4.51.1 or later, and must not have purchased FSD outright. When the gifted month ends, recurring billing resumes if the subscription remains active and the gift-card balance does not cover the next payment. Anyone giving or redeeming one should check the current terms and the account’s renewal settings.
Who should consider the $99 subscription?
The subscription is easiest to justify for drivers who value Tesla’s assisted navigation and automated driving features enough to use them regularly, but do not want to commit to a long-term software purchase—or who only want access for a limited period.

- Plan to buy the subscription solely because the name implies autonomy
A sensible test is to use the trial, if offered, and evaluate how often the features actually help on your normal routes. Measure the value against your real driving—not against the marketing name or the former $8,000 purchase price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Tesla moved toward a subscription
The pricing change is also a business decision. Tesla’s filings and investor materials describe FSD (Supervised) subscriptions as part of a broader software- and service-oriented strategy, alongside—but separate from—the company’s Robotaxi plans.
Tesla said in a January 2026 investor presentation that monthly FSD subscriptions continued to grow sequentially and more than doubled during 2025. That supports viewing the $99 price as part of a recurring-revenue strategy. It does not establish how many paying U.S. subscribers Tesla has or whether the subscription is profitable.
Robotaxi should not be conflated with the consumer FSD (Supervised) subscription. The latter remains a supervised driver-assistance product for a privately owned vehicle; it is not a consumer purchase of a fully autonomous ride service.

Bottom line for Tesla shoppers
Tesla’s U.S. FSD price is $99 per month as of August 12, 2026, but the key facts are more specific than the headline suggests: Tesla made the cut from $199 in April 2024, the software is now subscription-only rather than available for outright purchase, and the system still requires constant driver supervision.
Budget $1,188 per year before taxes if you keep it for 12 months. Treat any trial, insurance benefit, or feature list as conditional on the current terms, vehicle, software, location, and eligibility. The subscription can be a flexible way to try Tesla’s advanced driver assistance, but it is not a purchase of an autonomous car.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did Tesla lower FSD to $99 per month?
Tesla cut the U.S. FSD subscription from $199 to $99 per month on April 12, 2024. The $99 price remains listed as of August 12, 2026.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tesla FSD (Supervised) costs $99 per month in the U.S. as of August 12, 2026—down from $199 in April 2024—and is now subscription-only. It may suit drivers who want temporary or regularly used assistance features, but it does not provide autonomous or unattended driving.
