The most important milestones for buyers are the first RX 400h hybrid for the 2006 model year, the 2013 spindle-grille and F SPORT refresh, standard Lexus Safety System+ for 2017, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for 2020, and the fully redesigned fifth-generation RX for 2023.

Date terminology matters. Lexus unveiled the original RX in 1998, but it was sold in the United States as a 1999 model. The second-generation RX 330 was announced during 2003 as a transition to the 2004 model year. The RX 400h was revealed in 2004 and went on sale in the United States during 2005 as a 2006 model-year vehicle. Likewise, the fifth-generation RX was revealed in 2022 for the 2023 model year.
First generation: Lexus RX 300, 1999–2003
1999: The luxury crossover arrives
The 1999 RX 300 established the formula that would define the model: sedan-like ride comfort and quietness, a higher seating position, flexible cargo space, and available all-wheel drive. Unlike a traditional body-on-frame SUV, the RX used car-based monocoque construction.

Lexus specified a 220-horsepower 3.0-liter DOHC V6, seating for five, and up to 75 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The model was significant not only for Lexus but for the luxury market as a whole; Lexus reported that approximately 42,000 RX 300s were sold in North America by the end of its first year.
2000–2001: Refinement rather than reinvention
The RX 300 continued with the same first-generation architecture and basic powertrain. Lexus’s historical material emphasizes ongoing refinement of ride comfort, noise reduction, seating flexibility, cargo room, and available traction rather than a major annual mechanical change. These should be treated as continuation years unless a particular vehicle’s build sheet or original equipment list shows otherwise.
2002: Strong market acceptance
By 2002, the RX 300 had become an established luxury-SUV nameplate. Lexus reported that the RX 300 was America’s best-selling luxury SUV that year. The model remained in its first-generation form; the important story was its market acceptance, not a new platform or hybrid powertrain.
2003: The transition year
The RX 300 remained the U.S. model for 2003, but Lexus announced the all-new RX 330 for the following model cycle. This is why some Lexus historical material refers to the second-generation launch as occurring in 2003, while the normal U.S. generation sequence begins with the 2004 model year.
Second generation: RX 330, RX 350, and RX 400h, 2004–2009
2004: RX 330 redesign
The 2004 RX 330 was a substantially larger and more developed second-generation crossover. It used a 3.3-liter V6 rated at 230 horsepower, a five-speed automatic transmission, a strengthened structure, more rear-seat flexibility, and a revised available all-wheel-drive system.
The basic RX mission did not change, but the vehicle became more substantial. Lexus highlighted additional power, increased legroom, and more seating and convenience equipment while retaining the quiet, car-like character that had made the first RX successful.
2005 reveal and 2006 model-year arrival: RX 400h
The defining event of this generation was the arrival of the RX 400h. Lexus revealed the hybrid in 2004, and it went on sale in the United States in 2005 as a 2006 model-year vehicle. Therefore, a listing that calls the RX 400h a 2005 introduction may be referring to its retail launch, while the vehicle’s U.S. model-year designation is 2006.

The RX 400h was Lexus’s first hybrid vehicle and was described by Lexus as the world’s first luxury hybrid sport-utility vehicle. Its system combined the gasoline engine with three electric motor-generators and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Lexus listed EPA-rated fuel economy of 28 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the front-wheel-drive version, while retaining seating for five and the RX’s cargo utility.
2007: RX 350 replaces RX 330
For 2007, the gasoline model’s name changed from RX 330 to RX 350 as engine displacement increased from 3.3 to 3.5 liters. This was a powertrain and naming evolution within the second generation, not a clean-sheet redesign. The RX 400h continued as the hybrid counterpart.
2008: Continued second-generation availability
The RX 350 and RX 400h continued in the same second-generation body and basic hybrid architecture for 2008. The available historical material does not identify a new-generation change or an equally significant U.S. model-year equipment shift, so 2008 is best understood as a continuation year.

2009: Final year of the second-generation body
2009 was the final year for the RX 330/RX 350/RX 400h-era body. Lexus announced the all-new RX 350 and RX 450h for 2010, beginning the third generation and moving the hybrid badge from 400h to 450h.

