Why the Toyota RAV4 matters most outside the truck market
The RAV4 was the best-selling non-pickup vehicle in the country and the best-selling SUV. Its 479,288 sales put it 75,520 units ahead of the Honda CR-V, the No. 2 non-pickup and No. 2 SUV.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That distinction matters because “best-selling car” is often used loosely. The RAV4 is not a passenger car in the traditional sedan sense; it is a compact crossover SUV. The Toyota Camry was the top-selling sedan, ranking ninth overall with 316,185 sales.
What the ranking says about the U.S. vehicle market
Pickups still control the top of the chart
Four of the first six entries are pickup lines: the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, Ram Pickup, and GMC Sierra. Together, they account for more than 2.1 million reported sales. General Motors separately said Chevrolet and GMC achieved their best combined full-size-pickup sales in 20 years and that GM led the U.S. full-size pickup segment.
There is an important comparability issue, however. These are not all single models in the narrow sense. Each truck result combines multiple related versions and, in some cases, multiple classes of truck.
Compact and midsize SUVs fill much of the rest of the list
Beyond the four truck families, the top 25 is dominated by crossovers and SUVs. The RAV4, CR-V, Equinox, Model Y, Tucson, Explorer, Rogue, Grand Cherokee, Trax, Crosstrek, Sportage, Forester, and Outback all appear in the ranking.
This broad SUV presence is more meaningful than any single position: buyers continue to favor vehicles that combine a higher seating position and flexible cargo space with the footprint and running costs of a passenger vehicle.
Sedans have not disappeared
The Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic all reached the top 12. The Camry was the only sedan in the top 10, but its 316,185 sales still placed it ahead of the Toyota Tacoma, Corolla, Civic, and every vehicle below it.
Rank #3
- Bosch Workshop Engine Air Filters are constructed with a high number of pleats for robust particle holding capacity
- 98% filtration efficiency in removing small particles from incoming air to guard against engine wear
- High velocity cellulose cured media provides minimum air resistance and ensures even pleat distance for optimum efficiency
- Polyurethane foam seal provides elasticity and sealing performance, while protecting against water and heat intrusion into the air intake system
- All features combined ensure only the cleanest air for strong engine protection, high-performance, and better fuel efficiency
In other words, the market is SUV-heavy rather than sedan-free. High-volume traditional cars remain important, particularly the Camry, Corolla, and Civic.
Electrified versions are increasingly part of high-volume nameplates
The list includes the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, but electrification is also represented inside conventional high-volume vehicle lines. Toyota reported 1,183,248 electrified-vehicle sales in the U.S. in 2025, equal to 47.0% of its total U.S. sales volume. That category includes Toyota’s hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, battery-electric, and fuel-cell vehicles under the company’s reporting approach.
Ford reported 228,072 hybrid vehicles overall, including 84,934 F-150 Hybrids. The Ford Maverick also continued to gain momentum: Ford reported a record 155,051 Mavericks, up 18.2%, with 81,034 Maverick Hybrids sold.
Hyundai reported 2025 records for several vehicles, including the Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, Elantra, IONIQ 5, and Venue. The Tucson’s 234,230 sales placed it 13th overall.
How to interpret the truck and Equinox totals
These totals are useful—but not perfectly like-for-like
The ranking is a commercial sales ranking of vehicle nameplates and vehicle lines. It is not a comparison of identically sized, identically powered individual models.

Why some Equinox lists show a lower number
Kelley Blue Book lists the Chevrolet Equinox at 332,301 units and ranks it seventh because the total combines the gas-powered Equinox and Equinox EV.
Car and Driver reports 274,356 sales for the conventional Equinox and identifies 57,945 Equinox EV sales separately. Those numbers add up exactly to 332,301. Neither figure is necessarily wrong; they cover different scopes. The KBB ranking uses the combined vehicle-line total, while the Car and Driver figure isolates the gas model.

Sales volume can show what many U.S. buyers purchased, how broadly a manufacturer distributed a vehicle, and which nameplates have substantial market presence. It can also be useful when considering factors such as dealer availability, parts supply, accessory selection, and resale-market familiarity.
It does not prove that a vehicle is the safest, most reliable, most efficient, or best value. A sales ranking is not a reliability survey, safety test, road test, or ownership-cost analysis. The best choice for an individual buyer still depends on price, incentives, fuel or charging needs, space, towing requirements, expected maintenance, insurance, and the specific trim and powertrain.

Bottom line
America’s 2025 sales leader was the Ford F-Series, but the result should be read as a truck-family victory rather than proof that the F-150 alone outsold every other vehicle. Chevrolet’s Silverado, Ram Pickup, and GMC Sierra reinforce the continuing strength of full-size pickups.

The Toyota RAV4 was the clearest non-truck story: it was the best-selling SUV and the best-selling non-pickup by a wide margin over the Honda CR-V. SUVs occupied most of the remaining top 25, while the Camry, Corolla, and Civic showed that sedans still attract substantial demand. Finally, hybrids and EVs are no longer confined to low-volume niches; they are increasingly included within the high-volume vehicle families Americans already buy.
