Dorman’s 628-040 is the better choice when you want upholstery hardware and pliers included, Metra/Install Bay’s IBHS1 is a useful trim-to-fit carbon-fiber alternative, and EchoMaster is the two-seat option to consider.
These kits require more than connecting a 12-volt accessory. Seat construction, upholstery retention, occupancy sensors, airbags, fuse protection, and switch installation determine whether a particular kit is appropriate.

For a permanent retrofit, the Rostra ComfortHeat 250-1900 is the best-documented overall choice. It is a single-seat, dual-element kit with a fused harness, separate temperature sensors, trim guidance, and a three-position high/low/off switch. The universal heated seat kit category also includes worthwhile alternatives: Dorman’s 628-040 is the most complete one-seat kit for DIY upholstery work, Metra/Install Bay’s IBHS1 is a strong trim-to-fit carbon-fiber option, and EchoMaster offers a two-seat kit with full-pad or split-pad configurations.
These are not plug-in seat cushions. Permanent kits typically require removing the seat, separating the upholstery from the foam, positioning heating elements beneath the covering, routing fused 12-volt wiring, and mounting a switch. Fitment depends on the seat covering, retention hardware, airbags, occupancy sensors, and the vehicle’s electrical and restraint systems. No aftermarket kit should be treated as guaranteed to fit every vehicle.

Our picks
Best overall: Rostra ComfortHeat 250-1900
Rostra’s ComfortHeat 250-1900 is the strongest benchmark when technical documentation matters more than the lowest purchase price or the fastest installation. It is a single-seat system containing two trimmable carbon-fiber heating elements: one measuring approximately 9 by 19 inches for the cushion and one for the seat back. The kit includes locking harness connectors, a fused primary power harness, a switch-extension harness, insulating tape, cable ties, and high-temperature adhesive.
The control is a three-position high/low/off switch. Rostra publishes approximate temperatures of 91°F on low and 127°F on high. Those are manufacturer-provided figures, not a promise that every installation or vehicle will reach exactly those temperatures. The kit also uses separate temperature sensors for the cushion and back and continuously monitors temperature, which is more useful than judging the system solely by its switch positions.
Its trimming instructions are unusually important. The elements may be shortened only at the specified locations. Rostra says not to remove more than one-third of the pad’s overall length, requires any exposed carbon-fiber portion to be covered with the supplied cloth tape, and warns never to fold a heating pad over itself. A folded element can create excessive heat.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The trade-off is strict compatibility screening. Rostra says installation is not recommended where the seat covering is bonded to the foam, where metal rings or rods retaining the covering could touch the heating element, or where a passenger seat has an occupancy-detection sensor that could be affected by the pad. Those restrictions make the Rostra a well-documented choice—not a universal guarantee.
Best complete one-seat kit: Dorman 628-040
Dorman’s 628-040 is the practical choice when you want upholstery hardware included in the box. The one-seat package contains bottom and back heating pads, a control switch, wiring harness, zip ties, installation instructions, 15 hog rings, and pliers. Dorman lists a 63-watt rating, a 3.9-amp rating, and an 83-inch wiring harness.
The included automotive upholstery hog ring pliers are useful because the original seat covering may be secured with hog rings. Buyers choosing another kit may need to purchase seat upholstery installation tools separately, although Dorman already supplies the basic pliers and rings for this kit.
Dorman describes the heater as universal and suitable for most vehicles and different upholstery types. Read that as broad application guidance, not literal compatibility with every seat. The installer must still determine whether the covering can be removed and reinstalled, whether retention hardware can contact the heating pad, and whether the seat contains airbags, occupancy sensors, position sensors, or other wiring that the retrofit could disturb.

Best trim-to-fit carbon-fiber alternative: Metra/Install Bay IBHS1
The Install Bay IBHS1, listed by Metra, is a single-seat kit with two carbon-fiber elements measuring approximately 18 by 9 inches. Each element is rated at about 25 watts on 12 volts. The elements can be trimmed for the cushion and back, and the kit includes an illuminated three-position high/low/off switch.

