Grok Did Come to Tesla Vehicles—but Not All at Once

Grok did arrive in Tesla vehicles, but not as a universal next-week launch. Here are the rollout timeline, hardware and software requirements, supported commands, privacy claims, and troubleshooting steps.

Grok did arrive in Tesla vehicles—but not all at once. Musk’s July 10, 2025 promise that the chatbot would come “next week at the latest” was followed by a staged over-the-air rollout tied to compatible hardware, software, connectivity, and region. Tesla now describes Grok as a beta in-car assistant for qualifying vehicles.

Elon Musk’s July 10, 2025 promise was ultimately followed by a Tesla rollout, but not a universal launch the following week. Grok became available in qualifying Tesla vehicles through staged over-the-air software updates. Tesla’s current requirements include an AMD infotainment processor, vehicle software version 2025.26 or later, and Premium Connectivity or a Wi-Fi connection. As of August 12, 2026, Tesla describes the feature as available in eligible vehicles and still in beta.

The original announcement was therefore best understood as an intended rollout target—not a guarantee that every Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck in every country would receive Grok at the same time.

What Elon Musk actually announced

On July 10, 2025, Musk said on X that Grok would arrive in Tesla vehicles “very soon” and “next week at the latest.” Bloomberg reported the announcement the same day.

9" Wireless Apple Carplay Screen for Car with OTA Update, Backup Camera
  • CarPlay and Android Auto: This plug-in device connects to your phone via Bluetooth and WiFi. To use CarPlay, connect an iPhone; to use Android Auto, connect an Android phone. Simply connect it to your smartphone and access map navigation, calling, email, notifications, music, and more.
  • Online Maps and Real-Time GPS Navigation with Voice Control: When connected to a smartphone, the portable Apple CarPlay display delivers precise real-time positioning and zero-delay GPS navigation. Supports real-time navigation via apps like Google Maps and Waze (non-preinstalled apps require phone connection). Equipped with the latest voice control technology, it enables map navigation, calls, emails, notifications, music, and more through Siri/Google Assistant.
  • OTA Updates: Keep your device up to date with over-the-air firmware updates, so you’re always one step ahead. This wireless CarPlay screen automatically pushes new system updates, ensuring long-term compatibility between your phone and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and other in-car electronics.
  • Night Vision Backup Camera: A waterproof rear-view camera with night vision capabilities that connects to your in-car display. The backup camera accurately and clearly records your entire driving journey, providing you with comprehensive safety protection. The rear-view camera cable works in sync with your backup lights, making installation extremely convenient.
  • Phone Mirroring Connection and Four Audio Outputs: This 9-inch CarPlay screen supports mirroring for both iOS and Android phones. The Q9S double-DIN car stereo integrates CarPlay functionality while supporting Bluetooth audio, built-in speakers, FM radio, and an AUX port. Enjoy clear, stable music even in noisy environments. Connecting your phone via Bluetooth to the car's Bluetooth system for audio playback through the car speakers is the optimal choice.

That wording created an expectation of an imminent, broad launch. In practice, vehicle software features rarely reach every compatible car simultaneously. Tesla’s later support documentation tied Grok to specific infotainment hardware, a minimum software version, connectivity, and market availability. The result was a staged rollout rather than a single worldwide switch-on.

When did Grok arrive in Tesla vehicles?

Date What happened What it means
July 10, 2025 Musk said Grok would come to Tesla vehicles “next week at the latest.” A forward-looking target, not proof of simultaneous global availability.
2025 software rollout Tesla documentation identified vehicle software 2025.26 or later as an eligibility condition. Access depended on an over-the-air software update as well as compatible hardware.
April 2026 Tesla’s Q1 2026 update described “Hey Grok” activation and location-based reminders. The feature had expanded beyond a basic voice-chat demonstration.
July 21, 2026 Tesla Japan announced an over-the-air rollout for compatible vehicles in Japan. Japan’s rollout continued region by region without a service-center visit or parts replacement.
August 12, 2026 Tesla’s support page still described Grok as available in qualifying vehicles and in beta. Grok was a live feature, but its availability and capabilities remained subject to change.

The Japan announcement should not be treated as evidence that the United States or every other market received identical functionality on the same date. Tesla’s Japanese release described local availability and examples of use in that market.

