The headline was real—but it is now outdated. The aircraft was the Jetson ONE, a single-seat electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft that Jetson described in April 2023 as costing $98,000 and potentially reaching customers as early as 2024. As of August 2026, Jetson lists it at $148,000 before taxes and other fees, with 2026 and 2027 production sold out and new orders estimated for 2028 delivery.
The Jetson ONE has flown and is more than a concept rendering. But it is not a roadable flying car or a practical car replacement. It is an open-cockpit, single-seat ultralight intended primarily for short recreational flights.

What is the Jetson ONE?
The Jetson ONE is a personal electric aircraft made by Swedish company Jetson AB. It uses eight electric motors and propellers, has one seat, takes off and lands vertically, and is controlled with a four-axis joystick.
Calling it a “flying car” is catchy but misleading. The aircraft is not presented as road legal, does not carry passengers, has no meaningful cargo capacity, and cannot replace a normal automobile. A more accurate description is a single-seat personal eVTOL designed around the ultralight category.

- Transform your standing hoverboard into an electronic go-kart.
- Fun to move: Handlebar control is extra responsive to changes in speed and direction, and the kart’s single front wheel design allows for spins, zig zags, and turns.
- Easy attachment to most hoverboards, thanks to adjustable base brackets and included Velcro straps.
- Soft handgrips and foot rests for comfort. Adjustable length and height to fit all riders comfortably.
- Hoverboard sold separately.
Jetson lists an aluminum spaceframe, carbon-fiber components, high-discharge lithium-ion batteries and an open cockpit. Its compact folded width is approximately 980 millimeters, or about 3 feet 2½ inches. Jetson’s specifications identify a maximum pilot weight of 95 kilograms, or 210 pounds.
Then versus now: the price and delivery promise
| Date | Price or availability |
|---|---|
| April 2023 | $98,000 was reported in the original coverage, with deliveries potentially beginning in 2024 |
| August 2026 | $148,000 before taxes and other fees |
| Current production status | 2026 and 2027 production sold out; new orders estimated for 2028 delivery |
The original $98,000 figure came from coverage published on April 25, 2023. “As soon as next year” therefore meant 2024, not an unspecified future year. It was a company delivery expectation, not a guaranteed date. The historical price and forecast are documented in contemporaneous coverage.

It requires an $8,000 deposit described as non-refundable, with the remaining $140,000 due when the aircraft is ready for factory delivery. The listed price excludes taxes and other fees, so it should not be treated as the complete cost of ownership.
The order page also distinguishes between production already sold out, reserved production slots and new orders. Those categories matter: a delivered aircraft, a reserved build slot and a new order estimated for 2028 are not the same thing.

Jetson has also reported an endurance test covering 11.02 miles, or 17.74 kilometers, at a cruise speed of 60 km/h. That is a company-reported test result, not a guaranteed range in every operating condition. The test is described in Jetson’s flight report.
The advertised 20-minute flight time should likewise not be treated as 20 minutes of practical commuting. A pilot needs reserve capacity, and usable endurance can change with pilot weight, temperature, wind, battery condition and the chosen flight profile. A pilot close to the 210-pound limit also has little payload margin for additional equipment or clothing.
Does it require a pilot’s license?
Jetson says a conventional pilot’s license is not required to operate the aircraft in the United States because the Jetson ONE is designed around the FAA’s ultralight framework. That does not mean it can be flown without rules or preparation.
The relevant framework is FAA Part 103. Qualifying ultralights are generally limited to single-occupant recreational or sport use and do not receive a standard airworthiness certificate. The category includes requirements and operating restrictions involving factors such as:
- Empty weight below 254 pounds, excluding specified safety equipment.
- Fuel capacity of no more than five U.S. gallons for powered ultralights.
- A maximum calibrated airspeed of 55 knots at full power in level flight.
- A power-off stall speed of no more than 24 knots.
A regulatory discussion in an SEC filing describes the Part 103 position and the claim that operators do not need airman certificates.
“No pilot’s license” is therefore not the same as “no restrictions.” Airspace rules, local takeoff and landing restrictions, noise and land-use rules, safety requirements and other state or municipal regulations may apply. The exact legality of operating from a particular property or over a particular area is location-dependent and should be confirmed with the relevant aviation authorities.

