Marvell’s 88Q222xM Automotive Ethernet PHY: MACsec, 100/1000BASE-T1 and Current Ownership

Marvell announced its 88Q222xM automotive Ethernet PHY family on October 7, 2020, combining 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 support with integrated MACsec security. It is a historical product announcement, not a new launch: Marvell completed the sale of its Automotive Ethernet business to Infineon on August 14, 2025, and says the business has moved to Infineon. Marvell’s sale-completion announcement and its automotive page establish the current ownership context.

What did Marvell announce?

The 88Q222xM family was designed for point-to-point automotive Ethernet links over unshielded twisted pair. Marvell’s October 7, 2020 announcement described two dual-speed PHYs, the 88Q2220M and 88Q2221M, with support for 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 plus integrated IEEE 802.1AE MACsec. At launch, Marvell said both devices were sampling with development boards; that is launch-time status, not evidence of current availability. Marvell’s 2020 announcement is the source for those product details.

Marvell called the device the “industry’s first” automotive gigabit Ethernet PHY with integrated MACsec and made performance claims in the same announcement. Those are the company’s promotional characterizations, not independently verified rankings or power measurements.

What does an automotive Ethernet PHY do?

A PHY, or physical-layer transceiver, sends and receives Ethernet signals across a physical link. In a vehicle network, an automotive single-pair Ethernet PHY handles signaling between connected network devices; it does not by itself define or secure every system above or beyond that link. The 88Q222xM was Marvell’s transceiver for 100- or 1000-megabit-per-second automotive links using one twisted pair.

  • - 1000M or 100M - USB-C or Barrel Plug - TE MATEnet, Rosenberger H-MTD, terminal block

What is 1000BASE-T1?

1000BASE-T1 is gigabit Ethernet over a single balanced pair, rather than the four pairs used by conventional 1000BASE-T cabling. Marvell listed IEEE 802.3bp compliance for 1000BASE-T1 and IEEE 802.3bw compliance for 100BASE-T1. The two speeds let a design use the same PHY family approach for different automotive link bandwidth requirements; the appropriate speed depends on the network segment and system design.

How does MACsec protect in-vehicle Ethernet?

MACsec is IEEE 802.1AE Media Access Control Security, a Layer 2 mechanism for protecting Ethernet traffic across a link. Marvell characterized the 88Q222xM implementation as hop-by-hop protection against threats including intrusion, man-in-the-middle attacks and replay attacks. That protection applies to the link where MACsec is implemented; it should not be treated as end-to-end security for an entire vehicle or as a replacement for broader network and system security measures.

  • 🛠️Features with 100BASE-T1 Master/Slave configuration and link LED. The design makes it portable and easy to install in test racks. The galvanized sheet steel with black powder coating housing makes it robust.
  • 🚀Plug and Play, No need to install the drivers. No customized driver is needed to interact with our 100BASE-T1-TX-N Media Converter. The device communicates with standard Ethernet through an RJ-45 connector.

Marvell also listed IEEE 802.1AS and IEEE 802.1AS-Rev Precision Time Protocol support for network time synchronization. This timing capability is distinct from MACsec: one supports synchronized network timing, while the other provides link-level Ethernet security.

What do TC10 and partial networking add?

The announcement listed Open Alliance TC10 sleep/wake support. In partial networking, selected vehicle network segments can sleep while others remain active, then wake when needed. Marvell said TC10 control signals can travel over the data line, reducing the need for special remote-control cables. The release did not provide measured power savings, so no specific efficiency gain can be inferred from it.

How does 88Q222xM fit into Marvell’s later PHY announcements?

Marvell’s 2021 announcement added distinct MACsec-integrated products: the 88Q2233M dual 1000BASE-T1 PHY and the 88Q120xM 100BASE-T1 PHY. They provide portfolio chronology, but they are not variants of the 88Q222xM family. Marvell’s 2021 announcement lists these products and their features.

Who owns Marvell Automotive Ethernet now?

Infineon owns the Automotive Ethernet business Marvell sold. Marvell announced completion of the $2.5 billion all-cash transaction on August 14, 2025, and its current automotive page says the business has moved to Infineon. The transaction figure is the announced consideration for the completed sale, not a price for the 88Q222xM device.

The available launch announcement establishes that the 88Q2220M and 88Q2221M were sampling with development boards in 2020. It does not establish present-day stock, production lifecycle, or support status. Design teams evaluating the part should confirm current product and support information with the business now responsible for it rather than assume the 2020 sampling status still applies.