- AFTER-SALES SERVICE: If you have any questions about the car seat cushion, please contact us and we will do our best to find the best solution for you!
Metra also specifies an electronic auto-off temperature-safety system and a one-year limited warranty. That makes the IBHS1 appealing to buyers who want a relatively simple carbon-fiber element design and an automatic temperature shutoff feature. It remains an under-upholstery installation, however, so “trim-to-fit” does not mean that the pad can be cut anywhere, folded, or placed over seat hardware.
Metra’s product information carries a California Proposition 65 warning. That warning should not be silently omitted when the product is featured. It is also sensible to verify current stock before choosing the IBHS1, since aftermarket catalog availability can change.
Best for two seats: EchoMaster Universal Kit
EchoMaster’s universal kit is designed for two seats rather than one. Its full-pad configuration is intended for fixed-back bucket seats, while the split-pad configuration is intended for seats with separate cushions and backs. Confirm the configuration before ordering: a two-seat label does not by itself tell you whether the package matches your seat construction.
Quadratec’s listing describes carbon-fiber mats, illuminated high/low/off switches, wiring for two seats, a one-year limited warranty, and an estimated three- to four-hour installation. It rates the installation as advanced. That time is a product-listing estimate, not a universal promise; seat upholstery, powered-seat mechanisms, airbags, and wiring access can make the job substantially easier or harder.
Install Bay’s catalog also identifies single-seat and five-position variants, replacement switches, and harness components. Some replacement harness and XL bulk products are identified as discontinued in the catalog, so check current availability rather than assuming that every replacement part remains orderable.
How to choose the right kit for your vehicle
1. Inspect the seat covering before buying
A permanent heater normally goes between the upholstery and the foam. That means the covering must be removable and capable of being reattached securely. A covering bonded to the foam is a major warning sign: removing it may damage the seat or prevent a proper refit.
Look for the way the upholstery is retained through the cushion. Metal rings, rods, listing wires, and similar hardware must not press into or contact a heating element. A pad that is cut around one obstruction but still touches another is not correctly installed.
If you cannot identify how the upholstery is attached, do not assume that a generic kit will solve the problem. An automotive upholstery professional can assess the seat before you purchase parts.

2. Identify airbags and sensors
Modern seats may contain side airbags, passenger-occupancy sensors, seat-position sensors, seat-belt wiring, and powered-seat electronics. Rostra specifically warns that its heating elements can interfere with occupancy-detection sensors and does not recommend installing the system on a seat with that type of sensor.
That warning is especially important for a passenger seat. Use the vehicle service information to identify the sensors and connectors before disturbing the seat. If the seat has a side airbag, occupancy sensor, or complicated powered-seat harness, have the work assessed by a qualified installer rather than treating the job as ordinary accessory wiring.
3. Decide between one seat and two
A one-seat kit generally contains two heating elements: one for the cushion and one for the back. A two-seat kit generally contains four elements plus separate wiring branches or controls. Verify the actual package contents before ordering. “Universal” describes the intended range of applications; it does not mean that one box automatically heats both front seats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want heat only for the driver, a one-seat kit avoids paying for unused elements and simplifies wiring. For both front seats, a purpose-built two-seat package such as the EchoMaster configuration is usually a clearer starting point than combining unrelated single-seat kits.
4. Consider the control layout
High/low/off is the most common control arrangement. Rostra uses a three-position switch, and Metra specifies an illuminated three-position switch. Some Install Bay variants use five-position controls. An illuminated switch makes it easier to see whether the heater is active, but it may require drilling or adapting a mounting location.
Do not assume that a universal kit will work with the vehicle’s original heated-seat switch or factory infotainment controls. The researched product information does not establish plug-and-play compatibility with every original switch. A factory-style installation may require additional electrical and trim work.
5. Plan the electrical connection
These systems commonly require an ignition-switched 12-volt supply, chassis ground, fuse protection, and a dedicated switch. Rostra’s 250-1900 includes a fused primary harness and requires ignition power and ground. Dorman lists a wiring harness and specifies 63 watts and 3.9 amps.

