BMW’s most convincing way to close the sixth-generation M3 is not another horsepower contest. It is the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter: a limited North American edition that combines a six-speed manual transmission with rear-wheel drive, then adds targeted weight reduction and chassis tuning. That combination makes the car feel like a deliberate celebration of driver involvement rather than a routine equipment package.
The “sendoff” applies to the sixth-generation M3, not to every future manual BMW M car. BMW M was still describing other current manual models in a June 5, 2026 article. The Handschalter matters because BMW chose a focused, traditional configuration for this particular M3 CS, not because it proves manuals have disappeared from the entire M range.

What BMW announced
BMW announced the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter on May 18, 2026. It is built exclusively for North America in very limited numbers, with production scheduled to begin in July 2026 and customer deliveries expected in fall 2026. BMW’s announcement gives a United States base MSRP of $107,100, before a $1,350 destination and handling charge. Those are announcement figures; an available car’s final price, dealer charges, allocation status and inventory should be confirmed with BMW or an authorized retailer.
The model uses BMW’s 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-six. BMW lists 473 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 406 lb-ft of torque from 2,630 to 6,130 rpm. Every car has a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. BMW claims 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds and a 180-mph top speed when the standard M Driver’s Package is fitted.

Why the manual and rear-wheel-drive combination is the right sendoff
A manual transmission makes the driver part of the performance
A dual-clutch or torque-converter automatic can manage shifts with extraordinary consistency, but it also manages a task that a manual driver performs personally. In the Handschalter, the driver chooses when to release the clutch, where to place the engine in its rev range and how much wheelspin to accept. Those decisions create pauses, corrections and small imperfections that become part of the experience.
That matters especially in a special-edition M3. A limited CS model is unlikely to be judged only by its launch-control number. Owners will remember the effort required to make a clean upshift, the timing of a rev-matched downshift and the way the engine responds when a corner exit is taken in the wrong gear. The gearbox gives the car a mechanical rhythm that a faster automated shift can remove.
BMW’s quoted 4.1-second 0–60-mph time is a manufacturer claim, not evidence that the manual is the quickest possible M3 configuration. The point of the Handschalter is that acceleration is only one part of the interaction. The driver has a physical role in every acceleration run, road section and track lap.
Rear-wheel drive preserves the classic M3 layout
Rear-wheel drive gives the front tires a more focused job: steering. The rear axle supplies propulsion, and the driver can influence the car’s attitude with throttle position, steering angle and gear choice. That layout is central to the traditional M3 character because it encourages balance and deliberate control rather than relying on driven front wheels to distribute traction.

Rear-wheel drive also makes the manual gearbox more meaningful. Selecting a gear is not merely an efficiency decision; it affects how the rear tires accept torque on corner exit. A careful driver can choose a higher gear for smoother traction or a lower gear for stronger engine response, then adjust the throttle to keep the chassis composed.
This is not an argument that rear-wheel drive is superior in every weather condition or for every owner. All-wheel drive can provide additional traction in rain, snow or cold conditions. BMW’s choice here is about character: the CS Handschalter is configured around interaction and balance, even though that may demand more attention from its driver.
The pairing gives the CS edition a clear identity
Many performance cars gain power, tires and carbon-fiber parts without changing how the driver uses them. The Handschalter’s transmission and driven wheels define the car before an option is selected. Lightweight parts and suspension calibration reinforce that central idea instead of trying to disguise it.
That clarity is why the manual, rear-wheel-drive specification is more significant than any single aerodynamic detail. BMW did not simply add a badge to a standard M3. It selected the configuration most likely to make the final sixth-generation CS feel distinct every time it is driven.