2010: Clean-sheet redesign
The third-generation RX arrived for 2010 as the RX 350 gasoline model and RX 450h hybrid. The RX 350 used a 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission. Available Active Torque Control all-wheel drive could vary torque distribution according to traction and driving conditions.
The RX 450h introduced an updated Lexus Hybrid Drive system using a 3.5-liter Atkinson-cycle V6, lighter electric motors, and a smaller, lighter power-control unit. Lexus Enform with Safety Connect also became available on 2010 RX models, bringing a more modern connected-services layer to the redesigned vehicle.
2011: Smart Stop becomes standard
For 2011, Lexus made Smart Stop Technology standard and revised the exterior-color palette. Lexus listed 275 horsepower for the RX 350 and described its six-speed automatic, VVT-i engine technology, revised intake and exhaust tuning, and electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system.
2012: Mostly a carryover year
Lexus characterized the 2012 RX 350 as carrying over with minimal changes. The notable updates were a new recommendation for 87-octane gasoline and the replacement of Smoky Granite Mica with Nebula Gray Pearl. The RX 350 was listed at 270 horsepower with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

2013: Major refresh and the first RX F SPORT
The 2013 RX received the most visible update of the third generation. Lexus introduced its spindle grille to the RX, revised the front bumper and headlamps, added LED daytime running lights, changed the fog-lamp treatment, and updated the taillamps and license-plate surround.
Inside, the refresh brought a redesigned steering wheel, upgraded interior trim, a standard power rear door, and standard USB/iPod control. The RX 350 F SPORT debuted for the first time, adding an eight-speed transmission, paddle shifters, and sport-tuned suspension. The RX 450h received the exterior and interior updates as well.
2014: Refreshed third-generation continuation
The 2014 RX continued the 2013 refresh, including the spindle-grille styling and the new F SPORT positioning. It was not a new-generation year. Grade, drivetrain, and package availability could still change the equipment list, so a specific 2014 vehicle should be evaluated by its original trim and options.
2015: Final year before the next redesign
The RX 350 and RX 450h continued for 2015 as the final third-generation models. Lexus unveiled the all-new fourth-generation RX at the 2015 New York International Auto Show for the 2016 model year, making 2015 the final year of the third-generation body.

Fourth generation: RX 350, RX 450h, RX 350L, and RX 450hL, 2016–2022
2016: New design and a larger technology package
The fourth-generation RX was redesigned inside and out for 2016. The RX 350 used a 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, while the RX 450h produced 308 total system horsepower. The new model grew by 4.7 inches in overall length and 0.4 inches in width, giving Lexus more room for a larger cabin and a more expressive exterior design.
F SPORT became available on both the RX 350 AWD and RX 450h AWD. Lexus also highlighted available features such as a panoramic roof, a 360-degree view monitor, a touch-free power rear door, and Lexus Safety System+ as an option. Because the safety package was optional in 2016, equipment can differ substantially between otherwise similar vehicles.
2017: Lexus Safety System+ becomes standard
For 2017, Lexus made Lexus Safety System+ standard. The package included Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Intelligent High Beam, and high-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
Lexus also introduced an RX 350 FWD F SPORT model, made Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and automatic braking standard on the RX 450h, and added Scout GPS Link to Display Audio. For used-car shoppers comparing 2016 and 2017 models, the standardization of Lexus Safety System+ is one of the most consequential differences.
2018: Three-row RX 350L and RX 450hL
The RX lineup expanded beyond its traditional two-row configuration for 2018 with the RX 350L and RX 450hL. The RX 350L was the gasoline three-row counterpart, while the RX 450hL extended the hybrid powertrain into a three-row body. Lexus announced the RX 450hL with standard second-row captain’s chairs.
The L models are therefore the key fourth-generation choice for shoppers who need more passenger capacity. They should not be confused with a separate RX generation; they are longer-body versions within the 2016–2022 generation and were subject to market and trim availability.
2019: Pre-refresh continuation
The 2019 RX continued in both two-row and L-body forms. It preceded the important 2020 refresh, so a 2019 model does not automatically have the revised multimedia system, smartphone integration, or expanded standard safety technology associated with 2020.

2020: Multimedia, smartphone integration, and LSS+ 2.0
The 2020 RX and RXL received revised front and rear fascias, a new standard 18-inch wheel design, redesigned optional triple-beam LED headlamps, and an available 12.3-inch touchscreen.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were added, Amazon Alexa integration was offered, and Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 became standard across the lineup. Lexus described the RX as its first model to receive Android Auto integration. For many used buyers, 2020 is the most important fourth-generation cutoff because it combines the exterior refresh with a meaningful connectivity upgrade.
2021: Refreshed-generation continuation
The 2021 RX remained within the refreshed fourth-generation architecture. The official material reviewed for this model-year history does not establish a new platform or powertrain family for 2021. Equipment still varied by grade and package, so one trim’s features should not be generalized to every 2021 RX.

2022: Final fourth-generation model year
2022 was the last year of the fourth-generation RX. The 2023 model was completely redesigned, replacing the fourth-generation architecture. A 2022 RX is therefore the final opportunity to buy the pre-redesign body with the 2020-refresh styling, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the LSS+ 2.0-era technology package.

