For most campers, the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the best overall SUV for camping. It combines 9.5 inches of ground clearance, standard Symmetrical AWD, 3,500 pounds of towing capacity, crossover-like road manners, and up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded. The redesigned 2026 model also provides 34.6 cubic feet behind the second row, giving it useful space for camping gear even when the rear seats remain in place. See Subaru’s 2026 Outback brochure for configuration details.
Choose the 2026 Toyota 4Runner instead if difficult trails, low-range four-wheel drive, body-on-frame construction, or frequent towing matter more than crossover comfort. The 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser is the premium overlanding choice, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport is the strongest family-and-towing compromise, and the 2026 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands is the best compact option for narrow trails and smaller loads.

1. 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness: best SUV for camping overall
The Outback Wilderness is the most complete choice for the typical camper who uses one vehicle for commuting, road trips, established campgrounds, forest roads, and occasional nights sleeping inside. It offers more sleeping and packing practicality than the compact Bronco Sport, more comfortable everyday proportions than a traditional body-on-frame SUV, and enough clearance and traction equipment for moderately rough access roads.
- Ground clearance: 9.5 inches.
- Drivetrain: standard Symmetrical AWD.
- Maximum towing: 3,500 pounds.
- Maximum cargo volume: 80.5 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks lowered.
- Cargo behind the second row: 34.6 cubic feet on the redesigned 2026 model.
The large, relatively wagon-like cargo area is the Outback’s biggest camping advantage. It can carry bedding, a cooler, cooking equipment, and recovery supplies without requiring a trailer for ordinary weekend trips. The lower roof and longer body also make it easier to load than a taller SUV, although the exact interior dimensions and sleeping length still need to be checked in the specific vehicle.
The Wilderness is not an alternative to a dedicated 4WD SUV on every trail. Ground clearance is only one part of off-road performance; tire design, approach and departure angles, underbody protection, drivetrain behavior, vehicle weight, recovery points, and driver judgment matter too. It is best understood as a capable crossover for gravel, snow, mud, rutted roads, and moderate trails—not as a substitute for a low-range, body-on-frame truck when the route includes repeated rock obstacles or severe grades.

Who should buy the Outback Wilderness?
Buy it if you want one vehicle for daily driving and camping, usually travel with one to four people, plan to sleep inside occasionally, and do not need to tow a large camper or boat. It is also the easiest recommendation for buyers who value cargo volume and road-trip usability more than maximum trail hardware.
Consider another SUV if you regularly tow more than 3,500 pounds, need a true low-range transfer case, carry unusually heavy equipment, or expect to spend most of your time on difficult trails.
2. 2026 Toyota 4Runner: best for serious off-road camping
The 4Runner is the better tool when the campsite is reached by a genuinely demanding trail rather than a maintained forest road. Toyota lists up to 10.1 inches of ground clearance, up to 90.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the seats folded, and a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. Those figures make it the strongest all-round choice here for campers who bring bulky equipment, tow a small-to-medium trailer, or need more underbody and drivetrain capability than a crossover normally provides.
The 4Runner’s body-on-frame construction, available four-wheel-drive systems, two-speed transfer-case hardware on appropriate configurations, and specialized Trailhunter and TRD Pro grades give it a clearer advantage on rocks, steep climbs, deep ruts, and low-speed technical terrain. Toyota’s 2026 4Runner model information should be checked carefully because capability and equipment vary between trims.

Which 4Runner is right for camping?
A lower or mid-level 4Runner grade may be the sensible choice for campground trips, snow, gravel, and moderate trails. The Trailhunter and TRD Pro are more compelling when their specialized off-road hardware will be used regularly. They can also be expensive and may trade some efficiency, ride comfort, or cargo flexibility for trail capability. Do not pay for an extreme trim solely because it looks suitable for camping.
The 4Runner is the best pick in this comparison for buyers who say, “I want to reach remote campsites even when the road gets ugly.” It is less compelling for someone who spends nearly all of the time on pavement and mainly wants the most efficient, easy-to-load sleeping setup.
3. 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser: best premium SUV for overlanding
The Land Cruiser is the premium rugged alternative. It comes with standard full-time 4WD and a 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain producing 326 net combined horsepower. Toyota lists 6,000 pounds of towing capacity, and available equipment includes locking differentials, Crawl Control, and a 2,400-watt AC inverter. The combination is well suited to remote travel, overlanding equipment, and slow, controlled trail work. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser specifications identify the equipment and availability that should be confirmed by trim.