The U.S. position also should not be generalized to the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia or other countries. The aircraft’s legal classification and operating requirements can differ significantly by jurisdiction.

What would flying one actually be like?
The Jetson ONE’s limitations make its likely use case much narrower than the original “commute to work” framing suggests.
- Short flights: Around 20 minutes of advertised flight time leaves limited room for reserves or diversions.
- One occupant: It cannot carry family members, friends or a passenger.
- No practical cargo capacity: It is not a substitute for a car, motorcycle or utility aircraft.
- Open cockpit: The pilot is exposed to weather, wind, noise and rotor wash.
- Suitable operating area required: Vertical takeoff does not remove the need for a clear, safe and legally usable launch and landing site.
- Weather sensitivity: Rain, strong winds, turbulence, icing and poor visibility can make a flight unsuitable even if the aircraft is technically capable of flying.
- No road capability: It must be transported or stored like an aircraft rather than driven to work.
For those reasons, it is better understood as a recreational aircraft for short flights than as an everyday transportation device.

Jetson lists several safety features, including:
- A race-car-inspired safety cell.
- Redundancy intended to allow continued flight after the loss of one motor.
- Redundant battery propulsion.
- Hands-free hover and emergency functions.
- A ballistic parachute.
- A radar-sensor-driven auto-landing system.
These are important design claims, but they remain claims made by the manufacturer unless supported by independent certification or testing. Motor redundancy does not eliminate every failure mode, and a parachute’s usefulness depends on factors such as altitude, deployment conditions and the nature of the emergency. Buyers should ask Jetson for the operating envelope, emergency procedures, training requirements, service support and evidence supporting each safety system.

Yes. Jetson has published flight videos and test reports, and its current website says it has begun delivering aircraft to clients. Jetson has also publicized a delivery to Palmer Luckey and a California coastal flight in 2026. Its home page and news section document those developments.
That establishes that functioning demonstrator and customer aircraft exist. It does not establish mass production, broad availability, unrestricted operation or an easy ownership experience for a typical buyer. A demonstration flight, factory delivery, legal operation in a particular country and regular commuting are separate milestones.
What does ownership really involve?
The $148,000 aircraft price is only the starting point. A serious buyer should investigate the following before paying the non-refundable deposit:
- Whether the aircraft can legally be operated in the buyer’s country and intended location.
- Whether local rules permit takeoff and landing from the intended property.
- Taxes, delivery charges and factory collection requirements.
- Training and familiarization, even if a conventional pilot certificate is not required.
- Insurance availability and cost.
- Secure storage and battery-charging requirements.
- Maintenance schedules, spare parts and technical support.
- Battery replacement terms, warranty coverage and service-center access.
- Weather limitations and emergency landing procedures.
- The delivery year and the consequences of production delays.
Jetson’s deposit is explicitly described as non-refundable, so delivery terms and cancellation rights deserve particular attention before placing an order.
Who is the Jetson ONE for?
| Good fit | Poor fit |
|---|---|
| Wealthy recreational early adopters | Ordinary daily commuters |
| Aviation and technology enthusiasts | Families needing passenger capacity |
| Short-duration sightseeing or private recreation | Long-distance travelers |
| Buyers with suitable legal launch and landing space | Anyone expecting car-like convenience |
| Owners comfortable with experimental, specialized equipment | All-weather or cargo-focused users |
Compared with a helicopter, $148,000 may appear relatively low. Compared with a car—or even many conventional recreational vehicles—it is not an affordable transportation purchase. It is a luxury personal aircraft with limited range, limited payload and a long order queue.
Bottom line
The Jetson ONE is a real flying personal aircraft, not merely a rendering, but the original headline no longer describes the deal. The $98,000 price was a 2023 figure, and the promised 2024 delivery window has passed. In 2026, Jetson lists the aircraft at $148,000 before taxes and other fees, with new orders estimated for 2028.
Its lack of a conventional pilot-license requirement in the United States may be genuine under the Part 103 ultralight framework, but that does not make it unrestricted or practical as a car. With one seat, roughly 20 minutes of advertised flight time, an open cockpit and significant legal and ownership considerations, the Jetson ONE is best viewed as a high-end recreational aircraft—not a flying commuter car.
