10 Used Cars With the Lowest Maintenance Costs: A RepairPal-Based Shortlist

RepairPal’s averages put the Toyota Yaris, Corolla, Civic, and Fit among the strongest low-cost used-car choices. Here is what the numbers include, what they leave out, and what to inspect before buying.

Short answer: Based on currently published RepairPal averages, the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Honda Fit are the strongest starting points for buyers focused on low routine repair and maintenance costs. The larger Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Honda CR-V add space and practicality, while the Lexus ES 250, Toyota Prius, and Mazda3 serve buyers who prioritize comfort, fuel economy, or driving enjoyment.

RepairPal’s reported annual averages for these 10 models range from $333 to $433, compared with $652 per year across all vehicles. But this is a data-informed shortlist, not a definitive ranking of every used car. RepairPal averages span multiple model years and do not provide a quote for a particular vehicle, mileage, trim, drivetrain, climate, or owner. The condition and service history of the individual car can matter more than a small difference between two model-level averages.

The 10 used cars at a glance

Rank Model RepairPal annual average Reliability or comparison detail Best suited to
1 Toyota Yaris $333 4.5/5; first among RepairPal subcompact cars Simple, inexpensive commuting
2 Toyota Corolla $362 4.5/5; first among 36 compact cars General-purpose low-cost ownership
3 Honda Civic $368 Low average repair costs; Honda brand rated 4.0/5 Refinement, space, and body-style variety
4 Toyota Camry $388 4.0/5; below-average midsize repair frequency and severity Quiet, roomy sedan transportation
5 Honda Fit $390 4.5/5; fourth among RepairPal subcompacts Maximum interior flexibility in a small car
6 Lexus ES 250 $393 RepairPal cost figure; do not generalize to every ES generation Comfort without typical European-luxury service costs
7 Honda Accord $400 4.5/5; first among 24 midsize cars More passenger and highway space
8 Honda CR-V $407 4.5/5; second among 26 compact SUVs Cargo space and an elevated seating position
9 Toyota Prius $408 4.0/5; repairs somewhat more frequent but often minor High-mileage driving and fuel savings
10 Mazda3 $433 4.0/5; 0.3 repair visits per year Drivers who want more engaging handling

Figures are RepairPal reported average annual repair-and-maintenance costs across all model years in its cited model pages and comparisons. They are not guaranteed future costs or complete ownership costs.

What the RepairPal numbers actually mean

RepairPal defines the annual cost figure as the average total cost of unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years. Its reliability methodology also considers repair frequency and severity. That distinction matters: a vehicle can have higher repair bills because its parts or labor are more expensive without necessarily being less reliable overall.

The figures do not represent a manufacturer’s scheduled-maintenance plan or a five-year total-cost-of-ownership estimate. They also do not include fuel, insurance, financing, registration, taxes, depreciation, purchase price, tires, or collision repairs unless another source specifically supplies those figures. Edmunds’ True Cost to Own analysis illustrates why a maintenance-only ranking can differ from a total-ownership ranking: depreciation, fuel, insurance, financing, taxes, fees, maintenance, and repairs are separate categories.

For additional context, RepairPal reports average annual repair-and-maintenance costs of $456 for subcompact cars, $526 for compact cars, and $652 across all vehicles. Comparing a model with its relevant body-style class is more useful than treating every vehicle as if it served the same purpose.

1. Toyota Yaris: the lowest reported average cost

The Toyota Yaris leads this shortlist with a reported average annual repair-and-maintenance cost of $333. RepairPal gives it a 4.5/5 reliability rating, ranks it first among the subcompact cars in its comparison, and reports a 6% probability that a repair will be severe.

The Yaris makes the most sense for someone who wants a straightforward, inexpensive commuter and can accept limited interior space and modest power. Its small footprint can also be useful in dense urban areas, but shoppers should not buy it simply because it has the lowest number in the table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important buying caveat: RepairPal lists 23 known recalls across Yaris vehicles, including a master-window-switch overheating recall and airbag-related recalls. Recall counts and affected equipment vary by year, so check the specific vehicle identification number rather than relying on the Yaris nameplate’s reputation.

