CarPlay apps are installed on your iPhone, not downloaded to the car. Install a CarPlay-compatible app from the App Store, connect the iPhone to your vehicle, then manage its position at Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Customize. Only apps with a CarPlay interface can appear on the vehicle screen.
What “installing an app on CarPlay” really means
CarPlay is an iPhone-to-vehicle interface rather than a separate app store. The app remains on the iPhone; the car displays the portion that the developer has built and Apple has approved for CarPlay. Apple describes compatible third-party apps and their categories at Apple Support and Apple Developer.

- Install: Download the app to the iPhone from the App Store.
- Make available: Connect the iPhone and, if necessary, enable the app in CarPlay’s Customize screen.
- Launch: Tap its icon on the vehicle display or use Siri and the vehicle controls.
- Understand the limits: The CarPlay interface can have fewer features than the full phone app. Waze, for example, says its CarPlay version is limited and that some mobile features are unavailable: Waze Help.
Check these requirements first
- An iPhone model supported by Apple’s current CarPlay list. Apple lists models reaching back to iPhone 5s, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every vehicle, app, iOS release, or region: Apple CarPlay.
- A CarPlay-capable vehicle or aftermarket receiver. If you are unsure, the vehicle manufacturer—not the App Store—is the authority. Apple’s setup guidance is at Apple Support.
- CarPlay availability in your country or region.
- Siri enabled. Go to Settings > Siri (the exact label can vary by iOS release) and complete Siri setup.
- A current version of the app and reasonably current iOS.
- For wired CarPlay, a cable and USB port that carry data, not merely charge the phone. For wireless CarPlay, a compatible vehicle or receiver.
- Internet access when the app needs live traffic, streaming, searches, map data, or account authentication.
Some older vehicles can gain CarPlay through an aftermarket receiver. Apple lists brands including Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony on its CarPlay page. A normal iPhone app cannot create CarPlay on a stereo that has no CarPlay-capable hardware.

Install the app on your iPhone
- Park safely and unlock the iPhone.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for the app and verify that it is the official listing from the correct developer.
- Tap Get or the price button, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple Account password.
- Wait for installation to finish.
- While parked, open the app once. Sign in, grant permissions, download maps or media, and complete any required setup. This is a useful preparation and troubleshooting step, not a universal Apple requirement.
Do not assume that every App Store app works in CarPlay. Apple supports selected categories such as navigation, audio, messaging, voice calling, EV charging, parking, food ordering, fueling, driving tasks, and automaker apps.

Add, remove, or reorder the app in CarPlay
- Disconnect from CarPlay, or make the changes while the vehicle is parked.
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap General, then CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Customize.
- Find the app under More Apps and tap its Add button.
- Drag the app up or down to change its Home screen position. Use the remove control to take it off the CarPlay Home screen.
- Reconnect the iPhone. Apple says the revised arrangement appears the next time the phone connects: Apple’s icon instructions.
If the app is absent from More Apps, it is probably not CarPlay-compatible, restricted for your iPhone or region, out of date, or not being recognized correctly by iOS.
Connect the iPhone to CarPlay
Wired CarPlay
- Start the vehicle.
- Make sure Siri is enabled.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s designated CarPlay USB port.
- Select the CarPlay source or icon on the vehicle display if it does not open automatically.
- Unlock the iPhone and approve prompts when asked.
Wireless CarPlay
- Start the vehicle and put its infotainment system into wireless CarPlay or Bluetooth-pairing mode, following the owner’s manual.
- On the iPhone, use Settings > Wi-Fi and Settings > Bluetooth as the vehicle instructs.
- Select the vehicle when it appears and approve CarPlay.
Pairing screens and menu names differ by vehicle. Some cars require selecting CarPlay manually, and some expose it through a touchscreen, rotary controller, or touchpad. Apple’s general setup guidance is at Apple Support. Wireless CarPlay is not universal; a wireless adapter generally works only when the vehicle already has wired CarPlay.

Choose an app that explicitly supports CarPlay, is actively maintained, offers useful controls from the vehicle display, and provides offline downloads when you regularly drive without reliable cellular service. Check subscription and in-app-purchase terms in the current App Store listing.

If an installed app does not appear

| Region, device, or account restriction | Confirm that the service and CarPlay feature are offered in your country, that you are signed in, and that any work, school, parental-control, or regional restriction permits installation. |
| Connection has not refreshed | Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay; if needed, restart the iPhone and vehicle. |
| Vehicle software issue | Check the manufacturer’s support site or dealer instructions for infotainment firmware updates. |

If the app appears but does not work
- Confirm that the iPhone has internet access if the app needs live information.
- While parked, open the app on the iPhone and finish sign-in or permissions.
- Update and restart the app.
- Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Turn the vehicle fully off, wait, and restart it.
- For wired CarPlay, try a certified data cable and the vehicle’s other designated USB port, if available. A charging-only port or damaged cable can fail even while charging the phone.
- Remove and reinstall the app only after confirming that account data is synchronized.
- Check the developer’s CarPlay-specific help. Spotify’s official sequence includes updating software, checking internet access, restarting the app and car, reinstalling, testing the cable, and contacting the vehicle or stereo manufacturer: Spotify Support.
If every CarPlay app fails, investigate the vehicle connection, USB port, wireless pairing, or infotainment system rather than treating it as an individual-app problem.

Wired versus wireless: which should you use?
- Wired: Requires a suitable cable and data-capable USB port. It is straightforward when the vehicle supports it, but the cable can loosen, fail, or restrict phone placement.
- Wireless: Avoids the cable, but requires compatible hardware and adds pairing variables. Follow the vehicle manual rather than assuming one universal procedure.
- Adapter: A wireless adapter is an option only for a vehicle that already provides wired CarPlay; it cannot turn any non-CarPlay stereo into a CarPlay system.
Use CarPlay safely
Install, sign in, rearrange icons, and troubleshoot while parked. CarPlay is designed to reduce phone interaction, not to make every phone feature safe or available while driving. Use Siri and the vehicle’s controls where possible, never type on the iPhone in motion, and do not assume that the full phone interface—or video and other distracting features—is available through CarPlay. Why does an app work on my iPhone but not in the car?
The developer may not have implemented CarPlay support, or the CarPlay interface may exclude features available in the phone version.

Can I use Google Maps or Waze with CarPlay?
Yes, when the current app, iPhone, region, and vehicle support them. Add the app through the iPhone’s CarPlay Customize screen.

Does CarPlay require cellular data?
Only services that need live traffic, streaming, searches, authentication, or other online data require a connection. Downloaded media or maps may work offline when the app supports it.
Can I add CarPlay to an older car?
A compatible aftermarket receiver may add CarPlay. A wireless adapter normally requires existing wired CarPlay and cannot replace a CarPlay-capable head unit.
