Short answer: At about 8:40 a.m. on January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded and burned in the valet area of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada. The sole occupant, Matthew Livelsberger, died, and seven other people suffered minor injuries. Investigators later said the blast was intentional and premeditated and characterized the vehicle as carrying a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.

The public record supports those findings, but it does not establish that the Cybertruck battery caused the explosion, that a terrorist organization directed it or that it was coordinated with the New Orleans attack. The latest major official record located for this account is LVMPD’s 78-page after-action report released November 3, 2025.

What happened at the Trump hotel

At approximately 8:40 a.m. local time on January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded and caught fire in the valet area, also called the porte cochere, at Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, 2000 Fashion Show Drive. The hotel is in Paradise, Nevada, within the Las Vegas metropolitan area; it is not necessarily within the incorporated City of Las Vegas.

Responding officers found the Cybertruck fully engulfed. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire and found its sole occupant dead inside. Seven other people suffered minor injuries, according to the initial Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department account. The hotel was evacuated as a precaution while police, firefighters, bomb technicians, medical personnel and federal investigators assessed the scene.

The confirmed timeline

Investigators reconstructed the Cybertruck’s movements using charging-station records, surveillance footage, vehicle data, digital evidence and information obtained through search warrants. The times are approximate, but the sequence is clear in LVMPD’s public account:

Approximate time What investigators reported
December 28, 2024 The Cybertruck was rented in Denver through Turo, a peer-to-peer vehicle-rental platform.
About 7:35 a.m., January 1 The vehicle arrived at the Trump hotel’s porte cochere.
Shortly afterward The Cybertruck left the hotel and remained for nearly 45 minutes in a nearby business parking lot.
About 8:39 a.m. The vehicle returned to the hotel valet area.
17 seconds later The explosion occurred.
About 8:40 a.m. Emergency dispatch received a report of the explosion.

The charging records publicly described by police traced the truck through Monument and Trinidad in Colorado; Las Vegas, Albuquerque and Gallup in New Mexico; and Holbrook, Flagstaff and Kingman in Arizona before it reached the hotel. The route evidence shows how investigators tracked the vehicle, but it does not by itself explain the driver’s motive.

Who was inside the Cybertruck?

The Clark County Coroner identified the driver as Matthew Livelsberger, 37, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. LVMPD said he was an active-duty U.S. Army Green Beret on approved leave from Germany and associated with the Army’s 10th Special Forces Group. Those details appeared in the department’s January 2, 2025 update.

The coroner determined that Livelsberger’s cause of death was an intraoral gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death suicide. That finding is important because it distinguishes the official cause of death from the vehicle fire and explosion. Investigators initially found government identification and a passport bearing his name, but waited for forensic and coroner confirmation because the body had been severely damaged by the blast.

What did investigators find in the vehicle?

Publicly released investigative information described fireworks or large firework mortars, gas or camp-fuel canisters, two firearms and other materials in or associated with the Cybertruck. LVMPD’s January 8 update said the evidence supported an intentional explosion and suicide.

LVMPD’s later after-action report used the broader operational term vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, or VBIED. The report said the device had the potential to cause mass casualties and extensive structural damage. That is an official assessment of the threat and attack method; it is not a public technical specification of the device.

The available public record does not provide a complete, independently verifiable reconstruction of the ignition system or every component involved. It also does not establish that the Cybertruck’s own high-voltage battery caused the explosion. The police materials instead attribute the intentional blast to materials carried in or associated with the vehicle. The after-action report’s discussion of electric-vehicle fire hazards concerns emergency response and officer safety, not the cause of this explosion.

This article deliberately does not reproduce construction or ignition details. Such information is not necessary to understand what happened and could create an avoidable safety risk.

Was the explosion terrorism?

The answer depends on which part of the public record is being described. The evidence supports the following narrower conclusions:

  • LVMPD initially said the motive was unclear.
  • Later evidence led police to describe the act as intentional, premeditated and a suicide.
  • The November 2025 after-action report described it as a premeditated attack involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.
  • The cited official materials do not establish a confirmed terrorist-organization affiliation, a complete ideological motive or a legally resolved terrorism finding.

Calling the incident an intentional attack is supported by the later police report. Going further and claiming that Livelsberger acted on behalf of a terrorist organization, or that the event had a confirmed ideological purpose, would exceed the public evidence identified for this account.

Was it connected to the New Orleans attack?

The Las Vegas explosion happened hours after a separate vehicle attack in New Orleans on January 1, 2025. Public discussion focused on similarities including rented vehicles and the suspects’ military backgrounds. The Cybertruck used in Las Vegas was rented through Turo, and the New Orleans vehicle was also reportedly rented through Turo.

Those similarities did not establish coordination. The FBI said there was “no definitive link” between the two incidents. On the public record cited here, there is no confirmed operational connection, shared organization or joint plan.

What did generative AI have to do with the case?

In its January 8 release, LVMPD said investigators found a possible manifesto, two previously released letters and an email sent by Livelsberger to a podcast host. The department also said he had used advanced generative-AI technology to research explosives and ignition mechanisms. The department’s statement can be read in its full release.

That finding should be stated precisely. It shows that investigators reported AI-assisted research in the case. It does not, based on the cited release alone, prove that an AI system supplied a complete design, created the device, selected the target or caused the attack. The public materials also do not establish that AI was the decisive factor rather than one of several sources of information available to the suspect.

What the November 2025 after-action report adds

On November 3, 2025, LVMPD released a 78-page after-action report. It is primarily an examination of emergency response and interagency performance, rather than a new criminal charging document. The report credits coordination among LVMPD, the Clark County Fire Department, Community Ambulance, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue’s Bomb Squad, the Clark County Coroner/Medical Examiner, hotel security, the FBI, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

  • drones;
  • 3D laser scanning;
  • specialized cameras;
  • digital forensics;
  • vehicle data;
  • surveillance footage; and
  • information obtained through search warrants.

These tools helped investigators establish the route, timing and scene circumstances. They should not be treated as independent proof of every motive theory circulating online.

Operational lessons identified by the report

LVMPD identified improvement areas involving officer safety, resource management, communications, policy and training, incident-command procedures, electric-vehicle-fire hazards and technology. The EV-related lesson is especially relevant to emergency planning: a burning electric vehicle can present specialized hazards and may require different tactics from a conventional vehicle fire. That operational concern should not be confused with a finding that the Cybertruck battery initiated this particular blast.

What remains unknown

The major unresolved questions are narrower than many online accounts suggest:

  • Full motive: Police established intentional conduct and suicide, but the cited public record does not provide a complete, independently verified explanation of why this location and method were chosen.
  • Ideological purpose: No confirmed terrorist organization or fully documented ideology is established in the sources used here.
  • Technical reconstruction: Public officials have not released a complete account of the ignition mechanism, the exact composition of the device or how each material contributed to the blast.
  • New Orleans connection: The FBI’s statement leaves no definitive public link between the two incidents.
  • Additional evidence: Investigators may have collected digital, forensic or documentary evidence that has not been made public.