2. Toyota Corolla: the safest all-around budget recommendation

The Corolla’s RepairPal average is $362 per year. It receives a 4.5/5 reliability rating and ranks first among 36 compact cars in the cited comparison.

Compared with the smallest cars here, the Corolla is a more broadly useful recommendation. It offers a conventional compact-car layout, a large used-car supply, and broad parts availability. That can make it easier to find a suitable example and obtain routine service in many locations.

  • Smog Check Readiness At A Glance – Use the I/M readiness function before a smog check or emissions inspection to see whether your vehicle’s monitors are ready. This OBD2 code scanner helps you confirm if recent repairs have brought the system back to a ready state, reducing the chance of failed inspections, retests, wasted trips, and unnecessary inspection fees
  • Works With Most OBD2 Vehicles – Compatible with most 1996 and newer U.S.-based OBD2 cars, SUVs, and light trucks, as well as many 2000 and newer EU/Asian OBD2 vehicles. Supports major OBDII protocols including CAN, ISO9141, KWP2000, J1850 VPW, and J1850 PWM. This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase

What to check: RepairPal lists recurring reported issues involving EVAP-system check-engine lights and automatic-transmission shift problems at higher mileage. During a pre-purchase evaluation, scan for stored or recently cleared diagnostic codes and pay attention to transmission behavior during cold and warm driving. A lower asking price is not a bargain if the seller has recently cleared a warning light or deferred needed transmission work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Honda Civic: a low-cost compact with more variety

RepairPal reports an average annual cost of $368 for the Civic. It describes the model as having low average repair costs; Honda’s brand-level reliability rating in the cited material is 4.0/5.

The Civic is a strong alternative to the Corolla when the buyer wants better rear-seat usability, more refinement, or a wider choice of body styles and powertrains. It can work as a commuter, first car, or small family car without moving into the operating costs commonly associated with larger or luxury vehicles.

Do not treat every Civic as identical: RepairPal lists reported Civic problems including occupant-position-sensor airbag warnings and engine-mount vibration. The best choice depends heavily on the model year, engine, transmission, accident history, and maintenance records. A Civic with documented servicing and no warning lights is preferable to a neglected example with a slightly lower purchase price.

4. Toyota Camry: inexpensive maintenance in a roomier sedan

The Camry has a reported RepairPal average of $388 per year and a 4.0/5 reliability rating. RepairPal says its repair frequency and severity are below the average for midsize cars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Camry is a sensible choice for shoppers who want a quieter, roomier sedan than a Corolla or Civic without taking on luxury-car service costs. It is particularly attractive for longer commutes and highway use, where additional cabin space and comfort can matter more than the lowest possible repair average.

Age and powertrain still matter: RepairPal lists automatic-transmission hesitation and oxygen-sensor failures among reported Camry problems. On an older Camry, age-related repairs can overwhelm the difference between its $388 average and the lower figures of the compact cars. Check transmission operation, warning lights, cooling-system condition, fluid-service records, rust, and suspension wear.

5. Honda Fit: the small car with unusually useful space

The Honda Fit’s reported annual repair-and-maintenance cost is $390. RepairPal gives it a 4.5/5 reliability rating and places it fourth in its subcompact-car comparison.

The Fit’s main advantage is not simply its cost. Its flexible interior provides unusually useful cargo and seating versatility for such a small exterior, which makes it a strong option for urban buyers, students, and owners who need to carry bulky items occasionally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate 2026 iSeeCars used-car study identified the Fit as the most reliable five-year-old used car for the money. That study reported a remaining lifespan of 10.9 years and an average list price of $18,445 for the five-year-old vehicles it analyzed. Those prices were tied to vehicles listed from July through December 2025, and the study is a value-and-longevity analysis—not a direct maintenance-cost ranking. It should supplement, not replace, an inspection of the specific Fit being considered.

6. Lexus ES 250: a potentially affordable way into luxury comfort

RepairPal reports an average annual cost of $393 for the Lexus ES 250. That makes it a potentially attractive low-maintenance luxury choice for buyers who want a quieter and more comfortable sedan than a typical economy car.

The figure must be interpreted narrowly. It should not be generalized to every ES generation or to every Lexus model. RepairPal’s cost page also lists reports involving premature automatic-transmission failure and head-gasket risk when cooling-system service is neglected.