Do not select a fuse rating by guesswork, substitute a higher-rated fuse to stop nuisance blowing, or connect a seat heater to an unknown circuit simply because it is nearby. If the supplied fuse hardware is damaged or missing, an automotive inline fuse holder may be relevant as a replacement or supplementary component, but the fuse type and rating must follow the heater manufacturer’s instructions.

What installation involves
This is an advanced retrofit for many vehicles. The work can include seat removal, upholstery removal, foam preparation, pad placement, harness routing, switch mounting, and checks of the restraint systems. The order below is a planning framework, not a substitute for the kit instructions or the vehicle’s repair procedure.
- Inspect and document the seat. Photograph the upholstery attachments, wiring routes, connectors, and seat hardware. Confirm that the covering is removable and that no retaining rod or ring will contact the pad.
- Follow the vehicle’s SRS and seat-removal procedure. If the seat contains an airbag or occupancy sensor, use the manufacturer’s service information. Do not probe, modify, or casually disconnect restraint-system wiring.
- Expose the foam and plan pad placement. The cushion and back elements should sit flat beneath the upholstery, away from metal retention hardware and other points that could pinch or abrade them.
- Trim only where permitted. For Rostra’s elements, use the specified trimming locations, remove no more than one-third of the overall length, cover exposed carbon fiber with the supplied cloth tape, and never fold the pad over itself. Apply the same principle of following the exact instructions to any other kit.
- Reattach the upholstery without compressing the pad. Restore the original retention method. A hog ring or rod that presses into a heating element is an installation failure, not a minor fitment issue.
- Route and secure the harness. Keep wiring clear of seat tracks, hinges, sharp edges, hot components, and moving mechanisms. Leave enough controlled slack for the seat’s normal adjustment without allowing the harness to hang or pinch.
- Connect power, ground, and the switch. Use the specified ignition-switched source and fuse protection. Mount the switch where it can be reached without interfering with the driver’s controls or the seat’s movement.
- Test before regular use. Check switch operation and heating operation according to the instructions, then inspect the wiring and connectors. Recheck the seat’s full range of movement and confirm that no warning light is present.
The EchoMaster listing’s three-to-four-hour estimate illustrates the scale of the job but should not be used as a promise. A straightforward older seat may take less time; a modern powered seat with airbags and sensors may require much more.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to hire a professional
Professional installation is the better choice when the seat has a side airbag, passenger-occupancy sensor, powered adjustment with complex wiring, bonded upholstery, unknown metal retention hardware, or a covering you are not confident removing and reinstalling.
Recommended Free Tools
A qualified heated seat installation service or automotive upholstery installer can evaluate the seat before any pad is purchased. That assessment is particularly valuable because a kit that is inexpensive on paper can become a poor project once seat disassembly, upholstery repair, wiring diagnosis, or SRS fault-code work is included.
Safety and regulatory points
Do not treat an aftermarket kit as NHTSA-approved
FMVSS 302 addresses the flammability of materials in completed new motor vehicles, including materials used in seat cushions and seat backs. NHTSA explains that it does not approve or certify vehicles or equipment; manufacturers generally use a self-certification process.
Accordingly, do not describe an aftermarket heated-seat kit as “NHTSA approved.” If a manufacturer says that a product is FMVSS 302 compliant, attribute that statement to the manufacturer and do not turn it into a claim of official NHTSA approval. Aftermarket modifications also must not knowingly render inoperative a safety device or element of the vehicle’s design.
Take temperature sensitivity seriously
Rostra does not recommend its systems for occupants with reduced temperature sensitivity, including children, elderly people, or people with partial or full loss of sensitivity. A person who cannot reliably feel heat may not notice an uncomfortable or hazardous temperature soon enough. The heater should not be treated as medical treatment or as a substitute for normal supervision.
Stop if the vehicle reports a restraint fault
After the seat is reinstalled, check for airbag or occupancy-system warning lights before regular driving. If a warning appears, stop using the retrofit until the vehicle is properly diagnosed. Also confirm that the seat moves normally, wiring is secure and clear of the tracks, fuse protection is correct, and the occupant-restraint systems operate normally.