How the CS Handschalter differs from a standard M3
The most important comparison is not a simple horsepower count. BMW’s announcement describes a package built around a specific transmission, driven wheels, reduced mass and model-specific calibration. The weight figures also use different baselines, so they should not be combined casually.

| Comparison area | M3 CS Handschalter | What BMW’s comparison establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission | Six-speed manual only | BMW identifies the base manual M3 as the relevant weight baseline |
| Drivetrain | Rear-wheel drive only | The CS edition is intentionally centered on the classic layout |
| Engine output | 473 hp and 406 lb-ft | The announcement provides the CS figures; it does not establish every standard-M3 output configuration |
| Targeted weight reduction | About 42 pounds | Versus a base BMW M3 equipped with the six-speed manual |
| Optional brake reduction | 31.5 pounds | Additional saving from M Carbon Ceramic brakes versus standard M Compound brakes |
| Total stated reduction | Nearly 75 pounds with optional ceramic brakes | BMW’s comparison is versus a standard M3 with the optional brakes fitted |
| Chassis | Specific steering, engine, gearbox and chassis tuning; 6 mm lower | BMW describes calibration changes rather than a generic appearance package |
The table’s three weight statements describe different comparisons. “About 42 pounds” is the targeted saving against a base manual M3. “31.5 pounds” is the brake-system saving against standard M Compound brakes. “Nearly 75 pounds” is BMW’s combined comparison against a standard M3 when the optional carbon-ceramic brakes are installed. Treating all three numbers as one universal curb-weight claim would overstate what BMW published.
Where the weight savings come from
BMW says the CS uses targeted lightweight measures rather than a single dramatic deletion. The announcement identifies carbon-fiber-reinforced components, forged alloy wheels, a titanium rear silencer and standard M Carbon bucket seats. Each part affects more than the number on a scale: mass removed from the body, wheels, exhaust or seats can change how quickly the car responds to steering and throttle inputs.
- Carbon-fiber-reinforced components: selected structural or body parts reduce mass while preserving the rigidity BMW wants from the chassis.
- Forged alloy wheels: lower wheel mass can reduce the work required for the suspension to control each tire, although BMW’s announcement does not provide a separate wheel-weight test.
- Titanium rear silencer: the exhaust component contributes to the targeted reduction while retaining the six-cylinder character expected of an M3.
- M Carbon bucket seats: these are standard equipment rather than an expensive post-purchase upgrade, and they support the CS model’s track-oriented intent.
Optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes account for the separately stated 31.5-pound saving compared with standard M Compound brakes. They also change the ownership calculation: the brakes are a substantial performance option, but the announcement’s option price was not provided, and replacement costs or long-term service expenses were not established.
Chassis equipment and available options
The standard specification already includes hardware aimed at demanding driving. M Compound brakes provide the default stopping system, and Style 927M forged wheels are standard. BMW also includes the M Carbon bucket seats, which make the car’s purpose visible every time the door opens.
The model-specific chassis sits 6 millimeters lower than a standard M3. BMW says the steering, engine and gearbox receive dedicated tuning as well. Those changes matter because a manual rear-wheel-drive car depends on predictable responses: the driver needs to know how the front axle will react to steering, how the rear tires will accept torque and how the gearbox will respond to a shift request.

- M Front Strut Brace: the announcement lists an option price of $1,100.
- Ultra-track tires: the announcement lists an option price of $600.
Those option prices are tied to BMW’s announcement and can change. Confirm the current configuration sheet, destination charge, taxes and dealer-installed items before treating them as a purchase quote. Ultra-track tires may also be a poor match for an owner who drives the car mainly in cold or wet conditions; BMW’s announcement identifies the option but does not publish a seasonal-use recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What BMW’s performance numbers do—and do not—tell you
The 473-hp output is quoted at 6,250 rpm, while peak torque is available from 2,630 through 6,130 rpm. That broad stated torque band suggests the engine should offer useful response across a wide portion of the rev range, which is helpful in a manual car because the driver has fewer ratios than an automatic transmission might provide.
The claimed 4.1-second 0–60-mph time should be read with its source and conditions attached: it is BMW’s figure for the car, not an independently verified test result cited in the announcement. Launch technique, surface, temperature, tire condition and driver skill can all affect a manual-transmission result. A buyer should not assume every road start will reproduce the factory number.
The 180-mph top speed is likewise a BMW claim and specifically includes the standard M Driver’s Package. It is not a promise that every market, tire, road or vehicle condition permits that speed. Public-road laws and safe driving limits remain decisive.