Which Tesla vehicles support Grok?

Tesla does not make eligibility a simple matter of choosing a model name. The company says Grok is not available on all Tesla vehicles. The current requirements listed by Tesla are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • AMD processor: The vehicle must have the compatible AMD infotainment processor.
  • Software version 2025.26 or later: The car must be updated to at least the required vehicle software version.
  • Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi: Grok requires the vehicle to have Premium Connectivity or a stable Wi-Fi connection.

As a result, a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck is not automatically eligible solely because of its model name. Production year, configuration, infotainment hardware, software rollout, and region can all matter.

How to check your Tesla’s infotainment processor

  1. Open Controls on the vehicle touchscreen.
  2. Tap Software.
  3. Open Additional Vehicle Information.
  4. Look for the infotainment processor information and confirm that the vehicle has an AMD processor.
  5. Return to the Software screen and check that the vehicle is running version 2025.26 or later.

Even if the hardware and software appear to qualify, Tesla says availability may expand through future over-the-air updates and may change or end at any time. Eligibility is not the same as a guarantee that the feature is already enabled in a particular country or vehicle.

What can Grok do inside a Tesla?

Tesla describes Grok as an in-car, hands-free AI companion. The listed capabilities include ordinary conversation, selectable voices and personalities, vehicle-related assistance, navigation, and selected commands.

According to Tesla’s support documentation, drivers can use Grok for tasks such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Navigating to a destination or planning a trip.
  • Making phone calls.
  • Searching for and playing music.
  • Adjusting the vehicle’s temperature.
  • Opening the glove box.
  • Answering questions about the Tesla.
  • Setting reminders, including location-based reminders in the capabilities documented by Tesla’s Q1 2026 update.

Tesla’s Q1 2026 investor update specifically said customers could activate the assistant by saying “Hey Grok.” That hands-free wake phrase is different from assuming that Grok can control every vehicle function. Tesla lists selected commands, and the feature remains labeled beta.

Trip planning and natural-language requests

Tesla Japan described conversational trip planning and reminders tied to the vehicle’s location. Its examples included recommendations based on natural-language constraints such as available time, parking, and whether a destination is suitable for a family.

Those examples show the direction of the integration, but they should be read as use cases described by Tesla Japan—not as proof that every market, vehicle, or software build offers exactly the same commands. Feature availability can vary by region and rollout stage.

How to activate Grok in a compatible Tesla

The exact touchscreen layout and voice behavior may change while the feature is in beta, but the practical prerequisites are straightforward:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make sure the vehicle is connected through Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi.
  2. Install available vehicle software updates and confirm version 2025.26 or later.
  3. Check Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information for the AMD infotainment processor.
  4. Look for Grok in the vehicle’s interface or use the supported voice activation phrase, “Hey Grok,” where enabled.
  5. Choose a voice or personality if those options are presented.
  6. Test a simple request, such as navigation or a question about the vehicle, while parked or when it is safe to interact.

Tesla says a Grok account or subscription is not required to enable Grok in the vehicle at this time. That qualification matters: the company may change the account, subscription, or access requirements in a later update.

Does Grok replace Tesla’s existing voice commands?

Not necessarily. Grok is a conversational layer that can handle questions and selected requests, but Tesla’s documentation does not say that it replaces every existing touchscreen control or voice-command pathway. Nor does it say that Grok can operate every vehicle system.

Owners should treat the supported command list as the boundary of what Tesla currently promises. A request that sounds natural to a human may still fail if the relevant vehicle action is not supported, if connectivity is unavailable, or if the feature has not reached that vehicle’s software build.

Connectivity and beta limitations

Grok is cloud-connected rather than a fully offline assistant. Tesla requires Premium Connectivity or a Wi-Fi connection, so poor cellular service, a disconnected Wi-Fi network, or a service outage can affect responses and commands.

The beta label also signals that behavior can change. Owners may encounter:

  • Different capabilities between software versions or regions.
  • Delayed or incomplete responses when connectivity is weak.
  • Requests that are misunderstood or not supported.
  • Changes to the interface, wake phrase, voices, or personalities.
  • Temporary unavailability during service or software changes.

Because the assistant is intended for use in a moving vehicle, drivers should not rely on it for safety-critical decisions, emergency instructions, or anything that requires checking an authoritative source. Use it as a convenience feature, not as a substitute for attention to the road or Tesla’s official vehicle controls.

