The redesign is more than a cosmetic update. Tesla revised the front and rear styling, cabin insulation, suspension tuning, connectivity hardware and rear-passenger technology. However, the exact equipment, range and price depend on the market, trim, wheels, options and software version.

What is the Tesla Model Y “Juniper”?
“Juniper” refers to the major 2025 refresh of the Model Y. Tesla’s own material calls it the new Model Y, so buyers searching Tesla’s website should not expect a separate Juniper model listing.
The refreshed vehicle keeps the Model Y’s basic role as a five-seat electric crossover, but it introduces a new exterior design and a more heavily revised interior experience. Tesla also made changes intended to improve ride comfort, reduce cabin noise and increase connectivity performance.

What changed on the refreshed Model Y?
1. New front and rear design
The most obvious change is the exterior. The redesigned front end has a cleaner, more horizontal appearance, while the rear receives a full-width light bar. Tesla says the rear light bar stretches approximately five feet across the vehicle.
There are also revised fascias and body details. The result looks less like the original Model Y and more closely aligned with Tesla’s newer design direction. The lighting changes are not merely a software update: the refreshed car has different physical body and lighting components.
2. Quieter cabin
Tesla added more sound insulation and acoustic glass to address one of the common criticisms of the earlier Model Y: noticeable road and wind noise at highway speeds.
Tesla claims the new Model Y reduces:

These are manufacturer claims rather than independent test results. Actual noise levels can vary with tires, wheel size, road surface and speed, but the quieter cabin is one of the more meaningful day-to-day changes over the older Model Y.
3. Revised ride and handling
Tesla revised the suspension tuning and chassis behavior for the refresh. The stated goal was a more comfortable ride without abandoning the Model Y’s relatively responsive handling.
This matters because the pre-refresh Model Y could feel firm, particularly with larger wheels and on broken pavement. Wheel choice remains important: a vehicle fitted with large wheels and low-profile tires will generally transmit more bumps than one using smaller wheels with more tire sidewall.

4. More rear-passenger technology
Equipped versions can have an 8-inch rear touchscreen mounted for rear passengers. It can provide access to rear climate controls, media, video, gaming, navigation and Bluetooth-headphone settings.
The rear screen is not necessarily identical across every refreshed Model Y. Tesla states that features can vary according to country, vehicle configuration, options and software version.
On vehicles with the rear display, front occupants can access the rear screen remote control app from the bottom bar of the front touchscreen. Tesla’s owner’s manual also lists this path for locking the display:
Controls > Display > Lock Rear Display
That option is useful when children are using the screen or when the owner wants to prevent accidental input from the back seat.
5. Faster connectivity
Tesla claims the refreshed Model Y can provide up to 50% faster cellular downloads, 30% greater cellular range and up to 300% faster Wi-Fi downloads compared with the earlier vehicle.

Those numbers should be treated as Tesla’s performance claims, not guaranteed results. Network congestion, signal strength, router quality and software can all affect what an owner experiences.

Launch timeline
- January 2025: Tesla revealed the redesigned Model Y in China and other Asia-Pacific markets.
- Later in January 2025: Tesla announced the vehicle for North America.
- March 2025: North American deliveries began.
- August 2025: Tesla introduced a refreshed Model Y Performance.
Tesla initially offered a limited Launch Series version. It included premium equipment and the Glacier Blue exterior color. That Launch Series was later replaced in the United States by regular Model Y variants, so it should not be confused with the only version of the refresh.
Launch price and range
The U.S. Launch Series started at approximately $59,990 before destination charges, taxes and other fees. That is historical launch pricing, not a current price guarantee.
Tesla later offered a less expensive Model Y Long Range AWD. Car and Driver reported a price of $50,630 including the listed destination and order fees at that time. Tesla pricing, incentives and fees can change, so anyone shopping now should use the live Tesla configurator rather than an early launch article.

At launch, the Long Range AWD was advertised with up to 327 miles of EPA-estimated range on its standard wheels. The estimate fell to approximately 303 miles with 20-inch wheels.

Those figures are estimates, not promises of real-world driving distance. Temperature, speed, tire pressure, elevation, wind, battery condition, wheel choice and cabin heating or cooling can all reduce actual range. Tesla also claimed approximately 5% more range from the same battery energy through efficiency improvements.
Model Y Performance
The refreshed Model Y Performance arrived in August 2025. Tesla’s current U.S. specifications list dual-motor all-wheel drive, a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 3.3 seconds, up to 306 miles of EPA-estimated range, 21-inch wheels and seating for five.

These are Performance specifications, not specifications for the original Launch Series. The Performance version prioritizes acceleration and handling, while larger wheels and performance hardware may involve compromises in ride comfort, tire cost and range compared with a more efficiency-focused version.
How the refresh compares with the old Model Y

The underlying ownership experience remains familiar: a central front touchscreen, software-controlled vehicle functions and Tesla’s charging ecosystem. The refresh is therefore an evolution of the Model Y rather than a completely new vehicle platform.

The original Launch Series is no longer the whole story. Tesla’s current lineup includes redesigned Model Y variants such as Model Y Standard, Model Y Premium and Model Y Performance. Tesla also lists the longer-wheelbase Model Y L, which can have seating for up to six people.
The Model Y L should not automatically be treated as the same vehicle as the five-seat Juniper refresh. Its longer body and additional seating make it a distinct configuration.
Because Tesla changes prices, equipment and availability frequently, buyers should check the current configurator for the exact vehicle being ordered. An article describing the January 2025 Launch Series cannot reliably tell you what a new Model Y includes today.

If you are buying a used early-refresh Model Y, verify the build date, equipment and vehicle identification number rather than relying on the seller’s use of the word “Juniper.” Check for the rear touchscreen, wheel size, drivetrain, software features and any included options.

Also run the VIN through Tesla’s recall search and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN recall search. A 2026 NHTSA recall covered certain 2025 Model Y vehicles built from November 17, 2024 through February 24, 2025 because they may have been missing the required federal certification label. The stated remedy is inspection and installation of the label when necessary.
That recall does not mean every refreshed Model Y is affected. The VIN check is the reliable way to determine whether a particular car requires attention. Tesla says recall repairs are provided without charge.
Bottom line for prospective buyers
The Model Y “Juniper” is a real redesign, but it is not an official model name and it is not still waiting to launch. The important upgrades are the quieter cabin, revised ride, new lighting and bodywork, optional rear touchscreen and updated connectivity. Range and pricing depend heavily on trim and wheels, while equipment varies by market and software.