2023: The RX becomes a multi-powertrain family
The fifth-generation RX was redesigned from the wheels to the roof rails on Lexus’s GA-K platform. Lexus announced four powertrain choices and three electrified variants, along with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, Lexus Interface, available Digital Key, an available 14-inch touchscreen, Traffic Jam Assist, Advanced Park, and two new grades: Premium+ and F SPORT Performance.
The RX 350 introduced a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. The RX 350h used a 2.5-liter hybrid system. At the top of the initial performance range, the RX 500h F SPORT Performance combined a 367-horsepower hybrid system with DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and a performance-focused chassis and equipment strategy.
Lexus also announced the first RX plug-in hybrid, the RX 450h+. Although it was part of the fifth-generation plan, U.S. availability was completed for the 2024 model year rather than the initial 2023 launch. That distinction matters when comparing online listings that describe the fifth-generation lineup in general with vehicles actually sold for a specific model year.
2024: RX 450h+ joins the U.S. lineup
The RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid joined the U.S. lineup for 2024, completing the generation’s electrified range. The lineup also gained Cloudburst Gray across all grades and expanded availability of Copper Crest.

Technology and convenience equipment continued to vary by grade, including available Advanced Park with Remote Park. The 2024 lineup included Standard, Premium, Premium+, Luxury, F SPORT Handling, and F SPORT Performance grades, with exact grade and powertrain combinations depending on the model.
2025: F SPORT Design and a limited Black Line edition
For 2025, Lexus added the F SPORT Design grade for the RX 350 and RX 350h. It built on Premium and adopted F SPORT exterior elements, including the F SPORT front fascia, grille, rear valence, and 21-inch wheels.
Lexus also announced a 500-unit RX 500h F SPORT Performance Black Line Special Edition for the U.S. It featured Incognito paint, black exterior details, black 21-inch wheels, orange brake calipers, and a black interior with gray stitching. Because production was limited to 500 units, this version is a special edition within the fifth generation rather than a new trim family or generation.
2026: Incremental grade and convenience changes
For 2026, Lexus added a Premium grade to the RX 450h+ lineup, made wireless phone charging standard on all RX models, and made the Appearance Package available with F SPORT Handling and F SPORT Performance grades.
The 2026 U.S. lineup lists Standard, Premium, Premium+, Luxury, F SPORT Handling, F SPORT Performance, and F SPORT Design grades. Exact grade and powertrain combinations vary by model. Lexus’s 2026 U.S. information was updated on June 19, 2026; that is the latest model-year reference used for this guide.

How to identify an RX generation when shopping used
- Start with the U.S. model year, not the registration date. A vehicle introduced or sold late in a calendar year may carry the following model-year designation. This is especially important for the 1998/1999 original RX and the 2004 reveal versus 2006 RX 400h distinction.
- Use the badge as a clue, not proof. RX 350 appears in multiple generations, and RX 450h spans both the third and fourth generations. Confirm the model year and VIN.
- Separate two-row and L-body models. RX 350L and RX 450hL are three-row fourth-generation models. Their body and interior fitment should not be assumed to match a standard two-row RX.
- Verify safety equipment by year and trim. A 2016 RX may have Lexus Safety System+ as an option, while it was standard for 2017. The 2020 models moved to standard LSS+ 2.0, and the 2023 redesign introduced LSS+ 3.0.
- Check the multimedia hardware directly. A 2020–2022 RX belongs to the refreshed fourth generation, but screen size and other technology still depend on grade and options. The fifth-generation Lexus Interface is a 2023 redesign feature.
- Confirm the powertrain before comparing prices or equipment. RX 350, RX 350h, RX 450h+, and RX 500h are not interchangeable versions. Drivetrain, hybrid system, charging capability, and grade affect both equipment and ownership needs.
- Use the original brochure, build sheet, or owner documentation for a specific vehicle. The history of a generation explains the major changes, but it cannot establish every package, color, wheel, or regional equipment combination on an individual RX.
Generation-specific accessories and reference material
Accessories are another area where the RX’s long production history creates confusion. A product described simply as fitting a Lexus RX is not necessarily universal: floor shape, retention clips, cargo dimensions, dashboard design, remote shape, and powertrain-related parts can vary by generation, model year, and two-row or L body style.
For cabin and cargo protection, Lexus RX all-weather floor liners are a sensible place to start, but the fitment must be matched to the exact year and body style. A liner for a 2016–2022 two-row RX should not be assumed to fit an RX 350L or a 2023–2026 model.
Routine ownership items also require year-specific checking. Before buying a Lexus RX cabin air filter, verify the exact model year, engine or hybrid configuration where applicable, and the supplier’s part number. The same rule applies to a Lexus RX key fob cover: remote shapes and button layouts differ substantially across RX generations.
