Zin Boats returned to public view in January 2024 after pandemic shutdowns disrupted its plans for an electric performance runabout. By August 2026, the Seattle startup was presenting a wider lineup: the Z2R and Z7 runabouts, bespoke yacht tenders, and an electric propulsion platform for other boat builders. That is a more ambitious business than reviving one prototype—but the company’s published specifications and prices do not, by themselves, establish production volume, deliveries, or independently verified performance.
The Z2R was designed to prove a point
Zin Boats began with the Z2R, an approximately 20-foot electric runabout intended to show that an electric boat could deliver high performance rather than just quiet, low-speed cruising. In a 2024 profile, GeekWire reported that the original carbon-fiber boat reached about 35 mph. TechCrunch’s “Tesla of the sea” comparison captured the ambition, but it is a media metaphor—not evidence that Zin has automotive-scale production, reliability, or market reach.

The current Z2R is presented as a limited-production, customer-built boat with a 400-horsepower motor. Zin lists a $295,000 standard price on its dedicated Z2R page, while its store lists $290,000 and shows a $1,000 build deposit. Those are website-listed figures, not confirmed transaction prices; prospective buyers should ask for a current written quote and clarify what the configuration includes.
The public materials reviewed do not specify the current Z2R’s battery capacity, range under stated test conditions, delivery lead time, warranty, or whether the motor’s 400-hp figure is peak or continuous output. Those details matter more to a buying decision than horsepower alone.

How the pandemic interrupted the plan
Zin had been preparing to fulfill Z2R orders when COVID-19 hit. According to GeekWire’s January 27, 2024 account, the company was classified as non-essential and shut down; labor and supply-chain problems compounded the disruption. Founder and CEO Piotr Zin reportedly came close to abandoning the effort. The company later described the hiatus as a period for learning and development, but the practical result was a delay in moving from the initial boat toward a business.
The phrase “resurfaces after the pandemic” belongs to that 2024 relaunch, not a new 2026 comeback announcement. GeekWire reported that Zin had raised $250,000 from friends and family before securing a $1.275 million seed round for the relaunch. That establishes reported financing, not deliveries, revenue, or manufacturing scale. Public information cited here does not establish how many boats Zin has delivered, its production rate, or whether it has raised additional capital since that round.
The team has relevant experience; scale remains a separate question
Piotr Zin’s background spans technology, automotive, and marine design, including work associated with Microsoft, General Motors, BMW, and Brunswick Boat Group, according to GeekWire. The same report identified David Donovick as president and COO, Ross Carmichael as vice president of engineering, and Pat Walker as vice president of manufacturing; it described Carmichael as having about 30 years of boat design and building experience and Walker as having four decades in boating and aerospace.

That experience helps explain why Zin is pursuing performance-oriented boats and integrated propulsion rather than a simple electric-motor swap. It does not prove the company can manufacture boats repeatedly, meet delivery schedules, or provide a broad service network. Those are distinct tests for a hardware startup.

Specifications and commercial terms in this table come from Zin’s current Z2R, Z7, custom tender, and propulsion platform pages, plus the company store. Treat them as company-published information, not independently tested results.
Z7: the more general-purpose runabout
Zin’s Z7 page describes a 22-foot boat with a 400-hp (300-kW) motor and a 95-kWh battery. The company claims more than 80 miles of range and speeds up to 40 mph, with seating for 10. Listed features include CCS, 110-volt AC, 220-volt AC, and solar charging, along with a bow thruster, refrigerator, sink, solar roof, USB charging, and deployable swim platform. The page’s $245,000 figure is explicitly identified as 2025 pricing and says delivery within the continental United States is included; the store still displays the same price. A buyer in 2026 should not assume that is a current all-in offer without written confirmation.
The Z7 reservation page describes its $1,000 deposit as fully refundable. That differs from the Z2R store’s “build deposit” wording, which does not provide the same refund statement in the available text. Do not treat the two deposits as having identical terms: get refundability, cancellation rules, configuration, and delivery commitments in writing before paying.
Z11 and bespoke tenders
For yacht and custom applications, Zin promotes an 11-meter tender platform. The company claims speeds above 60 mph, more than 2,000 peak horsepower, and more than 100 nautical miles of range under normal operating conditions. Its materials also cite certification involving Lloyd’s Register and the Cayman Islands Ship Registry, joystick steering, Raymarine-developed navigation and control software, and more than 90% of tender components produced within 200 miles of its Pacific Northwest headquarters.