The Land Cruiser is not ranked first because its strengths are not the same as the Outback’s. It is expensive, its rugged hardware adds complexity and weight, and its published configuration does not make it the most obvious choice for maximizing interior sleeping volume. Buyers are paying for full-time 4WD, trail systems, hybrid torque, towing ability, premium construction, and long-distance remote-travel capability—not simply for a large empty cargo area.
Why choose the Land Cruiser over the 4Runner?
Choose the Land Cruiser when you want a more premium vehicle with standard full-time 4WD and built-in trail equipment, and when the budget supports it. The 4Runner is the more straightforward recommendation for buyers who want maximum cargo flexibility or a specialized trail trim. The Land Cruiser is especially appealing when a 2,400-watt onboard inverter can reduce the need for separate electrical equipment, though an onboard outlet does not eliminate the need to manage battery draw and appliance loads responsibly.
4. 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport: best family-and-towing compromise
The Passport TrailSport is a strong choice for a family that wants meaningful trail equipment without moving all the way to a traditional body-on-frame SUV. Honda lists 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, a V6, 8.3 inches of unladen ground clearance, all-terrain tires, an off-road-tuned suspension, skid plates, recovery hooks, and multiple trail-oriented drive modes. The Passport specifications and trim comparison are the place to verify which equipment is standard on the exact vehicle.
Its two-row layout is useful for family camping because it leaves no third-row seating mechanism consuming space. The Passport should have enough room for ordinary luggage, coolers, and campsite supplies, but its published ground clearance is below the Outback Wilderness, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser. That makes it a better match for gravel roads, snow, sand, and moderate trails than for repeated technical obstacles.
The Passport’s 5,000-pound tow rating is a meaningful advantage over the Outback and Bronco Sport. It still does not mean every 5,000-pound trailer is a sensible match. Passengers, cargo, tongue weight, hitch equipment, trailer brakes, and the vehicle’s payload label all count against the real-world limit.

Who should buy the Passport TrailSport?
Buy it if you need a roomy two-row family vehicle, want to tow a small camper or boat, and expect most camping access roads to be less extreme than the trails chosen by a 4Runner or Land Cruiser owner. It is a rational middle ground when the Outback’s tow rating is too low but a body-on-frame SUV would be more off-road vehicle than you need.
5. 2026 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands: best compact camping SUV
The Bronco Sport Badlands is the compact pick for narrow trails, small campsites, and drivers who value maneuverability over interior sleeping room. Ford lists up to 8.8 inches of ground clearance with available all-terrain tires, up to 24 inches of water-fording capability, and 2,700 pounds of towing for Badlands models with the required package. Ford’s Bronco Sport model information should be checked for the exact tire, tow-package, and trail-equipment configuration.
The smaller footprint can be a genuine advantage on tight access roads and in compact campsites. The trade-off is straightforward: the Bronco Sport has less cargo and interior sleeping space than the midsize SUVs above. It is better suited to one or two campers with compact gear than to a family bringing bulky bedding, bikes, cooking equipment, and several days of supplies.
Do not confuse the Badlands’ water-fording figure with permission or preparation to drive through any water crossing. Water depth, current, submerged obstacles, entry speed, weather, and the condition of the road all matter. A published maximum is not a guarantee of safe passage.
Which SUV is best for sleeping inside?
Start with the Outback Wilderness and 4Runner because their published maximum cargo volumes are the most promising in this group: 80.5 cubic feet for the Outback and 90.2 cubic feet for the 4Runner with the seats folded. However, those numbers measure volume, not a flat, uninterrupted bed. The usable sleeping area depends on the length and width of the load floor, wheel-well intrusion, seatback angle, front-seat position, trim-specific equipment, and whether a moonroof or other hardware reduces headroom. Subaru and Toyota’s published cargo figures are useful for narrowing the search, not for confirming mattress fit.
Before ordering equipment, measure the vehicle in camping configuration: rear hatch opening, narrowest cargo width, floor length with the front seats positioned for the driver, height to the headliner, and the space occupied by a cooler or storage bins. Also check whether the rear seats fold flat or leave a step. A thin platform can improve sleeping comfort, but it consumes vertical space and may reduce room for gear.
