Apple has previewed a major CarPlay expansion for iOS 27: supported apps will be able to let drivers and passengers browse and play video on the vehicle’s CarPlay display—but only when the vehicle is parked. It is not an unrestricted in-car streaming feature, and updating an iPhone will not automatically add it to every CarPlay-equipped vehicle.
What is new in Apple CarPlay?
The new capability is video browsing and playback through CarPlay in supported parked vehicles. Apple’s WWDC26 developer presentation describes apps that can provide a browsing interface on the CarPlay screen, allowing users to select and watch content without starting the browsing process on the iPhone.

How it differs from AirPlay video
| Capability | How it works |
|---|---|
| AirPlay video | You start playback on the iPhone and select a compatible vehicle display as the destination. |
| CarPlay video app | You browse supported content from a dedicated interface on the CarPlay display, then play it while parked. |
| CarPlay Ultra | A separate, deeper vehicle integration that can extend across the instrument cluster and other displays and expose vehicle controls. |
These are related technologies, but they are not interchangeable. A car that can receive basic AirPlay video is not automatically confirmed to support the newer CarPlay video-app experience.
Video is not available while driving
No—this is a parked-media feature. Apple’s presentation repeatedly frames video playback around situations in which the vehicle is not being driven. Drivers should not interpret the announcement as permission to watch video on the front display while moving.
If video disappears or becomes unavailable when the vehicle starts moving, that may be an intentional safety restriction rather than a fault. Passengers should also avoid assuming that playback will remain available in motion unless the automaker and Apple explicitly document that behavior for a particular vehicle system.
Will every CarPlay car get it?
No universal rollout has been confirmed. Apple says CarPlay video apps appear only in vehicles that support its “video in the car” capability. That makes the feature dependent on more than the iPhone and the app.

Compatibility may depend on:
- The vehicle’s infotainment hardware and software.
- Automaker approval or enablement.
- Support for video through AirPlay.
- The iPhone’s iOS version.
- The app’s CarPlay entitlement and implementation.
- Model year, trim, region, or manufacturer-specific restrictions.
Apple’s developer session specifically says that an app with the required CarPlay entitlement appears on the CarPlay home screen only when the connected vehicle supports video in the car. An iOS update alone therefore cannot guarantee access.
What will you need?
In practical terms, users will need all of the following:
- An iPhone running the iOS version that supports the feature.
- A vehicle with ordinary Apple CarPlay.
- A vehicle specifically enabled for video in the car.
- A video app that supports both AirPlay video streaming and CarPlay browsing.
- A stationary vehicle.
Apple’s cited public materials do not establish a universal iPhone model cutoff for the CarPlay video capability. Do not assume that the iPhone requirements for CarPlay Ultra, Apple Intelligence, or another feature also apply here.
Will Netflix, YouTube, or Disney+ work?
There is no confirmed universal list of compatible consumer video services in the Apple material cited here. Apple has documented the platform and entitlement requirements, but each provider must decide whether to build or enable a CarPlay experience.

Actual availability depends on four separate layers:
- Apple: supplies the CarPlay APIs and approval framework.
- The automaker: enables video in the vehicle and its infotainment system.
- The app developer: implements CarPlay browsing and AirPlay video support.
- The content provider: permits playback under its account, subscription, rights, and regional policies.
Until individual providers make first-party announcements, it is not responsible to promise Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, or any other named service.

Do not confuse it with CarPlay Ultra
CarPlay Ultra is a different product layer. The parked-video feature adds a new app category to supported CarPlay systems. CarPlay Ultra is Apple’s deeper automaker integration, designed to extend CarPlay across multiple vehicle displays, including the instrument cluster, while exposing functions such as climate and radio controls.
Apple began rolling out CarPlay Ultra with Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada on May 15, 2025. The initial Aston Martin implementation required an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. Those requirements apply to that CarPlay Ultra rollout—not automatically to iOS 27 CarPlay video.

CarPlay Ultra requires compatible vehicle hardware, software, and automaker integration. It is not a software toggle that turns ordinary CarPlay into the next-generation system.
How this compares with iOS 26 CarPlay
iOS 26 brought a broad interface and usability update to CarPlay, including a new appearance, compact incoming-call notifications, Tapbacks, pinned Messages conversations, widgets, and Live Activities. Apple also said those improvements extend to CarPlay Ultra.
The iOS 27 video capability is different. It introduces a new parked-media category and requires specific vehicle support rather than simply refreshing the standard CarPlay interface. Apple’s WWDC26 presentation also previewed other developer-platform changes, including voice-based conversational apps, Voice Control templates, a new MiniPlayer, enhanced lists, more flexible navigation panels, and route sharing between navigation apps and supported vehicles. Their visibility to consumers will depend on app and automaker adoption.
What to do if the feature does not appear
- Confirm ordinary CarPlay works. If the vehicle does not support CarPlay, its display cannot provide this feature through CarPlay.
- Check the automaker’s documentation. Look for explicit references to video in the car, not merely “Apple CarPlay” or “wireless CarPlay.”
- Update the iPhone and apps. Install the relevant iOS release and current versions of any supported video apps when available.
- Check for an infotainment update. Some vehicles may require a manufacturer software update or dealer activation.
- Test only while parked. A feature that is unavailable once the vehicle moves may be behaving as designed.
- Do not assume an aftermarket receiver qualifies. Standard wired or wireless CarPlay support does not prove compatibility with video in the car.
What about aftermarket receivers?
Aftermarket receivers from companies such as Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, and JVC can add or upgrade ordinary wired or wireless CarPlay in compatible vehicles. However, Apple’s cited documentation does not confirm that generic aftermarket receivers support the new video-in-the-car capability.

That means buying a wireless adapter or receiver specifically for parked CarPlay video is risky until both Apple and the hardware manufacturer confirm support for the exact product and vehicle combination.
Existing alternatives
Some vehicles may already support parked video through AirPlay or a manufacturer-built entertainment system. Those systems can have different app catalogs, connectivity requirements, and restrictions.
Recommended Free Tools
For families who need entertainment while the vehicle is moving, rear-seat entertainment may be more appropriate than the front CarPlay display. Built-in rear screens and manufacturer-approved systems are separate from CarPlay and vary by vehicle.
The buying decision
This is not currently a straightforward accessory upgrade. If the feature matters when choosing a car, verify all of the following with the automaker:
- The exact make, model year, trim, and infotainment system.
- Your market or region.
- Whether video in the car is supported or planned.
- Whether an infotainment update or dealer activation is required.
- Which apps and playback conditions are supported.
Do not treat ordinary CarPlay compatibility as proof that the vehicle will receive parked video. Likewise, do not buy a new car, receiver, wireless adapter, or streaming subscription solely on the assumption that the feature will work.
Bottom line
Apple’s major new CarPlay feature is parked video browsing and playback in supported vehicles. It is a genuine expansion of CarPlay beyond navigation, messaging, and audio, but it is not a universal iOS upgrade and it is not CarPlay Ultra. Whether you can use it will depend on Apple’s software, your automaker’s vehicle support, and the individual video app—not on the iPhone update alone.
