The sixth generation is current for the 2026 model year and adds the most substantial technology expansion yet, including a U.S. hybrid option, while retaining standard all-wheel drive and the Forester’s upright, practical crossover layout.
The model has evolved continuously rather than changing identity every few years. Its original combination of car-like road manners, elevated seating, cargo flexibility, ground clearance, and all-weather capability remains visible in today’s Forester; the major additions have been space, safety systems, platform rigidity, infotainment, driver monitoring, hybrid power, and Wilderness equipment.
Subaru Forester generations at a glance
| Generation | U.S. model years | Original launch reference | Main significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 1998–2002 | Japan, February 1997 | Established the car-like, upright, all-wheel-drive crossover formula. |
| Second | 2003–2008 | Japan, February 2002 | Refined the original concept with more maturity, space, and equipment. |
| Third | 2009–2013 | Japan, December 2007 | Moved toward a larger, more conventional SUV shape and broader family appeal. |
| Fourth | 2014–2018 | Japan, November 2012 | Added more sophisticated safety technology and stronger SUV practicality. |
| Fifth | 2019–2024 in the regular U.S. lineup | U.S. reveal, 2018 New York International Auto Show | Introduced Subaru Global Platform, newer driver assistance, and the Wilderness branch. |
| Sixth | 2025–present | U.S. reveal, November 2023 | Added a major cabin and technology update, a stiffer chassis, and a U.S. hybrid option. |
The Forester is best understood as one continuously developed vehicle rather than six unrelated SUVs. Subaru has kept the central formula intact since the beginning: a compact footprint, elevated seating, useful ground clearance, flexible cargo space, passenger-car road manners, and an all-wheel-drive identity. What changed over time was the level of refinement, safety technology, structural rigidity, powertrain choice, and specialization for outdoor use.
The ranges above are the practical U.S. model-year ranges. Subaru’s Japanese and global launch dates do not always line up with American model years, and engine, transmission, safety, and trim availability can differ substantially by market. A generation label is a useful starting point for research, but it is not a substitute for checking the exact year, trim, engine, transmission, VIN, and equipment on the vehicle you are considering.

What the original Forester was designed to be
Subaru introduced the Forester in Japan in February 1997 and brought it to the United States for the 1998 model year. The original concept combined useful characteristics of an SUV and a passenger car. It offered a higher seating position and SUV-like utility without the bulk and truck-based character associated with traditional sport-utility vehicles.
Subaru’s original Japanese material described approximately 200 millimeters of ground clearance and a compact package based on the company’s existing small-car architecture. That figure should be treated as a reference for the original Japanese vehicle, not as a universal ground-clearance specification for every first-generation Forester sold worldwide.
This crossover positioning explains why the Forester has remained recognizable across six generations. It was never simply a lifted wagon, although its road manners and cargo flexibility helped create that impression. Nor was it a conventional body-on-frame SUV. The vehicle was designed to make everyday driving, passenger access, visibility, cargo carrying, and light off-road use work together in one relatively compact package.
First generation: 1998–2002
The original crossover formula
The first-generation Forester established nearly every trait that later buyers would associate with the name. Its upright body made it easier to see out of than many low passenger cars, while its compact dimensions kept it manageable in town. The raised ride height and all-wheel-drive character gave it useful confidence on snow, gravel, dirt roads, and uneven surfaces without requiring a large SUV.
The important update here was conceptual rather than technological. Subaru created a vehicle for people who wanted more utility than a conventional car but did not necessarily want the size, weight, or driving feel of a traditional SUV. Flexible cargo space and an upright cabin supported daily use, while the car-derived architecture helped preserve approachable road manners.
Turbocharged Forester performance versions existed in selected markets. They should not be treated as evidence that every U.S.-market first-generation Forester had the same engine or performance equipment. Import specifications, trim names, transmission choices, and safety equipment must be checked separately when researching a non-U.S. vehicle.
Why this generation matters: It created the Forester’s enduring identity: visible, practical, all-weather transportation with enough ground clearance and utility for light adventure.
Second generation: 2003–2008
Maturing without abandoning the mission
Subaru’s corporate history identifies the second-generation Forester as beginning in February 2002, corresponding to the 2003 U.S. model year. This redesign refined the first-generation idea rather than replacing it with a fundamentally different type of vehicle.

