A camouflaged Xiaomi SUV photographed testing at Germany’s Nürburgring in September 2025 was initially an identification puzzle: was it a high-performance YU7 GT, or a rumored YU7 Ultra? Later reporting largely answered that question. The vehicle became associated with the Xiaomi YU7 GT, reported with roughly 990 hp, a 300 km/h top speed and Nürburgring SUV-record claims. The original photographs were important evidence of a real performance-YU7 program, but they did not prove the final motor layout, output, price or launch plan.
What Xiaomi’s Nürburgring prototype looked like
Photographs showed a camouflaged Xiaomi SUV running on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The red-and-gray disguise reportedly resembled camouflage used on the SU7 Ultra, which immediately suggested that Xiaomi was testing something more serious than an ordinary development mule.

Compared with the regular YU7, the prototype appeared to have:

The widened body, stance and aero features were visible or inferred from images. They did not establish the number of motors, battery capacity, horsepower, final production design or even the vehicle’s eventual name.

Contemporary reports described the vehicle as a possible YU7 GT or YU7 Ultra. The initial sighting and the uncertainty surrounding it were reported by Gizchina, Lowyat and ArenaEV.
Why the Nürburgring test mattered
The Nordschleife is a demanding engineering venue, not merely a publicity backdrop. Manufacturers use it to assess high-speed stability, braking, suspension calibration, tire behavior, cornering balance, thermal management and durability under sustained load.
A Nürburgring appearance can therefore indicate validation work, marketing preparation or both. It does not automatically mean the vehicle is intended to set a record. A test prototype may also use hardware, tires or software that will not appear on every customer car.

Xiaomi’s previous use of the circuit made the sighting especially significant. For the SU7 Ultra, Xiaomi reported a 7:04.957 lap for a mass-produced electric executive sedan and a separate 6:22.091 prototype time. Those are different vehicle categories and must not be combined. Xiaomi’s own accounts are available at this SU7 Ultra article and this related Xiaomi page.
Was it a YU7 GT or a YU7 Ultra?
In September 2025, no official source had confirmed either name. “YU7 Ultra” was a plausible rumor because Xiaomi already used Ultra branding for its most extreme SU7 sedan. The photographs, however, primarily indicated a sportier YU7 derivative.
Later reporting identified Xiaomi’s high-performance YU7 as the YU7 GT. That makes the GT explanation substantially stronger in hindsight, while preserving the fact that the original spy-shot report was speculative rather than an early official announcement.

The regular YU7 provides the baseline
Xiaomi launched the standard YU7 in mainland China on June 26, 2025. Xiaomi’s published specifications and launch material describe three versions:
Recommended Free Tools
| Version | Drive and output reference | CLTC range | Published acceleration/top speed | Launch price in mainland China |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YU7 Standard | Rear-wheel drive | 835 km | Not stated in the cited launch summary | RMB 253,500 starting price for the range |
| YU7 Pro | All-wheel drive | 770 km | Not stated in the cited launch summary | RMB 279,900 |
| YU7 Max | All-wheel drive, up to 690 PS | 760 km | 0–100 km/h in 3.23 seconds (2.98 seconds excluding one-foot rollout); 253 km/h | RMB 329,900 |
Xiaomi lists 96.3-kWh and 101.7-kWh battery capacities for YU7 products and says availability initially applied only to mainland China. See the official YU7 specifications and launch event page.
What the early YU7 GT rumors claimed
Reports in 2025 suggested a tri-motor layout, technology related to the SU7 Ultra, output above 1,000 hp, larger brakes, wider tires, stiffer suspension and more aggressive aerodynamic parts. One report even circulated a 1,548-hp possibility. These were unconfirmed estimates, not specifications established by Xiaomi.

The rumor package also implied a substantial everyday trade-off. More power can increase battery and tire consumption; track-focused tires may be less practical in rain and reduce range; stiffer suspension and larger aero devices can compromise ride comfort; and high-output operation demands additional cooling and thermal safeguards. Those are engineering implications, not confirmed YU7 GT equipment.

By May 2026, Xiaomi-linked and automotive reporting described the YU7 GT with approximately 990 hp, a 300 km/h top speed, a reported 705 km CLTC range and a reported 2.92-second 0–100 km/h time. The car was also associated with a Crimson Red exterior and Track Red interior themes.
These figures come from later reports, including CarNewsChina, Electrek and News18A. The available official Xiaomi pages cited above confirm the regular YU7 and SU7 Ultra, but do not provide a comparable YU7 GT specification sheet. The GT should therefore not be assumed to share the standard YU7’s battery, motors, suspension, brakes or price.

The reported Nürburgring times
- September 2025: the camouflaged prototype was photographed testing, but no verified lap time was released.
- 7:34.931: later coverage presented this as a YU7 GT SUV record claim.
- 7:22.755: a faster reported lap was associated with the optional Track Pro Package.
The category matters. “Fastest SUV” can mean all SUVs, production SUVs, electric SUVs or a particular Nürburgring classification. Record comparisons also depend on whether the car was a customer-production vehicle or pre-production prototype, which tires and driver were used, track conditions, timing methodology and whether the full Nordschleife or another published configuration was covered.
The 7:22.755 result is specifically linked in the available reporting to the Track Pro Package, so it should not be treated as the time of every YU7 GT. The evidence also distinguishes between Xiaomi’s certification or announcement and independent Nürburgring leaderboard treatment; the reports should be read as attributed claims rather than an unconditional universal record.
A separate autonomous-driving claim
News18A also described a YU7 GT prototype marked for an autonomous-driving Nürburgring test. That is a separate story from the driver-controlled performance runs. Xiaomi had not officially commented on the autonomous-lap claim in the available coverage, so it remains unconfirmed and should not be presented as a production-car feature or a confirmed autonomous record.
What the spy shot did—and did not—prove
- Strong evidence: Xiaomi was testing a visibly wider, lower and more aggressive SUV at the Nordschleife.
- Supported by later reporting: the performance derivative became known as the YU7 GT and was associated with extreme output and lap-time claims.
- Not established by the photographs: tri-motor hardware, 1,548 hp, exact battery, final price, delivery date, production bodywork or export plans.
- Still requiring caution: independent verification of the reported records, real-world range and the specification of ordinary customer cars.
Does Nürburgring testing imply European or U.S. availability?
No. Xiaomi’s launch material said the YU7 was initially available only in mainland China. Testing in Germany demonstrates engineering activity, not a sales authorization. European research, overseas testing and eventual customer availability are separate claims. No U.S. price or U.S. launch should be inferred without a specific official announcement.
Bottom line
The September 2025 photographs were not proof that Xiaomi had already finalized a YU7 GT, nor did they validate the early 1,000-plus-hp or tri-motor rumors. They were, however, an early sign of a genuine high-performance YU7 program. Subsequent reporting resolved the naming question in favor of the YU7 GT and attached roughly 990 hp, 300 km/h, 705 km CLTC and Nürburgring times of 7:34.931 and 7:22.755 to different reported configurations. The sensible reading is a real performance SUV with impressive claims—while keeping prototype status, optional equipment, record categories and independent verification clearly separated.
