Hyundai’s plan to bring wireless Apple CarPlay to more vehicles was real—but the June 2023 report was a forward-looking rollout announcement, not a promise to upgrade every Hyundai. Newer applicable 2025 and 2026 vehicles later received broader factory support, while older owners still need to verify their exact infotainment system and update eligibility.
Hyundai’s plan to expand wireless Apple CarPlay was real, but the original June 2023 report was a forecast—not a promise that every Hyundai would receive the feature. The company initially pointed to newer vehicles, including the second-generation Kona EV and selected 2024 model-year products. Later Hyundai material shows that wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard across applicable revised 2025 models and remained listed for applicable 2026 vehicles.
That distinction matters for owners. A newer Hyundai may have factory wireless CarPlay, while an older vehicle with wired CarPlay may still be limited by its infotainment hardware, software configuration, trim, and market. Hyundai’s later software updates improve the experience on specified vehicles, but they do not establish that every older Hyundai can be converted through an update.

The original report, published on June 27, 2023, described Hyundai’s plan to add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to more vehicles equipped with integrated factory navigation. At the time, Hyundai’s rollout was still prospective. Some new-generation Kona vehicles delivered before the fourth quarter of 2023 might have been eligible for an update, according to the report, but compatibility for other recent models was considered much less certain. The report did not establish a universal software upgrade for all Hyundai vehicles already on the road.
Why Hyundai’s CarPlay support was so inconsistent
Hyundai’s historical configuration was counterintuitive: vehicles with integrated factory navigation often supported only wired CarPlay, while some less expensive versions without built-in navigation supported both wired and wireless CarPlay.
In practical terms, a smaller-screen or lower-trim Hyundai could offer a more convenient phone-projection experience than a higher trim with factory navigation. Owners of navigation-equipped vehicles had to connect an iPhone by USB even though the vehicle’s infotainment system was more expensive and more feature-rich in other respects.
The 2023 report also relayed an explanation involving the navigation shortcut button and whether it should prioritize Hyundai’s built-in navigation system or smartphone-mirroring software. That explanation came from the report’s cited source; it should not be treated as a separately confirmed official Hyundai statement.
Which Hyundai vehicles were expected to get wireless CarPlay?
The initial expectation centered on newer Hyundai vehicles, particularly:

The important qualifier was—and remains—selected. Model year alone is not enough to determine compatibility. Trim level, factory navigation, infotainment hardware, software version, country or market, and the vehicle identification number may all affect eligibility.
Hyundai’s later model-year documents clarify the rollout
Hyundai’s official 2025 model-year change document confirms a broader change from the earlier configuration. Previously, 2024 vehicles without navigation could have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while navigation-equipped versions were limited to wired connections. For applicable revised models, Hyundai changed that arrangement so wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard.
Hyundai’s 2026 model-year overview likewise lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among the technology and connectivity features for applicable 2026 vehicles. This is substantially clearer than the 2023 announcement, but it still does not mean that every Hyundai sold in every country, model, or trim includes wireless CarPlay. Buyers should verify the exact equipment list for the vehicle they are considering.
Hyundai’s 2026 software update improves activation on supported vehicles
Hyundai’s July 8, 2026 software-update notice describes an “Improved CarPlay Activation in Device List” feature. When a driver connects CarPlay wirelessly for the first time, the CarPlay icon remains visible in the vehicle’s device list and can be activated with one tap.
The notice includes a specific list of supported model ranges, including selected Ioniq, Kona, Palisade, Santa Cruz, and Santa Fe variants. That list demonstrates why owners should check the complete update information rather than assume that an entire model family—or every trim within it—is covered.

Being listed on the update page also does not automatically prove that every vehicle in that family is gaining wireless CarPlay. Hyundai’s feature applicability and the model-specific coverage must be considered together. An update may improve wireless CarPlay activation on a vehicle that already has the required capability without adding wireless functionality to hardware that was designed only for wired CarPlay.

Sometimes, but there is no general answer. A software update can enable or improve wireless CarPlay only when the vehicle’s infotainment hardware and system configuration support the feature. Hyundai’s update documentation is model-specific, and its owner documentation describes wireless phone projection as available only on systems that support wireless connectivity.
Before expecting an update to add the feature, check:
- Model year: Confirm the exact production or model year, not merely the date you purchased the vehicle.
- Model and trim: Compare the exact trim and equipment package with Hyundai’s update and specification information.
- Infotainment system: Determine whether the vehicle has factory navigation and which head unit it uses.
- Market: Hyundai equipment can differ by country and region.
- Current software: Check Hyundai’s official software-update system and the owner documentation for the vehicle.
- Existing CarPlay behavior: Verify whether wired CarPlay already works. This is particularly important if considering an adapter.
How factory wireless CarPlay works
Wireless CarPlay is different from simply plugging an iPhone into a USB port. Apple’s setup requirements call for a compatible wireless vehicle system and enabled wireless connectivity, including the relevant Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functions. The vehicle must also have CarPlay settings that support wireless pairing.
Hyundai’s owner documentation describes pairing the iPhone through the vehicle’s phone-projection device list. The iPhone must support wireless Apple CarPlay, and the Hyundai infotainment system must support the wireless connection. If either side lacks the necessary capability, changing a setting or installing a routine navigation update will not necessarily create it.

What owners can do if their Hyundai has wired CarPlay only
1. Check for an official Hyundai update first
Use Hyundai’s official software-update information and search using the exact vehicle details. Do not rely solely on a forum post or a claim that another vehicle with the same badge received an update. Confirm the applicable model, trim or system, region, and feature description.
2. Test the existing wired connection
If wired CarPlay does not work, solve that issue before considering wireless hardware. Try a known-good data-capable USB cable, the vehicle’s specified USB port, a supported iPhone, and the required CarPlay permissions. A wireless accessory generally cannot add CarPlay to a vehicle that has no working CarPlay support at all.
3. Consider a wireless CarPlay adapter
For a Hyundai that already supports wired CarPlay but does not offer the factory wireless version, a wireless CarPlay adapter may be the relevant accessory. These devices generally use the vehicle’s existing wired CarPlay connection and create a wireless bridge for the iPhone.
Compatibility is not universal. Check that the adapter specifically supports the Hyundai’s existing wired CarPlay system, USB behavior, iPhone version, and infotainment configuration. An adapter should not be presented as a way to add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks wired CarPlay, nor is it necessary for a newer Hyundai that already includes factory wireless CarPlay.
Hyundai’s broader infotainment direction
Hyundai Motor Group’s Pleos Connect announcement, issued on April 30, 2026, provides longer-term context. Hyundai described Pleos Connect as a next-generation infotainment platform with over-the-air feature and performance updates. The phased global rollout was scheduled to begin with the Grandeur in Korea, with the group planning to deploy the platform across approximately 20 million Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles by 2030.

That strategy suggests Hyundai is moving toward more software-defined infotainment, but Pleos Connect alone does not prove that every vehicle using the platform will include wireless Apple CarPlay. CarPlay availability still needs to be confirmed in the specifications for the specific vehicle and market.
Bottom line for Hyundai shoppers and owners
Hyundai’s 2023 plan to expand wireless CarPlay was genuine, but it began as a limited and uncertain rollout focused on newer vehicles. Official 2025 and 2026 model-year documents show that wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became much more broadly available on applicable newer Hyundai models.
For an existing vehicle, do not assume that a software update will add wireless CarPlay. Check the exact model year, trim, infotainment system, market, and update eligibility. If the Hyundai already has working wired CarPlay but no supported factory wireless option, a compatible wireless CarPlay adapter is the most relevant physical workaround.