The second generation brought a more developed body, updated packaging, and changes to powertrain and equipment offerings over the life of the generation. Buyers in different markets could encounter naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and different safety and convenience features. Those variations make it especially important not to transfer a Japanese, European, Australian, or other market’s specification sheet directly to a U.S. vehicle.
In practical terms, this is the Forester’s maturation era. The vehicle remained compact and recognizably upright, but it became more polished and more usable as a daily driver. Passenger space, cabin comfort, equipment levels, and the overall sense of development moved forward while the core combination of all-wheel-drive capability and wagon-like practicality remained.
Why this generation matters: It made the original formula more complete and broadly appealing without losing the compact, functional character that distinguished the Forester from larger SUVs.

Third generation: 2009–2013
A larger and more conventional SUV direction
The third-generation Forester debuted in Japan in December 2007 and reached U.S. dealers as a 2009 model. Subaru described the new vehicle as a crossover SUV designed around comfort, performance, versatility, safety, and everyday active lifestyles.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRelative to the boxier, more wagon-like look of earlier Foresters, the third generation moved toward a larger and more conventionally SUV-shaped body. That change broadened the vehicle’s family appeal. Passenger comfort and usable interior space became more prominent, and the Forester was easier to view as a primary family vehicle rather than an enthusiast-oriented crossover with extra practicality.
The basic compromise remained familiar: the Forester was intended to be comfortable on pavement but useful when roads became rough, snowy, or unpaved. The shift was one of emphasis. More buyers could choose it for family transportation and cargo space without giving up Subaru’s all-weather positioning.
Powertrain coverage varied widely by region during this generation. Naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, diesel offerings in some markets, manual transmissions, automatic transmissions, and other equipment combinations were not universal. A used buyer should verify the engine code, transmission, emissions configuration, and market of origin instead of assuming that every 2009–2013 Forester shares one mechanical specification.
Why this generation matters: It broadened the Forester from a distinctive compact crossover into a more family-oriented SUV while retaining useful ground clearance and all-wheel-drive capability.

Fourth generation: 2014–2018
More capability, refinement, and advanced safety
Subaru launched the fourth generation in Japan in November 2012, followed by the U.S.-market 2014 Forester. The company’s launch description emphasized improvements in driving performance, safety, environmental performance, SUV capability, utility, and ease of use.
This generation strengthened the Forester’s position as a genuine compact SUV. It continued to provide the upright seating, cargo usefulness, and all-weather traction that defined the name, but the vehicle’s presentation became more modern and its range offered a clearer split between practical mainstream versions and performance-oriented choices.
In the United States, the turbocharged Forester 2.0XT provided the performance-focused alternative. Naturally aspirated models concentrated on everyday practicality and efficiency. That distinction is useful when shopping because two fourth-generation Foresters can have noticeably different powertrain and equipment characteristics even though they share the same generation label.
Driver assistance also became a more important part of the Forester story during this period. Subaru’s EyeSight system was market-dependent, and its availability, hardware, and rollout should be verified for the specific country and model year. It is not safe to assume that a U.S. Forester has the same EyeSight equipment as a Japanese-market vehicle.
Why this generation matters: It combined a more complete compact-SUV package with more sophisticated safety and performance choices, making the Forester increasingly competitive as a family crossover.
Fifth generation: 2019–2024
Subaru Global Platform and a technology transition
Subaru unveiled the all-new U.S.-spec 2019 Forester at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The fifth generation was the first Forester built on Subaru Global Platform, making the change underneath the body at least as important as the styling change visible from outside.

