Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTesla did not remove every driver-assistance feature from every car. In January 2026, it discontinued the basic Autopilot offering for new vehicles in the United States and Canada. Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains the standard baseline, while Tesla is directing buyers who want broader steering and route-following functions toward its paid Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package.
The change is part product restructuring, part terminology cleanup, and part response to regulatory pressure. Existing owners are not all affected in the same way: feature access depends on the vehicle, model year, hardware, software version, and region. Neither legacy Autopilot nor FSD (Supervised) makes a Tesla autonomous.
The short answer: Autopilot was not deleted from every Tesla
The phrase “Tesla cancels Autopilot” describes two related but different developments:
- A product change: Tesla discontinued the basic Autopilot offering for new vehicles in the U.S. and Canada in January 2026.
- A marketing and naming change: Tesla stopped using “Autopilot” in California vehicle marketing after a California Department of Motor Vehicles proceeding found that the terminology could mislead consumers about the vehicles’ capabilities.
Those developments do not mean that all Teslas lost adaptive cruise control, lane assistance, or other safety functions through a remote software deletion. They also do not mean that Tesla abandoned automated-driving development. The company continues to promote FSD (Supervised), Robotaxi, and the future Cybercab—but those are not interchangeable products.

The most accurate description is: Tesla is moving away from the Autopilot label and the basic Autopilot package while preserving supervised driver assistance and emphasizing FSD subscriptions and longer-term autonomous-ride ambitions.
What new Tesla buyers get now
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains the baseline
For affected new vehicles, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains the core driver-assistance function. It is adaptive cruise control: the vehicle maintains a selected speed when possible and adjusts its speed to maintain a following distance from traffic ahead.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is not the same as the old Autopilot bundle. Tesla’s older terminology generally used “Autopilot” to describe Traffic-Aware Cruise Control together with Autosteer. Current vehicle availability can vary, so a buyer should not assume that the presence of adaptive cruise control automatically includes the same steering functions that older Tesla coverage called Autopilot.
FSD (Supervised) is the broader paid layer
Tesla describes Full Self-Driving (Supervised) as a suite that can, when available and appropriate for the vehicle and region, perform functions such as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- assisting with lane changes;
- following a navigation route;
- negotiating intersections; and
- making turns.
That is a broader set of functions than ordinary adaptive cruise control. It is also a paid software service rather than a declaration that the vehicle can drive without a human.
Tesla’s support page lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month in the United States and describes it as subscription-only rather than available for outright purchase at the time of publication. That price is time-sensitive, and Canadian pricing, taxes, availability, and vehicle eligibility can differ. Check Tesla’s current FSD documentation and the specific vehicle’s purchase screen before treating the price or feature list as final.
What this means at the dealership or configurator
A buyer who only wants a vehicle that maintains speed and distance may find Traffic-Aware Cruise Control sufficient. A buyer who expects lane-centering, automatic lane changes, navigation-based maneuvers, and turns should evaluate FSD (Supervised), its recurring cost, and the specific vehicle’s eligibility.
This changes the ownership calculation. Previously, many shoppers thought of Autopilot as a standard Tesla capability and FSD as the optional upgrade. The new packaging makes the distinction between the standard driving-assistance baseline and the paid software layer more important.

What existing Tesla owners should expect
There is no reliable basis for saying that every existing Tesla owner lost Autopilot. Feature entitlement varies according to:
- model and model year;
- vehicle hardware and camera configuration;
- software version;
- the market or region where the vehicle is operated; and
- what the owner originally purchased or currently subscribes to.
Tesla’s manuals and support materials still document Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, Autosteer, active-safety features, and FSD (Supervised). However, owners may see inconsistent terminology because older manuals, archived support pages, vehicle screens, and third-party articles still use “Autopilot,” while newer Tesla pages emphasize FSD (Supervised).
Do not infer your entitlement from a headline, a forum post, or another owner’s vehicle. Instead:
- Check the vehicle’s Software screen. On the touchscreen, open the vehicle’s software information area; the exact menu presentation can vary by software version.
- Look for the listed driver-assistance capabilities. Tesla says owners can inspect whether the vehicle has “Full Self-Driving Capability” and whether FSD (Supervised) software is installed.
- Check the Tesla account or app associated with the vehicle. Look for the vehicle’s purchased or subscribed features rather than relying on the word “Autopilot” in an older document.
- Confirm the vehicle’s hardware and region. A feature available on one model year or market may not be available on another.
- Read the current on-screen limitations. A feature label does not remove the driver’s duty to monitor the road and be ready to take over.
If the vehicle’s software screen, account information, and older purchase paperwork appear to conflict, Tesla support or a vehicle-specific service representative is the appropriate source for entitlement confirmation. Do not assume that a software update, subscription, or name change can add hardware-dependent capability.

