The plan was to use T-Mobile-powered 4G connectivity to bring Vinli’s aftermarket connected-car platform into dealerships and service programs—not simply to sell more plug-in devices. The announcement described an expansion strategy; it does not establish that the projected deployments happened or that the same products remain available today.
What Vinli announced
The announcement had three parts: a broader strategic relationship with T-Mobile, which supplied the wireless connection for Vinli’s service; a Cox Automotive program aimed at dealerships; and a Meineke arrangement intended to connect Vinli features with customer rewards and vehicle maintenance. The headline’s reference to national automotive services principally meant Cox and Meineke. Contemporary coverage described an October 2016 expected start for the Meineke rollout, not a confirmed nationwide launch date.

Vinli was not a T-Mobile-owned service or a joint venture, based on the reporting. T-Mobile provided connectivity, while Vinli supplied its device and software platform. The announced relationship was described as expanding beyond a conventional provider-customer arrangement, but that does not mean T-Mobile supplied every app or controlled the platform.

How the Vinli system worked
Vinli paired an aftermarket device plugged into a vehicle’s OBD-II data port with cloud software, cellular connectivity, and a catalog of connected-car applications. The device could provide functions such as diagnostics, vehicle location, driving-history and vehicle information, and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot. Contemporary reports described compatibility with cars made from 1996 onward; that was a 2016 product claim, not a guarantee for every make, model, trim, or present-day vehicle.

Reports put the app catalog at roughly 47 to nearly 50 applications, with some describing more than 40 integrations and the company saying hundreds more were in development. The counts varied by publication and counting method, so they are best understood as approximate contemporary figures, not a precise or current catalog. Reported examples included maintenance reminders, warning-light information, location, fuel or performance data, and Amazon Alexa integration.
Those driver-facing features were only one side of the pitch. Dealers and service businesses had different potential uses—such as managing inventory on a lot or bringing a customer back for service—and those should not be confused with consumer apps.
What Cox Automotive was expected to contribute
Cox Automotive was positioned as a distribution channel and a route into dealership operations. Its Connected Dealership Program was described as supporting several uses:

Contemporary coverage cited a Cox network of about 40,000 dealerships or dealer clients. That figure describes potential reach, not 40,000 dealers that had installed Vinli, sold devices, or activated the program. Cox’s broader portfolio included businesses such as Manheim, Autotrader, and Kelley Blue Book, but the announcement did not establish that every Cox brand adopted Vinli.
What Meineke was expected to contribute
Meineke planned to connect Vinli with its Meineke Rewards program and service locations. The proposed customer-facing uses included maintenance reminders, diagnostic information, and alerts relating to warning indicators, with the aim of linking vehicle information to a service relationship. Contemporary reports cited roughly 1,000 Meineke centers and described the arrangement as exclusive; those were descriptions of the 2016 deal, not evidence of permanent or current exclusivity.
There was a subsequent sign that the relationship advanced beyond the initial announcement: a November 2016 product release described Meineke Revvy as built on the Vinli platform and powered by T-Mobile LTE. That release supports the existence of a branded product at the time, but does not show that Revvy or its connected service remains available in 2026.

Why distribution mattered more than another feature
An OBD-II dongle can be useful, but it asks drivers to discover a product, buy it, install or pair it, and decide to keep using it. Vinli’s partnerships were an attempt to put connectivity into places where customers already bought and maintained vehicles. A dealer could potentially present the device with a used-car sale; a service center could tie alerts to maintenance; and dealership operators could use related data for inventory and lot workflows.
In business terms, Vinli was trying to move from a retail gadget toward a service attached to vehicle sales, dealership operations, and maintenance programs. That could offer more scale than relying solely on individual online or retail purchases. The trade-off is that partner-led distribution can reduce a platform maker’s control over pricing, installation, branding, customer support, rollout pace, and the customer’s understanding of who handles vehicle data.
The numbers were targets and reach claims, not proof of adoption
Contemporary articles also reported a device price of about $200 and an executive projection of more than one million units in 2017, alongside an expectation of reaching profitability that year. Those were period-specific price and forecasts, not current pricing or verified results. Similarly, talk of access to millions of vehicles referred to possible scale through partners, not measured adoption. The reporting available for this announcement does not establish whether the October Meineke rollout reached its intended footprint, how many Cox dealers used the program, whether the unit forecast was met, or whether Vinli became profitable in 2017.

Vinli’s broader ambition, as described by its founder and CEO Mark Haidar, was to make a connected-car platform available across vehicles on the road, including older cars without factory connectivity. The company was also exploring direct automaker and supplier integrations, including Carport, developed with Continental. Those were strategic aims, not proof that Vinli achieved broad market adoption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical and data questions behind the pitch
The OBD-II approach avoided requiring a factory-connected vehicle, but it still depended on hardware and compatible vehicle data. A device might need installation or account pairing; a port could be inaccessible or already occupied; older vehicles might expose less information; and unplugging, tampering, cellular dead zones, or imperfect diagnostic alerts could limit usefulness. The available reports describe diagnostics and alerts, not remote repairs or mechanic-grade diagnosis of every warning light. Continuous power use and possible battery drain are also practical considerations for any device left connected.
There were important questions about data, too. Vinli’s described functions involved location, driving history, vehicle health, fuel, or performance information. For dealer and service use cases, readers would reasonably want to know who could access that data, whether it could be used for marketing, how consent worked, and how access transferred when a used vehicle changed owners. The reporting on the 2016 partnerships does not establish the detailed privacy terms or account-transfer process, so those details should not be assumed.

Historical status
This was a September 2016 expansion announcement, not a current product launch. The contemporary sources document the proposed Cox and Meineke channels, T-Mobile-powered connectivity, and the later Revvy product announcement, but they do not verify that the original Vinli device, Revvy, the partnerships, or associated subscriptions remain active or supported in 2026. Historical device prices and compatibility claims should not be treated as a present-day buying guide.
