Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the price rises after you reach the dealership, stop the transaction before signing. Put the advertisement, your written out-the-door quote, and the buyer’s order side by side; ask the dealer to explain every changed line and provide a corrected total in writing. If the total still differs or includes charges you did not accept, leave without signing.
Classify each addition as a government charge, dealer-required fee, conditional discount, financing condition, or optional product. That classification determines what the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance addresses and what practical step makes sense. Keep copies of every ad, quote, message, worksheet, and contract draft in case you report the conduct or seek state-specific help.

Do this before you sign anything
Pause the paperwork
Tell the salesperson and finance manager that you are not signing until the final buyer’s order matches the written offer you relied on. Do not sign a purchase contract, buyer’s order, financing application, or add-on menu while a disputed amount remains unexplained. A signature can make it harder to show which terms you intended to accept.

Use the advertisement, the written out-the-door (OTD) quote, and the current buyer’s order. Check the vehicle identification number or stock number, selling price, destination or delivery amounts, taxes, registration, document fees, rebates, add-ons, down payment, interest rate, term, and total amount financed. Circle every line that was absent from the earlier offer or changed in amount.

Request an itemized replacement
Ask: “Please identify each changed line, explain why it changed, and print the complete OTD total.” The revised sheet should show the vehicle price and every charge, not merely a new monthly payment. Keep the earlier quote; do not let it be replaced without a copy.
Leave if the numbers do not reconcile
The FTC’s consumer guidance says to review purchase documents against the offer sent before the visit and be ready to walk away when they differ. You are not required to continue negotiating to preserve your rights. Take your documents and leave if the dealer will not provide a clear written explanation or will not honor the written offer.
Identify what kind of charge appeared
Ask the dealer to put each disputed amount into one of these categories. A label such as “required” is not an explanation by itself.
| Charge or condition | Questions to ask | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Government charge paid directly by the consumer | Which government agency requires it, and is it paid directly to that agency? | Verify the amount and destination. Keep it separate from dealer-imposed fees when comparing advertised prices. |
| Dealer-required fee, such as a document fee | Is every buyer required to pay it? Was it included in the advertised price? | Request that it be included in the advertised price and OTD quote. If it appears only at signing, ask for a corrected offer or leave. |
| Eligibility-dependent rebate or discount | Who qualifies? Does it require a specific financing source, trade-in, military status, membership, or other condition? | Have the dealer show the condition in writing and calculate the price you actually qualify for. A conditional discount should not be presented as generally available. |
| Financing condition | Does the advertised price require dealer financing, a particular term, or a minimum down payment? | Request the cash price and financing terms separately. Compare the total cost, not only the monthly payment. |
| Optional product or add-on | Did you expressly agree to buy it, and is it separately priced? | Decline it if you do not want it. The FTC staff guidance says an optional add-on may not be misrepresented as required or charged without your agreement. |
What the current FTC pricing guidance says
In September 2026, FTC staff published automobile pricing-transparency FAQs interpreting the FTC Act’s prohibition on unfair or deceptive acts or practices. The guidance says an advertised vehicle price should be the amount any consumer could pay to buy the vehicle, with an exception for charges the government requires the consumer to pay directly. Under that approach, a dealer-required document fee generally belongs in the advertised price rather than appearing only after you arrive.

The FAQs address advertisements on dealer websites, social media, print, signs, phone calls, and text messages. They also discuss rebates, negotiations, optional add-ons, and vehicles that are unavailable or in transit. A lower price that only some shoppers can obtain because of an undisclosed eligibility condition can create a misleading overall impression.
The FAQs are staff views, not binding rules issued by the FTC or a court. The FTC evaluates an advertisement’s overall impression on its particular facts. State law may impose additional document-fee disclosures, caps, or required wording. Therefore, an unexplained increase is best described as a potential deceptive-pricing issue, not proof by itself that a dealer violated federal law.
When the advertised vehicle is not available
If staff say the car was sold, ask when it sold and whether the exact vehicle is still on the property, in transit, or at another location. FTC staff guidance says an advertisement for a vehicle not physically on the lot should make that fact clear. A vehicle that is no longer available should not be used simply to draw shoppers toward higher-priced vehicles.
Prepare before driving to the lot
- Confirm the exact vehicle. Send the stock number or vehicle identification number and ask the dealer to confirm in writing that it is available for sale. “A similar model” is not the same vehicle.
- Get the OTD price in writing. Request selling price, every dealer fee, taxes, registration, rebates, add-ons, and the final amount due. Ask whether the quote assumes financing, a trade-in, a down payment, or eligibility for a rebate.
- Clarify conditions. Ask which discounts require a particular lender, term, trade-in, residency, military status, membership, or other qualification. Have the dealer show both the conditional and unconditional figures when applicable.
- Arrange independent financing if useful. A bank or credit-union preapproval gives you a comparison point before you enter the dealership’s finance office. It does not require you to use that lender, but it helps separate the vehicle price from financing terms.
- Preserve the evidence. Save a PDF or screenshot of the ad, including the date, stock number, disclaimers, and displayed price. Keep emails, texts, chat transcripts, and the written quote in one folder.