For shoppers who want a quick starting point, an SUV air mattress can make sense—but verify its dimensions, wheel-well fit, valve location, pump requirements, and compatibility with the exact SUV. An air mattress is not a substitute for ventilation, a level sleeping surface, or a safe campsite.
How much towing capacity do you need for camping?
On published maximum ratings, the order is:
- Toyota 4Runner: up to 6,000 pounds.
- Toyota Land Cruiser: 6,000 pounds.
- Honda Passport: 5,000 pounds.
- Subaru Outback Wilderness: 3,500 pounds.
- Ford Bronco Sport Badlands: 2,700 pounds with the required package.
These are maximum manufacturer figures, not a recommendation to tow a trailer at the limit. The trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight, passengers, luggage, accessories, hitch rating, tire ratings, braking equipment, road conditions, and the SUV’s payload label determine what is appropriate. A trailer’s advertised “dry weight” may exclude water, propane, batteries, food, and camping gear.
For a teardrop trailer, compare the fully loaded trailer weight with the SUV’s exact tow rating and confirm the required hitch and wiring. Then confirm tongue weight and payload: tongue weight is carried by the SUV and leaves less capacity for people and cargo. If the numbers are close, choose a lighter trailer or a vehicle with more capacity rather than assuming the published maximum provides a comfortable margin.

AWD versus 4WD for camping
AWD generally manages torque between the wheels or axles automatically and is convenient for changing pavement, rain, snow, gravel, and moderate trail conditions. The Outback Wilderness uses standard Symmetrical AWD, and its clearance and trail-oriented equipment make it substantially more capable than a typical commuter crossover.
4WD usually refers to a system with a selectable transfer case and, on some vehicles, a low-range ratio for controlled travel over steep or technical terrain. The 4Runner and Land Cruiser offer the kind of specialized four-wheel-drive hardware and trail systems that become valuable on rocks, deep ruts, steep descents, and repeated low-speed obstacles. Naming conventions vary, so inspect the exact drivetrain rather than judging by the AWD or 4WD badge alone.

Sleeping and cargo management
A mattress or folding platform is useful only after measuring the vehicle. Keep heavy items low and secured, and avoid stacking gear where it can become a projectile during hard braking. If using the cabin as a bed, reserve a plan for wet or dirty equipment rather than placing everything on the sleeping surface.
When a mattress or platform consumes the interior cargo area, an SUV roof cargo box can preserve cabin space for sleeping. Check the vehicle’s dynamic roof-load limit, the rack and box compatibility, total vehicle height, hatch clearance, and the weight of the loaded box. A hitch cargo carrier is another option, but verify hitch rating, tongue weight, rear-door clearance, license-plate visibility, ground clearance, and departure angle before choosing it.
Power and electronics
The Land Cruiser’s available 2,400-watt AC inverter is a useful built-in capability, but it should not be treated as unlimited power. A separate portable power station for camping can be useful for phones, lights, cameras, laptops, and small appliances. Compare usable battery capacity, continuous and peak output, charging options, weather protection, and temperature limits. Do not assume a particular runtime without matching the station’s capacity to the actual wattage of each device.
Use the vehicle’s 12-volt outlets and inverter only within the manufacturer’s limits. High-draw heating or cooking appliances can drain a battery quickly and may exceed an outlet’s rating. Keep batteries dry, allow ventilation where required, and follow the equipment manufacturer’s charging instructions.
Recovery and tire equipment
A 12-volt tire inflator, tire-pressure gauge, tire plug kit where appropriate, spare-tire tools, and a way to contact help are useful for almost every remote trip. Check the spare tire before departure; an SUV with impressive clearance is still vulnerable to a puncture.
Off-road recovery boards can help a vehicle regain traction in suitable sand, mud, or loose gravel, but they are not a substitute for route judgment, rated recovery points, a compatible recovery strap, or training. Never attach recovery equipment to an unapproved tie-down point, and do not use a winch or recovery strap without understanding the loads involved.