Why Tesla moved away from the Autopilot name
California’s regulatory case
The clearest documented regulatory trigger came from California. On December 16, 2025, the California DMV adopted an administrative-law judge’s conclusion that Tesla’s use of “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving Capability” to describe advanced driver-assistance features was misleading and violated state law.
The DMV said the vehicles could not operate autonomously. Tesla was given an opportunity to avoid a 30-day dealer-license suspension by changing its terminology and marketing. On February 17, 2026, the DMV announced that Tesla had stopped using “Autopilot” in its California vehicle marketing and therefore avoided the suspension. The agency’s initial finding and its later corrective-action announcement establish a direct link between the naming change and regulatory compliance.
That does not prove that changing a badge or label by itself makes the system safer. It does show that regulators treat a driver’s understanding of the system’s limits as a safety and consumer-protection issue, not merely a branding preference.

Reporting on Tesla’s January 2026 product decision described the discontinuation of basic Autopilot for new U.S. and Canadian vehicles as part of an effort to encourage adoption of FSD. Concentrating lane assistance and broader route-following features in FSD also strengthens Tesla’s subscription business.

This suction phone cradle obtained CP65 / REACH / RoHS safety certifications
It is reasonable to interpret the change as both defensive and strategic:
- Defensive: Tesla is reducing reliance on terminology that California regulators found misleading.
- Strategic: Tesla is placing more attention and revenue emphasis on FSD (Supervised) subscriptions and its longer-term autonomy plans.
The second point is an inference from the timing, packaging, subscription positioning, and Tesla’s public autonomy materials—not a statement that Tesla has identified one single reason for the entire change. The product discontinuation was reported by TechCrunch in January 2026.
Autopilot, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, Autosteer, FSD, and Robotaxi are different things
Much of the confusion comes from using one phrase for several generations of Tesla products. The distinctions matter:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Term | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Autopilot | The historical Tesla brand or package commonly associated with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. | It was never a promise that the vehicle could operate without continuous driver supervision. |
| Traffic-Aware Cruise Control | Adaptive cruise control that manages speed and following distance. | It is not a complete lane-centering or autonomous-driving system. |
| Autosteer | Steering assistance that helps keep the vehicle within a lane when available and properly engaged. | It does not make the driver a passenger or eliminate the need to monitor the road. |
| FSD (Supervised) | A broader, paid Tesla driver-assistance suite that can handle additional supervised maneuvers, depending on configuration and region. | Despite its name, Tesla explicitly says it does not make the vehicle autonomous. |
| Robotaxi | A separate Tesla autonomous-ride-service initiative intended for limited service areas. | It is not the same product as consumer FSD (Supervised) in a privately owned Tesla. |
Tesla’s older explanation of Autopilot is useful historical context, but owners should use the current vehicle and account displays to determine what a particular car actually supports. Tesla’s older Autopilot documentation remains available in some regional support pages, including this archived-style explanation.
FSD (Supervised) is still Level 2-style driver assistance
The most important safety point has not changed: the driver remains responsible for the vehicle.
Tesla’s FSD documentation says the system requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. The driver must remain attentive, monitor the surroundings, and be able to resume control. The appropriate description is therefore “supervised driver assistance,” not “the Tesla drives itself.”
SAE’s driving-automation taxonomy distinguishes Level 2 partial driving automation from systems that can operate without continuous human supervision. At Level 2, the system may assist with steering and speed control, but the human driver must continuously supervise it and remain capable of taking control. The SAE J3016 taxonomy provides the relevant framework.
This is why phrases such as “Tesla is fully self-driving” are inaccurate when referring to consumer FSD (Supervised). A more precise description is: Tesla’s supervised driver-assistance system controlled steering, acceleration, braking, or route-related maneuvers while the driver remained responsible for immediate intervention.

Do not defeat driver-monitoring warnings
NHTSA investigation materials concerning Tesla’s 2023 recall remedy raised concerns about mode confusion, inadvertent activation, driver disengagement, alert prominence, and the need for drivers to resume immediate control when Autosteer is canceled. The agency’s materials are available in its investigation document.
That is also why owners should not use weights, devices, or other products marketed to defeat Tesla’s steering-wheel or driver-monitoring warnings. NHTSA specifically deemed the “Autopilot Buddy” product unsafe because it disables or defeats a safety feature. The agency’s consumer advisory explains the concern.
How to interpret Tesla’s safety claims
Tesla publishes a Vehicle Safety Report and makes safety comparisons involving FSD (Supervised). Those figures should be read as manufacturer-reported claims, not as independent proof that FSD is safer in every road, weather, traffic, or driver context.
One methodological detail is especially important: Tesla says it counts a collision as involving FSD (Supervised) when the system was active at any point during the five seconds before the event. That definition affects how the results should be interpreted. It does not by itself establish causation, and it does not show that a collision would have occurred—or would not have occurred—without the system.
Tesla’s current FSD page claims fewer collisions when FSD (Supervised) is engaged. Attribute that statement to Tesla, and do not rewrite it as an independently validated universal safety conclusion. Tesla’s methodology and report are available through its Vehicle Safety Report.