- “This is the written OTD quote I received. Please show me where each difference appears on the buyer’s order.”
- “Is this amount a government charge, a dealer-required fee, a conditional discount adjustment, financing condition, or optional product?”
- “If it is mandatory, why was it not included in the advertised or quoted OTD price?”
- “Please print the revised itemized total. I will decide after I review it.”
Do not debate a monthly payment while the cash price and fees remain unsettled. Ask for the selling price and total amount financed separately. If a manager offers to remove one fee but adds another, request a fresh complete OTD sheet and compare the total, not isolated lines.
If the dealer says the quote was a mistake
Ask the dealer to honor the written quote or explain the correction in writing. Keep the original communication. You may choose to negotiate, but you are also free to decline and leave. The FTC consumer guidance specifically recommends walking away when a dealer will not honor a written offer.
If an add-on is presented as mandatory
Ask whether the vehicle can be sold without the product and request its price on a separate line. Examples include protection packages, service contracts, accessories, or other products you did not request. Do not sign an add-on agreement merely because it appears on a preprinted form.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Report suspected deceptive conduct
You can report suspected deceptive advertising or sales conduct to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the dealership’s name, location, dates, the advertised and final prices, and a concise description of what changed. The FTC says you can identify copies of advertisements or contracts in your report; retain the originals yourself.
A state attorney general or state consumer-protection office may also have authority over dealer fees and advertising. The correct agency, filing deadline, and available remedy depend on the state where the transaction occurred and sometimes where the dealer is located. Provide the same evidence package and ask what state-specific process applies.

Act promptly, but do not assume there is a nationwide cooling-off period for a vehicle purchase. The cited FTC consumer guidance does not establish a universal right to cancel a completed purchase or force a dealer to sell at an advertised price. Review every signed document, including the buyer’s order, retail installment contract, add-on forms, arbitration clause, and delivery paperwork. Compare those terms with the advertisement and written quote, then seek location-specific help from a consumer attorney, legal-aid office, or state consumer agency.

Continue preserving evidence: the original listing, messages, quote, worksheets, signed contracts, payment records, and notes of post-sale conversations. Do not rely on a verbal promise that a fee will be removed later; request any correction in writing.
Why careful comparison matters
An FTC enforcement release issued in December 2024 alleged that, in a sample of Lindsay Automotive Group transactions from 2020 through 2023, 88% of consumers paid more than the advertised price, averaging more than $2,000 extra. That figure describes the transactions in the FTC’s complaint; it is not a national estimate of all dealerships.
When announcing the September 2026 FAQs, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige said: “The FTC Act requires truthful and accurate pricing, which brings significant benefits for consumers and competition,” The statement reflects the policy goal, while the staff FAQs and any state laws still require fact-specific application.
A practical decision path
| Your situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| You have not signed, and the OTD total is higher | Pause, classify every charge, request a written correction, and leave if it remains unresolved. |
| The increase is an optional product | Decline it and obtain a buyer’s order without the product. Do not sign until it is removed. |
| The lower price depends on a qualification you do not meet | Ask for the price you actually qualify for and the condition in writing; compare the total with other offers. |
| The advertised vehicle is unavailable | Ask whether it is sold, in transit, or elsewhere and whether the ad disclosed that status. Do not switch vehicles under pressure. |
| You signed or took delivery | Review the documents immediately, preserve evidence, and obtain state-specific advice rather than assuming cancellation is available. |
The safest rule is simple: do not sign until the written buyer’s order shows the complete price and terms you intend to accept. A dealership can change its proposal, but you can decline it, keep the evidence, and report conduct that appears deceptive.