Keeping the interior usable
An all-weather cargo liner protects the load floor from mud, water, and spilled food, but it must match the exact model year and trim. A vehicle awning can provide shade and rain protection at an established campsite, provided it is securely mounted and does not extend into a prohibited area. Model-specific roof racks, hitches, skid plates, and liners need exact compatibility checks; a product advertised for an older model year may not fit the redesigned 2026 vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to inspect before buying a camping SUV
- Measure the sleeping area. Fold the seats, position the front seats for a real driver, and measure the narrowest width and usable length. Check the hatch opening, floor step, headroom, and ventilation plan.
- Read the payload label. Do not estimate payload from the tow rating. Add passengers, fuel, luggage, roof-rack weight, hitch accessories, and tongue weight.
- Verify the exact tow configuration. Confirm trim, engine or hybrid system, hitch equipment, wiring, trailer brakes, tongue-weight limit, and the trailer’s loaded—not dry—weight.
- Check roof limits. Distinguish dynamic roof load while driving from any separately stated static load. Include the rack, tent or box, and all contents.
- Inspect recovery hardware. Look for rated recovery points, suitable tires, underbody protection, a spare tire, and enough clearance for the route. Do not infer all of these from ground-clearance figures.
- Test the actual camping load. Put the cooler, stove, bedding, water, chairs, and clothing in the vehicle before signing. Published cargo volume cannot show whether the gear fits around a sleeping platform.
- Confirm regional equipment and availability. Toyota notes that specifications and equipment can vary by region. Verify the window sticker and owner’s documentation for the vehicle you are actually buying, rather than relying only on a national model page.
Can you sleep overnight in any of these SUVs?
No. An SUV’s ability to hold a mattress does not make overnight parking or sleeping legal. Campground rules, public-land regulations, private-property permission, parking restrictions, local ordinances, weather conditions, and fire regulations apply separately. Confirm that vehicle camping is permitted at the specific location.
For safety, never sleep with the engine running in an enclosed space, and do not operate fuel-burning stoves, heaters, or generators inside the vehicle. Keep ventilation and carbon-monoxide precautions in mind, especially when the hatch is closed and the weather is cold or wet. A vehicle should not be used as a sealed room for combustion appliances.
Which 2026 camping SUV should you buy?
Choose the Subaru Outback Wilderness for the best blend of sleeping space, road-trip comfort, standard AWD, clearance, and moderate towing.
Choose the Toyota 4Runner for difficult trails, low-range four-wheel-drive use, body-on-frame construction, larger towing needs, or a more specialized off-road setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is AWD or 4WD better for camping?
Neither is automatically better. AWD is convenient for snow, gravel, rain, and moderate trails, while a 4WD system with a two-speed transfer case and low range is more useful for steep, rocky, deeply rutted, or technical terrain. Tires, clearance, recovery points, underbody protection, and driver skill matter just as much as the drivetrain label.
Recommended Free Tools
Can these SUVs tow a teardrop camper?
Yes, some can, provided the fully loaded trailer, tongue weight, passengers, cargo, hitch, brakes, and tires remain within the exact vehicle’s limits. The 4Runner and Land Cruiser list up to 6,000 pounds, the Passport 5,000, the Outback Wilderness 3,500, and the Bronco Sport Badlands 2,700 with the required package. Those maximums are configuration-dependent and should not be treated as a target.
Which of these SUVs is best for sleeping inside?
The Outback Wilderness and 4Runner are the strongest starting points based on their published maximum cargo volumes, at 80.5 and 90.2 cubic feet respectively. Actual comfort depends on load-floor length, width, seat position, wheel wells, trim equipment, and the sleeping platform. Measure the specific vehicle before purchasing a mattress.
Can I sleep overnight anywhere if my SUV fits a mattress?
No. Sleeping inside a vehicle is subject to campground rules, public-land regulations, private-property permission, local parking laws, weather, and site-specific restrictions. Check the exact location. Never run the engine or use a fuel-burning appliance inside an enclosed vehicle while sleeping.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, get the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness. It offers the most useful balance of cargo space, sleeping practicality, everyday usability, standard AWD, clearance, and moderate towing. Move to the 2026 Toyota 4Runner for serious trails or heavier towing, the Land Cruiser for premium overlanding hardware, the Passport TrailSport for family towing, or the Bronco Sport Badlands for compact trail access. Whichever you choose, verify the exact payload, roof-load, hitch, tire, and cargo dimensions before building the camping setup.