Subaru highlighted improved collision safety, hazard avoidance, handling, comfort, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, enhanced X-Mode, EyeSight, and a new direct-injection 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. The generation also introduced Subaru’s Driver Monitoring System, an important expansion of the vehicle’s electronic safety and driver-awareness technology.
The fifth-generation Forester did not abandon the proportions that had made the name useful. Visibility, passenger room, cargo practicality, standard all-wheel-drive positioning, and useful clearance remained central. Instead, the platform and electronic systems became more modern while the vehicle’s basic shape and purpose evolved conservatively.

Where Wilderness fits
The Wilderness trim arrived during the fifth-generation era and created a more explicitly rugged branch of the lineup. It broadened the Forester’s outdoor-use positioning beyond the standard model by emphasizing equipment and capability for buyers who place more value on rough-road use, outdoor gear, and distinctive appearance.
The 2024 model year was the end of the ordinary fifth-generation U.S. lineup. The transition can be confusing because model-year references identify a prior-generation Wilderness carryover during the changeover. In other words, the year printed on a registration or sales listing does not always tell you which body generation you are looking at. Confirm the body, trim, and VIN before ordering parts or comparing features.
Why this generation matters: It delivered the Forester’s most important structural and safety modernization before the sixth-generation redesign, while preserving the familiar practical crossover formula.
Sixth generation: 2025–present
A more substantial redesign with hybrid power in the U.S.
Subaru revealed the all-new 2025 Forester in November 2023 and identified it as the sixth-generation SUV. The redesign brought new exterior and interior styling, a chassis described as 10 percent stiffer, improved ride quality, standard EyeSight, and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for the U.S. model.
Cabin technology also moved forward. An available 11.6-inch STARLINK multimedia system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an available hands-free power rear gate made the sixth generation feel more current in daily use. These are equipment-level distinctions, so the presence of a feature still depends on trim and model year.
The U.S. gasoline lineup uses a 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER four-cylinder. The sixth generation also adds a U.S. hybrid option. Subaru’s U.S. specifications identify a series-parallel hybrid system, a permanent-magnet electric motor, an estimated 194 total system horsepower, and hybrid fuel-economy figures reaching 34 city and 35 highway mpg depending on trim.
Those figures are not a universal sixth-generation specification. U.S. hybrid availability, trim content, and fuel-economy ratings should be checked against the exact model year and trim. They also should not be applied to Japanese or other global Foresters automatically.
U.S. and Japanese sixth-generation differences
The global sixth-generation story is not identical in every market. Subaru’s 2025 Japanese announcement lists a 2.5-liter strong-hybrid powertrain and a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo engine, along with expanded camera and radar hardware and EyeSight X availability in Japan. These details belong to the Japanese-market announcement and should not be presented as standard equipment or powertrain choices on U.S. vehicles.
This is one of the clearest examples of why geography matters in a generation guide. A Japanese-market specification may describe technology that is unavailable in the United States, while the U.S. lineup may offer a hybrid configuration that is not represented in a particular overseas model list.

2026 U.S. Forester snapshot
As of August 12, 2026, Subaru’s U.S. Forester range includes gasoline, hybrid, and Wilderness variants. Official 2026 materials cite standard all-wheel drive, up to 9.3 inches of ground clearance, available 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen technology, and wireless smartphone integration.
The 2026 U.S. materials also describe a six-trim gasoline lineup. Exact trim names, pricing, destination charges, incentives, inventory, and hybrid availability are volatile and should be checked directly before publication or purchase. The presence of a Wilderness model does not mean every Forester has Wilderness clearance, suspension tuning, tires, protection equipment, or exterior treatment.

