1. 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e 4MATIC: 54 miles

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e 4MATIC has the highest verified electric-only rating in this comparison: 54 miles. That gives it a substantial lead over the next vehicle on the list and makes it the standout choice for a buyer who wants a luxury SUV but hopes to do most local driving without starting the gasoline engine.

The GLC’s large battery gives it unusually strong electric range for a compact luxury SUV. Its all-wheel-drive system also broadens its appeal in regions where traction matters, although all-wheel drive, larger wheels, cold weather, and highway speeds can affect the range a driver actually sees.

Best fit: Luxury-SUV shoppers whose daily driving is generally within 54 miles and who have regular access to charging.

Important qualification: The 54-mile figure is an EPA estimate for the rated configuration. It is not a guarantee that every GLC 350e, or every driver, will achieve 54 miles on battery power.

2. 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid: up to 44 miles

The 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid reaches up to 44 miles of EPA-estimated all-electric range in SE trim. That is the longest electric range in the mainstream, efficiency-focused part of this group and 10 miles more than the next-ranked Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid.

Trim selection changes the result. Toyota lists up to 39 miles for the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium grades. A buyer who chooses a higher trim for its equipment or appearance should therefore not assume the 44-mile SE rating applies.

The Prius is a liftback rather than an SUV, but that shape helps it serve drivers who prioritize commuting efficiency, lower aerodynamic drag, and a relatively compact footprint. It is a particularly strong match for people whose daily trips fall comfortably within the vehicle’s electric range and who do not need SUV seating or cargo height.

Best fit: Commuters who want maximum efficiency in a mainstream car and can accept the SE’s equipment and configuration to get the 44-mile rating.

3. 2026 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid: 37 miles

The 2026 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid is rated for a maximum of 37 miles of all-electric driving. It is one of the more practical choices for shoppers who want a compact crossover and whose regular trips fit within roughly one charge.

The Escape PHEV uses front-wheel drive. That is an important distinction because other Escape powertrains and several competing plug-in SUVs offer all-wheel drive. The front-drive layout may suit buyers focused on efficiency and cost, but it is not the choice for someone who specifically needs PHEV all-wheel-drive traction.

Best fit: Buyers seeking a relatively affordable compact crossover for short daily trips, with gasoline capability available for longer journeys.

4. Lexus NX 450h+ AWD: 37 miles

The Lexus NX 450h+ AWD ties the Escape with 37 miles of all-electric range. It places essentially the same electric-driving capability in a more premium compact-SUV package, with all-wheel drive and a luxury-oriented cabin.

The NX 450h+ makes more sense for shoppers who want Toyota-family plug-in-hybrid technology but do not want a Prius’s liftback format or mainstream interior. Its electric range is competitive with the Escape, while its positioning, equipment, and pricing are different enough that range alone should not determine the choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Luxury-SUV buyers who want all-wheel drive and the ability to handle many routine trips electrically.

Comparison note: The 37-mile figure is the maximum verified nameplate rating in the comparison. Equipment, tires, weather, and driving conditions can affect the result.

5. 2026 Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid: 35 miles

The 2026 Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid offers up to 35 miles of EPA-estimated electric range. It is a premium midsize SUV that combines plug-in capability with more family-oriented space than the compact models above it.

The XC60 is a useful middle ground for a driver who wants more room and a premium presentation but does not need a three-row vehicle. Its electric range trails the Lexus NX 450h+ and Ford Escape by two miles, yet the difference may be less important than cabin space, safety equipment, driving feel, and purchase price.

Some older listings call this vehicle the XC60 Recharge. Volvo’s newer U.S. model-year presentation uses “XC60 Plug-In Hybrid,” so shoppers may encounter both names when comparing current inventory with earlier vehicles.

Best fit: Families and premium-SUV buyers who want electric commuting capability without moving to a larger three-row SUV.

6. Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid: 34 miles

The Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid is listed at 34 miles of all-electric range. Its three-mile deficit versus the Escape is modest, but the Sportage has a meaningful configuration advantage for some shoppers: all-wheel drive is standard.