Buy the exact car, not the badge: verify the model year, engine and transmission, cooling-system history, service records, and inspection results. A well-maintained ES 250 may offer a favorable comfort-to-cost balance, but an older luxury car with deferred maintenance can quickly erase the advantage of its model-level average.

7. Honda Accord: more room without abandoning predictable costs

For buyers who need more passenger space, trunk room, or highway comfort than a Civic or Corolla provides, the Accord is one of the strongest choices on this list. Its average is still well below RepairPal’s all-vehicle benchmark, although the model’s actual ownership costs depend on generation and powertrain.

Generation-specific caution: RepairPal lists ignition-switch no-start problems, shifting issues on some older automatic-transmission applications, and potentially expensive hybrid-battery replacement estimates among reported Accord concerns. Do not assume that every Accord—especially every hybrid and every older automatic—has the same risk profile. Confirm the exact drivetrain and inspect its known service points.

8. Honda CR-V: one of the better low-cost compact SUVs

The CR-V reports an average annual repair-and-maintenance cost of $407 and a 4.5/5 reliability rating. RepairPal ranks it second among 26 compact SUVs in its current comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CR-V is a practical choice for buyers who need cargo space, family usability, and an elevated seating position. Its reported average is higher than those of the small sedans and hatchbacks above, but it buys a different kind of utility.

Inspect the air conditioning and powertrain carefully: RepairPal lists air-conditioning compressor failures and sticky door-lock tumblers among reported CR-V problems. Its repair estimates also show that hybrid high-voltage battery replacement can be a major expense. The exact generation, engine, transmission, and whether the vehicle is a hybrid are essential details when comparing CR-Vs.

9. Toyota Prius: maintenance value plus potential fuel savings

RepairPal reports an average annual cost of $408 for the Prius and gives it a 4.0/5 reliability rating. It notes that Prius repairs occur somewhat more frequently than average but are often minor. The reported probability of a severe repair is 11%, slightly below RepairPal’s all-vehicle benchmark.

The Prius can be especially compelling for a driver who covers many miles because fuel savings may materially affect total ownership cost. Fuel economy, however, is not part of the RepairPal maintenance ranking, so a buyer should evaluate fuel use separately from repair risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hybrid-system inspection is essential: On the cited Prius repair page, RepairPal estimates hybrid-battery replacement at roughly $1,197 to $1,221 and air-conditioning compressor replacement at roughly $1,669 to $1,861. These are repair estimates, not guarantees for every year or location. Check the condition of the hybrid system and whether any battery warranty coverage remains on the particular vehicle.

10. Mazda3: the driving-oriented alternative

The Mazda3 has the highest reported average on this shortlist at $433 per year, but it remains below RepairPal’s $652 all-vehicle benchmark. RepairPal gives it a 4.0/5 reliability rating, ranks it ninth among 36 compact cars, and reports an average of 0.3 repair visits per year—the same frequency as the compact-car average in the cited rating.

The Mazda3 is the strongest choice here for buyers who want more engaging driving dynamics than the typical economy sedan while keeping routine costs in the general compact-car range.

Condition can dominate the ranking: RepairPal lists reported airbag-warning-light issues and vibration associated with motor mounts. Inspect tires, brakes, suspension, rust, and accident damage carefully. A neglected Mazda3 can cost more to put right than a well-maintained Corolla, even though the model averages differ by only $71 per year in this comparison.

Which one should you buy?

If the priority is the lowest likely routine repair burden

Start with the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, or Honda Fit. The Yaris has the lowest reported average, while the Corolla is the more broadly useful compact-car choice. The Civic adds refinement and body-style variety, and the Fit offers exceptional interior flexibility.

If you need more room

Consider the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, or Honda CR-V. The Camry and Accord are sedans; the CR-V provides SUV practicality and cargo flexibility. Their higher averages reflect their larger or more complex formats, not necessarily poor reliability.

If comfort matters most

The Lexus ES 250 is the comfort-focused option, but it requires especially careful year-and-condition screening. Its low average should not be used to assume that every ES or every older luxury example will be inexpensive to own.

