Volkswagen and Audi employees objected after Audi chief executive Gernot Döllner appeared with Donald Trump at a Republican campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, on October 25, 2026. Trump used the event to present a proposed roughly $4 billion Audi plant, but workers said the stage appearance looked like campaign assistance, conflicted with Audi’s political-neutrality rules and came while German factories and jobs face restructuring.
Audi says it accepted the invitation for business reasons: the United States is its second-largest premium market, imported-vehicle tariffs are costly and its U.S. operation is not currently profitable. The factory is still a proposal. Volkswagen’s supervisory board, including employee representatives, must approve it, and no binding decision on German-site protections had been reported by October 27.

What happened at the Audi-Trump rally in Georgia?
At a Republican campaign rally near Macon, Trump brought Döllner onto the stage to announce plans for Audi’s first U.S. production plant. Reuters reported an investment of about $4 billion, annual capacity of approximately 200,000 SUVs and about 4,500 jobs if the project proceeds. The proposal still required approval from Volkswagen’s supervisory board when the announcement was made.
The setting, rather than only the factory plan, triggered the backlash. Döllner appeared after several minutes of campaign remarks that Volkswagen group works-council chair Daniela Cavallo characterized as racist, sexist, xenophobic, transphobic and contemptuous of democracy. Her criticism was unusually direct: “Etliche Minuten voller Rassismus, Sexismus, Fremdenhass, Transphobie, Verächtlichmachung der Demokratie – und dann tritt einer unserer obersten Konzern-Repräsentanten auf die Bühne und betreibt aktive Wahlkampfhilfe.” In English, she said that one of the group’s top representatives had walked onstage and engaged in active campaign assistance.

Why are Volkswagen and Audi workers angry?
Employees see three separate problems in the appearance.
They fear the company looked politically aligned
IG Metall leader Christiane Benner called the appearance politically unacceptable and alleged that it breached Audi’s neutrality obligations. For works councils, appearing at a partisan rally can signal support even when management says the purpose was commercial. That perception matters particularly for a company with employees and customers across the political spectrum.
The timing collides with German job cuts
The announcement arrived during Volkswagen’s restructuring. Reuters reported about 50,000 additional job cuts by 2030 within roughly 120,000 planned reductions worldwide. Audi’s Neckarsulm plant in Germany was described as especially exposed, so workers are wary of approving new U.S. capacity before German locations receive credible guarantees.
They want leverage through Volkswagen’s governance system
Because employee representatives sit on Volkswagen’s supervisory board, the pending vote gives labor representatives a route to demand commitments. Their concern is not simply whether an American plant creates jobs; it is whether expansion abroad weakens the industrial base that already exists in Germany.

Did Audi violate its political-neutrality rules?
The workers’ allegation is plausible under the policy language quoted in German reporting, but the available information does not establish a final legal or internal finding of violation.
Audi’s policy says: “Um diesen Grundsatz zu respektieren, werden in den drei letzten Monaten vor Wahlen keine öffentlich wirksamen Termine mit zur Wahl stehenden Parteien/Politiker und keine Sponsorings von entsprechenden Veranstaltungen mehr durchgeführt.” The rule says that, to respect political neutrality, Audi will not hold publicly effective appointments with parties or politicians standing for election, or sponsor corresponding events, during the three months before elections.

Audi said the invitation arose during confidential negotiations and that it took the possibility of the setting being read as a political signal seriously. The company also said its neutrality principles had not been abandoned. Whether a rally appearance falls within the policy’s precise scope, and whether an exception or interpretation applies, remained unresolved in the reporting available on October 27.
Why does Audi want a U.S. factory?
Audi’s management case is economic rather than ideological: build vehicles close to a major market, reduce exposure to import tariffs and currency swings, and improve a U.S. business that is currently unprofitable.

Could the Audi plant cost German workers their jobs?
The announcement does not prove that German jobs would be transferred to Georgia. A U.S. plant could instead create capacity for vehicles intended for American buyers while allowing German sites to focus on other models. However, workers are being asked to judge the proposal against an active restructuring plan, not in isolation.

Audi works-council chairman Jörg Schlagbauer captured that tension by saying, “Man muss sich nicht anbiedern, kann aber auch den Absatzmarkt in den USA nicht ignorieren.” His broader point was that Audi should not ingratiate itself with a politician, yet cannot ignore the U.S. market; securing German locations should come first, with American growth discussed afterward, with or without a plant.

What must happen before the project becomes real?

Labor representatives must decide whether the commercial opportunity is worth the political risk and whether they can convert their board seats into concrete protections for German employees.

A board approval without German guarantees could deepen the perception that overseas growth is being prioritized while domestic sites contract. A rejection could preserve political distance but leave Audi exposed to tariffs and an unprofitable U.S. import model.
