At CES 2024, BMW showed a voice assistant using Amazon’s Alexa large language model to answer vehicle questions and, in a demonstrated EV scenario, recommend and activate a more efficient drive mode. The project later progressed through a limited beta and into a production-oriented BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant using selected Alexa+ capabilities. BMW named the iX3 as the first production model, but the company has not established that the exact 2024 drive-mode demonstration is available in every eligible car.
What BMW demonstrated at CES 2024
BMW’s CES demonstration paired its branded voice assistant with Amazon’s Alexa LLM technology. The idea was to let a driver ask questions about the car in ordinary language, receive answers as a vehicle expert, and connect some requests to BMW functions. BMW described the feature as a development demonstration and said it was continuing to test the technology with Amazon. BMW’s CES video called it an “LLM-based car expert”; GeekWire reported on the drive-mode example.

The example went beyond a fixed command such as “set the temperature.” In the reported EV scenario, the driver could ask what to do to conserve energy with a charger still some distance away. The assistant could recommend a more efficient mode and demonstrate changing the drive mode by voice. That showed the intended bridge between conversation, vehicle context and an action—not proof that an LLM had unrestricted control of the car.
“Car expert” meant a BMW-oriented assistant able to explain vehicle features and answer operating questions, with the potential to use trip or vehicle context. Amazon’s description of its BMW partnership framed the assistant as combining BMW’s vehicle and services expertise with Alexa technology. The public CES materials do not specify the complete technical architecture, permission checks, confirmation prompts or safety restrictions behind each demonstrated action.

How the idea differs from a conventional voice command
A traditional command expects a known phrase and performs a narrow task: “set the cabin temperature to 21 degrees.” An LLM-style assistant is designed to interpret a less structured request, ask or answer follow-up questions, and connect the conversation to relevant services. A request about reaching a charger with limited range, for example, might involve understanding the question, drawing on vehicle or navigation information, making a suggestion and then carrying out an allowed command.
That is a useful way to understand the concept, not a confirmed diagram of BMW’s software. A production system still needs a vehicle layer that determines what information is available and which commands are permitted. The reviewed public material does not disclose the full division of work between Amazon’s models and BMW’s software, or the exact rules for authorizing actions.

Amazon’s 2025 announcement described beta capabilities for more conversational navigation and trip planning. BMW’s January 2026 announcement moved the story to a named production vehicle and a broader assistant experience.

What BMW announced for the production assistant
BMW said the expanded assistant would debut in the new BMW iX3, initially in Germany and the United States, with English and German announced at launch. Drivers can activate it with “Hey BMW” or “BMW.” BMW described natural dialogue, contextual follow-ups, general questions, route planning with multiple stops and control of vehicle functions. The system is associated with BMW Operating System X and Panoramic iDrive.
BMW said existing iX3 vehicles began receiving the feature through software updates at the end of May 2026. It also announced a gradual expansion to additional vehicles equipped with Operating System 9 and Operating System X in the second half of 2026. Those statements do not mean that every car with either operating system receives the same functions at once. Model, production date, market, language, software status and connected-service eligibility can all matter; owners should check their specific vehicle with BMW.
The announcement makes the production assistant more than a CES concept, but it does not confirm every detail of the 2024 demonstration as a production feature. In particular, BMW’s public 2026 material describes vehicle-function control generally; it does not independently establish that the precise efficiency recommendation and drive-mode activation shown in 2024 are enabled across the rollout.

It is not the same as older Alexa in BMWs
BMW’s earlier Alexa Car Integration brought Alexa services into compatible vehicles. BMW’s U.S. support documentation lists requirements including an Amazon account, a ConnectedDrive account, the My BMW app and a compatible navigation-equipped vehicle. Three related terms should not be conflated: older Alexa Car Integration is a vehicle feature; Alexa Custom Assistant is a platform automakers can use to build branded assistants; Alexa+ is the newer Amazon architecture whose selected capabilities BMW says it is integrating.
Nor is this BMW’s version of ChatGPT. The announced technology is from Amazon’s Alexa LLM and Alexa+ ecosystem, not OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Amazon describes Alexa+ as an architecture combining models and agent capabilities, but that broad description does not mean every Alexa+ function is active in BMW vehicles.

Safety, reliability and connectivity remain important questions
Voice interaction may reduce the need to search menus, but that is a product rationale, not proof that the system is safer than touch controls. An LLM can misunderstand an ambiguous request, give an incorrect answer, sound confident when uncertain or fail to complete an action after discussing it fluently. Accents, background conversation, weak connectivity and changing vehicle conditions can complicate the interaction. An incorrect answer about range or a misunderstood efficiency request has greater practical significance than a mistaken response to a general-interest question.
Before treating a voice assistant as a reliable control interface, drivers need clear answers to practical questions: Does it confirm a consequential action? Are some commands blocked while the car is moving? Does the display show what it understood? Can it distinguish an explanation from an instruction to act? What happens if the assistant is unavailable? BMW’s public announcements reviewed here do not provide a complete command matrix, independent reliability data or a full safety and confirmation policy. Physical controls and the vehicle’s normal procedures remain important.
The same caution applies to privacy and connectivity. The sources reviewed do not specify the exact offline behavior, voice-data retention rules or what information is sent to which provider for the production BMW implementation. Because the new experience relies on Amazon AI technology and connected assistant services, network availability and account or service configuration may affect it; BMW’s public announcement does not define a complete offline fallback. Do not assume either that all functions work offline or that they stop working entirely without a connection.
Why BMW is working with Amazon
BMW can retain a branded, vehicle-specific assistant while drawing on Amazon’s conversational AI infrastructure rather than building every general-purpose assistant capability from scratch. Amazon’s partnership announcement described Alexa Custom Assistant as a way for automakers to combine their own expertise and identity with Alexa technology. For drivers, the potential benefit is more natural interaction with complex car features. The trade-off is reliance on connected services, accounts and technology from multiple companies—and the need to know what the assistant can reliably do.
What BMW owners and shoppers should check
- Model: The iX3 is the first production vehicle BMW named for the expanded assistant.
- Software: Check the vehicle’s operating-system version and whether its software update has arrived. An OS 9 or OS X label alone does not guarantee that every feature is available.
- Market and language: Germany and the United States, with English and German, were named for the initial 2026 launch; later availability can differ.
- Exact function: Ask BMW or check the vehicle’s current documentation whether a specific function—especially drive-mode control—is supported for that model and software version.
- Which Alexa feature: Confirm whether the car has the newer BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant integration or the older Alexa Car Integration. They are not interchangeable.
For owners whose vehicle does not receive the newer assistant, BMW’s native assistant remains an option for supported functions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can provide phone-based navigation and voice interaction, but they are not substitutes for deeper integration with BMW vehicle controls.