These are significant claims, but the public page does not establish the exact vessel, certificate scope, operating conditions, or independent test basis for each. A buyer or yacht builder should ask which specific model and configuration the certification covers, who issued each certificate, and what performance was demonstrated with what load, speed, and reserve.
A propulsion business beyond Zin-branded boats
Zin’s larger strategic bet may be its Zin Marine Platform (ZMP), which it presents as modular propulsion for vessels ranging from small boats to passenger ferries. Its site describes 180-to-450-kW motors and inverters, multiple-motor configurations up to 2,000 hp, LFP, NMC, or NCA battery options, and battery certification language including IP67X. It says the system can accommodate charging inputs from 120-volt AC through 480-volt three-phase, as well as DC fast charging. A central “Magic Box” is described as handling vehicle control, power distribution and management, and cooling; the company also cites integrations involving Raymarine and Dometic.
If boat builders, retrofitters, or fleet operators adopt the platform, it could give Zin a business-to-business path beyond selling its own high-priced boats. That is a plausible opportunity suggested by the product positioning, not evidence of customer adoption or recurring revenue. “Plug-and-play” should also not be read as a substitute for vessel-specific naval architecture, electrical design, regulatory approvals, commissioning, and service planning.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy electric-boat range is hard to compare
A boat’s range is particularly sensitive to how it is used. Unlike a car that can often coast or stop, a vessel must keep overcoming water resistance; hull shape, displacement, payload, waves, wind, water conditions, and speed all affect energy use. Higher speeds can sharply reduce practical range. Batteries also add weight, which can affect the very range and performance they enable.
Rank #4
- Fast and Far Range: The max speed of this high speed boat reaches to 30 kmh. There are three speed modes for your preference. The control range is up to 120m(394ft). The battery included will work for 18 to 20 in a single charge.
- Worry-Free Play with One Key Self-righting and Waterproof Hull: If it flips, water won’t go inside and damage the boat; and you can flip the boat back over with the one key self righting button. Don’t need to get yourself wet and swim to get it back.
- Low Battery/Over Distance/Signal Interference Alert: The control will make beeping warning when the battery is low, or the boat is over distance, or there is signal interference. So you can get it back before it dies.
- Gorgeous Led Lights: Different from others selling in the markets, two long light strips are inlaid on the sides of the hull. There are seven lights modes, where lights have different color and different status. They are a big advantage, especially when you navigate in the dark. In daytime, the light can be turned off to save energy.
- 2.4Ghz Maneuverable Controller for Beginners 8+: It displays direction control (move forward/backward or turn left/right), direction trimming, speed settings, light control, demo mode and self-righting(flip over back). It even alarms you when you need to bring it back. You will get started with it immediately! 2.4Ghz technology allows several users to use several boats at the same time. Enjoy your time with your friends and families!
Charging is another constraint. A boat may support several charging standards on paper, but what an owner can use depends on the shore-power service at the home marina, connector and charger compatibility, installation, and access to suitable fast charging. Saltwater exposure adds demands around sealing, corrosion protection, cooling, and electrical safety. For yacht tenders and commercial craft, certification and integration are central, not optional details.
Zin’s Z7 claim of 80-plus miles is therefore not comparable to a verified range figure unless the company supplies a test method: speed, load, water and weather conditions, battery reserve, and whether “miles” means statute or nautical miles. A buyer should ask for the range at the speed and payload they actually expect to use, with a safe return reserve.
Where Zin fits in the market
Zin is not just competing in one category. The Z2R and Z7 target performance and recreational runabout buyers; the Z11 is aimed at bespoke yacht-tender work; and ZMP is pitched to builders and commercial operators. Pure Watercraft, X Shore, Oceanvolt, Torqeedo, and ePropulsion represent adjacent or overlapping electric-boat and propulsion options, but they are not all direct substitutes: some focus on complete boats, others on outboards or repower systems. No current like-for-like evidence here supports claims that Zin is cheaper, faster, more reliable, or more advanced than any named rival.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a buyer, the meaningful comparison is by use case. A complete luxury runabout is not interchangeable with an outboard for an existing hull; a bespoke yacht tender has different certification and service needs from a recreational pontoon; and a fleet operator will care about uptime, charging logistics, redundancy, and total cost of ownership. Any comparison should use comparable configurations, tested range conditions, warranty terms, and actual delivery availability.
What a buyer should establish before placing a deposit
- Fit the boat to the route. Map typical trip distance, speed, passenger and cargo load, conditions, and a return reserve. Ask for performance data under a comparable duty cycle.
- Check the dock’s electrical supply. Confirm available voltage, phase, current, charger requirements, and installation cost with the marina and a qualified electrician. A claim of DC-fast-charge support is useful only if a compatible charger is accessible.
- Get the exact commercial terms. Request a dated, itemized quotation covering configuration, delivery, taxes, commissioning, options, and any charging equipment. Resolve the Z2R’s $290,000/$295,000 discrepancy and the Z7 page’s 2025 price label.
- Read the deposit terms. Confirm in writing whether the payment is refundable, when it can be refunded, what triggers conversion into an order, and what happens if the delivery date changes.
- Ask about ownership support. Establish service locations, emergency support, winterization, corrosion protection, software support, battery warranty, battery replacement cost, and parts availability.
- For a custom or commercial build, define responsibility. Clarify who handles hull integration, certification, system commissioning, charging infrastructure, and ongoing maintenance. Ask for the certificate and scope applicable to the precise vessel, not a general claim.
The remaining test is execution
Zin appears to have moved beyond the story of a single electric-boat demonstrator: its current materials show several consumer and custom products, as well as a propulsion platform aimed at other builders. But the evidence available in those pages and the 2024 relaunch coverage does not establish how many boats have reached customers, repeatable production capacity, independently verified range and speed, or the depth of after-sales support.
That is the distinction to keep in mind. A compelling prototype and an ambitious product portfolio show what Zin wants to build; repeat deliveries, clear specifications, credible certification, and durable customer support will show whether it has built a sustainable boat business.