That makes the Sportage a practical choice for drivers who want compact-SUV utility and extra traction while still covering many short commutes electrically. It is less focused on maximum efficiency than the Prius and does not match the GLC’s electric range, but it offers a useful balance of space, mainstream positioning, and drivetrain capability.

Best fit: Mainstream SUV shoppers who want all-wheel drive and enough electric range for many local trips.

7. Alfa Romeo Tonale eAWD: 33 miles

The Alfa Romeo Tonale eAWD is rated at 33 miles of all-electric range. It occupies the same range tier as the Dodge Hornet PHEV and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid, but its appeal is more strongly tied to styling, brand character, and a sportier driving experience.

The Tonale is a compact crossover with all-wheel drive. Its 33-mile rating is below the Prius’s 44 miles and the GLC’s 54 miles, so it is not the range leader. Instead, it is for buyers who want a plug-in crossover that feels more distinctive than a purely utilitarian efficiency vehicle.

Best fit: Drivers who value design and performance character while still wanting the option to complete shorter trips on battery power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Dodge Hornet PHEV AWD: 33 miles

The Dodge Hornet PHEV AWD also delivers 33 miles of electric-only range. It ties the Tonale because the two vehicles use closely related underlying hardware, but they are presented to different audiences.

The Hornet combines plug-in capability with an aggressive compact-crossover design and all-wheel drive. It should be judged on more than its headline range: pricing, dealer availability, incentives, equipment, and total gasoline-plus-electric operating costs may matter more than a one-mile difference between similarly rated vehicles.

Best fit: Buyers who want a sportier-looking all-wheel-drive crossover and do not need the longest possible electric range.

Its smaller footprint can be an advantage in urban and suburban driving, parking, and everyday efficiency. The trade-off is less SUV-like space and capability than the Sportage, NX, XC60, or Pacifica. It is best considered as an efficiency-oriented compact vehicle rather than as a rugged or spacious SUV substitute.

Best fit: Urban and suburban drivers who want a compact, efficient PHEV and do not need all-wheel drive or maximum cargo volume.

10. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid: 32 miles

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid rounds out the list with 32 miles of electric-only range. That is less than the compact-car leaders, but the Pacifica is the only minivan in this comparison and offers a different kind of value: three-row family space and a seven-seat configuration.

For a family that regularly carries passengers, sports equipment, groceries, or luggage, 32 electric miles may be more useful than a higher number in a smaller vehicle. Many school runs, errands, and local commutes can fit within that range, while the gasoline engine preserves long-distance flexibility once the battery-only range is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Families who need minivan practicality and want to make many local trips electrically without giving up gasoline-powered road-trip capability.

How to interpret plug-in-hybrid range numbers

EPA range is a comparison estimate, not a promise

EPA-estimated electric range is designed to provide a standardized basis for comparing vehicles. It does not predict the exact distance every owner will achieve. Cold temperatures can reduce battery performance, while high speeds, steep terrain, heavy loads, aggressive acceleration, cabin heating, air conditioning, and frequent use of accessories can all reduce electric range.

Conversely, moderate temperatures, lower speeds, gentle acceleration, and favorable terrain may produce a result above the published estimate. The useful question is not whether a vehicle will always achieve its rating, but whether its expected real-world range gives you a comfortable margin for your normal trips.

“Up to” usually identifies a specific configuration

The Prius is the clearest example. Its SE trim reaches up to 44 miles, while the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium grades are listed at up to 39 miles. Larger wheels, different tires, added equipment, and drivetrain variations can change an EPA rating.

Before buying, check the window sticker or the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact vehicle identification number and configuration. Do not assume that the highest number for a nameplate applies to every vehicle sitting on a dealer’s lot.

Electric range is not total driving range

A plug-in hybrid can switch to gasoline operation after its usable battery charge is depleted. The numbers in this article describe the distance available in electric operation, not the vehicle’s combined range after adding gasoline. A PHEV’s major advantage is flexibility: it can use electricity for short trips and retain an internal-combustion engine for longer journeys.

