Ford’s August 11, 2025 announcement was about a new EV platform and manufacturing system, not a finished truck. The first vehicle planned for the platform is a midsize, four-door electric pickup, scheduled for 2027. Axios reported on August 6, 2026, that Ford plans to call it Fathom, with a reported starting price of $28,350 and pre-orders planned for early 2027. Ford had not publicly shown the truck at the time of that report.
What Ford announced on August 11
At an event in Louisville, Kentucky, Ford introduced the Ford Universal EV Platform and Ford Universal EV Production System. The first vehicle planned for the platform is a midsize, four-door electric pickup to be assembled at Ford’s Louisville plant for U.S. and export markets, with launch scheduled for 2027.

Ford initially described the truck as targeting a starting price of about $30,000. That was a target announced in 2025, not a final MSRP. The later $28,350 figure is a reported price from Axios, not a full Ford-published consumer specification sheet.

How Ford says it will cut EV costs
Ford’s approach combines changes to the vehicle itself with a different factory workflow. The company says the platform has fewer parts and fasteners, while the production system builds major sections in parallel rather than moving the whole vehicle through one long conveyor line.

A simpler vehicle architecture
Ford says the Universal EV Platform uses 20% fewer parts than a typical vehicle and 25% fewer fasteners. The planned wiring harness for the midsize truck is more than 4,000 feet (1.3 km) shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than the harness in Ford’s first-generation electric SUV. Fewer components and shorter wiring can simplify assembly, but Ford has not published consumer-level cost savings attributable to each change.
An “assembly tree” and large castings
Instead of assembling the vehicle along one long conveyor, Ford’s production system uses parallel branches. The front, rear, and structural-battery subassemblies are built separately and joined later. Ford says this arrangement cuts dock-to-dock workstations by 40% and improves assembly time by 15% compared with its stated baseline. These are Ford’s figures, not independently verified results.

Ford also plans to use large, single-piece aluminum unicastings in place of dozens of smaller parts. The aim is to reduce part count and the steps required to join components. The exact castings and their role in the production truck have not yet been detailed publicly.
A structural LFP battery
The platform is designed around a structural, cobalt-free and nickel-free prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack. Ford says the pack also forms the vehicle floor. Integrating the pack into the structure is intended to support a low center of gravity and make more efficient use of interior space. Ford has not announced the pickup’s battery capacity or charge rate.

What is known—and not known—about the Fathom
The firmest vehicle details in Ford’s 2025 announcement are its body style, broad size class, intended markets, assembly location, and planned 2027 launch. The Fathom name, $28,350 starting price, and early-2027 pre-order plan come from Axios’s August 2026 report and should be treated as reported details pending a complete Ford specification and ordering announcement.
Ford said additional specifications would follow, including a reveal date, final starting price, EPA-estimated range, battery sizes, and charge times. The cited material does not establish a confirmed range, charging time, connector, towing figure, or production trim lineup. Axios also reported features including seating for five adults, a frunk, bidirectional power, a large touchscreen, and BlueCruise integration; those details remain report-level claims until Ford publishes full specifications.

Ford said it would invest nearly $2 billion in its Louisville operation and secure 2,200 hourly jobs. The company had separately announced a $3 billion investment in BlueOval Battery Park Michigan. Ford says the two plants together will create or secure nearly 4,000 direct jobs and support dozens of U.S.-based suppliers.

The investment is part of Ford’s effort to make an affordable EV profitably in the United States while competing with lower-cost global producers. CEO Jim Farley described the program as a major change in how Ford designs and builds vehicles; the company’s challenge is to turn its manufacturing targets into a truck that meets customers’ expectations at the intended price.