If you drive many miles

The Toyota Prius deserves consideration because fuel savings can change the total ownership calculation. Have the hybrid system evaluated and investigate battery warranty eligibility before buying an older example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the most engaging drive

The Mazda3 is the clearest fit. Its average cost is the highest in this group, but the difference between $333 and $433 is modest at the model-average level and may be outweighed by condition, deferred maintenance, tires, brakes, or suspension work on the actual cars you find.

Used-car inspection checklist

Model-level averages are useful for narrowing the search. They cannot determine whether the specific car in front of you has been maintained, abused, flooded, crashed, or stored for long periods. Use this process before agreeing on a price.

  1. Get the VIN before negotiating. The vehicle identification number lets you investigate recalls, title history, mileage records, and reported service before treating the seller’s description as reliable.
  2. Review a vehicle history report, but do not treat it as a mechanical inspection. A report may include title, odometer, total-loss, theft, structural-damage, accident, service, usage, and recall information. CARFAX also warns that not every event is reported. A clean report is useful evidence, not proof that the car is defect-free.
  3. Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup. NHTSA’s tool can show unrepaired recalls associated with a VIN. Recall repairs are generally performed free of charge by the manufacturer’s dealership. This check is free and should be completed even when the model has an excellent reliability reputation.
  4. Use an optional OBD2 scanner for a preliminary diagnostic check. Scan for stored or recently cleared diagnostic codes and confirm that warning lights behave normally. A basic scanner can help identify reasons to walk away or negotiate, but it cannot evaluate the entire vehicle and is not a substitute for a mechanic.
  5. If appropriate, check the conventional 12-volt battery. An optional 12-volt car battery tester can help assess the regular low-voltage battery on a conventional vehicle. It is not a hybrid-battery evaluator and should not be used to claim that a Prius, CR-V hybrid, or Accord hybrid’s high-voltage battery is healthy.
  6. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. Choose a mechanic who is familiar with the model and is not connected to the seller. Ask for an inspection of leaks, warning lights, transmission operation, cooling-system condition, suspension, brakes, tires, rust, flood evidence, accident repairs, and model-specific problem areas. For hybrids, ask specifically for a hybrid-system and battery assessment.
  7. Confirm maintenance records. Look for transmission-fluid service, cooling-system service, timing-belt replacement where applicable, hybrid-system checks, tire age, brake condition, and evidence that recommended work was actually completed. Missing records should increase uncertainty even if the odometer reading is low.
  8. Test-drive the car when cold and fully warmed up. Pay attention to starting, shifting, vibration, hesitation, braking, air-conditioning operation, steering, warning lights, and unusual noises. If the seller refuses a normal test drive or independent inspection, consider that a reason to leave.
  9. Compare several examples. A slightly more expensive car with documented maintenance may be cheaper than a lower-priced car needing tires, brakes, suspension work, fluid service, or immediate diagnostic work. The cheapest listing is not necessarily the cheapest car to own.

Common mistakes when using maintenance-cost rankings

  • Confusing an average with a guarantee: $333 does not mean every Yaris owner will spend $333, and $433 does not mean every Mazda3 will cost exactly $100 more.
  • Ignoring model-year differences: A nameplate can contain multiple engines, transmissions, safety systems, hybrid designs, and recall histories.
  • Comparing unlike vehicles without accounting for use: A Yaris and CR-V do not provide the same passenger or cargo capacity. The CR-V may be the better value for a family even with a higher maintenance average.
  • Skipping the inspection because the badge is reliable: Reliability data describes patterns across many vehicles. It cannot find rust, flood damage, an abused transmission, worn tires, or a recently cleared warning light on one car.
  • Counting only maintenance: Fuel, insurance, depreciation, financing, taxes, registration, tires, and collision costs can change the ownership ranking substantially.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Begin with the Toyota Yaris, Corolla, Honda Civic, or Honda Fit if minimizing routine repair costs is the main goal. Choose the Camry, Accord, or CR-V when you need more room; the Lexus ES 250 for comfort; the Prius for high-mileage fuel efficiency; or the Mazda3 for more enjoyable handling. Whatever model you choose, a documented service history, VIN checks, and an independent inspection matter more than a small difference between RepairPal averages.
