Hitler’s 1939 Mercedes-Benz 770K Grosser Offener Tourenwagen was auctioned at Worldwide Auctioneers’ Scottsdale sale on January 17, 2018. Contemporary reporting described a highest bid of $7 million, but the available records do not establish a verified final sale price or identify the buyer. It is not a newly listed 2026 auction car.
What car was auctioned?
The vehicle was a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 770K Grosser Offener Tourenwagen, also called the “Grosser” or “Super Mercedes.” Worldwide Auctioneers described it as ordered by, built for and used by Adolf Hitler. That association is the car’s central provenance claim, although individual wartime-use stories should be treated as claims in contemporary auction and media accounts rather than as an undifferentiated, fully verified record.

Worldwide Auctioneers linked the car directly to Hitler’s use. Its account also associated the vehicle with Hitler’s victory parade through Berlin after France’s defeat. RTÉ separately reported that it was used during a state visit involving Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. Those episodes are provenance statements carried by the contemporary reports; they should not be expanded into a claim that every detail of the car’s wartime history has been independently established.

How rare is the 770K Grosser?
The rarity figures depend on what is being counted. Worldwide Auctioneers said the car was one of five surviving Offener Tourenwagens in private hands. The Los Angeles Times reported the auction company’s separate claim that only four comparable vehicles were built to transport Hitler and his staff. These statements use different scopes—surviving privately held cars versus a claimed production group—so neither should be reduced to one universal survival number.
| Rarity statement | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Five surviving examples | Worldwide Auctioneers’ description of surviving Offener Tourenwagens in private hands. |
| Four built | A Los Angeles Times report of Worldwide’s claim concerning vehicles built to transport Hitler and his staff. |
Was Hitler’s Mercedes really auctioned?
Yes. Worldwide Auctioneers scheduled the car for its Scottsdale Auction on January 17, 2018, and contemporary coverage reported that the sale took place that day. “Heading to auction” is therefore archival wording for this vehicle, not evidence of a current listing in 2026.

How much did Hitler’s Mercedes sell for?
A Getty Images/AFP caption reported a highest bid of $7 million at the Scottsdale auction. That figure is a reported top bid, not a verified completed-transaction price. The available records do not establish whether the bid became a sale, what the final price including any buyer’s premium was, or who acquired the car.
What happened to the proceeds?
Worldwide Auctioneers said 10 percent of the sale price would be donated to the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust education and related anti-bigotry work. The pledge was part of the auction’s stated charitable context; the available material does not provide a separate accounting of the eventual donation.

Why does the car remain controversial?
The 770K combines exceptional prewar engineering with direct association with Nazi leadership. Collectors may evaluate its coachwork, mechanical specification, originality and chain of custody, but those factors do not erase the historical meaning of its use. A responsible account should identify which details come from auction-house provenance statements, which come from contemporary media reports and which remain unverified.
How should collectors assess a comparable historic state car?
- Provenance quality: Look for contemporaneous documents, ownership records and a continuous chain of custody.
- Originality and restoration: Separate surviving factory components from later repairs, rebuilt systems or replacement coachwork.
- Protection and specification: Verify armor, glazing, engine configuration and body style rather than relying on a model name alone.
- Rarity definition: Establish whether a number refers to production, surviving cars, privately held examples or a specific official-use group.
- Auction terminology: Distinguish an opening bid, highest bid, hammer price, reported sale price and completed transaction.
- Ethical context: Consider how the seller documents the history and whether the sale includes an educational or charitable commitment.
What is known today?
The 2018 Scottsdale auction is the established event in the cited contemporary coverage. A verified current owner, current asking price or active 2026 listing is not established here. Any modern advertisement using the car’s name should be checked against documentary provenance rather than assumed to be the same vehicle.
