The evidence points to growing pressure from local automakers, while it does not establish that EV migration is the sole cause or reveal Toyota’s latest worldwide sales total.
Why are Toyota sales falling in China?

The wider competitive shift is visible in China Passenger Car Association figures reported by Caixin. Domestic brands’ share of passenger vehicles rose from 41.2% in 2021 to 65.4% in 2025. Japanese brands’ share fell from 22.6% to 12.1% over the same period. These are passenger-vehicle market shares, not an EV-only breakdown, and they describe a multi-year change rather than Toyota’s sales in 2026.

Those figures support the conclusion that Japanese automakers face a substantially stronger domestic competitive position in China. They do not by themselves identify why each buyer chose a particular make, or show how much of Toyota’s decline is attributable to electric vehicles rather than other market and company factors.

Are Chinese EV brands taking buyers from Toyota?
Local automakers are important players in China’s shift toward new-energy vehicles (NEVs), but the available figures do not trace Toyota customers directly to a specific rival or powertrain. BYD, for example, reported 4.6 million NEV sales in 2025 and more than 1.8 million cumulative sales in the first half of 2026. What is Toyota doing in China?
Toyota China says it is pursuing deeper local research and development and product development, while continuing to offer multiple powertrain routes, including battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrids. The company frames this as a “with China, for China” approach intended to make products more responsive to local customers. This is Toyota’s stated strategy, not evidence that sales have recovered. What do Toyota’s global sales and EV figures show?
Toyota published its August 2026 sales-results release on September 29, 2026. The release links to a detailed spreadsheet, but the accessible release page does not display the worldwide total or its year-over-year comparison. Global battery-electric performance is a separate measure from total vehicle sales. TrendForce reported that Toyota’s global BEV sales rose 143% year over year in Q2 2026. How to read the figures without conflating them
- Geography: Toyota’s 18.2% decline is for China; TrendForce’s NEV estimate and Toyota BEV growth figure are global.
- Time period: The sources describe January–July 2026, calendar years 2021 and 2025, the first half of 2026, and Q2 2026. They are not interchangeable snapshots.
- Measure: Passenger-vehicle market share, automaker-reported sales, estimated NEV sales, and BEV sales count different things.
- Cause: The figures show a concurrent China sales decline and share shift, but do not prove that EV adoption alone caused Toyota’s decline.