Basic troubleshooting after installation
- No heat from either element: switch the system off and check the ignition-switched feed, ground, fuse, harness connectors, and switch connection against the kit instructions.
- The cushion works but the back does not, or vice versa: inspect the relevant branch connector and element wiring. Do not bypass the kit’s sensors or protection features.
- The fuse opens repeatedly: turn the system off and find the cause. Do not install a larger fuse. Look for pinched wiring, a damaged element, an incorrect connection, or a short.
- Heat seems concentrated or unusually high: stop using the heater and inspect for a folded pad, incorrect placement, damaged insulation, exposed carbon fiber, or pressure from upholstery hardware.
- An airbag or occupancy warning appears: do not keep testing the heater as though it were only an electrical accessory. Have the restraint system diagnosed using vehicle-appropriate procedures.
Final buying decision
Choose the Rostra ComfortHeat 250-1900 if you want the most thoroughly documented single-seat retrofit and your seat passes the compatibility checks. Choose the Dorman 628-040 if included hog rings and pliers make the complete package more useful. Choose the Metra/Install Bay IBHS1 if trim-to-fit carbon-fiber elements, an illuminated switch, and electronic auto-off are your priorities. Choose EchoMaster when you need two seats and can match its full-pad or split-pad design to the vehicle.
The right purchase is ultimately determined by the seat, not the word “universal” on the box. Inspect the upholstery and retention hardware, identify airbags and occupancy sensors, plan the fused ignition-switched connection, and hire a professional when the seat’s construction or restraint wiring is uncertain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are aftermarket heated seat kits easy to install?
No. A permanent retrofit generally requires removing the seat and upholstery, placing heating elements beneath the covering, routing fused 12-volt wiring, and installing a switch. A plug-in cushion is a different, less integrated product category.
Does a one-seat heated-seat kit heat both the cushion and the back?
Usually, a one-seat kit includes two elements: one for the seat cushion and one for the back. A two-seat kit generally includes four elements, but package contents vary, so verify the listing before buying.
Can I install a retrofit heater in the passenger seat?
Do not assume it is compatible. Rostra specifically does not recommend its system for a passenger seat with an occupancy-detection sensor that could be affected by the heating element. Seats with side airbags, occupancy sensors, or complex wiring should be assessed using vehicle service information or by a qualified installer.
Are aftermarket heated seat kits NHTSA approved?
No. NHTSA does not approve or certify individual aftermarket equipment in the way that phrase suggests. A manufacturer’s claim that a product meets FMVSS 302 should not be rewritten as official NHTSA approval.
Can I cut a heated-seat pad to any size?
Trim only at the locations specified by the kit manufacturer. Rostra limits removal to no more than one-third of the pad’s overall length, requires exposed carbon fiber to be covered with supplied cloth tape, and prohibits folding the pad over itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should a professional install an aftermarket heated seat kit?
Hire a professional if the seat has a side airbag, passenger-occupancy sensor, bonded upholstery, powered-seat wiring, or unknown metal retention hardware. After installation, check for warning lights, safe seat movement, secure wiring, correct fuse protection, and normal restraint-system operation.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Rostra ComfortHeat 250-1900, provided the seat has compatible upholstery and no conflicting occupancy-sensor arrangement. Best complete DIY package: Dorman 628-040. Best two-seat option: EchoMaster’s correctly matched full- or split-pad kit. None should be installed without vehicle-specific fitment and safety checks.
