If the same vehicle will not charge at more than one known-good, compatible station, or it displays a persistent Service Charging System warning, stop troubleshooting and arrange diagnosis by an authorized dealer.
The detailed procedures below come from U.S. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid guidance for model years 2018 and 2024. Charging hardware, warning wording and menu paths can differ by year, country and minivan, so use your vehicle’s exact owner’s manual for final instructions.

First, make the situation safe
Charging involves household mains electricity and a high-voltage vehicle system. Do not continue if a plug, receptacle, cable or connector is damaged, wet or hot. Do not use a two-prong outlet, extension cord, plug adapter or modified plug with the portable charging cordset. The 2024 Pacifica handbook says the cordset has no user-serviceable parts; do not open or repair it. A worn or damaged receptacle must not be used.
- Unplug immediately if the AC plug or vehicle connector feels hot rather than merely warm.
- Keep all connectors dry and keep the cordset away from standing water.
- Have a qualified electrician check questionable grounding, voltage, frequency or outlet condition.
- Never attempt high-voltage battery or charging-system repairs yourself.
A connector or AC plug can feel warm during normal operation. “Hot” is a stop condition: unplug the portable cordset and have the wall outlet inspected before charging again.

Use this order of checks
1. Confirm the vehicle and connector state
- Move the vehicle to PARK. The 2024 Pacifica instructions require PARK before connecting a portable cordset or a public Level 2 station.
- Inspect the connector and vehicle inlet for damage, moisture or debris without inserting tools or cleaners.
- Insert the connector fully until it clicks. A partially seated J1772 connector can prevent the vehicle from starting a session.
- For a portable 120-volt cordset, verify that the AC plug is in a properly grounded outlet on a dedicated circuit.
When those conditions are met, the vehicle should begin charging automatically. If it does not, continue with the station and indicator checks instead of repeatedly forcing the connector.
2. Check the charging station and any schedule
Look at the station’s display or status lights. Confirm that the outlet or public EVSE is powered, available and not showing an internal fault. A vehicle schedule or station schedule may intentionally delay charging until a programmed time.
The 2018 Pacifica manual associates Issue Detected Check External Charging Station with a station that is switched off, internally faulted or scheduled to charge later. Canceling an unintended schedule or moving to another compatible station is the appropriate external check.
3. Read the portable cordset indicators
On the 2024 portable cordset, the lights narrow down whether the input power or the charging connection is reporting a problem. They do not, by themselves, identify a failed high-voltage component.

A red fault light can originate in the EVSE electronics or in the vehicle connection. Treat it as a reason to reset the connection and escalate if it returns, not as proof that one particular component has failed.
4. Try a second known-good, compatible station
Use another station only after the original setup has passed the safety checks. The replacement must use a connector and supply that your minivan’s manual permits. Record whether the second station starts charging, the exact warning on the vehicle and the cordset light pattern.
If the vehicle charges elsewhere, the first station, outlet, schedule or installation becomes the more plausible source. If it fails at multiple known-good compatible stations, a vehicle-side issue becomes more plausible; that is a troubleshooting inference, not a confirmed diagnosis. Persistent failures require professional service.
What common warning messages mean
“Service Charging System”
For the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid, Chrysler’s procedure is to unplug and plug in again or try a different charging station. If the message continues, contact an authorized dealer for high-voltage charging-system service. Do not keep cycling the connector or attempt to access high-voltage parts.

“Issue Detected Check External Charging Station”
This message points first to the external EVSE: it may be off, internally faulted or set to charge later. Verify station power and scheduling, then try another compatible station. If the message follows the vehicle, contact an authorized dealer.
These messages and procedures are documented for the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid. A different model year or minivan may use different text or reset steps; match the instruction to the manual for your vehicle.
Older or non-compliant J1772 equipment
The 2018 manual warns: “Older or non-compliant J1772 EVSE models may not support charging of this vehicle.” This is a model- and equipment-specific warning, not a universal explanation for every charging failure. Confirm that the station and connector comply with the requirements stated for your exact vehicle.

How to tell whether the charger or the minivan is at fault
No single light or failed attempt proves which side has failed. Use a controlled comparison and keep the observations separate:

Write down the model year, station type, connector type, time, state of charge, exact dashboard wording and each indicator color. Those details let a technician reproduce the condition without guessing.

Portable Level I charging
The 2024 Pacifica handbook specifies a grounded 120-volt outlet on a dedicated circuit for its portable cordset. The cordset is SAE J1772 compliant. Do not substitute an extension cord, two-prong receptacle or adapter to reach the vehicle.
Level II charging
The same handbook describes Level II as 240 volts and recommends a 32-amp EVSE installation on a 40-amp circuit breaker, with a maximum of 32 amps delivered to the vehicle. Those are handbook-specific values, not a blanket electrical design for every plug-in minivan. The EVSE, vehicle manual and local electrical code must agree; a qualified electrician should evaluate the installation.

A compatible SAE J1772 Level II EVSE can be a sensible faster home-charging option when the existing circuit is appropriate. It is not a remedy for a damaged outlet, defective cordset, station fault or vehicle warning. Confirm connector compatibility and electrical capacity before installation.
What to do if the battery is empty
Mopar says the Pacifica Hybrid can still be driven using its gasoline engine when the high-voltage battery is depleted. That operating capability does not make a persistent charging warning safe to ignore. Continue driving only as necessary to reach a safe location or service, and follow the exact instructions in your model-year manual.

- The vehicle fails at multiple known-good stations.
- A red fault condition returns after the connector has been removed and reinserted once.
- The connector, cordset or receptacle is damaged, wet or hot.
- You suspect a high-voltage component, insulation fault or vehicle inlet problem.
Chrysler’s 2018 manual states: “If an issue continues, contact your authorized dealer to service your high voltage charging system.” Dealer technicians should handle high-voltage diagnosis. A qualified electrician, rather than a vehicle technician, should inspect household wiring, grounding and receptacles.
Preventing another failed charging session
- Use only a grounded, correctly rated outlet and a compatible SAE J1772 EVSE specified for your vehicle.
- Keep the portable cordset, connectors and vehicle inlet dry and free from visible damage.
- Before plugging in, check that the vehicle is in PARK and that the station is ready.
- Review vehicle and station schedules when charging appears to be delayed rather than faulted.
- Watch the cordset indicators at the start of a session and stop for a hot plug or repeated fault light.
- Do not modify, open or attempt to repair the portable cordset.
- Keep a note of the exact warning and indicator pattern if a failure occurs.
Bottom line for a non-charging plug-in minivan
Begin with connection, PARK, station readiness and scheduling. Then use the portable cordset’s lights and a second known-good compatible station to separate an external equipment problem from a possible vehicle problem. Treat hot or damaged electrical equipment as an immediate stop condition. A persistent warning or failure across multiple stations needs authorized high-voltage service, not an adapter, improvised repair or a new charger purchased as a guess.