Charging access determines how much the range matters

A PHEV is most efficient when it is charged regularly. If you can plug in at home overnight or at work during the day, a 32- to 54-mile electric rating may cover a large share of your routine driving. If charging is inconvenient, you may spend much of your time carrying a larger battery without using its full benefit.

Many plug-in hybrids use a J1772-style AC connection in the U.S., but connector type, charging rate, vehicle limits, circuit capacity, and installation requirements must be confirmed for the exact vehicle. If your vehicle supports it, a J1772 Level 2 charger can be a practical way to recharge faster at home. Verify the car’s connector and maximum AC charging rate, the charger’s amperage, and whether your household circuit can safely support the installation before purchasing. A faster charger cannot make the vehicle accept more power than its onboard charging system allows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A portable or spare cable can also be useful, but a J1772 charging cable should be treated as a vehicle-compatible accessory, not as a substitute for a suitable household circuit or a properly installed charging setup.

Which long-range plug-in hybrid is right for you?

  • Choose the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e if maximum electric range in a luxury SUV is the priority. Its 54-mile rating is the clear leader here.
  • Choose the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid if efficiency and electric range matter more than SUV shape. Select SE specifically if you want the 44-mile rating.
  • Choose the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid or Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid if you want a more mainstream, efficiency-oriented crossover. The Escape offers 37 miles but front-wheel drive; the Niro offers 33 miles in a smaller package.
  • Choose the Lexus NX 450h+ if you want a premium compact SUV with all-wheel drive and 37 miles of electric range.
  • Choose the Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid if you want a roomier premium SUV with a 35-mile electric rating.
  • Choose the Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid if standard all-wheel drive and mainstream SUV utility matter more than the last few miles of range.
  • Choose the Alfa Romeo Tonale or Dodge Hornet if distinctive styling and a sportier compact-crossover character are important. Both are rated at 33 miles.
  • Choose the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid if passenger and cargo capacity are more important than topping the range chart. Its 32 miles come with three-row, seven-seat minivan utility.

What to check before buying

  1. Measure your normal driving. Look at several ordinary days, not just your shortest commute. Add a margin for weather, detours, and errands.
  2. Confirm the exact trim. The Prius demonstrates that a higher trim can have a lower electric-range rating.
  3. Check drivetrain needs. The Escape is front-wheel drive, while the Sportage, NX, GLC, Tonale, and Hornet provide all-wheel-drive configurations identified in this comparison.
  4. Inspect charging compatibility. Confirm the vehicle’s connector, onboard AC charging limit, included cable, and the electrical requirements of any home charger.
  5. Compare the whole vehicle. Electric range does not reveal price, incentives, cargo capacity, passenger space, warranty terms, performance, ride quality, or availability.
  6. Use the EPA figure as a buffer calculation. If your daily route is close to the published rating, a vehicle with more range may be more comfortable in winter or at highway speeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which plug-in hybrid has the longest electric range?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e 4MATIC leads this U.S.-market comparison with an EPA-estimated 54 miles of all-electric range.

Does the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid really get 44 miles of electric range?

Up to 44 miles, but the rating applies to the SE trim. Toyota lists up to 39 miles for the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium grades.

Can a plug-in hybrid drive after its electric range is used up?

Yes. A PHEV can switch to gasoline operation after its battery-only range is depleted, so the electric-range figure is not the vehicle’s total driving range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will I get the EPA-estimated electric range in real driving?

Not necessarily. Temperature, speed, terrain, payload, climate-control use, battery condition, and driving style can materially change actual range.

The Bottom Line

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e is the electric-range champion at 54 miles, while the Prius Plug-in Hybrid offers the strongest mainstream efficiency case at up to 44 miles in SE trim. The best choice depends on more than the ranking: confirm the exact configuration, make sure you can charge regularly, and choose the body style, drivetrain, space, and price that match your daily use.
