The least expensive trim can be the smartest buy when it already has the safety equipment, capability and everyday features you need—and the pricier trims add things you are unlikely to use. But “base” does not mean the same thing on every car. Compare the exact model year, trim and packages, then weigh the real price difference against what you gain and what you will pay to own it.
What the cheapest trim does—and does not—tell you
A trim is a version of a model with its own combination of equipment, powertrain and price. The base trim is generally the least expensive configuration, but its name alone does not tell you which safety systems, comfort features or capabilities it includes. Equipment and package availability can change by model year and market, so check the manufacturer’s equipment list for the exact car you are considering.

Higher trims may add more power, different wheels, leather upholstery, upgraded audio or convenience features. Those upgrades can be worthwhile if they solve a real need or make the car better for your daily use. They are poor value if you are paying for features that will rarely matter to you.
Does buying the base trim mean compromising on safety?
No. A low trim is not automatically unsafe, and a higher trim is not automatically safer. Safety depends on the particular vehicle, its standard and optional equipment, and the ratings that apply to its model year and build.

In a January 2026 article, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2026 Mazda 3, Hyundai Kona, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Subaru Forester as examples of vehicles whose base models earned the 2025 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. The article says their base models included automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning or prevention. These are examples, not a guarantee about other cars or later model years. Check current IIHS ratings for the exact model and year, and confirm that the rating applies to the build date you are shopping.
Compare crashworthiness and crash-avoidance equipment, and check headlights as well as the rating details. Vehicle size and weight can also matter when comparing cars. IIHS reported that automatic emergency braking cuts front-to-rear crash rates in half and pedestrian crash rates by a quarter; that is a reported effect across the technology, not a promised result for an individual driver.

Decide what you need before comparing trims
Start with requirements rather than the feature list on the more expensive model. Consumer Reports recommends reviewing the automaker’s trims, packages and accessories before visiting a dealership, then sorting features into necessities and preferences. Its older model and price examples date to 2018; the useful point is the method, not those past prices or equipment lists.
- Safety: Identify the crash-avoidance equipment you want, then verify whether it is standard or requires a package.
- Powertrain and capability: Compare the engine or motor, transmission, drivetrain, fuel economy and any towing or payload capacity you actually need.
- Everyday fit: Check comfort, accessibility, child-seat, weather and cargo needs. Make sure the specific trim or package includes the feature rather than assuming it does.
- Preferences: List styling, audio and convenience upgrades separately from must-haves. Decide what each is worth to you before seeing the price difference.
Compare the actual cost, not just the sticker prices
Find the price difference between the two configurations you would really buy, including packages, mandatory fees and dealer-installed options. Then compare ownership costs over the same period. A trim’s purchase-price premium is only one part of what it costs to own.

Edmunds’ True Cost to Own framework estimates depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs over five years. Its published assumptions include 15,000 miles of driving annually, a 10% down payment, a 60-month loan and above-average credit. Use it as a comparison tool, not a personal quote: your costs depend on where you live, how you drive, your insurance profile, negotiated price, financing and vehicle use. For insurance, request a quote for the specific vehicle and trim.
Resale is not a simple argument for either trim. Edmunds says highly optioned vehicles sometimes depreciate more because used-car shoppers may not value every added feature. That is a tendency, not a rule: outcomes vary by model and market. Likewise, fewer features do not establish that a car will be more reliable. Consumer Reports’ reliability predictions are survey-based and, when data is limited, may draw on a prior generation or a similar model.

Use a side-by-side comparison before choosing
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Safety | What are the current IIHS results? Are the headlights and crash-avoidance systems acceptable to you? Does the rating apply to this model year and build? |
| Powertrain and capability | Are the engine or motor, transmission, drivetrain, fuel economy and towing or payload capacity right for your needs? |
| Must-have equipment | Which trim or package actually includes the comfort, accessibility, child-seat, weather and cargo features you require? |
| Added price | What are the MSRP and negotiated prices, including packages, mandatory fees and dealer-installed options? |
| Ownership costs | How do depreciation, financing, tax and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs compare over the same period? What does an insurance quote for each vehicle show? |
| Resale and reliability | What model-specific evidence is available? Avoid assuming that every option will retain its cost or that a simpler trim guarantees reliability. |
When the higher trim is worth paying for
Move up when the more expensive version includes something you genuinely need or value enough to justify its actual price difference. That might be a safety feature not offered on the base trim, a powertrain or capability that fits your use, or a comfort feature you expect to appreciate regularly. Compare the specific equipment and costs; a trim badge by itself is not a reason to spend more.

When the least expensive trim is the smarter buy
Choose the cheaper version when it meets your safety, capability and everyday requirements and the upgrades you would be paying for are mostly unused extras. The decision is not “base versus best”; it is whether the more expensive configuration gives you enough value to justify its added price and ownership cost.
Trim equipment, prices and safety ratings can change during a model year, and costs vary with the buyer and location. Verify the manufacturer’s current equipment list, current IIHS results, dealer pricing and insurance estimates for the exact car before deciding.