Price, production and availability
BMW announced a U.S. base MSRP of $107,100, plus $1,350 for destination and handling. The announced pre-tax total is therefore $108,450 before options, registration, taxes, dealer charges or other transaction costs. The M Front Strut Brace and ultra-track tires were listed at $1,100 and $600 respectively, but option pricing is volatile.
The car is not a regular-volume M3 trim. BMW describes production as very limited and restricts the model to North America. Production was scheduled to start in July 2026, with deliveries expected in fall 2026. Neither an exact production number nor current dealer inventory was established in the announcement. A buyer should treat any claim about how many cars exist, or what a particular retailer has available, as requiring separate confirmation.
A sensible allocation and purchase checklist
- Ask BMW or an authorized retailer whether the retailer has a confirmed allocation for the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter, rather than relying on an informal waiting-list position.
- Request a written vehicle configuration showing the base MSRP, the $1,350 destination and handling charge, selected options and all dealer-added fees.
- Confirm that the car is the manual, rear-wheel-drive Handschalter edition; do not assume a standard M3 listing has the same drivetrain.
- Check the planned build and delivery timing, because BMW’s fall 2026 delivery expectation is not a guaranteed date for every customer.
- Decide whether carbon-ceramic brakes, the strut brace and ultra-track tires suit your driving. Their performance rationale is clear, but their prices and practical value depend on use.
- Verify warranty, maintenance and tire-replacement terms in the final contract. The announcement does not establish long-term ownership costs.
Is this BMW’s last manual M car?
No. BMW positioned the M3 CS Handschalter as a close to the sixth-generation M3. BMW M’s June 5, 2026 article also discussed other current M models with manual transmissions. Calling the Handschalter BMW M’s final manual model would therefore go beyond the available evidence.

Who should want the M3 CS Handschalter?
It makes sense for drivers who value involvement
- You want the act of shifting to remain central to every drive.
- You prefer rear-wheel-drive balance and are willing to manage traction yourself.
- You value a factory-developed, limited-edition specification more than maximum convenience.
- You can use or appreciate the CS hardware, including the lower chassis, bucket seats and forged wheels.
It may be the wrong fit for other priorities
- Drivers who want effortless commuting in traffic may prefer an automated transmission, but BMW’s announcement does not provide a direct real-world comfort comparison.
- Owners who regularly face snow or poor-weather traction may find the rear-wheel-drive layout less forgiving than an all-wheel-drive alternative.
- People seeking independently verified acceleration, braking or lap-time data will need to wait for testing; the published numbers are BMW claims.
- Buyers who need a predictable, high-volume purchase may struggle with a very limited North American edition and uncertain retailer availability.
Why this configuration matters beyond the numbers
The M3 has grown into a sophisticated performance sedan whose capabilities can exceed what most roads allow. A special edition can respond to that reality in two ways: add more output and electronic sophistication, or make the driver’s decisions more important. BMW chose the second path for this CS variant.
The manual gearbox slows the sequence between intention and result just enough to expose technique. Rear-wheel drive makes throttle management visible in the car’s attitude. The lighter components and lower chassis make the response sharper, while the 473-hp engine supplies enough performance that the driver must still be deliberate. None of those elements alone would make a compelling sendoff; together they create a coherent reason for the edition to exist.
That coherence also protects the car from becoming a specification-sheet special. The CS name, carbon parts and optional brakes matter because they serve the manual, rear-wheel-drive concept. If the car were only a more expensive M3 with cosmetic changes, the limited production would be harder to justify. Here, the distinctive drivetrain is the foundation, and the other upgrades support it.

The Bottom Line
The 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter is a fitting sixth-generation M3 sendoff because BMW made driver involvement the defining feature: 473 horsepower, a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive and focused weight and chassis work. Its $107,100 U.S. base MSRP, limited North American production and BMW-only performance claims demand careful verification, but the configuration itself is unusually clear and purposeful.
