Nissan’s Comeback Is Underway: TDS

Nissan’s results show progress, not proof of a durable comeback: FY2025 operating profit came with a large net loss, while its FY2026 Q1 profit included a one-time tariff-related contribution.

Nissan has made measurable progress under its Re:Nissan plan, but the latest results do not yet prove a completed or durable comeback. For the year ended March 31, 2026, the automaker returned to operating profit while recording a large net loss and negative full-year automotive free cash flow. Its first quarter of FY2026 was profitable, but included a one-time contribution related to U.S. tariffs. The acronym “TDS” is not explained in Nissan’s official materials, so its meaning remains unclear.

What Nissan’s latest results show

Nissan’s FY2025 results show improvement in one important measure, not a broad return to profitability. For the year ended March 31, 2026, the company reported ¥12.0 trillion in revenue, 3.15 million global vehicle sales, ¥58.0 billion in operating profit and a 0.5% operating margin. It also reported a ¥533.1 billion net loss. These figures come from Nissan’s FY2025 results release (Nissan investor results).

Cash flow adds another qualification. Automotive free cash flow was negative ¥480.8 billion for FY2025 as a whole, although it turned positive at ¥112 billion in the second half. Nissan reported ¥1.17 trillion in automotive net cash at year-end. The half-year improvement is encouraging, but it does not cancel the full-year deficit; net income and automotive free cash flow are also different measures.

FY2026 first quarter

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Nissan reported revenue of ¥2.9642 trillion, operating profit of ¥77.9 billion, a 2.6% operating margin and net income of ¥3.8 billion. The same quarter a year earlier had an operating loss of ¥79.1 billion and a net loss of ¥115.8 billion. Nissan said manufacturing and vehicle-cost reductions, foreign exchange, sales performance and cost management contributed to the improvement, while also noting that one-time gains related to FY2025 U.S. tariffs contributed to operating profit. The figures and explanation are from Nissan’s FY2026 first-quarter update.

What Re:Nissan is changing

Re:Nissan is a restructuring and product strategy, not simply a push to sell more cars. Nissan describes its priorities as reducing costs, refocusing products and markets, streamlining operations and reinforcing partnerships. The company’s plan targets ¥500 billion in total savings against FY2024 actuals. That is a target, not a completed result.

Restructuring targets and reported progress

When Nissan announced the plan in May 2025, it said it intended to reduce its workforce by 20,000 and consolidate vehicle production plants from 17 to 10 by FY2027. Its FY2025 update said fixed-cost savings had reached ¥200 billion and variable-cost savings ¥55 billion. It also said plans to consolidate the manufacturing footprint were announced, with execution underway across seven sites, and reported an 18% reduction in engineering cost per hour against a 20% target. These are company-reported progress figures; they do not mean every announced action is complete. Nissan’s plan details appear in its Re:Nissan overview and FY2025 results update.

Markets and products

Nissan’s announced market strategy assigns different priorities to different regions: hybrids and Infiniti synergies in the U.S.; broader model coverage in Japan; new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China; B- and C-segment SUVs in Europe; large SUVs in the Middle East; and continued use of Mexico as an export hub. These are stated priorities, not proof that the strategy has already succeeded in each market.

In its FY2026 first-quarter update, Nissan reported U.S. sales growth of nearly 10% year over year for the quarter and 16 consecutive months of year-over-year retail growth. In Japan, it reported cumulative orders of 11,000 for the all-new Kicks and 8,000 for the all-new Elgrand. For China, Nissan described a focus on inventory discipline and NEV momentum, naming the N6, N7, NX8 and Frontier Pro. These are Nissan-reported, region-specific indicators; they should not be treated as independent evidence of a global recovery. The plan and market updates are in Nissan’s Re:Nissan materials and quarterly results release.

Partnerships

Nissan identifies Renault Group, Mitsubishi Motors and Honda as partners on projects involving vehicle intelligence and electrification. Announced cooperation includes a battery-electric vehicle based on the next-generation LEAF for Mitsubishi’s North American market, as well as continued Nissan–Honda collaboration in vehicle intelligence and electrification. These are announced projects and cooperative efforts, not evidence that products have been delivered or that the partnerships have produced financial gains.

What Nissan expects in FY2026—and what could change

In its FY2025 results release, Nissan forecast ¥13 trillion in FY2026 revenue, ¥200 billion in operating profit and ¥20 billion in net income. It said it aimed for positive automotive operating profit and free cash flow excluding tariff effects. Its subsequent first-quarter update reduced its FY2026 global sales-volume forecast from 3.3 million to 3.15 million vehicles, primarily because of China market conditions, while reaffirming the financial outlook. These are management forecasts, not guaranteed outcomes.

Nissan cited raw-material costs and geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East as risks, with favorable foreign exchange and first-quarter one-time gains among the offsets. The lower sales forecast alongside an unchanged financial outlook makes it especially important to distinguish targets from results as the year progresses.

How to judge whether the comeback is durable

A consistent comparison across reporting periods is more useful than relying on a single positive quarter or a CEO’s characterization of progress. Track:

  • Operating profit and margin alongside net income, rather than treating operating profit alone as overall profitability.
  • Automotive free cash flow for the full year as well as half-year periods.
  • Recurring operating performance separately from identified one-time contributors, including the tariff-related gains Nissan cited for FY2026 Q1.
  • Sales-volume guidance against actual results, especially where Nissan has identified regional challenges.
  • Cost savings achieved against the ¥500 billion target, while separating completed savings from announced restructuring actions.
  • Company-reported model and regional indicators without generalizing them into proof of global demand.

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said in the FY2025 results release, “We have moved beyond recovery and are entering a phase of growth.” That is management’s assessment. The reported net loss and negative full-year automotive free cash flow for FY2025 show why the evidence still needs to be judged across multiple measures and periods.