The two biggest transition points
Fifth generation: the platform change
The fifth generation’s defining engineering change was the move to Subaru Global Platform. That change supported Subaru’s claims about collision safety, hazard avoidance, handling, comfort, and structural development. It also provides a useful dividing line when comparing used Foresters: a fifth-generation vehicle is not merely a facelifted fourth-generation vehicle with a different dashboard.
The technology transition was equally significant. EyeSight became a much more prominent part of the U.S. Forester’s safety equipment, the vehicle gained a Driver Monitoring System, and the 2.5-liter direct-injection boxer engine modernized the mainstream powertrain offering. Exact equipment still varies by model year and trim.
Sixth generation: the powertrain and cabin expansion
The sixth generation is a more visible redesign. Its 10 percent stiffer chassis, revised cabin, available larger touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, hands-free rear gate, and standard U.S. EyeSight and all-wheel drive collectively make it feel newer than a typical mid-cycle update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe U.S. hybrid option is the clearest powertrain break from the prior U.S. lineup. It does not mean every sixth-generation Forester is a hybrid, and it does not make older Foresters mechanically interchangeable with newer ones. Hybrid-specific components, calibration, service procedures, and parts must be matched to the exact vehicle.
Used Subaru Forester buying checklist
Use the generation as a research shortcut, not as a verdict on a particular vehicle. Facelifts, engine changes, trim additions, safety-system rollouts, infotainment revisions, recalls, and regional equipment changes can occur within a single generation.
- Confirm the exact model year. A 2008 vehicle belongs to the second U.S. generation, while a 2009 vehicle begins the third. A 2013 belongs to the third, while a 2014 begins the fourth. These year boundaries matter when ordering parts and comparing equipment.
- Confirm the trim and engine. Turbocharged, naturally aspirated, performance-focused, Wilderness, gasoline, and hybrid versions can have different maintenance requirements and hardware. Do not identify a vehicle only by its body style or badge.
- Check the VIN and market of origin. A vehicle imported from another country may have a different engine, transmission, emissions system, safety package, or parts catalog than a U.S.-market example from the same calendar year.
- Check open safety recalls. For a U.S. vehicle, use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN recall lookup as the authoritative starting point. Recall remedies are generally performed without charge, but the VIN result should be supplemented by confirmation with a Subaru dealer when necessary.
- Review service records. Look for documentation that identifies the work performed, mileage, parts used, and the vehicle’s engine and transmission. A generation label does not tell you whether routine maintenance was completed.
- Test the technology, not just the engine. On later Foresters, verify that the driver-assistance warnings, cameras, touchscreen, smartphone integration, driver-monitoring functions, power liftgate, and other equipment operate normally. A missing or malfunctioning sensor can affect more than convenience.
- Inspect the underbody and exterior for use-related damage. Ground clearance and all-wheel-drive capability can encourage owners to use a Forester on rough roads. Check for impact damage, bent components, corrosion, poorly repaired modifications, and evidence of water intrusion.
- Confirm accessory fitment before buying. Roof carriers, crossbars, cargo nets, bike equipment, floor protection, lighting, and replacement parts may be generation-, year-, trim-, roof-system-, or hitch-specific. A product that fits one Forester is not automatically correct for another.
Why a generation-specific repair manual matters
Forester engines, transmissions, electrical systems, driver-assistance hardware, specifications, and service procedures changed over the vehicle’s six-generation history. Even when two vehicles look similar, their diagnostic procedures and replacement parts may be different.
A Subaru Forester repair manual can be useful for a buyer or owner who wants maintenance specifications and repair procedures in one reference, but the coverage must match the vehicle. Haynes lists print and online Forester manuals covering ranges including 2000–2008 and 2009–2016. Those ranges do not automatically cover every 1998–1999, 2017–2026, turbocharged, hybrid, or market-specific vehicle, so check the manual’s exact year and engine coverage before ordering.

