Why Tesla Ended Model S and Model X Production—and What It Means for Owners

Tesla ended Model S and Model X production as it redirects Fremont factory space toward Optimus and an autonomy-focused future. Here’s what the timing and owner-support statement mean.

Tesla says it ended Model S and Model X production to redirect the Fremont factory space toward Optimus robots as the company shifts its focus toward autonomy. Production had ended earlier than mid-2026, according to a later earnings-call transcript. Tesla has said it will support existing owners, but has not publicly specified the terms in the cited announcement.

Why is Tesla discontinuing the Model S and Model X?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk presented the decision as a strategic shift toward autonomy, not simply a change to the car lineup. In a January 2026 earnings-call report, he said: “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy.”

Tesla plans to repurpose the Fremont, California, factory space used for the two cars to manufacture its Optimus humanoid robot. Musk described a long-term goal of producing one million robots a year in that space. That is a target, not a reported production rate or demonstrated factory capacity. Tesla’s June 2026 quarterly filing described preparations and investment for large-scale Optimus manufacturing and noted that new manufacturing operations carry uncertainties. Tesla’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026

When did Tesla stop making the cars?

Tesla announced the end of both programs during its January 2026 quarterly earnings call and initially expected to make final versions in the following quarter. A later transcript of the Q1 2026 earnings call reported that production had ended earlier than mid-year, so the initial next-quarter expectation should not be treated as the final shutdown date. The change marked a turn from the company’s earlier vehicle lineup. Tesla launched the Model S in 2012 and the Model X in 2015; the company’s September 2025 filing still listed their Fremont production as active at that earlier date. Tesla’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2025

Was weak demand also a reason?

TechCrunch reported that Model S and Model X sales had flatlined in recent years despite refreshes, amid increased competition in luxury electric vehicles. That is useful market context, but it is not the primary reason Tesla announced: Musk’s stated explanation was the shift toward autonomy and robotics. The cited reporting does not provide a quantified sales analysis or establish how much any commercial factors influenced the decision. TechCrunch’s January 28, 2026 report

Will Tesla still support Model S and Model X owners?

Tesla said it would support existing owners “for as long as people have the vehicles,” according to TechCrunch’s account of the earnings call. The statement does not define the duration or terms of parts supply, warranty coverage, software updates, service, or repairs. Production ending therefore does not, by itself, establish that the cars are unsupported; owners should confirm specific coverage or repair questions with Tesla.
