XPeng AeroHT did not unveil just one flying car. At XPeng Tech Day 2023, the Chinese company showed two radically different approaches: a six-wheel ground vehicle that carries a detachable two-seat eVTOL aircraft, and a dramatic flying-supercar concept that hides its propellers and flight arms inside the road car.
The distinction matters. The Land Aircraft Carrier became XPeng AeroHT’s more credible route toward commercialization, while the concealed-airframe flying supercar remained a concept whose working capability, range, certification path and production status were not established by the reveal.
Two flying-car ideas, one reveal
XPeng AeroHT’s October 2023 presentation addressed the flying-car problem in two very different ways.
The first solution was visibly practical: separate the road vehicle from the aircraft. A large six-wheel “mothership” would drive on roads, carry a compact two-seat electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft in its rear compartment, and deploy it when the occupants reached a suitable takeoff location.

The second solution was much more theatrical. It looked like a high-performance road car, but its flight hardware was concealed within the body. When flight was required, the roof opened, multiple arms unfolded, and the vehicle transformed into a multicopter.
Both concepts were physical vehicles displayed at the event. Neither should be confused with proof that a certified, mass-produced flying supercar was ready for customer delivery.
The Land Aircraft Carrier: a six-wheel vehicle carrying its own aircraft
The Land Aircraft Carrier is a modular flying-car system made up of two vehicles:
- A ground module: a six-wheel, van-like vehicle designed to transport the aircraft and its occupants on ordinary roads.
- An air module: a detachable, two-seat electric multicopter stored in the ground vehicle’s rear compartment.
XPeng AeroHT’s product material describes the ground module as approximately 5.5 meters long, 2 meters wide and 2 meters high. The company says it is intended to fit standard parking spaces and be compatible with garages. It also states that the ground vehicle can be operated with a standard Chinese Class C driver’s license; that is a company-stated requirement for the Chinese market, not a global regulatory approval.
The system’s basic sequence is easier to understand than a roadable aircraft that must do everything itself:
- The ground vehicle drives to a suitable launch area.
- Its suspension lowers and the rear doors open.
- The air module separates from the carrier.
- The aircraft unfolds its rotors and landing gear.
- The ground module can move away, leaving the aircraft to perform the flight.
- After landing, the aircraft is intended to reconnect with the carrier for transport and recharging.
That architecture solves one of the hardest packaging problems in a roadable aircraft: the road vehicle does not need to carry the full flight system while it is airborne. The aircraft can be optimized for flight, while the carrier handles road transport, storage and much of the charging infrastructure.
How the carrier is supposed to operate
According to XPeng AeroHT’s product overview, the air module is designed to support both manual and autonomous flight modes. The company also lists route planning, environmental monitoring, pilot override and return-to-home functions among the intended system features.
Those descriptions should be read as manufacturer-provided product capabilities, not as an independent assessment of safety or consumer readiness. Autonomous flight in a controlled demonstration is not the same as routine operation in varied weather, around obstacles, near populated areas or within a national air-traffic system.

XPeng AeroHT also says the aircraft uses redundant propulsion, power, communications, flight-control and operating systems. The company’s documentation further states that more than 200 units or systems had been tested across component, system and complete-air-module testing. These are useful indications of the development effort, but they remain company-reported figures rather than independently audited safety results.
The flying supercar hides eight propellers inside its body
The second vehicle was the more surprising visual reveal. Instead of looking like a carrier truck with an aircraft in the back, the updated design resembled a futuristic supercar with flight equipment hidden inside its body.

Compared with an earlier design that used two large propellers mounted on folding arms, the updated concept used:
- Four folding arms;
- Eight coaxially mounted propellers;
- A flight system stored inside the road-car body;
- A roof that opens to allow the arms and propellers to deploy.
In the demonstration sequence, the flight arms unfolded from the vehicle and the steering wheel retracted. The driver would then use a joystick for flight rather than the conventional steering wheel used on the road.
The four-arm, eight-propeller arrangement was intended to improve control and redundancy compared with the earlier layout. Multiple motors and propellers can offer more opportunities for fault tolerance than a simpler configuration, although the presence of redundant hardware does not by itself prove that the complete aircraft meets certification requirements.
The important caveat: a concept is not a flying production car
The 2023 flying-supercar reveal showed a physical concept with its flight equipment unfolded. It was not merely computer-generated imagery. But the available reporting did not establish that the fold-away mechanisms were fully functional, that the complete vehicle had performed practical flight testing, or that XPeng AeroHT intended to turn that specific design into a certified production model.
That uncertainty is central to understanding the story. A display vehicle can demonstrate packaging, styling and a proposed transformation sequence without demonstrating useful range, reliable operation, crashworthiness, maintainability or airworthiness.
The engineering challenge is severe. A roadable flying supercar must combine:

- Motors, batteries and flight-control electronics;
- Folding arms, hinges and deployment locks;
- Road wheels, suspension and steering;
- A crash-testable passenger compartment;
- Road safety equipment and conventional vehicle systems.
All of that adds mass. Extra mass increases the energy needed for flight, while the batteries required to provide that energy add still more mass. Folding hardware also introduces mechanical complexity, potential failure points and packaging constraints. For that reason, the flying supercar’s useful flight range was uncertain in the 2023 coverage and should not be presented as an established specification.
Why the modular design is the more credible commercial path
The Land Aircraft Carrier is less visually elegant, but it separates incompatible jobs. The ground module can be designed around road handling, passenger space, storage and charging. The air module can be designed around vertical takeoff, flight control and aviation requirements.
That separation does not make certification easy. It does, however, avoid forcing one compact vehicle to be both a practical road car and an efficient aircraft at the same time.
It also creates a more understandable ownership model. The carrier transports the aircraft to a launch site rather than requiring every destination to be connected directly to an airport or helipad. XPeng AeroHT has described possible uses ranging from emergency services to privately owned recreational flying, although the operational, licensing and infrastructure requirements would vary substantially by use.

From concept reveal to production testing
XPeng AeroHT’s product overview outlined an ambitious Chinese commercialization schedule. It listed a December launch and pre-sale kickoff, completion of a mass-production plant in 2025, Chinese civil-aviation type certification in 2025 and mass-production deliveries in 2026. The company also described a Guangzhou manufacturing base planned for annual production of up to 10,000 air modules.
In January 2025, TechCrunch reported that XPeng AeroHT had disclosed 3,000 intent orders, a target price below $300,000 and a China-first launch strategy. It also reported that the production facility was designed to reach 10,000 vehicles at capacity.
Those milestones need careful interpretation. Type certification is only one part of the aviation approval process. As TechCrunch noted, production certification and an airworthiness certificate would still be required before mass production and legal operation could proceed. A customer’s ability to drive the carrier on public roads would not automatically authorize the aircraft to fly wherever the owner wished.
A more significant update arrived on March 6, 2026. Xinhua reported that five Land Aircraft Carrier vehicles had rolled off the production line in batch trial production and had completed multi-aircraft test flights. The report also cited a stated full-capacity production rate of one aircraft every 30 minutes.

This is meaningful progress for the modular Land Aircraft Carrier. It is not evidence that the separate concealed-airframe flying supercar entered production. The two designs should remain distinct in any account of XPeng AeroHT’s development.

Even if the hardware performs as intended, a consumer flying car must clear several different hurdles.
Road certification
The ground vehicle needs to comply with the rules governing vehicles on public roads, including requirements for braking, lighting, crash protection, steering, tires and occupant safety. The exact requirements depend on the jurisdiction.
Aircraft certification
The air module must satisfy aviation authorities on structural integrity, propulsion reliability, flight-control systems, emergency procedures and continued airworthiness. Type certification, production approval and an individual aircraft’s airworthiness authorization are separate steps.

Pilot qualification
A road-car driving license cannot be assumed to authorize piloting an eVTOL aircraft. Training, medical requirements, aircraft-category rules and operating limitations depend on the applicable aviation regulator and location.
Energy and range
Vertical flight is energy-intensive. Batteries must power several rotors during takeoff, hover and landing, while also being light enough to preserve useful payload and range. The carrier’s range-extender system is intended to provide multiple recharges for the air module, according to XPeng AeroHT’s description, but that does not remove the aircraft’s own payload, weather and battery constraints.

Airspace and infrastructure
Owners would need approved places to take off and land, procedures for operating around buildings and other aircraft, communications coverage and rules for weather and emergencies. A vehicle that can technically lift off is not necessarily permitted to do so in a suburban street, a private garden or a crowded city.
What XPeng AeroHT’s reveal actually tells us
The 2023 presentation was important because it showed two competing philosophies for personal eVTOL transportation.

The Land Aircraft Carrier accepted a less conventional appearance in exchange for modularity. The aircraft can be treated as an aircraft, the carrier as a road vehicle, and the connection between them as a carefully engineered transport and charging system.
By March 2026, the carrier—not the concealed-airframe supercar—was the design with reported batch trial production and multi-aircraft test flights. That does not guarantee successful deliveries or unrestricted personal flight, but it does show why the modular concept became the stronger commercialization story.