A manual is a reference, not a substitute for the factory service information required for advanced diagnostics, high-voltage hybrid work, restraint systems, or driver-assistance calibration. Forester cargo and outdoor accessories: check fitment first
The Forester’s utility has always been one of its strongest through-lines. Subaru accessory catalogs document cargo nets, roof carriers, crossbars, bike equipment, and other fitment-specific products. These can make the vehicle more useful, but the roof system and load-support hardware must be matched before purchase.
If you are shopping for a Forester roof cargo carrier, first identify the model year, generation, trim, roof rails, and compatible crossbar set. Some roof cargo products require crossbars that are not included with the vehicle. Verify the carrier’s mounting method, weight limits, clearance, and the vehicle’s owner-manual limits rather than assuming that a universal-looking product is safe or compatible.
The same rule applies to genuine Subaru Forester accessories and replacement parts. Genuine parts and accessories are designed around a specific year, model, and trim, but even a Subaru-branded product may have a limited fitment range. Confirm the part number or fitment listing before ordering cargo nets, windshield sunshades, filters, lighting, floor protection, hitch equipment, or other items.
Recall checks and vehicle-history reports
A recall lookup and a vehicle-history report answer different questions. The free NHTSA VIN tool is the essential U.S. safety check for unrepaired safety recalls. A paid used Forester vehicle-history report may be useful as a supplemental source for recorded ownership, title, mileage, accident, or auction information, but it should never replace a physical inspection, service-record review, or the official recall lookup.
History databases can be incomplete, especially when repairs were paid for privately or records were never reported. Treat a clean report as one piece of evidence rather than proof that a used Forester has never been damaged or neglected.
Which Forester generation is right for you?
- Choose the first generation if your interest is in the original compact crossover concept and you are prepared to research an older vehicle’s condition, parts availability, and market-specific equipment carefully.
- Consider the second generation if you want the mature version of the original formula and are comfortable comparing naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations by market.
- Look at the third generation if passenger comfort, family usability, and a more conventional SUV shape matter more than the earliest Forester’s wagon-like character.
- Consider the fourth generation if you want a newer compact-SUV package with available performance-oriented equipment and increasing access to driver-assistance technology.
- Choose the fifth generation if Subaru Global Platform, a modern 2.5-liter U.S. powertrain, EyeSight, Driver Monitoring System, and the Wilderness branch are priorities without moving to the latest redesign.
- Choose the sixth generation if you want the newest U.S. cabin and chassis, standard AWD and EyeSight, available 11.6-inch multimedia technology, wireless smartphone integration, or the U.S. hybrid option.
There is no responsible universal best or worst Forester year based on the generation label alone. Condition, maintenance history, recall completion, exact powertrain, trim, previous use, and purchase price can matter more than the broad generation category.
Bottom line
The Subaru Forester evolved from a compact, car-like all-wheel-drive crossover into a more refined and technologically advanced family SUV without abandoning its original purpose. The first generation established the formula; the second matured it; the third expanded its family appeal; the fourth added stronger SUV and safety credentials; the fifth introduced Subaru Global Platform, EyeSight prominence, Driver Monitoring System, and Wilderness; and the sixth added a stiffer chassis, newer cabin technology, and a U.S. hybrid powertrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Subaru Forester generation years?
In the United States, the first-generation Forester covers 1998–2002, the second 2003–2008, the third 2009–2013, the fourth 2014–2018, the fifth 2019–2024, and the sixth 2025–present. Japanese and global launch dates can differ from U.S. model years.
Which Subaru Forester generation is a hybrid?
The sixth-generation U.S. Forester introduced a hybrid option. Subaru’s U.S. specifications list a series-parallel hybrid system, 194 estimated total system horsepower, and fuel-economy figures reaching 34 city and 35 highway mpg depending on trim. Not every sixth-generation Forester is a hybrid.
Is the 2025 Subaru Forester fifth or sixth generation?
The 2025 regular U.S. Forester is sixth generation. The transition can be confusing because a prior-generation Wilderness carryover appeared during the model-year changeover. Check the VIN, body generation, and trim rather than relying on the calendar year alone.
How do I check a used Forester for recalls?
For a U.S. vehicle, start with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN recall lookup, then confirm results with a Subaru dealer if necessary. Also review service records and arrange a physical inspection. A paid vehicle-history report is supplemental and does not replace the official recall check.
Are all Subaru Foresters in one generation mechanically identical?
No. Engines, transmissions, turbo availability, EyeSight equipment, infotainment, trims, recalls, and other features can vary by model year, market, and trim within the same generation. Verify the VIN and exact specifications before buying parts or a repair manual.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Forester has remained a practical, all-wheel-drive crossover through six generations, but its engines, safety systems, platforms, trims, and accessory fitment can change within each generation. Match any buying, repair, recall, or accessory decision to the exact model year, trim, engine, transmission, and VIN.