What does Tesla say about privacy?

Tesla says Grok interactions are securely processed by SpaceXAI and that conversations remain anonymous to Tesla and are not linked to the driver or vehicle. Tesla also says users can sign in to synchronize history or use guest mode. These are the companies’ stated product and privacy claims, not an independent security audit.

The practical choice is:

  • Guest mode: Use Grok without signing in to sync conversation history.
  • Signed-in use: Sign in if synchronizing history across supported experiences is more important to you.

As with any cloud-based voice assistant, drivers should avoid dictating sensitive personal, financial, medical, or work information unless they understand how that information is handled under the current service terms and settings. Tesla’s privacy description may also change as the feature develops.

Why is Grok being added to Tesla?

The integration connects Tesla’s in-car interface with xAI’s broader conversational AI strategy. xAI describes Grok Voice as a low-latency voice agent with tool calling and real-time data access, and says Grok is offered through the Grok mobile app and Tesla vehicles.

That context helps explain why Tesla is positioning Grok as more than a conventional voice-command system: the goal is a conversational assistant that can interpret requests and invoke supported tools. However, capabilities available in Grok’s standalone products should not automatically be assumed to work inside a Tesla. The vehicle integration has its own hardware, software, regional, and command limitations.

What the original “next week” claim got right—and wrong

Claim or expectation More accurate interpretation
Grok was coming to Tesla vehicles imminently. Broadly correct as a product direction; Tesla subsequently shipped the feature.
Every Tesla would receive it the following week. Not supported. Access depended on hardware, software, connectivity, and regional rollout.
Any vehicle of a qualifying model would work. Not necessarily. Tesla requires a compatible AMD processor and software version.
Grok could control the entire car. Incorrectly broad. Tesla documents selected vehicle commands and continues to label Grok beta.
Japan’s rollout proves worldwide availability. No. The July 2026 announcement establishes Japan-specific distribution and use cases.

What to do if Grok is missing

  1. Check the software version. Update the vehicle if it is below 2025.26.
  2. Check the processor. Use Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information to verify the AMD infotainment processor.
  3. Check connectivity. Confirm Premium Connectivity or connect the vehicle to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
  4. Consider regional availability. Tesla may distribute the feature in stages, and one country’s rollout does not establish another country’s schedule.
  5. Allow for beta changes. The feature may not be enabled immediately after an update, and Tesla says availability can change or end.

A service-center visit or replacement infotainment hardware is not presented as the normal rollout path. Tesla’s updates are delivered over the air, and Tesla Japan specifically said its compatible-vehicle distribution did not require a service-center visit or parts replacement.

Bottom line

Grok did make it into Tesla vehicles, but the headline’s “next week” should not be read as a promise of a simultaneous global launch. The real rollout was eligibility-dependent: compatible AMD infotainment hardware, software version 2025.26 or later, and Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi are required under Tesla’s current documentation. The assistant can handle conversation, navigation, selected vehicle commands, music, calls, and reminders, but it remains a beta feature with regional and software-dependent differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not universally. Musk’s July 10, 2025 statement was a forward-looking target. Tesla later rolled Grok out in stages, depending on compatible hardware, software, connectivity, and region.

Did Grok arrive in Tesla vehicles the week after Musk announced it?

Tesla says the vehicle must have an AMD infotainment processor, software version 2025.26 or later, and Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi. Model name alone does not guarantee eligibility.

Which Teslas can use Grok?

On the touchscreen, open Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information and check the infotainment processor information.

How do I check whether my Tesla has the AMD processor?

Tesla says a Grok account or subscription is not required in the vehicle at this time. That requirement may change in a future update.

Does Grok require a subscription?

No such broad capability is documented. Tesla lists selected functions including navigation, calls, music, temperature adjustment, opening the glove box, vehicle questions, and reminders. Grok is still labeled beta.

Can Grok control every Tesla function?

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Musk’s July 10, 2025 “next week” announcement led to a real Tesla rollout, but not one that reached every vehicle at once. Check for an AMD infotainment processor, software 2025.26 or later, and Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi. As of August 12, 2026, Grok is available in qualifying Teslas, supports selected hands-free commands, and remains in beta.