The new packaging makes driver-assistance features a more consequential purchase question. Before ordering, ask:
- What do I actually need? Adaptive cruise control is a different need from lane-centering or navigation-based assistance.
- Is the feature included or subscription-based? Confirm the current price, billing arrangement, and whether outright purchase is available in the relevant market.
- Is the vehicle eligible? Check model year, hardware, software version, trim, and region.
- What remains if the paid package is not active? Ask Tesla for the current feature list rather than relying on an old Autopilot description.
- Am I comfortable with recurring software costs? A monthly subscription can change the long-term cost of ownership compared with a one-time option.
- Do I understand the supervision requirement? No feature label changes the driver’s legal and practical responsibility for the vehicle.
Comparisons with other automakers should be made on the actual functions and operating conditions, not on the labels “Autopilot” or “self-driving.” The useful comparison is among adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, hands-off operation where legally permitted, driver monitoring, navigation assistance, limitations, and subscription terms. The available research does not provide a current, apples-to-apples independent ranking of competing systems, so it would be misleading to declare a universal winner here.

- Consumer vehicles: monetize increasingly capable but supervised assistance through FSD (Supervised), including subscriptions.
- Autonomous services: develop Robotaxi operations and a future purpose-built Cybercab for a more autonomous service experience in defined areas.
Tesla’s investor materials distinguish active driver supervision from autonomy and describe plans for Robotaxi expansion. The company’s public service information also presents Robotaxi as geographically limited rather than a nationwide replacement for consumer driving. Its January 2026 investor filing is the relevant primary source for the company’s stated plans.
The Autopilot change therefore should not be treated as evidence that Tesla has reached Level 3, Level 4, or Level 5 autonomy. It is evidence of a shift in product packaging and terminology while Tesla continues pursuing a separate autonomy business. Whether that business expands as planned is a future question; the current consumer FSD product still requires supervision.
What “cancels Autopilot” does—and does not—mean
| Question | Accurate answer |
|---|---|
| Did Tesla abandon driver assistance? | No. Tesla continues to document Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, Autosteer, active-safety features, and FSD (Supervised), subject to vehicle and regional availability. |
| Did every Tesla owner lose Autopilot? | No. Access varies by vehicle, hardware, software, model year, original purchase, subscription, and region. |
| Did Tesla abandon autonomous-driving ambitions? | No. Tesla continues to promote FSD (Supervised), Robotaxi, and Cybercab plans, although consumer FSD remains supervised and Robotaxi service is geographically limited. |
| Is FSD (Supervised) fully self-driving? | No. Tesla says the driver must remain attentive and responsible for control. |
| Was this only a name change? | No. California’s formal remedy concerned the use of the name, while reporting indicates that Tesla also discontinued the basic Autopilot product for new U.S. and Canadian vehicles. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Tesla remove Autopilot from all existing vehicles?
No. The January 2026 change concerns the basic Autopilot offering for affected new vehicles in the United States and Canada. Existing-vehicle access varies by model, model year, hardware, software version, purchase history, subscription, and region.
What driver assistance remains standard on affected new Teslas?
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains the baseline function. It adjusts speed and following distance but should not be treated as equivalent to the broader steering and route-following functions associated with FSD (Supervised).
Is Tesla FSD (Supervised) autonomous?
No. Tesla explicitly says FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous. The driver must continuously supervise the system, remain attentive, and be ready to take control.
How much does FSD (Supervised) cost?
Tesla’s U.S. support page listed FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month and described it as subscription-only at the time of publication. Prices and availability can change, and Canadian terms may differ.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tesla has not switched off every assisted-driving feature. It has retired the basic Autopilot offering for affected new U.S. and Canadian vehicles, reduced reliance on a name regulators found misleading, and pushed broader supervised assistance into FSD’s paid software layer. Existing owners should verify their individual vehicle’s entitlement, and every driver should treat both legacy Autopilot and FSD (Supervised) as Level 2-style assistance—not autonomous driving.
